Abstract:This article examined the intricate human–animal encounters and relationships and explored how animals co-constitute consumption practices in a more than human consumption space. Our empirical results, based on participant observation and semistructured interviews conducted in cat cafés in Tianzifang, Shanghai, illustrated that the affective, relational, and imaginative encounters could stimulate interspecies connections between humans and animals in urban commercial context, where animals could show their agency through generating value, providing healing functions and establishing emotional bonds through their co-working with human staff and co-constitute consumption practices with consumers in cat cafés. We further developed the understanding of animal labour in the urban consumption context, emphasizing that it is not only an immaterial, affective process developed through different multi-species interactions, encounters and negotiations, in which animals need to adapt to the social environment set by humans to satisfy human economic or emotional needs, but also an attempt to endow animals with a social status to make animals more visible. The increase in such multi-species encounters prompted us to examine relations with nonhumans within a consumption context that has notable ethical implications and debates.

Abstract:Tujuan penelitian ini adalah penulis ingin membuat cafe yang mengusung tematik dalam perancangannya. Cafe tersebut berada di 90 Gourment, Cihapit, Bandung. Kucing merupakan salah satu hewan peliharaan paling popular di kalangan masyarakat saat ini. Hewan yang lucu dan menggemaskan ini membuat banyak orang tertarik untuk memelihara, maka dari itu designer ingin membuat cafe yang bertemakan kucing. Konsep yang akan di terapkan pada perancangan ini adalah Harmony of Friendship, yang terinspirasi dari sejarah penjinakan kucing di masa lalu. Harmony of Friendship berarti kesatuan dalam persahabatan. Tempat ini didesain sedemikian sehingga tercipta hubungan yang baik antara manusia dengan kucing, serta antara sesama kucing.

Abstract:Dans ce travail, je m'interesse au role et a la popularite contemporaine du chat, a travers, notamment, de l'exemple de deux cat cafes montrealais, et dans l'histoire qui precede son statut actuel. J'explore les ressemblances et les differences qui existent entre les figures felines du passe, et le chat du cat cafe moderne. Ce memoire est ainsi divise en deux parties distinctes, qui ont fait appel a deux types de methodologie differents. Dans un premier temps, j'ai fait une recherche documentaire sur les differentes representations du chat, pour pouvoir presenter les bases pour une mythanalyse de ce symbole. Dans la premiere partie de ce memoire je documente ainsi l'histoire des representations symbolique de cet animal, des debuts de la domestication, jusqu'a aujourd'hui, en focalisant sur deux themes principaux : « la guerison » et « la domesticite». Vu que mon objet central est le cat cafe, je m'interesse a la region mediterraneenne, l'origine du chat domestique, et a l'Asie, ou est ne le phenomene du cat cafe. Pour la deuxieme composante de ma recherche, j'ai effectue une recherche de terrain dans les deux premiers cat cafe en Amerique du Nord, le Cafe des Chats et le Cafe Chat l'Heureux, tous deux situes a Montreal. Dans la deuxieme partie de mon memoire, je presente une ethnographie de ces lieux, base sur les resultats d'observations; de discussions formelles et informelles avec de nombreux clients et employes des cafes; d'une centaine de questionnaires; et de plusieurs entretiens formels avec quelques clients reguliers du cafe et les proprietaires. En la combinant avec ma recherche documentaire, cette ethnographie cherche a definir les elements essentiels qui caracterisent le phenomene contemporain du cat cafe. Abstract:Currently, many people keep cats and dogs at home, in fact, according to research, keeping cats and dogs can relieve stress for pet parents. Cats and dogs are no longer just pets but are like family for pet parents. Veterinarians and pet shops are everywhere, this indicates that many people are starting to keep and love their cats and dogs. The need for technology regarding pets is also increasing, encouraging people involved in the IT world to create applications. One of the needs is how to design the right UX/UI for an application related to pets, especially cats and dogs. The intended users are pet parents. How can it be easy for pet parents to use this application so that pet parents get a user experience and user interface that is comfortable and enjoyable so that the purpose of creating the application can be achieved well. Comparing the 10 selected journals according to the criteria using the narrative review method, it was found that the second journal was the best among the other nine journals.

[Maggie's Tokyo's Human Support the Meaning of Where Now ? And Cancer Journey]

Abstract:The landscape architect Maggie Jencks felt that she wanted a place to "get herself back" when her breast cancer recurred and was told that she only had a few months remaining. Mr. Charles Jencks, her husband who fulfilled her wishes, opened the first "Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre" in Edinburgh in 1996. Masako Akiyama, the chief of Maggie's Tokyo found out about Maggie's Centre when she listened to a presentation from Andrew Anderson, the director of Maggie's Edinburgh, at an International Nursing Seminar in 2008. Masako Akiyama realized that support to "get back ones own power" is one of the important things. In addition, she felt that providing a "place" and "support" to patients and their families were predominant elements. When someone is diagnosed with cancer, the person gets a great shock and feels loneliness. Suddenly the person feels tomorrow will not come, every day becomes uncertain. These feelings affect their whole life such as enrollment, employment, loss of role, and change. They also affect people such as family, friends, colleagues, besides the person. Due to changes in treatment, the existential troubles that have been prolonged after the completion of the initial treatment appear. Cancer survivorship is called "Cancer journey"in the Maggie's flow. The cancer journey suddenly starts, when a person is diagnosed with cancer", without direction or a plan. Additionally, the "heart"is often left behind. To undertake the cancer journey, there are a lot of forks in the road that cannot turn back and they are urged to choose their path. "Where now ?"is a phrase in a pamphlet from Maggie's Centre, and the phrase shows that staff of Maggie's Centre can help cancer patient to recognize where they are in their Cancer journey. The Maggie's Centre has 2 important pillars: "building/environment"and "human support". As a "homely place" between hospital and my house, the building is "a healing space". Human support is provided free of charge and patients and families can stop by without reservation. Experienced cancer specialists and medical staff are always available. Unlike previous supportive methods for patients such as giving information and helping to solve problems, Maggie's emphasizes the 3 points of "snuggling up to each individual", "equal footing" and "to cherish their likeness empowerment". By talking to Maggie's medical professionals, patients and families can find their "heart" and regain their original strength.

Abstract:In Natsume Soseki's "I Am A Cat", the cat's point of view is used to criticize the current bad situation of the society, and rely on the unbiased standpoint to see the bourgeoisie's oppression of others and the status quo of being rich and ungrateful, as well as the intellectuals led by Bitter Shamisen's anger and helplessness towards the current situation of the society. Lao She, who was also in the background of an era, wrote "A Tale of Cat City", which also used the image of cats. As a normal person, "I" observed the life of cat people and saw the disorder and panic in their lives to express my disappointment in the times and my confusion about the future path. The two writers, who are not connected with reality, coincidentally use the same imagery to reflect the social reality. Based on the two works, comparisons are used to understand the struggles and contributions of the Chinese people on the road of eastern modernization, and to reflect their character as the initiators of the modern countries of the East.

Abstract:This article examines the Japanese cat café boom, which peaked in 2009 yet remains a significant retail phenomenon throughout Japan, and in particular Tokyo. How do humans encounter animals in contemporary Japan, not as private owners and companions, but as consumers seeking direct, sensory engagement with cats at a moment of profound social and economic anxieties? Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Tokyo, this article examines how cats have become a newly emergent commodity within the ‘healing boom’ that first emerged in recessionary-era 1990s Japan. Such healing commodities – therapeutic music, aromatherapy, robot interaction, among others – are designed to invoke an affective engagement with the consumer in order to cope with the uncertain and stressful conditions of life in still recessionary, and now post 3/11, Japan. I situate cat cafés within the increasing immaterialization of the economy in post-bubble Japan during which social relationships have become commodified and marketed to those who can afford it. Cats are the affective object through which patrons seek a sense of healing and relaxation.

Abstract:Describing the relationship with one’s cat in human terms might reflect an underlying anthropomorphic view of the relationship which might be associated with an owner’s behavior towards their cat and the cat’s living environment. Owners self-categorized the relationship with their cat as either a ‘member of the family’, ‘as a child’, ‘best friend’, or ‘a pet animal’. The extent to which owner- and cat-related factors influence these four relationship descriptions are examined in survey data of approximately 1800 cat owners. Differences in outdoor access, care during absence of the owner, and access to the bedroom are examined between the four relationship perceptions. The owner’s age and household composition, ideas about their cat’s equality, support, and dependency, and whether their cat is a pedigree were significantly associated with relationship description and explained 46% of the variance. Owners who perceive their cat as a child or best friend see their cat as loyal, empathetic, equal to family, and dependent on them for love and care. Their cats are less often left in the care of others, are allowed more often in the bedroom and have less often (unrestricted) outdoor access. Moreover, cats perceived as children are more likely to live in a multi-cat household. Our results provide insight in the factors that are related to different (anthropomorphic) perceptions of the human–cat relationship and how perceptions relate to the living environment of cats.

Abstract:Abstract This paper traces how Maneki-Neko becomes appropriated by a specific demographic of people (mostly business owners) in China as Zhaocaimao since the 1980s, and travels with the recent Chinese migrants to South Africa after Apartheid. It aims to demonstrate how the flows of people and cultural symbols were mutually constructed through the ongoing, intersected process of adaptation and appropriation in new territories. A multimodal discourse analysis was performed on texts and images collected from interviews with ten people in Johannesburg’s Chinatowns. The paper arises from the conceptual backdrop of Sanders’s (2015) theory on adaptation and appropriation and Appadurai’s (1990) work on disjunctures in the politics of global culture. It argues that the process of sustained engagement between Maneki-Neko and the Chinese people who have appropriated it is mutually constructed and undergoes constant geopolitically embedded transformations of sinification as Maneki-Neko travels to new circumstances and contexts. Notably, the transnational appropriation and adaption of cultural symbols from folk traditions in a diasporic context create a sense of empowerment and ownership. Zhaocaimao in South Africa has become a symbol of a micro-identity against the backdrop of the disjunctive global economy and culture of today which turns the locality into a discursive field of Chinese identity/Chineseness and a site of ritual economy.

Abstract:As technology continues to advance, the interaction between humans and cats is becoming more diverse. Our research introduces a new tool called the AI Cat Narrator, which offers a unique perspective on the shared lives of humans and cats. We combined the method of ethnography with fictional storytelling, using a defamiliarization strategy to merge real-world data seen through the eyes of cats with excerpts from cat literature. This combination serves as the foundation for a database to instruct the AI Cat Narrator in crafting alternative narrative. Our findings indicate that using defamiliarized data for training purposes significantly contributes to the development of characters that are both more empathetic and individualized. The contributions of our study are twofold: 1) proposing an innovative approach to prompting a reevaluation of living alongside cats; 2) establishing a collaborative, exploratory tool developed by humans, cats, and AI together.

Abstract:This essay attempts to show that Tsai's Stray Dogs (2013) offers a social critique of Taipei as a neoliberal, global, consumer city, and by so doing establishes a cinema of contemplation through such cinematic devices as the sustained long-take and slow, virtually still cinematic images. By developing Walter Benjamin's formulation of the dialectical image, this essay explores the extent to which Tsai's cinematic aesthetics reveals an aspect of the city which cannot be shown otherwise. It argues that his slow cinema creates a potentially revolutionary awakening in an audience accustomed to an immersive mode of cinematic experience which turns the suffering of others into a commodity and prevents a proper understanding of a societal phenomenon that calls for urgent attention. I compare the protagonist with other marginalized and destitute figures in such nineteenth-century literary texts as Dickens's Sketches by Boz (1836), Baudelaire's prose poem "Good Dogs" (1865-67), and Hamsun's Hunger (1890), and those in the Sinophone films including Hou Hsiao-hsien's The Sandwich Man (1983) and Jia Zhang-he's Xiao Wu (1997).

Abstract:Can Xue is a famous female writer in Chinese contemporary literature, known as the "Kafka of Asia". Her works are loved by a worldwide audience, especially in Japan and many Western countries. Her work requires the reader's patience through experiencing different emotions and feelings in the lonely art world that she opens. It is a world whose center is the depth of self, and the “humanity” of man. And readers with different perceptions and attitudes of the post-modern era when entering that art world will certainly sympathize with the loneliness, loss, and disconnection of the characters. The loneliness appears as a constant in the lives of the characters while they cannot name their emotions to balance their own soul. Thereby, readers reflect on themselves in the real world, rebalance their bruised self, and aim to open up their soul towards Beauty and Goodness without compromising with the Bad, the Evil in the work. After the process of empathy, the lonely "self" is purified and awakened – the own worth is realized. Loneliness is an inevitable part of human nature. One should be content with the loneliness, be friends with one's "inner child", enrich one's self-worth to become a positive individual in the civilized community, to lead a healthy lifestyle of an adult in modern society.

Abstract:A survey of elderly women was carried out to discover their attitudes towards pet cats. The women were living in publicly-owned pensioner housing in two New Zealand cities. In one city cats were allowed in the pensioners' housing and in the other city they were not. Attitudes towards cats were more positive in the city where cats were allowed, and more positive if pensioners owned a cat, or wished to own one. As positive attitudes towards cats outweighed negative ones, the City Authority which had prohibited cats reversed its policy. There was conflicting evidence about the role of cats in reducing feelings of loneliness. It appears that “loneliness” signifies the loss of many aspects of social interaction and that pets may substitute for only some of these interactions.

Under the rapid development of smart life and digital transformation, making technology serve the people, and strengthening people's connection in the real world, has become an important topic. The purpose of this dissertation is to reshape and expand the historical cafes’ function as third space under the trend of digital transformation of the catering industry and improve the offline experience of consumers and enhance the competitiveness of cafes through the development of the new operation mode of compound spaces. This research analyzed the impact on the cafe market in the post-pandemic era and takes Starbucks as an example to explore the reasons for the depression of the coffee market. Through literature review and field research, this study verified that coffee shops, as a social place for work and study with a long history, were loved by many people. Compared with the library and home, freelancers and students preferred to work and study in a comfortable coffee shop. However, with the home isolation policies of the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing maturity of the shared offices in recent years, the business of both chain coffee shops, and local cafes had been affected.

Dalam pengembangan produknya, wahana memberikan sebuah inovasi yang dirancang untuk memenuhi seluruh kebutuhan kucing para cat lover. Perjuangan demi perjuangan yang di capainya, membuat wahana ingin mengembangkan bisnisnya dalam memenuhi kebutuhan para konsumennya. Dalam konteks ini, wahana merancang sebuah ide dalam bidang usaha kuliner, dimana sebuah fasilitas umum yaitu Cafe, dirancang dengan konsep Cat Playground yang dapat dinikmati oleh seluruh cat lover. Dalam hal ini, ditemukan beberapa masalah yang dapat dipecahkan dengan kajian desain serta ilmu dalam merancang, terbentuklah sebuah Cafe yang dapat menambah value dari brand maupun produk itu sendiri. Maka, pada akhir kata disimpulkan bahwa cat cafe, merupakan media fasilitas umum yang bisa menjadi peluang sekaligus inovasi yang baru terhadap perkembangan konsep-konsep cafe yang ada di Indonesia. Dalam pengembangan Cat Cafe pada tugas akhir ini, penulis ingin menciptakan sebuah desain ruang yang memadukan antara kenyamanan pengguna serta kucingnya. Dengan penyajian konsep desain berupa fun playground, diharapkan pengunjung turut berpartisipasi dalam suasana permainan atraktif dengan kucing yang disediakan. Konsep furniture segitiga diharapkan mampu menjadi point of interest dari ruang tersebut, sehingga dapat menarik minat pengunjung.

Abstract:Xiao Hong is one of the four most talented women of the Republic of China in the modern era, and is known as “the goddess of literature” of the 1930s. Xiao Hong can be said to be a female writer with a unique artistic style at that time. In terms of literary creation, her works contain a mixture of sad and happy emotional tone as well as a rigid and soft language style. Xiao Hong’s writing is fresh and natural because she believed in beauty even though she was traumatized. Xiao Hong’s works are mostly self-referential, and her way of writing is unique in that she does not write in the usual way of thinking, but describes everything she is familiar with in an extremely natural and unfamiliar language.
