Abstract:A novel nitrogen removal strategy, the combined photoelectrocatalytic oxidation and autotrophic biofilm denitrification, was developed to achieve simultaneous NH4+-N oxidation and NO3−-N reduction in a single reactor. AgI/TiO2-NTs and autotrophic denitrifying biofilm were used as anode and cathode, respectively. NH4+-N oxidation efficiency was enhanced by 3 times after the introduction of visible light. Moreover, NO3−-N and NO2−-N generated in the process of NH4+-N oxidation could be further removed by biocathode. Applied voltage and pH have significant effects on nitrogen removal. The NO3−-N and NH4+-N removal efficiencies gradually increased from 27.2% to 74.3% and 60.0% to 83.1%, respectively, when the voltage increased from 1.0V to 3.0V. Neutral or slightly alkaline condition was favorable on account of the autotrophic denitrifying biofilm. The optimum TN (TNNH4+-N+NO3−-N+NO2−-N) removal efficiency was up to 89.6% at pH 8 with 3.0V voltage.
Denitrification of Drinking Water by A Combined Process of Heterotrophication and Electrochemical Autotrophication

Abstract:A combined two-step process of heterotrophic and electrochemical autotrophic denitrification was developed for the treatment of nitrate-contained drinking water. The water was first treated with heterotrophic biological denitrification and was further purified with electrochemical autotrophic denitrification. The two steps were carried out in a heterotrophication-electrochemical autotrophication combined reactor (HEAR). The lower section performed as the heterotrophic biological reactor and the upper section acted as the electrochemical autotrophic reactor. The bioreactor was a packed bed of anthracite particles, and the water flow was directed in an upward continuous mode. The total nitrate and nitrite concentration, and residual methanol in the effluent were monitored to evaluate the performance of the reactor. The reactor was operated for one year with a feed concentration of 40 mg NO3--N/l. There was no nitrite or residual methanol accumulation in the effluent when the feed C: N ratios (m/m) varied from 2.2 to 2.9. However, slightly excessive methanol dosage could increase the denitrifying capacity of the reactor. The maximum denitrification load of the reactor at 24degreesC was 10.68 g NO3-/m(3) h (47 g NO3-) at C : N = 2.5.

Abstract:A novel combined system established for nitrate removal from aqueous solution consisted of two parts: sulfur autotrophic denitrification and bio-electrochemical denitrification based on proton-exchange membrane electrodialysis (PEMED). The system was operated at various hydraulic retention times (HRT) and current intensities. Its optimum operation condition was also determined. The combined process had pH adjustment thus generating less nitrite than PEMED process. The denitrification rate of sulfur autotrophic part was dependent on HRT, while shorter HRT could reduce the sulfate generated by the sulfur autotrophic process. The denitrification rate of PEMED process depended on the applied current. For 32 +/- 1 mg-N/L nitrate in influent, the optimum operation parameters of combined process were: HRT 2 h; applied current 350 mA. The combined reactor could achieve 95.8% nitrate removal without nitrite accumulation, the pH of effluent kept neutral and the sulfate of effluent was 202.1 mg/L, lower than the drinking water standard in China. Abstract:A combined bioelectrochemical and sulfur autotrophic denitrification system (CBSAD) was evaluated to treat a groundwater with nitrate contamination (20.9–22.0mgNO3--N/L). The reactor was operated continuously for several months with groundwater to maximize treatment efficiency under different hydraulic retention times (HRT) and electric currents. The denitrification rate of sulfur autotrophic part followed a half-order kinetics model. Moreover, the removal efficiency of bioelectrochemical part depended on the electric current. The reactor could be operated efficiently at the HRT ranged from 4.2 to 2.1h (corresponding nitrogen volume-loading rates varied from 0.12 to 0.24kgN/m3d; and optimum current ranged from 30 to 1000mA), and the NO3--N removal rate ranged from 95% to 100% without NO3--N accumulation. The pH of effluent was satisfactorily adjusted by bioelectrochemical part, and the sulfate concentration of effluent was lower than 250mg /L, meeting the drinking water standard of China EPA.

Abstract:A combined two-step process of heterotrophic denitrification in a fluidized reactor and sulfur autotrophic denitrification processes (CHSAD) was developed for the removal of nitrate in drinking water. In this process, the advantage of high efficiency of heterotrophic denitrification with non-excessive methanol and the advantage of non-pollution of sulfur autotriphic denitrification were integrated in this CHSAD process. And, this CHSAD process had the capacity of pH balance and could control the concentration of SO42− in effluent by adjusting the operation condition. When the influent nitrate was 30mgNO3−–N/L, the reactor could be operated efficiently at the hydraulic retention time (HRT) ranging from 20 to 40min with C:N ratio (mg CH3OH:mg NO3−–N) of 2.0 (methanol as carbon source). The nitrate removal was nearly 100% and there was no accumulated nitrite or residual methanol in the effluent. The effluent pH was about 7.5 and the sulfate concentration was lower than 130mg/L. The maximum volume-loading rate of the reactor was 2.16kgNO3−–N/(m3d). The biomass and scanning electron microscopy graphs of biofilm were also analyzed.

Abstract:A combined process with solid-phase denitrification and electrochemical hydrogen autotrophic denitrification was studied.This process could be easily operated and had high nitrate removal efficiency.The results showed that,when the current was 40 mA and the HRT was 3.9 h,the NO-3-N concentration in the effluent was decreased from 70 mg·L-1 to 1.2 mg·L-1.The NO-3-N removal efficiency was up to 98.3%,and the TN removal efficiency was 95.6%.No accumulation of NO-2-N in the reactor was found,and the pH of the effluent was stable between 7.0 and 8.1.

Abstract:Contamination of wastewater with organic-limited nitrates has become an urgent problem in wastewater treatment. The cooperating heterotrophic with sulfur autotrophic denitrification is an alternative process and the efficiency has been assessed in many studies treating simulated wastewater under different operating conditions. However, due to the complex and diverse nature of actual wastewater, more studies treating actual wastewater are still needed to evaluate the feasibility of collaborative denitrification. In this study, lab-scale experiments were performed with actual nitrate polluted water of two different concentrations, with glucose and sodium thiosulfate introduced as mixed electron donors in the coupling sulfur-based autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification. Results showed that the optimum denitrification performance was exhibited when the influent substrate mass ratio of C/N/S was 1.3/1/1.9, with a maximum denitrification rate of 3.52 kg NO3−-N/(m3 day) and nitrate removal efficiency of 93% in the coupled systems. Illumina high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that autotrophic, facultative, and heterotrophic bacteria jointly contributed to high nitrogen removal efficiency. The autotrophic denitrification maintained as the predominant process, while the second most prevalent denitrification process gradually changed from heterotrophic to facultative with the increase of influent concentration at optimum C/N/S ratio conditions. Furthermore, the initiation of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) was very pivotal in promoting the entire denitrification process. These results suggested that sulfur-based autotrophic coupled with heterotrophic denitrifying process is an alternative and promising method to treat nitrate containing wastewater.

Abstract:Sulfur-based mixotrophic denitrification has significant potential as a promising denitrification technology for treating low ratio of carbon-to‑nitrogen (C/N) wastewater. This paper provided an in-depth and comprehensive overview of the sulfur-based mixotrophic denitrification process and discussed the underlying mechanisms and functional microorganisms. Possible electron transfer pathways involved in the sulfur-based mixotrophic denitrification process are also analyzed in detail. This review focused on the various sulfur-based electron donors used in the sulfur-based mixotrophic denitrification process, including S0, S2−, S2O32−, and pyrite (FeS2), and their performances when combined with various carbon sources (such as methanol, ethanol, glucose, and woodchips) were also explored. The analysis of the contribution proportion between autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification suggested an appropriate C/N ratio can emphasize the dominance of autotrophs, thus exerting synergistic effects and reducing the consumption of carbon sources. Additionally, three strategies, including developing new composites, new bioreactors, and new sulfur sources, were proposed to improve the performance and stability of the sulfur-based mixotrophic denitrification process. Finally, the applications (such as secondary effluent, groundwater, and agricultural/urban storm water runoff), challenges, and perspectives of the sulfur-based mixotrophic denitrification were highlighted. This review provided an in-depth insight into the coupling mechanism of sulfur-based autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification and guidance for the future implementation of the sulfur-based mixotrophic denitrification process.

Abstract:Sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SDAD) is feasible for the treatment of low-C/N-ratio and sulfur-laden wastewaters. The nitrite accumulated in SDAD will affect the performance and stability of the system but can be a potential electron acceptor. Thus, single- and multiple-electron acceptor-mediated SDAD systems were investigated. Batch assays revealed that nitrite and nitrate were the preferential options in the SDAD system with single and multiple electron acceptors, respectively. Synchronous nitrogen and sulfur removal was successfully achieved in continuous flow experiments with multiple electron acceptors, and the system could adapt well to high concentrations of sulfide, nitrate and nitrite (i.e., 720, 108 and 64.8 mg L-1, respectively), with the predominant genera shifting from Thiobacillus (48.88%) at the initial stage to unclassified_p_Firmicute (34.24%) and Syner-01 (12.31%) at the last stage. This work provides a fundamental basis for applying and regulating SDAD with multiple electron acceptors for the remediation of nitrogen- and sulfide- laden wastewaters.

Abstract:Thiobacillus denitrificans, as a kind of autotrophic facultative bacteria, could oxidize sulfide into elemental sulfurwhen nitrate was adopted as its electron accepter and carbon dioxide as its carbon resource under anaerobic environment.Through this way, nitrate was converted into nitrogen. In addition, Thiobacillus denitrificans has a wide ecological-amplitudeand could accumulate sulfur extracellularly. Based on these special physiological characteristics, an innovative process ofsimultaneous de-sulfide and de-nitrification was developed by authors. Three strains of Thiobacillus denitrificans wereemployed as sulfur-producers in the treatment of wastewater containing sulfide and nitrate in this study. The stoichiometricequations of simultaneous de-sulfide and de-nitrification by Thiobacillus denitrificans was presented. The key factor affectingthis process was investigated through batch tests. The experimental results indicated that the sulfide concentration and theratio of sulfide to nitrate (S2-/ NO3- ratio) in the influent are the key factors. Their suitable level could be controlled at 5/3 and 300mg/L respectively in order to achieve 94% of sulfur conversion rate. If S2-/ NO3- ratio was not over 5/3, sulfurconversion rate will increase with the decrease of S2-/ NO3- ratio.

Abstract:An anaerobic expanding-bed reactor was adopted to investigate the feasibility of an innovative integrated process of simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification (SDD) for high strength wastewater. In the reactor, heterotrophic bacteria (including sulfate reducing bacterium and denitrifying bacteria) and autotrophic bacteria (including Thiobacillus denitrificans) cooperated together by incubating and enriching functional bacteria on different carriers in the anaerobic activated sludge. Synthetic wastewater with high concentrations of sulfate and nitrate was employed. The experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of sulfate and nitrate was above 85%, elemental sulfur was observed while nitrate was absent in effluent. The balance of sulfur, nitrogen and electron was discussed respectively, which indicated that the integrated SDD process could be actualized. These results might provide a guidance to further investigate the key factors affecting the integrated SDD process and to improve the efficiency of desulfurization and denitrification in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of a thiosulfate-driven autotrophic denitrification for nitrate-N removal from micro-polluted surface water. The aim was to study the effects of [Formula: see text] ratio (S/N molar ratio) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the autotrophic denitrification performance. Besides, utilization efficiencies of [Formula: see text] along the biofilter and the restart-up of the bioreactor were also investigated. Autotrophic denitrification using thiosulfate as an electron donor for treating micro-polluted surface water without the addition of external alkalinity proved to be feasible and the biofilter could be readied in two weeks. Average nitrate-N removal efficiencies at HRTs of 0.5, 1 and 2 h were 78.7%, 87.8% and 97.4%, respectively, and corresponding removal rates were 186.24, 103.92 and 58.56 g [Formula: see text], respectively. When water temperature was in the range of 8-12°C and HRT was 1 h, average nitrate-N removal efficiencies of 41.9%, 97.1% and 97.0%, nitrite accumulation concentrations of 1.45, 0.46 and 0.22 mg/L and thiosulfate utilization efficiencies of 100%, 98.8% and 92.1% were obtained at S/N ratios of 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5, respectively. Besides, the autotrophic denitrification rate in the filtration media layer was the highest along the biofilter at an S/N ratio of 1.5. Finally, after a one-month period of starvation, the biofilter could be restarted successfully in three weeks without inoculation of seed sludge.

Abstract:A packed bed electrochemical biological reactor was studied and utilized for denitrification of drinking water. Using active carbon as the filter, graphite plate as anode, and active carbon fibre as cathodes, an optimum reductive condition in the reactor was established for denitrification of nitrate. The test results proved that both nitrate and nitrite in the water could be removed effectively. At the case of 40 mL/h inflow, 40 mg/L of NO3-N, and 14 mA of current density, a 100% denitrification rate was achieved and no nitrite was detected. Because there is no any additional pollution in the treating process, this method is suggested to be a safety process for drinking water denitrification.

Abstract:A newly combined bioelectrochemical and sulfur autotrophic denitrification system was developed and steadily operated to treat nitrate polluted water at 10°C for 270 d. The parameters hydraulic retention time (HRT) and current were continuously adjusted to achieve better nitrate removal efficiency. Results demonstrated that the sulfur autotrophic denitrification part (S-part) efficiency was effectively improved by adjusting the parameter HRT, while current was the key control parameter for the electrochemical part (E-part) at low temperatures in this CBSAD reactor. This CBSAD system had the ability to maintain pH balance, and the effluent concentration could be effectively controlled at cold temperatures in this combined autotrophic system.

Abstract:Elemental sulfur (S 0 )-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD) has gained intensive attention in the treatment of secondary effluent for its low cost, high efficiency, and good stability. However, in practice, the supplementary addition of limestone is necessary to balance the alkalinity consumption during SAD operation, which increases water hardness and reduces the effective reaction volume. In this study, a coupled sulfur and electrode-driven autotrophic denitrification (SEAD) process was proposed with superior nitrate removal performance, less accumulation of sulfate, and self-balance of acidity-alkalinity capacity by regulating the applied voltage. The dual-channel electron supply from S 0 and electrodes made the nitrate removal rate constant k in the SEAD process 3.7-5.1 and 1.4-3.5 times higher than that of the single electrode- and sulfur-driven systems, respectively. The S° contributed to 75.3%-83.1% of nitrate removal and the sulfate yield during SEAD (5.67-6.26 mg SO 4 2− /mg NO 3 − -N) was decreased by 17%-25% compared with SAD. The S 0 particle and electrode both as active bio-carriers constructed collaborative denitrification communities and functional genes. Pseudomonas, Ralstonia and Brevundimonas were the dominant denitrifying genera in S 0 particle biofilm, while Pseudomonas, Chryseobacterium, Pantoea and Comamonas became dominant denitrifying genera in the cathode biofilm. The narG/Z/H/Y/I/V, nxrA/B, napA/B, nirS/K, norB/C and nosZ were potential functional genes for efficient nitrate reduction during the SEAD process. Metagenomic sequencing indicated that S 0 as an electron donor has greater potential for complete denitrification than the electrode. These findings revealed the potential of SEAD for acting as a highly efficient post denitrification process.

Abstract:To date, there is a lack of systematic investigation on the elemental sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SDAD) process for removing nitrate (NO 3 − -N) from mariculture wastewater deficient in organic carbon sources. Therefore, a packed-bed reactor was established and continuously operated for 230 days to investigate the operation performance, kinetic characteristics and microbial community of SDAD biofilm process. Results indicate that the NO 3 − -N removal efficiencies and rates varied with the operational conditions including HRT (1–4 h), influent concentrations of NO 3 − -N (25–100 mg L −1 ) and DO (0.2–7.0 mg L −1 ), and temperature (10 o C–30 °C), in the ranges of 51.4%–98.6% and 0.054–0.546 g L −1 d −1 , respectively. Limestone could partially neutralize the produced acidity. Small portions of NO 3 − -N were converted to nitrite (<4.5%) and ammonia (<2.8%) in the reactor. Operational conditions also influenced the production of acidity, nitrite and ammonia as well as sulfate. Shortening HRT and increasing influent NO 3 − -N concentration turned the optimal fitting model depicting the NO 3 − -N removal along the reactor from half-order to zero-order. Furthermore, the NO 3 − -N removal was accelerated by a higher temperature and influent NO 3 − -N concentration and a lower HRT and influent DO concentration. Microbial richness, evenness and diversity gradually decreased during the autotrophic denitrifier enrichment cultivation and the reactor start-up and operation. Sulfurimonas constituted the predominate genus and the primary functional bacteria in the reactor. This study highlights the SDAD as a promising way to control the coastal eutrophication associated with mariculture wastewater discharge.

Abstract:Excess nitrate presented in natural water body and drinking water has been a challenge for maintaining safe ecosystem and human health. Sulfur autotrophic denitrification is proved a feasible technology to remove nitrate from water environment. However, comparatively low rate of sulfur autotrophic denitrification needs to be addressed before wide application of this technology, which is a result of the low solubility of elemental sulfur. Therefore, this study employed bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a supplementary material to modify the elemental sulfur for improved sulfur autotrophic denitrification rate. Artificial biofilm of Thiobacillus denitrificans was prepared and employed in experiments. By testing different amount of BSA applied in both elemental sulfur and the biofilm, including 1 %, 2 % and 4 % mass ratios, it was found that larger employment of BSA had significant effect in increasing the denitrification rate. Particularly when 4 % BSA was added into elemental sulfur, the highest denitrification rate reached 26.8 mg-N/(L·d), 3.7 times of the control group. Meanwhile, the largest reaction rate constant was achieved, 4.13 mg0.5/(L0.5·d), 2.78 times of the control group. This effect was attributed to promoted conversion of elemental sulfur to polysulfide that was easily utilized by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. A long-term operation (14 days) of packed bed reactor filled with sulfur particles and 1 % BSA delivered a much faster start-up than the control and outperformed it with better denitrification performance all-through the experiment. This result evidenced again that BSA could make a highly effective supplement in sulfur autotrophic denitrification.

Abstract:In this study, a vertical submerged biofilm reactor was applied to investigate autotrophic partial nitrification/denitrification and simultaneous sulfide removal by using synthetic wastewater. The appropriate influent ratios of ammonia and sulfide needed to achieve partial autotrophic nitrification and denitrification were evaluated with influent ammonium nitrogen ranging from 54.6 to 129.8 mg L−1 and sulfide concentrations ranging from 52.7 to 412.4 mg S L−1. The results demonstrated that the working parameter was more stable when the sulfur/nitrogen ratio was set at 3:2, which yielded the maximum sulfur conversion. Batch experiments with different phosphate concentrations proved that a suitable phosphate buffer solution to control pH values could improve synchronous desulfurization denitrification process performance.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Contamination of nitrate in ground and surface water has become an ever-increasing and serious environmental problem. Biological methods hold the promise of converting nitrate into harmless nitrogen. A novel denitrification system which combines proton-exchange membrane electrodialysis with simultaneous bio-electrochemical autotrophic denitrification has been developed. The proton-exchange membrane was used to transfer current and to exclude oxygen or other oxidative chemicals generated in the anode reaction. The H-2 generated by the cathode was utilized by autotrophic denitrifying microorganisms in the cathode cell to reduce nitrate. In this study, the transport of H+, a denitrification kinetics model and factors influencing the denitrification rate were explored in batch mode.RESULTS: The addition of 0.03 mol L-1 H2SO4 into the anode cell enhanced proton transport and maintained the pH of the cathode cell in an appropriate range for biological denitrification. The denitrification rate was affected by applied current and biomass. Under adequate current conditions, the kinetics of the denitrification process followed a zero-order kinetics model; the average denitrification rate for unit biomass was calculated to be 9.36 mg NO3--N VSS g(-1) h(-1).CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that the system is suitable for denitrification.
