Abstract:Flexible acoustic wave devices based on piezoelectric thin films deposited onto flexible substrates are designed as integrated multifunctional platform, which can realize multi‐functions of sensing, communication, ranging, and positioning. Unlike the commonly reported systems that require two or more sensing/ communication modules, the proposed system is composed of multiple identical flexible acoustic devices, which serve as sensing element, transmitter, and receiver to achieve the multifunctionality. Flexible and wearable sensors are highly desired for health monitoring, agriculture, sport, and indoor positioning systems applications. However, the currently developed wireless wearable sensors, which are communicated through radio signals, can only provide limited positioning accuracy and are often ineffective in underwater conditions. In this paper, a wireless platform based on flexible piezoelectric acoustics is developed with multiple functions of sensing, communication, and positioning. Under a high frequency (≈13 MHz) stimulation, Lamb waves are generated for respiratory monitoring. Whereas under low‐frequency stimulation (≈20 kHz), this device is agitated as a vibrating membrane, which can be implemented for communication and positioning applications. Indoor communication is demonstrated within 2.8 m at 200 bps or 4.2 m at 25 bps. In combination with the sensing function, real‐time respiratory monitoring and wireless communication are achieved simultaneously. The distance measurement is achieved based on the phase differences of transmitted and received acoustic signals within a range of 100 cm, with a maximum error of 3 cm. This study offers new insights into the communication and positioning applications using flexible acoustic wave devices, which are promising for wireless and wearable sensor networks.

Abstract:Flexible electronics and microsystems are an emerging technology with a tremedous impact to the future electronics and information technology and widespread applications. Various devices and microsystems have been developed. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are a type of essential device for electronics, microsensors and microsystems; however there is no activity on the development of flexible SAW devices yet. This paper reports the development of flexible SAW devices on cheap, bendable and disposable plastic films. Flexible SAW devices with resonant frequency of 198.1 MHz and 447 MHz for the Rayleigh and Lamb waves respectively have been obtained with a large transmission signal up to 18dB. The flexible SAW devices have also demonstrated their ability for acoustic streaming with a velocity up to 3.4 cm/s and for particle concentration. The results have clearly demonstrated that the flexible SAW devices have great potential for applications in electronics and microsystems.

Abstract:In recent decades, countless efforts have been put into the research and development of short-range wireless communication, which offers a convenient way for numerous applications (e.g., mobile payments, mobile advertisement). Regarding the design of acoustic communication, throughput and inaudibility are the most vital aspects, which greatly affect available applications that can be supported and their user experience. Existing studies on acoustic communication either use audible frequency band (e.g., <20kHz) to achieve a relatively high throughput or realize inaudibility using near-ultrasonic frequency band (e.g., 18-20kHz) which however can only achieve limited throughput. Leveraging the non-linearity of microphones, voice commands can be demodulated from the ultrasound signals, and further recognized by the speech recognition systems. In this poster, we design an acoustic communication system, which achieves high-throughput and inaudibility at the same time, and the highest throughput we achieve is over 17x higher than the state-of-the-art acoustic communication systems.

Abstract:Flexible and wearable acoustic wave technology has recently attracted tremendous attention due to their wide-range applications in wearable electronics, sensing, acoustofluidics, and lab-on-a-chip, attributed to its advantages such as low power consumption, small size, easy fabrication, and passive/wireless capabilities. Great effort has recently been made in technology development, fabrication, and characterization of rationally designed structures for next-generation acoustic wave based flexible electronics. Herein, advances in fundamental principles, design, fabrication, and applications of flexible and wearable acoustic wave devices are reviewed. Challenges in material selections (including both flexible substrate and piezoelectric film) and structural designs for high-performance flexible and wearable acoustic wave devices are discussed. Recent advances in fabrication strategies, wave mode theory, working mechanisms, bending behavior, and performance/evaluation are reviewed. Key applications in wearable and flexible sensors and acoustofluidics, as well as lab-on-a-chip systems, are discussed. Finally, major challenges and future perspectives in this field are highlighted.

Abstract:Flexible electronics have inspired many novel and very important applications in recent years and various flexible electronic devices such as diodes, transistors, circuits, sensors, and radiofrequency (RF) passive devices including antennas and inductors have been reported. However, the lack of a high-performance RF resonator is one of the key bottlenecks to implement flexible wireless electronics. In this study, for the first time, a novel ultra-flexible structured film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) is proposed. The flexible FBAR is fabricated on a flexible polyimide substrate using piezoelectric thin film aluminum nitride (AlN) for acoustic wave excitation. Both the shear wave and longitudinal wave can be excited under the surface interdigital electrodes configuration we proposed. In the case of the thickness extension mode, a flexible resonator with a working frequency as high as of 5.2325 GHz has been realized. The resonators stay fully functional under bending status and after repeated bending and re-flattening operations. This flexible high-frequency resonator will serve as a key building block for the future flexible wireless electronics, greatly expanding the application scope of flexible electronics.

Abstract:A flexible fiber acoustic transducer is created by designing a parallel configuration of a Rubidium iron boron (NdFeB) magnet fiber and an aluminum fiber. The former provides a stable magnet field, while the latter vibrates to phonate upon applying alternating current or generates alternating voltage in the sound field. This single device exhibits dual functions as a loudspeaker or a microphone. As a fiber loudspeaker, it can generate 40-60 dB of audible (20 Hz-20 kHz) and directional sounds which can be used for blind navigation and controllable sound field distribution. The fiber acoustic transducer functions as a microphone when external sound waves force the aluminum fiber to vibrate. After the fiber microphones are woven into several different positions of a piece of clothing, the sound source can be accurately located based on the time differences reaching different microphones. This wearable fiber acoustic transducer is promising to be used to quickly search people in trouble during emergency rescue activities such as earthquakes or fires.

Abstract:Conventional methods of intestinal inspection play an essential role in the assessment of bowel diseases and other relevant health issues, yet fail to obtain intestinal conditions in real time because of radiation limits and operation inconvenience. Herein, a flexible, skin-mounted device is developed for long-term, real-time monitoring, and for the evaluation of bowel sounds based on the integration of a three-dimensional printed elastomeric resonator with flexible electronics. The device is capable of being flexibly attached to abdominal surfaces without performance degradation during breathing. Clinical tests conduct in a normal volunteer and in patients with mechanical intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus illustrate the usefulness of the device in capturing the characteristics of bowel sounds. Furthermore, a demonstration of collection and classification of bowel sounds by the flexible device based on machine learning methods can serve as a reference for possible applications of the system in the auxiliary diagnosis of bowel problems.

Abstract:Acoustic communication has become a research focus without requiring extra hardware on the receiver side and facilitates numerous near-field applications such as mobile payment, data sharing. To communicate, existing researches either use audible frequency band or inaudible one. The former gains a high throughput but endures being audible, which can be annoying to users. The latter, although inaudible, falls short in throughput due to the limited available (near) ultrasonic bandwidth (18-22 kHz). In this paper, we achieve both high speed and inaudibility for acoustic communication by modulating the coded acoustic signal (0-20 kHz) on ultrasonic carrier. By utilizing the nonlinearity effect on microphone, the modulated audible acoustic signal can be demodulated and then decoded. We design and implement UltraComm, an inaudible acoustic communication system with OFDM scheme based on the characteristics of the nonlinear speaker-to-microphone channel. We evaluate UltraComm on different mobile devices and achieve throughput as high as 16.24 kbps, meanwhile, keep inaudibility.
A Current-Switching Communication Technique for Miniaturized Medical Implants

Abstract:Miniaturization of the medical implants is a key requirement for minimally-invasive surgery, while battery and antenna are the main bottlenecks. Wireless power transfer (WPT) is required to minimize or eliminate the battery, but the conventional inductive or capacitive WPT needs to implant a large inductor or capacitor to realize a relatively high efficiency. Based on the WPT, backscattering communication is widely used in medical implants due to its low power and low hardware cost. In conventional backscattering, the inductive or capacitive antenna of the implant should be large to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this work, we propose a new current-switching technique for the communication of medical implants. To avoid the use of antennas, the body tissue is utilized as the power-transfer medium, where a current loop is formed between the implanted and the external electrode pairs. The data of the medical implant controls its input impedance, and then switches the current loop, resulting in a data-modulated current in the external device. In this way, the external device can sense the data, achieving a high communication SNR without implanted antenna. A prototype is implemented to validate the proposed technique, where the implanted electrodes are as small as 200µ×200µm. Operating at 406 MHz of the standard medical band, the measurement shows that the signal-to-blocker ratio (SBR) achieves -35.7 dB, resulting in a high communication SNR of 21.9 dB at a data rate of 10 Mbps.

Abstract:Implantable medical devices are increasingly being used to perform electrophysiological stimulation, thus calling for wireless implantable neural stimulators for which wireless power transfer is needed. Compared with radio frequency and inductive coupling wireless power transfer methods, acoustic wireless power transfer features lower attenuation, a smaller size and a higher safe power threshold. This paper demonstrates the design, fabrication, assembly and characterization of a mm-sized acoustic wireless implantable neural stimulator based on a piezoelectric micromachined ultrasound transducer. Ex vivo experiments in water are conducted to characterize the power transfer link, showing improvement of the power transfer efficiency by more than two times with a matching circuit. Following FDA guidelines, the wireless implantable neural stimulator achieves a 3.24 μW output power in tissue. The feasibility for rat sciatic nerve stimulation is successfully demonstrated in vivo by the implantable prototype with a size of 5 × 5.5 × 2.5 mm 3 . The proposed solution has the potential to shrink the entire implanted system to a monolithic transducer-IC chip, paving the way toward an acoustic wireless implantable neural stimulator with higher levels of biocompatibility, integration and miniaturization.

Abstract:Wireless power transfer can significantly extend the application range and service life of implantable medical devices, such as pacemakers, neurostimulators, and vascular applicators. However, existing transmission schemes are faced with shortcomings such as weak power, discontinuity, or impact on human health. Here, we design a subcutaneously implantable flexible ultrasound energy harvesting system that integrates a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) transducer and a power management circuit into a single flexible printed circuit board. We maximize the TENG transducer performance by choosing an attached-electrode TENG with optimized structural parameters, which offers 66% higher output power and lower impedance than the existing work. Such a flexible system shows broad applications in various environments. It can successfully provide a stable direct current voltage of 1.8 V with >1 mW continuous DC output power and >10 mW instantaneous power, which is sufficient to continuously drive various sensor systems, operate micromotors, and apply nerve stimulation.

Abstract:Wearable devices have provided noninvasive and continuous monitoring of physiological parameters in healthcare applications. However, for the comfortable applications of wearable devices on human body, two key requirements are to replace conventional bulky devices into soft and deformable ones and to have wireless wearable communication. In this paper we present a simple, low-cost and highly efficient all-elastomeric conductor that can be used in a soft radio-frequency (RF) transmission line and antenna. We show a stretchable transmission line and two stretchable antennas fabricated with conventional screen printing. The stretchable conductor used in this fabrication method, which is a mixture of Ag and Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), can be stretched at high strains while maintaining a high conductivity, low attenuation and feasible radiation performance. The measured conductivity of the stretchable conductor reaches 1000 S/cm. Additionally, the highly conductive printed Ag-PDMS is utilized to construct transmission lines and antennas. The performance of these stretchable components, especially under different conditions of bending, stretching and twisting, are experimentally examined in common wireless-communication frequency bands. Our results demonstrate that printed Ag-PDMS enabled RF passive components have the desired property and quality for wireless wearable communication applications, which would provide new opportunities for wearable healthcare electronics.

Abstract:Abstract Flexible human–machine interfaces show broad prospects for next-generation flexible or wearable electronics compared with their currently available bulky and rigid counterparts. However, compared to their rigid counterparts, most reported flexible devices (e.g., flexible loudspeakers and microphones) show inferior performance, mainly due to the nature of their flexibility. Therefore, it is of great significance to improve their performance by developing and optimizing new materials, structures and design methodologies. In this paper, a flexible acoustic platform based on a zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film on an aluminum foil substrate is developed and optimized; this platform can be applied as a loudspeaker, a microphone, or an ambient sensor depending on the selection of its excitation frequencies. When used as a speaker, the proposed structure shows a high sound pressure level (SPL) of ~90 dB (with a standard deviation of ~3.6 dB), a low total harmonic distortion of ~1.41%, and a uniform directivity (with a standard deviation of ~4 dB). Its normalized SPL is higher than those of similar devices reported in the recent literature. When used as a microphone, the proposed device shows a precision of 98% for speech recognition, and the measured audio signals show a strong similarity to the original audio signals, demonstrating its equivalent performance compared to a rigid commercial microphone. As a flexible sensor, this device shows a high temperature coefficient of frequency of −289 ppm/K and good performance for respiratory monitoring.

Abstract:Abstract Post-surgical treatments of the human throat often require continuous monitoring of diverse vital and muscle activities. However, wireless, continuous monitoring and analysis of these activities directly from the throat skin have not been developed. Here, we report the design and validation of a fully integrated standalone stretchable device platform that provides wireless measurements and machine learning-based analysis of diverse vibrations and muscle electrical activities from the throat. We demonstrate that the modified composite hydrogel with low contact impedance and reduced adhesion provides high-quality long-term monitoring of local muscle electrical signals. We show that the integrated triaxial broad-band accelerometer also measures large body movements and subtle physiological activities/vibrations. We find that the combined data processed by a 2D-like sequential feature extractor with fully connected neurons facilitates the classification of various motion/speech features at a high accuracy of over 90%, which adapts to the data with noise from motion artifacts or the data from new human subjects. The resulting standalone stretchable device with wireless monitoring and machine learning-based processing capabilities paves the way to design and apply wearable skin-interfaced systems for the remote monitoring and treatment evaluation of various diseases.

Abstract:Ultrasound energy transfer (UET) is developed and integrated into various bioelectronics with diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring capabilities. However, existing UET platforms generally enable one function at a time due to the single ultrasound channel architecture, limiting the full potential of bioelectronics that requires multicontrol modes. Here, a multichannel piezo-ultrasound implant (MC-PUI) is presented that integrates a hybrid waterborne acoustic metastructure (HWAM), multiple piezo-harvesters, and a miniaturized circuit with electronic components for selective wireless control via ultrasound frequency switching. The HWAM that utilizes both a 3D-printed air-diffraction matrix and a half-lambda Fabry–Perot resonator is optimized to provide the advantage of ultrasound selectivity at megahertz frequencies. Complying with U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations, frequency-controlled multifunctional operations, such as wireless charging (≈11.08 µW) at 3.3 MHz and high-sensitivity wireless switch/control (threshold ≈0.55 MPa) of micro-light-emitting diode/motor at 1 MHz, are demonstrated ex vivo using porcine tissue and in vivo in a rat. The developed MC-PUI enhances UET versatility and opens up a new pathway for wireless implant design.

Abstract:Acoustic devices are widely applied in telephone communication, human-computer voice interaction system, medical ultrasound examinations, and others. However, traditional acoustic devices are hard to integrate into a flexible system, and therefore it is necessary to fabricate lightweight and flexible acoustic devices for the audible sound generation and detection. Recent advances in acoustic devices have greatly overcome the limitations of conventional acoustic sensors, in terms of sensitivity, tunability, photostability, and in vivo applicability, by employing nanomaterials. In this review, lightweight, flexible, nanomaterial-enabled acoustic devices including sound generators and sound detectors are covered. Additionally, the fundamental concepts of acoustic as well as the working principle of the nanomaterial-enabled acoustic device are introduced in details. Also, the structure of future acoustic devices, such as flexible earphone and microphone are forecasted. Further exploration of flexible acoustic devices is a key priority and will bring up a great impact on the advancement of intelligent robot-human interaction and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, stretchable electronics combined with wireless technology have been crucial for realizing efficient human-machine interaction. Here, we demonstrate highly stretchable transparent wireless electronics composed of Ag nanofibers coils and functional electronic components for power transfer and information communication. Inspired by natural systems, various patterned Ag nanofibers electrodes with a net structure are fabricated via using lithography and wet etching. The device design is optimized by analyzing the quality factor and radio frequency properties of the coil, considering the effects of strain. Particularly, the wireless transmission efficiency of a five-turn coil drops by approximately only 50% at 10 MHz with the strain of 100%. Moreover, various complex functional wireless electronics are developed using near-field communication and frequency modulation technology for applications in content recognition and long-distance transmission (>1 m), respectively. In summary, the proposed device has considerable potential for applications in artificial electronic skins, human healthcare monitoring and soft robotics.

Abstract:Sound plays a crucial role in our perception of the world. It allows us to communicate, learn, detect potential dangers, diagnose diseases, and much more. However, traditional acoustic sensors are limited in their form factors, being rigid and cumbersome, which restricts their potential applications. Recently, acoustic sensors have made significant advancements, transitioning from rudimentary forms to wearable devices and smart everyday clothing that can conform to soft, curved, and deformable surfaces or surroundings. In this review, we comprehensively explore the latest scientific and technological breakthroughs with insightful analysis in materials, physics, design principles, fabrication strategies, functions, and applications of flexible and wearable acoustic sensing technology. We highlight the new generation of acoustic sensors that can recognize voice, interact with machines, control robots, enable marine positioning and localization, monitor structural health, diagnose human vital signs in deep tissues, and perform organ imaging. These innovations offer unique solutions to significant challenges in fields such as healthcare, biomedicine, wearables, robotics, and metaverse. Finally, we address the existing challenges and future opportunities in the field, providing strategies to advance acoustic sensing technologies for intriguing real‐world applications and inspire new research directions. Abstract:Flexible electronic devices are developing rapidly, especially in the medical field. This paper reports a flexible piezoelectric micro-machined ultrasonic transducer (FPMUT) array. In the designing process, we utilize the flexible interconnection as the electrical connecting wire between piezoelectric ceramics array. Meanwhile, the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films act as flexible substrates for the whole device. It has flexibility and good conformal contacting with skin surfaces. This sandwich-structure of the FPMUT has a combination of rigid and flexible features. It also has great potential for the application in ultrasound medicine in the future and could bring them closer to commercial production.
