Abstract:On the basis of first principle calculations, we show that a hexagonal structure of Fe2Si is a ferromagnetic crystal. The result of the phonon spectra indicates that it is a stable structure. Such material exhibits a spin-polarized and half-metal-like band structure. From the calculations of generalized gradient approximation, metallic and semiconducting behaviors are observed with a direct and nearly 0 eV band gap in various spin channels. The densities of states in the vicinity of the Fermi level is mainly contributed from the d-electrons of Fe. We calculate the reflection spectrum of Fe2Si, which has minima at 275nm and 3300nm with reflectance of 0.27 and 0.49, respectively. Such results may provide a reference for the search of hexagonal Fe2Si in experiments. With this band characteristic, the material may be applied in the field of novel spintronics devices.
FeS2 Monolayer: a High Valence and High-T_ C Ising Ferromagnet

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials are currently of great interest for their promising applications in spintronics. Strong magnetic coupling and anisotropy are both highly desirable for the achievement of hightemperature magnetic order. Here we propose the unusual high -valence FeS2 hexagonal monolayer as such candidate for a strong Ising 2D ferromagnet by spin -orbital state analyses, first -principles calculations, and the renormalized spin -wave theory (RSWT). We find that, very importantly, the high -valence Fe4+ ion is in the low -spin state (t42g, S = 1) with degenerate t2g orbitals rather than the high -spin state (t32ge1g, S = 2). It is the low -spin state that allows us to carry a large perpendicular orbital moment and then produces a huge single -ion anisotropy (SIA) of 25 meV/Fe. Moreover, the negative charge -transfer character associated with the unusual high valence, strong Fe 3d -S 3p hybridization, wide bands, and a small band gap all help to establish a strong superexchange. Indeed, our first -principles calculations confirm the strong ferromagnetic superexchange and the huge perpendicular SIA, both of which are further enhanced by a compressive strain. Then, our RSWT calculations predict that the ferromagnet TC is 261 K for the pristine FeS2 monolayer and could be increased to 409 K under -5% compressive strain. The high TC is also reproduced by our Monte Carlo simulations. Therefore, it is worth exploring high-TC Ising ferromagnets in high -valence 2D magnetic materials with degenerate orbitals.
Two-Dimensional Iron Silicide (FeSi<sub><i>x</i></sub>) Alloys with Above-Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism have gathered tremendous interest as promising candidates for next-generation spintronics. Here, on the basis of first-principles calculations, we report a family of stable 2D iron silicide (FeSix) alloys via dimensional reduction of their bulk counterparts. Our results demonstrate that 2D Fe4Si2-hex, Fe4Si2-orth, Fe3Si2, and FeSi2 nanosheets are lattice-dynamically and thermally stable, confirmed by the calculated phonon spectra and Born-Oppenheimer dynamic simulation up to 1000 K. 2D FeSix nanosheets are ferromagnetic metals with estimated Curie temperatures ranging from 547 to 971 K due to strong direct exchange interaction between Fe sites. In addition, the electronic properties of 2D FeSix alloys can be maintained on silicon substrates, providing an ideal platform for spintronics applications in the nanoscale.

An Insulating Ground State with Novel Antiferromagnetic Order in FeSe Monolayer

Abstract:A monolayer FeSe thin film grown on ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$(001) (STO) shows the sign of ${T}_{c}g77\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$, which is higher than the ${T}_{c}$ record of 56 K for bulk FeAs-based superconductors. However, little is known about the magnetic ground state of FeSe, which should be closely related to its unusual superconductivity. Previous studies presume the collinear stripe antiferromagnetic (AFM) state as the ground state of FeSe, the same as that in FeAs superconductors. Here we find a magnetic order named the ``pair-checkerboard AFM'' as the magnetic ground state of tetragonal FeSe. The pair-checkerboard order results from the interplay between the nearest-, next-nearest, and unnegligible next-next-nearest neighbor magnetic exchange couplings of Fe atoms. The monolayer FeSe in pair-checkerboard order shows an unexpected insulating behavior with a Dirac-cone-like band structure related to the specific orbital order of the ${d}_{xz}$ and ${d}_{yz}$ characters of Fe atoms, which could explain the recently observed insulator-superconductor transition. The present results cast insights on the magnetic ordering in FeSe monolayer and its derived superconductors.
Room-Temperature Ferromagnetism in Two-Dimensional Fe2Si Nanosheet with Enhanced Spin-Polarization Ratio

Abstract:Searching experimental feasible two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic crystals with large spin-polarization ratio, high Curie temperature and large magnetic anisotropic energy is one key to develop next-generation spintronic nanodevices. Here, 2D Fe2Si nanosheet, one counterpart of Hapkeite mineral discovered in meteorite with novel magnetism is proposed on the basis of first-principles calculations. The 2D Fe2Si crystal has a slightly buckled triangular lattice with planar hexacoordinated Si and Fe atoms. The spin-polarized calculations with hybrid HSE06 function method indicate that 2D Fe2Si is a ferromagnetic half metal at its ground state with 100% spin-polarization ratio at Fermi energy level. The phonon spectrum calculation and ab initio molecular dynamic simulation shows that 2D Fe2Si crystal has a high thermodynamic stability and its 2D lattice can be retained at the temperature up to 1200 K. Monte Carlo simulations based on the Ising model predict a Curie temperature over 780 K in 2D Fe2Si crystal, which can be further tuned by applying a biaxial strain. Moreover, 2D structure and strong in-plane Fe-Fe interaction endow Fe2Si nanosheet sizable magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy with the magnitude of at least two orders larger than those of Fe, Co and Ni bulks. These novel magnetic properties render the 2D Fe2Si crystal a very promising material for developing practical spintronic nanodevices.

High-temperature ferromagnetism and ferroelasticity in ultraflexible atomically thin square-shaped lattices

Abstract:The coexistence of high-temperature intrinsic ferromagnetic ordering, large magnetic anisotropy, along with novel mechanical properties such as ferroelasticity and flexibility, in experimental feasible two-dimensional (2D) crystals is greatly appealing for nanoscale spintronics. However, the progress in identifying such materials is limited. Here, by first-principles calculations, we report the findings of an extraordinary combination of the above qualities for the first time in a new 2D exfoliated FeSi nanosheet in the P4/nmm space group. Due to the strong anion-mediated superexchange interaction, the monolayer FeSi (ML-FeSi) exhibits a Curie temperature Tc as high as 830 K, surpassing the current experimental record (344 K for ML-Cr3Te4). Furthermore, including FeSi, such isostructural lattices all demonstrate exceptional softness, as evidenced by their ultra-low in-plane stiffness. Remarkably, the transition metal atom and square-shaped crystal form work together to give this family of ML materials unique properties that can transition from Ising-like 2D ferromagnets in FeSi, MnP, MnAs, CrP, FeI, and VAs to 2D-XY ones in CrAs, VP, and multiferroic MnGe and TiTe. Overall, our work highlights such 2D lattices as promising candidates in emerging multifunctional device applications and nontrivial topological spintronics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials with an intrinsic semiconductivity, a high critical temperature, and a sizable magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) have attracted extensive attention because they show the promise for high-performance spintronic nanodevices. Here, we have identified a new FeCN 2 monolayer with a unique zigzag Fe chain through first-principles swarm structural search calculations. It is an AFM semiconductor with a direct band gap of 2.04 eV, a Néel temperature ( T N ) of 176 K, and a large in-plane MAE of 0.50 meV/Fe atom. More interestingly, the intrinsic antiferromagnetism, contributed by the strong magnetic coupling of neighbouring Fe ions, can be maintained under the external biaxial strains. Large cohesive energy and high dynamical stability are in favor of the application. Therefore, these fascinating properties of the FeCN 2 monolayer make it a promising nanoscale spintronic material.

Room temperature ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism in two-dimensional iron arsenides.

Abstract:The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials with high critical temperature and intrinsic magnetic properties has attracted significant research interest. By using swarm-intelligence structure search and first-principles calculations, we predict three 2D iron arsenide monolayers (denoted as FeAs-I, II and III) with good energetic and dynamical stabilities. We find that FeAs-I and II are ferromagnets, while FeAs-III is an antiferromagnet. FeAs-I and III have sizable magnetic anisotropy comparable to the magnetic recording materials such as the FeCo alloy. Importantly, we show that FeAs-I and III have critical temperatures of 645 K and 350 K, respectively, which are above room temperature. In addition, FeAs-I and II are metallic, while FeAs-III is semiconducting with a gap comparable to Si. For FeAs-III, there exist two pairs of 2D antiferromagnetic Dirac points below the Fermi level, and it displays a giant magneto band-structure effect. The superior magnetic and electronic properties of the FeAs monolayers make them promising candidates for spintronics applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional magnetic materials have demonstrated favorable properties (e.g., large spin polarization and net magnetization) for the development of next-generation spintronic devices. The discovery of such materials and insight into their magnetic coupling mechanism has become a research focus. Here, on the basis of first-principles structural search calculations, we have identified a fresh FeCN monolayer consisting of edge-sharing Fe triangle sublattices and FeC3N2 rings, which integrates antiferromagnetism, semiconductivity, and planarity. Interestingly, it possesses a large magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of 614 μeV per Fe atom, a narrow band gap (Eg) of 0.47 eV, a large magnetic moment of 3.15 μB, and a proper Néel temperature (TN) of 97 K. The direct exchange between the nearest-neighbor Fe atoms in the triangle sublattice is mainly responsible for the AFM ordering. Its high structural stability, stemming from the collective contribution of covalent C-C and C-N bonds, ionic Fe-N bonds, and metallic Fe-Fe bonds, provides a strong feasibility for experimental synthesis.

Abstract:The scarcity of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic nanostructures has hindered their applications in spintronics, which is attributed to that most magnetic materials exhibit non-van der Waals (nvdWs) structures and it is hard to reduce their thickness to 2D nanostructures. Thus it is necessary to develop a promising strategy for free-standing 2D magnetic nvdWs nanostructures. We have achieved free-standing 2D nvdWs hexagonal FeSe with a thickness of 2.9 nm by the reaction between the oleylamine-Se complex and Fe2+ with the assistance of Cl-, where the synergetic effects of Cl- and -NH2 lead to anisotropic growth. Inspiringly, the 2D hexagonal FeSe exhibits intrinsic antiferromagnetic order rooted in Fe2+ and semiconducting nature. In addition, the temperature variation would result in the chemical environment changes of Fe2+, responsible for the temperature-dependent magnetic transitions. This work promotes the potential applications of 2D hexagonal FeSe and the preparation of other 2D nvdWs materials.
Antifferomagnetic FeSe Monolayer on SiTiO_3: the Charge Doping and Electric Field Effects

Abstract:We present theoretically the electronic structure of antiferromagnetic (AFM) FeSe monolayer on TiO_2 terminated SrTiO_3(001) surface. It is revealed that the striking disappearance of the Fermi surface around the Brillouin zone (BZ) center can be well explained by the antiferromatnetic (AFM) phase. We show that the system has a considerable charge transfer from SrTiO_3(001) substrate to FeSe monolayer, and so has a self-constructed electric field. The FeSe monolayer band structure near the BZ center is sensitive to charge doping, and the spin-resolved energy bands at BZ corner are distorted to be flattened by the perpendicular electric field. We propose a tight-binding model Hamiltonian to take these key factors into account. We also show that this composite structure is an ideal electron-hole bilayer system, with electrons and holes respectively formed in FeSe monolayer and TiO_2 surface layer.
Disordered 2D ferromagnetism at the surface of FeSi

Abstract:FeSi is a curious example of a $d$-electron system that manifests many of the same phenomena associated with $f$-electron Kondo insulators, including conducting surface states with potentially non-trivial topology. Here we investigate the magnetization and magnetotransport of these surface states and how a 2D ferromagnetic state at the surface of FeSi influences the surface conductivity. We confirm the 2D ferromagnetism via a systematic study of magnetization on groups of filtered fragments with increasing surface area-to-volume ratios, identifying characteristic temperatures and magnetic fields associated with the ordered state. The paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition appears broadened, suggesting disorder, which allows spin fluctuations to manifest up to at least 9 T at 2 K. This highlights the need to understand the relation between the disorder of the 2D ferromagnetism and the surface conductivity in FeSi.

Abstract:Ferromagnetism and half-metallicity are two vital properties of a material for realizing its potential in spintronics applications. However, none of the two-dimensional (2D) pristine metal carbide sheets synthesized experimentally exhibits half-metallicity with ferromagnetic coupling. Here, a ferromagnetic and half-metallic FeC2 sheet containing isolated C-2 dimers rather than individual carbon atoms is predicted to be such a material. Based on state-of-the-art theoretical calculations, we show that the FeC2 sheet is dynamically, thermally, and mechanically stable and can be chemically exfoliated from the bulk phase of layered ThFeC2. Due to its unique atomic configuration, the FeC2 sheet exhibits ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature of 245 K. This is in contrast to its bulk counterpart, ThFeC2, which is paramagnetic. We also find that, unlike the metallic metal carbide sheets, the FeC2 sheet is half-metallic with semiconducting spin-up and metallic spin down channels. Moreover, half-metallicity can remain until an equi-biaxial strain of 10%. In addition, we provide the Raman and infrared spectra which can be used to identify this new 2D structure experimentally in the future.
Predicting Layered Itinerant Magnetic Fe3SiSe2 with Spontaneous Valley Polarization

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations are performed to systematically investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of few-layer and bulk Fe3SiSe2 (FSS). We predict that the bulk FSS has a metallic ground state and a layered structure displaying intralayer ferromagnetic ordering and interlayer antiferromagnetic ordering. The itinerant magnetism in the FSS was determined by the Stoner criterion. Predictions of the absence of unstable phonon modes and a moderate cleavage energy of only 28.3 meV/Å2 suggest the possibility of stabilizing FSS in a monolayer form. The calculated spin–orbit coupling facilitates not only a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, around 500 μeV/Fe, but also spontaneous valley polarization in odd-numbered layer systems. These systems have net magnetic moments as the magnetic moments of AFM-ordered layers are not fully compensated in the odd-numbered layer case and are predicted to show 2D metallic behaviors. The magnitude of the valley polarization in odd-numbered layered systems decreases from 18 meV with layer number but is absent in even-layered structures, thus showing an odd–even oscillation effect. Experimental realization of this bidimensional metallic magnet is, therefore, expected to widen the arena of two-dimensional materials that show exotic phenomena.

Abstract:Magnetic two-dimensional materials have attracted considerable attention for their significant potential application in spintronics. In this study, we present a high-quality Fe-doped SnS2 monolayer exfoliated using a micromechanical cleavage method. Fe atoms were doped at the Sn atom sites, and the Fe contents are ∼2.1%, 1.5%, and 1.1%. The field-effect transistors based on the Fe0.021Sn0.979S2 monolayer show n-type behavior and exhibit high optoelectronic performance. Magnetic measurements show that pure SnS2 is diamagnetic, whereas Fe0.021Sn0.979S2 exhibits ferromagnetic behavior with a perpendicular anisotropy at 2 K and a Curie temperature of ~31 K. Density functional theory calculations show that long-range ferromagnetic ordering in the Fe-doped SnS2 monolayer is energetically stable, and the estimated Curie temperature agrees well with the results of our experiment. The results suggest that Fe-doped SnS2 has significant potential in future nanoelectronic, magnetic, and optoelectronic applications.
