Abstract:Most two-dimensional (2D) materials experimentally studied so far have hexagons as their building blocks. Only a few exceptions, such as PdSe 2 , are lower in energy in pentagonal phases and exhibit pentagons as building blocks. Although theory has predicted a large number of pentagonal 2D materials, many of these are metastable and their experimental realization is difficult. Here we report the successful synthesis of a metastable pentagonal 2D material, monolayer pentagonal PdTe 2 , by symmetry-driven epitaxy. Scanning tunnelling microscopy and complementary spectroscopy measurements are used to characterize this material, which demonstrates well-ordered low-symmetry atomic arrangements and is stabilized by lattice matching with the underlying Pd(100) substrate. Theoretical calculations, along with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, reveal monolayer pentagonal PdTe 2 to be a semiconductor with an indirect bandgap of 1.05 eV. Our work opens an avenue for the synthesis of pentagon-based 2D materials and gives opportunities to explore their applications such as multifunctional nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Edges and surfaces play indispensable roles in affecting the chemical-physical properties of materials, particularly in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with reduced dimensionality. Herein, we report a novel edge/surface structure in multilayer 1T-TiSe2, i.e., the orthogonal (1 × 1) reconstruction, induced by the self-intercalation of Ti atoms into interlayer octahedral sites of the host TiSe2 at elevated temperature. Formation dynamics of the reconstructed edge/surface are captured at the atomic level by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and further validated by density functional theory (DFT), which enables the proposal of the nucleation mechanism and two growth routes (zigzag and armchair). Via STEM-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), a chemical shift of 0.6 eV in Ti L3,2 is observed in the reconstructed edge/surface, which is attributed to the change of the coordination number and lattice distortion. The present work provides insights to tailor the atomic/electronic structures and properties of 2D TMDC materials.
Single-layer Mo5Te8 ― A New Polymorph of Layered Transition-Metal Chalcogenide

Abstract:Single-layer (SL) transition-metal chalcogenides (TMCs) represent an important family of two-dimensional (2D) materials that have attracted intensive research attention recently. It has been established that many TMCs are polymorphic that can exist in different crystal structures and correspondingly exhibit diverse physical properties. Discovery of new structural phases of a crystal is of great scientific and practical importance. In this work, we report a new polymorph of SL-TMC, i.e. SL-Mo5Te8, attained by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). Like the 1H-MoTe2, it possesses the hexagonal symmetry but a much larger unit cell with a basis containing as many as 39 atoms (15 Mo and 24 Te). We call it the variational hexagonal (v1H) phase. Coincidently, it may be viewed also as one containing the highest density possible of mirror-twin domain boundaries (MTBs) in an otherwise pristine 1H-MoTe2. Electronically, it is metallic and a comparison between theory and experiments of its density-of-states (DOS) at the Fermi level reveals features pointing to an importance of electron interactions that invites further investigations.
Reconstructions and Stabilities of PbTe(1 1 1) Crystal Surface from Experiments and Density-Functional Theory

Abstract:Surface properties of epitaxially grown PbTe(1 1 1) thin films on BaF2(1 1 1) substrates were systematically investigated by the characterizations of in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and atomic force microscope (AFM). First principal calculations were performed to facilitate the interpretation of experimental observations. Our results indicate that substrate temperature (T-sub) and chemical environment are crucial in determining the type of surface structure during the growth of PbTe(1 1 1) thin films. When PbTe is grown at T-sub = 250 degrees C, the metastable (1 x 1) structure is formed on the PbTe( 1 1 1) surface. However, whether T-sub is elevated to 300 degrees C or the PbTe( 1 1 1)-(1 x 1) sample grown at T-sub = 250 degrees C is post-annealed at 300 degrees C, the stable (2 x 1) reconstructions appear on the PbTe(1 1 1) surface. In Pb-rich environment, the most stable (2 1) reconstruction results from the substitution of the half of the 2nd Te atoms by Pb atoms, while in Te-rich environment, the most stable (2 x 1) reconstruction originates from the missing of half of the 1st Pb atoms. Epitaxial Growth of Monolayer PdTe2 and Patterned PtTe2 by Direct Tellurization of Pd and Pt surfaces

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) palladium ditelluride (PdTe2) and platinum ditelluride (PtTe2) are two Dirac semimetals which demonstrate fascinating quantum properties such as superconductivity, magnetism and topological order, illustrating promising applications in future nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. However, the synthesis of their monolayers is dramatically hindered by strong interlayer coupling and orbital hybridization. In this study, an efficient synthesis method for monolayer PdTe2 and PtTe2 is demonstrated. Taking advantages of the surface reaction, epitaxial growth of large-area and high quality monolayers of PdTe2 and patterned PtTe2 is achieved by direct tellurization of Pd(111) and Pt(111). A well-ordered PtTe2 pattern with Kagome lattice formed by Te vacancy arrays is successfully grown. Moreover, multilayer PtTe2 can be also obtained and potential excitation of Dirac plasmons is observed. The simple and reliable growth procedure of monolayer PdTe2 and patterned PtTe2 gives unprecedented opportunities for investigating new quantum phenomena and facilitating practical applications in optoelectronics.
Two-Dimensional Electron Gas at the Metastable Twisted Interfaces of Cdte/Pbte (111) Single Heterojunctions

Abstract:The lattice-structure-mismatched CdTe/PbTe heterostructures are emerging materials with unique properties and promising applications in midinfrared optoelectronics and spintronics. High-density two-dimensional electron gas at the metastable twisted interfaces of CdTe/PbTe (111) is investigated experimentally and theoretically. CdTe thin films grown on PbTe(111) using molecular-beam epitaxy are found to have high electron mobilities and carrier concentrations from Hall-effect measurements: 2.02 x 10(4) cm(2)/Vs and 4.5 x 10(18) cm(-3) at 2 K, and 6.70 x 10(3) cm(2)/Vs and 6.0 x 10(19) cm(-3) at 77 K. Our density-functional theory modeling reveals that the epitaxially grown CdTe/PbTe (111) heterostructures form metastable twisted interfaces that exhibit unusual structural and electronic properties: (1) The PbTe epilayer on CdTe(111) substrates is structurally highly distorted from the rocksalt structure within the first similar to 4.5 nm from the interface, which is caused by the stereochemical activity of the Pb s(2) lone pair. (2) The CdTe eplilayer on the PbTe(111) forms spontaneously a high density two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) over 10(13) cm(-2) near the interface, without the need for doping, which explains the experimentally observed high carrier density and mobility. It is a much simpler heterostructure yet able to offer high electron mobility comparable to and one or two order magnitude higher sheet carrier density than the best achieved values for those of Si and II-VI based quantum well structures relying on modulation doping.
PtP$_2$: An Example of Exploring the Hidden Cairo Tessellation in the Pyrite Structure for Discovering Novel Two-Dimensional Materials

Abstract:The Cairo tessellation refers to a pattern of type 2 pentagons that can pave an infinite plane without creating a gap or overlap. We reveal the hidden, layered Cairo tessellations in the pyrite structure with a general chemical formula of $AB_2$ and space group $pa\bar3$. We use this hidden tessellation along with density functional theory calculations to examine the possibility of obtaining a two-dimensional (2D) material with the Cairo tessellation from the bulk, using PtP$_2$ as an example. Unlike previously reported single-layer materials such as PdSe$_2$ with a buckled, pentagonal structure-strictly speaking, not belonging to the Cairo tessellation, we find that single-layer PtP$_2$ is completely planar exhibiting dynamically stable phonon modes. We also observe a reduction in the bandgaps PtP$_2$ from bulk to single layer using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid density functional, and the bandgap type switches from indirect to direct. By contrast, using the standard Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional leads to the conclusion of single-layer PtP$_2$ being metallic. We further study the bonding characteristics of this novel single-layer material by computing the Bader charge transfer, the electron localization function, and the crystal orbit overlap population, which show mixed P-P covalent bonding and Pt-P ionic bonding, with the former being stronger. Finally, we study the surface states of single-layer PtP$_2$ and consider the spin-orbit coupling. We observe no spin-helical Dirac cone states, therefore ruling out single-layer PtP$_2$ as a topological insulator. We expect the example demonstrated in this work will stimulate interest in computationally identifying novel 2D materials from a variety of bulk materials with the pyrite structure.

Abstract:Abstract The properties and performance of two-dimensional (2D) materials can be greatly affected by point defects. PtTe 2 , a 2D material that belongs to the group 10 transition metal dichalcogenides, is a type-II Dirac semimetal, which has gained a lot of attention recently due to its potential for applications in catalysis, photonics, and spintronics. Here, we provide an experimental and theoretical investigation of point defects on and near the surface of PtTe 2 . Using scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements, in combination with first-principle calculations, we identify and characterize five common surface and subsurface point defects. The influence of these defects on the electronic structure of PtTe 2 is explored in detail through grid STS measurements and complementary density functional theory calculations. We believe these findings will be of significance to future efforts to engineer point defects in PtTe 2 , which is an interesting and enticing approach to tune the charge-carrier mobility and electron–hole recombination rates, as well as the site reactivity for catalysis.

Penta-Pt2N4: an Ideal Two-Dimensional Material for Nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional (2D) materials have paved a new routine for designing high-performance nanoelectronic devices. To facilitate the device applications, there are three key requirements for a material: sizeable band gap, high carrier mobility and robust environmental stability. However, for the hottest 2D materials studied in recent years, graphene is gapless, transition metal dichalcogenides have low carrier mobility, and black phosphorene is environmentally sensitive. So far, these three characteristics can seldom be satisfied in one single material. Therefore, it becomes a great challenge for finding an ideal 2D material to overcome such a limitation. In this work, we theoretically predict a novel planar 2D material: Penta-Pt2N4, which are designed by the fantastic Cario pentagonal tiling as well as the rare nitrogen double bond. Most significantly, the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 exhibits excellent intrinsic properties, including large direct band gap up to 1.51 eV, high carrier mobility up to 105 cm2V-1s-1, giant Young's module up to 0.70 TPa, and robust dynamic, thermal and chemical stability. Moreover, Penta-Pt2N4 is a global minimal with PtN2 stoichiometry in 2D, so we also propose a CVD/MBE scheme to enable its experimental synthesis. We envision that the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 may find a wide application for future nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have aroused enormous interests due to their novel physical properties and wide ranges of potential applications. Recently, some metals sulfides with unique pentagonal configuration and electronic properties have attracted special attention. Herein, based on first-principles calculations, the stabilities, electronic structures and properties of three kinds of 2D TMDs with pentagons, namely monolayer non-novel and novel metal dichalcogenides NiS2, PdS2 and PtS2, have been theoretically studied. Compared with the other two materials, PtS2 is more stable with the cohesive energy of 5.01 eV/atom. The band gaps of NiS2, PdS2 and PtS2 are 0.87 eV, 1.08 eV and 2.01 eV, respectively. In addition, under biaxial strain, these materials were transformed from semiconductor to metal properties. The availability of tunable electronic properties provides exciting opportunities for designing artificial layered structures for applications in optoelectronics and flexible electronics.
Penta-MN8 family: First realization of type-5 pentagonal tessellation in 2D hexagonal crystals with intriguing properties

Abstract:Tessellation of the Euclidean plane by congruent pentagons has long been of great interest. However, periodic pentagonal patterns realized in crystallography reported so far are limited to type-2 or type-4 tiling in typical square lattices. Based on the recently synthesized N-18 macrocycles together with H & uuml;ckel aromaticity and 18-electron rules, we design a family of pentagonal metal polynitrides, penta-MN8 (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba; Sn, Pb; Cd; Mo, W), the first materials realization of type-5 mathematical pattern with novel pentagonal tiles in 2D hexagonal lattices. The penta-MN8 family exhibits rich stable phases (gamma,alpha,alpha' and beta) and diverse Poisson's ratios ranging from 0.299 to -0.488. Among these nitrogen-richest monolayer nitrides hitherto, penta-MgN8 possesses firm stability up to 700 K and under low pressure originating from unique aromaticity over the polymeric nitrogen network, which could be synthesized under similar to 50 GPa as confirmed by global structure search. Moreover, penta-MgN8 exhibits a fully flat band near Fermi level over the whole 2D Brillouin zone, deriving from the combination of pentagonal pattern and hexagonal lattice as verified with tight-binding model analysis. Such electronic structures fill in the blank of clear kagome flat bands in known kagome nitrides and pentagon-based materials, resulting in very heavy fermions with huge effective mass (55.7 m(0)) that are favorable to achieve quantum zero-field Wigner crystals. Our work presents a new pentagonal-materials class with unprecedented coordination, lattice symmetry, and physical properties compared to existing pentagon-based systems, which makes a breakthrough in exploring the materials realization of the mathematical models for pentagonal tessellation.

Type-1 Pentagonal Tiling Realized in 2D Penta-SrP2 Sheet.

Abstract:According to the systematic classification of pentagon-based two-dimensional (2D) materials [ Phys. Rep. 2022, 964, 1], only type-2 and type-4 out of the 15 pentagonal tiling patterns have been realized in 2D materials so far. Here, we propose the first stable pentagon-based 2D material characterized by the type-1 pentagonal tiling pattern named penta-SrP2. We find that penta-SrP2 is not only thermally and mechanically stable but also dynamically stable when the temperature is above 200 K derived from the calculations by taking both phonon renormalization and thermal expansion into consideration. Moreover, the penta-SrP2 sheet is semiconducting with an indirect band gap of 0.96 eV. These findings expand the family of pentagon-based 2D materials in morphology and provide a new perspective to explore the dynamical stability of high-temperature phases.

Abstract:Flat bands and Dirac cones in materials are at the source of the exotic electronic and topological properties. The Lieb lattice is expected to host these electronic structures, arising from quantum destructive interference. Nevertheless, the experimental realization of a two-dimensional Lieb lattice remained challenging to date due to its intrinsic structural instability. After computationally designing a Platinum-Phosphorus (Pt-P) Lieb lattice, we have successfully overcome its structural instability and synthesized it on a gold substrate via molecular beam epitaxy. Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy verified the Lieb lattice's morphology and electronic flat bands. Furthermore, topological Dirac edge states stemming from pronounced spin-orbit coupling induced by heavy Pt atoms have been predicted. These findings convincingly open perspectives for creating metal-inorganic framework-based atomic lattices, offering prospects for strongly correlated phases interplayed with topology.

Two-dimensional Pentagonal Crystals and Possible Spin-Polarized Dirac Dispersion Relations

Abstract:Based on first-principles calculations we show that the two-dimensional pentagonal (pt) structures, the compositions of pt-BN2, pt-C, and pt-Fe2S, are stable. As a common feature, they are composed of 3 components: 2 stretched honeycomb sublattices and 1 square sublattice, conferring flexibility of tailoring the properties peculiar to the graphene. Although the Dirac dispersion relation is removed in metallic pt-BN2 and insulating pt-C due to the hybridization of two honeycomb sublattices, it survives in pt-Fe2S because of the suppression of such hybridization between different spins. As a result, in the dispersion relation of pt-Fe2S spin-polarized and anisotropic Dirac cones occur. We suggest that such type of dispersion relation can be used to produce spin-filter effect by applying electric bias in a specific direction.

Stability of 2D Crystals from Tessellation

Abstract:Four classes of tessellations composed of chains of non‐hexagonal rings separated by nanoribbons of hexagonal rings are established to construct highly stable 2D crystals. Based on the interaction between polygonal rings, a modified Read–Shockley model is further proposed to describe the stability of such 2D crystals, and peculiar topological electronic structures are found. Reticular chemistry has been a cornerstone in the design of novel 2D materials. Despite numerous possibilities for topological arrangements, only a few with high symmetry can form stable networks. Here, starting from 2D carbons, four types of highly stable tessellations are discovered, which consist of chains of non‐hexagonal rings separated by hexagonal ribbons. A modified Read–Shockley model is established to perfectly describe the stability of these highly stable frameworks, which is based on the interaction between non‐hexagonal rings. Moreover, these four types of tessellations and the modified Read–Shockley model are found to be of general validity in designing highly stable 2D materials, which is verified by the calculations on polymorphs of boron nitride and molybdenum disulfide. Besides, among the studied 2D carbon allotropes, two semi‐metallic structures with highly anisotropic Dirac cones and one semimetal with a Dirac nodal line at the Fermi level are discovered, as protected by their D2h symmetry. Spin‐orbital coupling is further found to open small bandgaps for these three Dirac structures, making them nontrivial topological insulators. The in‐depth understanding of the stability of 2D crystals in this study provides a new way for rational design of 2D crystals that may show peculiar electronic structures.

Anisotropic Thermoelectric Materials: Pentagonal PtM 2 (M = S, Se, Te)

Abstract:We here report a new pentagonal network structure of the PtM2 (M = S, Se, Te) monolayers with the P21/c (no. 14) space group. The electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of the pentagonal PtM2 monolayers are calculated through the VASP and BoltzTraP codes. We verify their dynamic and thermodynamic stabilities by calculating their phonon spectra and simulating ab initio molecular dynamics. It is found that the new material belongs to the medium-wide indirect band gap semiconductors from the PBE and HSE06 methods. At 300 K, the lattice thermal conductivities (Kl) of the pentagonal PtTe2 in the x and y directions are the smallest among these three materials, being 1.77 and 5.17 W/m K, respectively. The anisotropic zT values (2.60/1.14) in the x/y direction of the pentagonal PtTe2 at 300 K are much greater than those of the pentagonal PtSe2 (1.75/0.82) and the pentagonal PtS2 (0.58/0.16) at 300 K.
