Abstract:Ship hydrodynamics is a key discipline in ship design. It determines, to a large extent, two fundamental properties inherent to any new design: the safety of a ship on one hand and the efficiency on the other. While the entire, holistic ship design as anticipated in the HOLISHIP (www.holiship.eu) project aims to balance the two requirements in an optimised way, hydrodynamic considerations will form a set of boundary conditions for the achievable optimum. The present chapter introduces the key elements requiring hydrodynamic analysis and presents relevant tools available to achieve adequate results during different design stages for a new ship. The focus is placed on the tools which are or will be integrated into the HOLISHIP design platforms during the project and how they can be put to use during different stages of ship design.
Hydrodynamic Analysis and Motion Simulation of Fin and Propeller Driven Manta Ray Robot

Abstract:Current research on the hydrodynamics of manta ray robots is limited to the qualitative study of pectoral fin performance; other aspects such as the hydrodynamics and motion simulation of the overall robot are rarely addressed. A hydrodynamic analysis is therefore used in this study in conjunction with a six degrees of freedom (6DOF) motion equation to conduct motion simulations predicting the hydrodynamic characteristics and motion performance of a proposed manta ray robot. Though the rising and diving motions of manta ray robots are typically realized through a buoyancy adjustment device or a rudder used for attitude adjustment, these methods are slow. This study accordingly proposes a hybrid manta ray robot driven by two pectoral fins and two vertical propellers used as auxiliary power for attitude adjustment. A structural model of the proposed manta ray robot is provided and used to conduct a complete hydrodynamics analysis and establish the 6DOF motion equation. An empirical equation is then established to describe the hydrodynamics of the pectoral fins, and its applicability is proven using a computational fluid dynamics simulation. The motion of the robot is predicted in different situations using motion simulations, demonstrating that the robot provides relatively good motion performance. The relationship between the forward speed of the robot and the flapping speed of the pectoral fins is then discussed based on the simulation results. The motion simulation results also show that the propellers can effectively adjust the posture of the robot and help to improve robot motion stability by countering the effects of the pectoral fin flapping movement. Finally, the applicability of the 6DOF motion equation simplify verified by a computational fluid dynamics motion simulation. The findings of this study are expected to provide theoretical guidance for the optimization of the proposed manta ray robot structure and its control system design.

Abstract:In inland waterways, waves generated by passing boats cause the movement of riprap used for bank protection and stabilization. Previous studies have mainly concerned the natural channel erosion problem caused by wind-generated waves and neglected the research and findings on shipping behavior. This work presents a coupling of the computational fluid dynamics model and the discrete element method. The aim is to first study the interactions between ship waves in the confined channel and the movements of the riprap of the banks and shorelines and second to analyze the stability of these armourstones under the actions of various ship velocities and draught depths. These varying conditions exert influence on the ship-induced waves, the crucial point being the drawdown amplitude, and consequently create more intense flow behavior in the near-shore region, which results in instability and destruction of the overall structure of the armor protection layer. The higher ship velocity and the larger draught depth lead to the aggravation of instability processes of the blocs composing the protective layer. There is a critical phenomenon in the influence mechanism of vessel velocity, whereas the variation process induced by draught depth is relatively linear. In addition, the stability of the blocs also depends on their shapes, sizes, and the initial positions within the protective layer. This study could contribute to the high-quality development of inland navigation.

Abstract:Traditionally, submarine hydrodynamic design has focussed mainly on requirements regarding operational range, powering performance and manoeuvring ability for deeply submerged conditions. To improve the effectiveness of the boat, attention is also paid to operating near or at the surface and fortunately, computational tools and experimental methods are available to analyse the performance of submarines at these conditions. To advance submarine hydrodynamics knowledge and tools, DMO and MARIN have conducted a wide variety of bi-lateral or collaborative studies using potential and viscous flow methods and experiments on several submarine hull forms. In this article, several examples are presented of the development and use of hydrodynamic tools available during the design and assessment process of future submarines. These examples range from experimental and numerical studies into at-surface and periscope-depth resistance and powering, periscope-depth manoeuvring, high-fidelity flow around the boat during straight flight and manoeuvring motions, wakes of surface-piercing masts, to depth keeping under waves. It is demonstrated how state-of-the-art studies help in advancing the knowledge on submarine hydrodynamics and improving the overall design of modern submarines.

Abstract:The principal objective of this investigation is to assess the hydrodynamic characteristics and the exciting forces induced by waves acting upon a shallowly submerged spheroid. This study focuses on an arbitrarily shaped spheroid body with a vertical axis, fully immersed beneath the free surface within waters of finite depth. The methodology outlined here necessitates solving the linear hydrodynamic diffraction and radiation problems, which entail discretizing the flow field around the body into ring-shaped fluid regions. Within each region, expansions of axisymmetric eigenfunctions of the velocity potential are employed. Complementing the theoretical framework, numerical methodologies are employed utilizing panel models across the wetted surface of the submerged body. Extensive numerical results concerning the exciting forces induced and the hydrodynamic coefficients are presented in the framework of frequency domain formulations. Through the current analysis, the phenomenon of negative added mass and rapid variations in the added mass and damping coefficients is confirmed, attributed to the free surface effect elucidated in terms of the presence of near-resonant standing waves above the submerged body.

Abstract:As a key component of surface and underwater ships, marine propulsion systems have experienced a long evolution, from a single paddle used in sculling to the Archimedes’ screw to modern propellers, e.g. screw propeller, pump-jet propulsion and rim-driven thruster. Due to rapid industrial development and the accompanying pressure on the marine ecological environment, there is a huge and urgent need for new marine propulsion technologies, with the goals of higher power efficiency, reduced emissions and reduced noise level. In recent decades, with the development of computational and experimental techniques, hydrodynamic performance and the associated acoustic properties of the marine propulsion have been investigated extensively to optimize hydrodynamic design and explore new concepts for marine propulsion. This Special Section aims to highlight recent advances in theoretical, numerical and experimental methods for modelling marine propulsion, understanding of the underlying flow physics and noise generation mechanisms and optimization approaches for improving hydrodynamic performance and suppressing the noise. Abstract:Offshore structures are generally classified as small-scale structures or large-scale structures. Their wave forces are then estimated by Morison equation and diffraction/radiation theories, respectively. However, the classification criterion is not well quantified. In the present paper, a numerical wave flume is established to simulate the wave forces acting on a fixed and vertical surface-piercing circular cylinder under linear waves. By solving Navier–Stokes equation and Euler equation with free surface involved, respectively, the viscous force and inertia force are separated accurately. The variation of viscous force and inertia force with the cylinder diameter to wave length ratio is discussed in detail. The scale intervals for significant viscous and diffraction effects are given. The error caused by neglecting viscous and diffraction forces is quantitatively analyzed. Based on these analysis, the concept of medium-scale structure is proposed and the classification criteria for small-, medium- and large-scale structures are given. In the meantime, the estimation methods of wave forces for different scales of structures are suggested.

Abstract:A numerical procedure is described for predicting wave exciting forces and motions of multiple three-dimensional bodies of arbitrary shape freely floating in waves. The developed numerical approach is based on combination of a three-dimensional source distribution method and interaction theory which is exact within the context of linear potential theory. The method presented is applicable to an arbitrary number of three-dimentional bodies having any geometrical arrangement and individual body geometries. Numerical results of wave exciting forces and motions of two freely floating bodies in shallow water are compared with those obtained in the literature. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach. Finally, the interaction effects are examined in the case of an array of 40 (4 by 10) freely floating rectangular bodies in shallow water.

Abstract:This paper explores the implications of complex geometry enabled by computational technology to architectural theory and practice. It reviews the different design paradigms engaged breaking the horizontality of the floor and ceiling or fusing them together. It argues that current advances in fluid dynamics simulations open a new frontier in the conception of the usable architectural surface, in which the architectural product is no longer a fixed object, but the interaction between a fluid, changing environment and built form. The paper presents a case study in which computational fluid dynamics are utilized to reconvert a disused breakwater into a ‘blue garden’. The morphology of the breakwater and its texture are calculated to produce the conditions amiable for supporting a varied marine ecosystem, and to shape the waves to generate aesthetically meaningful sensations. The essay discusses the technical and conceptual challenges of controlling the non-linear behaviour of fluids. It then speculates on the theoretical ramifications of having the surface interact with exterior forces and the subject's imagination to produce an event enfolding in time..

Abstract:This research fills the gap in understanding fluid-structure interaction (FSI) from wave diffraction forces on CALM buoys and cylindrical structures, based on the hydrodynamics with connections. Recently, there is an increased application of (un)loading marine hoses for Catenary Anchor Leg Moorings (CALM) buoy systems in the offshore industry due to the need for more flexible marine structures that are cost-saving, easier to install, and service. However, different operational issues challenge these hoses, like during hose disconnection. Also, the fluid behaviour was investigated based on the analytical and numerical models. The numerical modelling involves the boundary element method (BEM) and Orcaflex line theory. Hydrodynamic analysis is conducted on the disconnection-induced load response of marine bonded hoses during normal operation and accidental operation under irregular waves. A comparative study on hose performance during normal operation and accidental operation is also presented. Results of statistical analysis on CALM buoy system shows good motion characteristics.

Hydrodynamics of Semi-Submersible Vehicle Hulls with Variable Height-Width Ratio in Deep and Shallow Water

Abstract:Semi-submersible vehicles keep most of their hulls underwater while maintaining a small platform above the water surface. These craft can find use for both naval operations and civil transportation due to special properties, including the low above-water hull profile, reduced wave drag in some speed regimes, and potentially better seaworthiness. However, hydrodynamics of these marine craft is not well studied. In this work, computational modeling is undertaken to explore steady hydrodynamic characteristics of several semi-submersible hull variations in a range of speeds in deep-water and finite-depth conditions. The validation and verification study is conducted using experimental data obtained with a Suboff model in a near-surface regime. Parametric simulations are performed for this hull and two others generated by modifying the original Suboff geometry to produce narrow and wide hull shapes with similar volumes. The computational results indicate that the narrow hull excels in deep water, having lower drag and experiencing lower downward suction force and smaller longitudinal moment. However, in shallow-water operations, the narrow hull exhibits noticeably larger resistance than other hulls with the same displacement due to smaller gap between the hull and sea floor. Main hydrodynamic characteristics of the studied hulls and illustrations of wave patterns are presented in the paper. These findings can be useful for designers of semi-submersible vehicles.

Abstract:The main purpose of the present paper is to cover the lack of a reference point in the literature providing a comprehensive review of the state of the art, recent developments, and future challenges relatives to analytical, experimental, and numerical approaches tailored for the field of dynamic characterization of floating offshore wind turbines, with a focus on aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, and anchoring systems. The Real Time Hybrid Approach makes it possible to overcome some of the problems associated with the scaling laws of the classical experimental approach, so the development of advanced actuators in association with numerical models that can guarantee accurate simulation and low computational burden are the main challenges of these approaches. In the field of numerical modeling, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics methods show the highest levels of accuracy for studying fluid–structure interaction. Associated with this, the identification of analytical or semi-analytical formulations to solve coupled problems related to the dynamic characterization of floating offshore wind turbines could offer considerable contribution to overcome the limitations arising from the computational burdens of numerical methods. For future developments, additional topics of interest include a deeper investigation in terms of control strategies, wind farms, including wake effects, shared anchors, and mooring lines, as well as the use of new materials in mooring lines.

Abstract:This paper discusses how the use of today's computational tools can lead to a quick advance of the field of ship hydrodynamics, by answering long existing questions, indicating simple models and demonstrating design trends. Some examples are given of subjects for which analysis of computational results, from RANS and free-surface potential flow codes, has led to improved understanding of the flow. The first example describes how better understanding of ship wave making and its dependence on the hull form has been obtained from analysis of potential flow calculations. The resulting insight is still used in the context of CFD-based hull form optimisation. The second example describes how questions regarding the model-to-ship extrapolation of experimental results have been solved using RANS computations. The last example shows how computational study of shallow-water effects has led to a method to correct for tank width effects in model measurements; to an improved model-to-ship extrapolation procedure for shallow water tests; and to a simple trial correction method for moderate shallow-water effects. The examples are meant to illustrate and promote this sort of research, and subjects are mentioned for which similar progress can probably be made using CFD methods.

Abstract:In recent years, the number of offshore floating structures has been growing and is expected to continue growing. Due to climate change, the frequency and severity of extreme waves are increasing. Numerical models can be a strategic tool in the reliable design and optimization of marine structures. However, the number of numerical parameters to be tuned plays a crucial role, as they could limit the model's applicability and reliability. Furthermore, there are many challenges in modelling wave-structure interaction. Among these challenges, the simulation of one-dimensional tethers is of great concern when dealing with moored floating structures. In this study, a 3D numerical model is developed based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) technique. This hydrodynamic model is coupled with a multi-body solver for the dynamic analysis of moorings and structures. In a three-dimensional numerical flume, focused ocean waves are generated with a piston-type wave-maker and propagated until impact with the floating structure. The developed model predicts the wave profile, impact forces, and structural dynamics, and is validated by comparing numerical results against experimental data.

Abstract:The principal goal of this research is developing physics-based, reduced-order, analytical models of nonlinear fluid–structure interactions associated with offshore structures. Our primary focus is to generalize the Hamilton's variational framework so that systems of flow-oscillator equations can be derived from first principles. This is an extension of earlier work that led to a single energy equation describing the fluid–structure interaction. It is demonstrated here that flow-oscillator models are a subclass of the general, physical-based framework. A flow-oscillator model is a reduced-order mechanical model, generally comprising two mechanical oscillators, one modelling the structural oscillation and the other a nonlinear oscillator representing the fluid behaviour coupled to the structural motion. Reduced-order analytical model development continues to be carried out using a Hamilton's principle-based variational approach. This provides flexibility in the long run for generalizing the modelling paradigm to complex, three-dimensional problems with multiple degrees of freedom, although such extension is very difficult. As both experimental and analytical capabilities advance, the critical research path to developing and implementing fluid–structure interaction models entails formulating generalized equations of motion, as a superset of the flow-oscillator models; and developing experimentally derived, semi-analytical functions to describe key terms in the governing equations of motion. The developed variational approach yields a system of governing equations. This will allow modelling of multiple d.f. systems. The extensions derived generalize the Hamilton's variational formulation for such problems. The Navier–Stokes equations are derived and coupled to the structural oscillator. This general model has been shown to be a superset of the flow-oscillator model. Based on different assumptions, one can derive a variety of flow-oscillator models.

Abstract:Recently, offshore renewable energy has received significant attentions from most oceanic countries. Its multiple disciplinary nature appears as a hot research spot. Among those resources, offshore wind has been experiencing a rapid growth with strong industrial and governmental support. Among the research topics related to offshore wind turbine, those related to efficiency and safety issue receive most attentions, and they cover hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, elasticity and so on. Hydrodynamics is considered as the key of these research for offshore wind turbine. This is not only because it is the fundamental of ocean engineering, but also it is similar to low speed aerodynamics which is the key of wind turbine rotor. In order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the important problems of offshore wind turbine hydrodynamics, we briefly review the evolution of offshore wind turbine and discuss the hydrodynamics problem associated with the research and development activities.

Abstract:The present study investigates the effect of moorings on hybrid floating breakwaters of different configurations based on potential flow theory. The mooring analysis is performed for the regular wave incidence for five different shapes of hybrid floating breakwaters, namely, rectangular, box, H, Π, and trapezoidal, integrated with a single J-shaped oscillating water column (OWC). The mooring lines are considered to be nonlinear catenary sections that are analysed for open mooring and cross mooring configuration. The hydrodynamic analysis is performed using Ansys-AQWA and the effectiveness of the moorings is evaluated in terms of the mooring line tension and the floating structure's motion response, and comparisons are made for the influence of different mooring configurations and the implications of changing the design of the hybrid floating breakwater. The regular gravity wave frequency range is taken into consideration and the hydrodynamic properties are reported for the entire range of regular wave frequencies. Additionally, for a few chosen wave frequencies the analysis of structural forces and moment is performed for long and short waves. The study suggests that a hydrodynamically stable hybrid floating structure integrated with an oscillating water column can provide good and effective wave energy conversion and wave attenuation. Thus, with the help of the findings of the present study, the researchers will be able to examine the stability of hybrid floating breakwater structures under the action of regular waves with normal incidence.

Abstract:Improved designs for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) are becoming increasingly important due to their utility in academic and industrial applications. However, a majority of such testing and design is carried out under conditions that may not reflect the operating environment of shallow water AUVs. This may lead to imprecise estimations of the AUV's performance and sub-optimal designs. This article presents experimental and numerical studies carried out in conjunction, to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of AUV hulls at different Reynolds numbers over sloped channel-beds. We carry out experiments to measure the velocity field and turbulent statistics around the AUV with quantified uncertainty. These are contrasted against corresponding flat bed experiments to gauge the effect of test bed topography on AUV performance. The experimental data was used to validate Reynolds Stress Model predictions. Hydrodynamic parameters such as drag, pressure and skin friction coefficients were predicted from the RSM simulations at different test bed slopes, angles of attack and drift angles of the AUV hull, to analyze the hydrodynamic performance of the AUV. The results presented in this article offer avenues for design improvement of AUVs operating in shallow environments, such as the continental slope and estuaries.

Abstract:In complex ocean dynamics environment, the mechanism revelation of dynamic responding and stability assessment of marine structures built on seafloors are key scientific and technological issues in the field of ocean engineering. Some coupled models for wave-structure interaction have been developed employing Navier-Stokes solvers based on the finite volume method (FVM), i.e., OpenFOAM in previous studies. However, these grid-based CFD methods were not good at handling the breaking of extreme waves, and their computational scale was frequently limited, as well as the mesh generation process was relatively complex. In this study, a Navier-Stokes solver based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method from the Lagrangian perspective is utilized to simulate the complex wave motions, and the FEA software FssiCAS and the SPH solver DualSPHysics are integrated together through the way of data exchange at solid-fluid interfaces. Then a one-way coupling numerical model for fluid-structure-seabed interaction is established. The reliability of the developed one-way coupling model is validated adopting a typical analytical solution and several wave flume tests. Finally, the developed one-way coupling model is applied to explore the dynamic responses, and evaluate the stability of the revetement breakwater built on reclaimed coral sand foundation in the South China Sea.
