Abstract:<span>Economic, cultural, social, and political life is being increasingly shaped by digital platforms including social networking sites (Facebook), streaming services (Netflix) and sharing platforms (AirBnB). While social scientists have tracked the rapid emergence of platforms and developed useful conceptualisations about what they are and how they operate, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the nature of platform competition or the experiences of users. To address these gaps, this paper focuses on the illustrative case of recorded music, where platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music, face intense competition due to similarities in price and content. Drawing on 42 semi-structured interviews, 20 app 'walk-alongs' with Spotify users and an analysis of 120 documents (industry reports, trade magazines, press releases and news articles), it demonstrates how the basis of competition has shifted from content, price and curation to the engineering of compelling experiences that harness the unique and interconnected affordances of platformisation. The paper nuances our understanding of the dynamic and contingent nature of platforms, the processes of datafication and curation underpinning their interventions in markets and everyday life, the geographies of these virtual distribution and consumption channels, and the ways in which users imagine, value, and experience music streaming platforms.</span>

Abstract:Spotify, present in more than 90 countries with millions of users, faces the challenge of implementing effective marketing strategies to address local market diversity while maintaining global cohesion. This strategy involves increasing product personalization to meet the diverse needs of consumers from various countries, as well as supporting the richness of local music culture in each market, including in countries with strong cultural nationalism such as Indonesia. This research aims to investigate the global marketing strategies implemented by Spotify, the world's leading music streaming platform, with a focus on product personalization, cultural adaptation, and collaboration and partnerships. The research methodology used in this research is a literature review with a qualitative approach and secondary data types. The literature review approach was chosen because it allows collecting information from various relevant sources to answer the research problem formulation. The type of data used is secondary data, obtained from sources such as Spotify annual reports, market research data, academic journal articles, and industry media. The data collection method is carried out by taking data from the library, reading, taking notes and processing research materials. The results of the study conclude that Spotify has succeeded in implementing an effective global marketing strategy to expand its reach and influence in the competitive and diverse music market. With a focus on product personalization, and collaborative partnerships, Spotify has demonstrated significant innovation in facing the challenges of globalization.

Abstract:Purpose- This study aims to investigate entertainment marketing activities in the digital entertainment era. In doing so, this study targets to explore digital entertainment marketing activities and strategies. Methodology- The study employs a qualitative method designed as an explorative study. Case study is conducted as a research method. A purposive sampling method is performed. Purposive sampling methods are used to discover and explain facts and events. Typical case sampling which is one of the purposive samplin is conducted. In this method the most typical cases are chosen among a series of cases where a new application or innovation is wanted to be introduced by the researcher. Data is collected by the semi-structured interview technique with the chief marketing officer of a dıgital music platform application. Findings- Digitalisation is the most succesful tool of information and communication technology. Findings reveal that digital consumer engagement is one of the essential methods to keep consumers' dynamism in the digital entertainment era, because of the consumers’ tastes and needs change fastly. Also, personalized content enable consumers to have a great experience. So, digital consumer participation and digital entertainment marketing related with the conseumer satisfaction. On the other hand, due to its' nature, convergence has a tremendous impact on digital entertainment marketing. It is also essential to decide what content will be marketed and who will be the target audience. Moreover, because the Internet removes the limits, globalization of the digital entertainment marketing strategies bring remarkable differentiation. Conclusion- Digital entertainment businesses must be dynamic to keep consumers on the conduit due to the short life cycle of the content. Digital marketing channels are quite effective channels to convey the marketing message. Social media usage is the one of the most effective methods for promotion activities. Social media utilization and using influencers as marketing campaigns significantly sustain the business and profitability. Abstract:Music is the background of life, representing an international language that connects different cultures. It is also significant with respect to economies, markets, and businesses. The literature in the music field has identified several issues related to the role of digitalization in the revolution of music, the distribution of music products, the management and organization of music events, music marketing strategies, and the position of musicians as entrepreneurs. This paper comprises a systematic literature review of the most recent articles discussing the numerous connections between music, business, and management (2017–2022). Through a rigorous protocol, this research discusses the effects of the digital revolution on the music industry, with particular reference to the persisting oligopoly of major labels and the new business models that integrate music streaming and social networks. The findings show the renaissance and relevance of live music events, the fundamental role of segmentation strategies for managing festivals, and the limited presence of sustainability as a priority during festivals and events management. Furthermore, the literature highlights the relevance of discussions concerning musicians' identity, especially in light of the complex relationship between the bohemian and the entrepreneurial nature of their profession. This is followed by numerous reflections on future research opportunities, recommending theoretical and empirical in-depth studies of music industry competition, futuristic management philosophies and business models, and the roles of technology, sustainability, and financial elements in fostering artists' success in the digital era. Finally, the paper discusses business models and strategies for musicians, festivals management, stores, and sustainability.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, the Internet and digital technologies have radically transformed the way in which music is distributed, sold, licensed, and consumed. Against this context, one of the most prominent industry players, Spotify, has received increasing attention from scholars. Despite its multifaceted role as a cultural intermediary and a gatekeeper, this study primarily frames Spotify as a DSP (Digital Service Provider). The purpose is to explore the dynamics of its business model innovation from a value perspective. Building on a systematic literature review, therefore, it argues that Spotify constructs its value streams mainly around the personalized curation of users’ listening experiences. Specific attention is paid to its freemium subscription model and its algorithmically filtered playlist called "Discover Weekly." Finally, the findings demonstrate that Spotify's business model innovation is an iterative, cumulative and incremental process through which its focus on the personalization strategies could be conceived as a core competency.

Abstract:With the rise of Industry 4.0, everything has become more digitalized. Many companies have started implementing technologies in their digital marketing activities to enhance productivity. Spotify is one of the companies that used AI in their digital marketing campaign called “Spotify Wrapped” from 2016 until today. With the rise of the digital campaign, many consumers were interested in the campaign and the application. There are 3 topics that will be discussed related to how Spotify Wrapped does its marketing, the impact of the campaign on user engagement, and the way Spotify Wrapped could succeed. The data will be gathered in quantitative ways through a survey which will become the primary data. A literature study from a related journal has also been conducted to gain secondary data. The final outcome from this study has found that users participate actively and passively in this marketing strategy. In order to understand the link between dependent and independent factors and the usage of AI in Spotify Wrapped and how it impacts users' engagement with the application, the analyzed data were also utilized to support the hypotheses that were developed. It also demonstrates that one of the factors influencing users' decisions to continue using the Spotify app is Spotify Wrapped. The research is constrained by the fact that it can only include 100 Indonesian respondents who have used or are presently using the Spotify app. This study looks at consumer behavior, particularly how consumers respond to personalized content and other digital marketing tools. This report also examines and offers advice on how a company might use artificial intelligence to grow its business.

Abstract:With the rise of short video platforms and the onset of the post-copyright era, the digital music industry is undergoing significant transformations. The competition within the industry has intensified, while user growth and conversion to paying users have encountered obstacles. As a leader in China's digital music industry, it is worth exploring how to overcome these challenges and identify new areas for growth. This paper employs literature research, case analysis, data analysis, and other research methods. Firstly, it analyzes NetEase Cloud Music's profit model based on subscription payments, advertising revenue, and sales of virtual items outlined in its prospectus. Secondly, it utilizes authoritative industry research reports to analyze NetEase Cloud Music's user positioning, consumer profile, and partnerships, simultaneously examining their marketing strategy through a case study involving Hangzhou Metro's collaboration with NetEase Cloud Music, known as "Reviews Train." By analyzing structural changes in financial data disclosed in annual performance announcements, this paper examines the impact of marketing strategies on revenue growth, cost control measures, and profitability, as well as explores how adopting diversified market strategies can enhance risk management capabilities and improve financial stability. Finally, this paper presents corresponding countermeasures and suggestions based on identified issues from previous analyses along with future prospects.

Abstract:This study explores the value of media innovation strategies for driving business success within the Iranian e-market of music downloads. It argues that the context of music e-markets in emerging countries differs markedly from that of developed economies by highlighting the political and cultural challenges that local e-music platforms in Iran are continuously facing. As literature is scarce in this specific area, and this study is one of the first attempting to gain a comprehensive understanding, a qualitative approach has been applied, and 14 digital music industry experts were interviewed in Iran. Data were collected through semi-structured face-to-face interviews and then analyzed with a qualitative coding approach. This paper revealed that issues such as copyright challenges and governmental permission barriers are limiting the capabilities of digital music distributors to reach a sustainable competitive advantage.

Abstract:With the change in people's music consumption patterns, music streaming media enterprises have attracted more and more attention. Spotify is one of the largest music streaming media enterprises at present, and its rapid development has been attracting attention. As the market becomes increasingly competitive, Spotify's single business model is increasingly limited. Through the combination of qualitative and quantitative research, this paper concludes that the main problems of Spotify's current business model are as follows: firstly, it cannot produce content, and acquiring music playing rights only by buying the copyright of record companies not only consumes a lot of money but also has uncertainties. Second, only relying on a single advertising and subscription fees revenue model has been unable to meet the needs of enterprise management costs. Third, as the competition among music-streaming services intensifies, Spotify must be able to provide users with music that is more satisfying to their tastes. Therefore, to solve these problems in the future, Spotify can focus on creating its own record company, upgrading its algorithm, and developing its own hardware products to enrich its business model.

This report delves into product innovation strategies implemented by QQ Music, such as its copyright strategy and product features, in response to intense competition within the digital music market. Based on the key findings, this report discusses how QQ Music’s innovative strategies have contributed to reinforcing the company’s dominance within China’s music streaming industry. A thorough SWOT analysis also serves as a strategic compass, highlighting the ways in which QQ Music strategically builds on its innate strengths and aggressively addresses its shortcomings. With a forward-looking perspective, this report provides insights into the future trajectory of QQ Music. The aim is to evolve strategies in response to changing copyright policies and to increase market competition. This research demonstrates QQ Music’s current product competitiveness and serves as a strategic roadmap for the platform’s future endeavors. Resource Integration, Value Co-Creation, and Service-dominant Logic in Music Marketing: The Case of the TikTok Platform

Abstract:Abstract It is a fact that the past research has explored service-dominant logic (S-D logic) and value co-creation in music marketing (Choi & Burnes 2013; Gamble & Gilmorex 2013; Gamble 2018; Saragih 2019), yet a key aspect of S-D logic, namely resource integration, is an unexplored territory and a promising phenomenon of study. A scattering of evidence demonstrates how actors, whether individuals or organisations, in the music industry are making value propositions and providing operand resources to users of platforms (Poell, Nieborg, & Van Dijck 2019), which may result in resource integration and commercial success at a quick pace and on a global scale. Using secondary data in an archival research approach (Welch 2000), this paper examines TikTok, a rapidly growing platform where users integrate short (e.g., under 15 s) clips of commercial music into user generated video content in which users dance to, lip-sync with, accept social challenges, integrate hashtags and create memes based on musical content. Further, there is a discussion on evidence about how music is being used by actors on TikTok in order to argue that (a) S-D logic (Vargo & Lusch 2016) is an insightful perspective through which one is able to understand music marketing; (b) music providers essentially make value propositions with their music that other actors, such as music consumers, can integrate into their lives through platforms like TikTok; (c) changes in technology affect such resource integration and how actors in the music industry can adapt to such change; (d) value-in-social-context (Edvardsson, Tronvoll, & Gruber 2010) is a driver of resource integration by users on the platform; and (e) this example of value created by users on TikTok is just one example of the many types of value which guide action and interaction on today’s music platforms. The discussion and analysis is concluded with several implications for research and practice.

Abstract:With the development of communication technologies like social media, consumption has fundamentally changed. This study examines the impact of the digital and social environment on consumer behavior and business practices by analyzing Starbucks successful practices in social media marketing. The study finds that Starbucks has effectively increased brand awareness and customer engagement on major social platforms such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook through high-quality content marketing, collaborations with online celebrities and active user engagement strategies. Starbucks communicates brand values through visual storytelling and builds a strong customer community with user-generated content and interactive activities. The findings suggest that companies in the retail and restaurant industries can learn from Starbucks experience to enhance emotional connections with customers and brand loyalty by maintaining transparency, building communities, collaborating with web admins, and creating visual content. This study is an important reference for industry practices, emphasizing the importance of continuous innovation in the rapidly changing social media landscape.

Abstract:Not only do music streaming platforms offer on-demand access to vast catalogues of licensed music, they are actively shaping what and how it finds us through personalisation. While existing literature has highlighted how personalisation has the potential to transform the part that music taste and consumption play in the performance of class identities and distinction, little is empirically known about its sociological consequences. Drawing on 42 semi-structured interviews with a combination of key informants and Spotify users, this article demonstrates that personalisation is undermining opportunities to achieve social distinction by taking over the labour of music curation and compressing the time needed to appreciate music for its own sake. It demonstrates that those with cultural capital at stake – in the case of this study, young, (primarily) male cultural omnivores – experience personalisation as a threat, highlighting how particular claims to social distinction are being contested in the platform age.

Abstract:Learning outcomes At the end of this study, students should analyze the re-orientation of innovation music business model strategy to create a new market using the Blue Ocean Strategy of Sun-Eater Records Company. Furthermore, they should be able to implement the business model transformation in the music industry in this digital media era based on data and technological capability. Students should analyze the digital content strategy that is relatable and relevant to music customers/users through content creation. Finally, they need to create the content strategy applicable to promotion and marketing innovatively in the music business. Case overview/synopsis This study analyzes how a Jakarta-based independent music company, Sun Eater Records, changed its strategy in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The adverse effect of the pandemic on this company included a massive drop in sales of products and revenues from tours, festivals and outdoor music performances. Music industry stakeholders were confused and frustrated because of the restriction and the implementation of the social distancing policy, as most of their business models depended on live music showcases and selling records. The protagonist of this study, Kukuh Rizal Arfianto, is the director and co-founder of Sun Eater Records. Kukuh's experience during the pandemic is used to capture the dilemma faced by the music industry players in Indonesia. This agile businessman transformed this music company by embracing digitalization. Inspired by the business models of Disney and 88 Rising (Music Management), Sun Eater Records developed various derivatives digital products. The company did not only sell music through digital content, it also developed several complementary products with music as their main theme. These innovative creations include mini-documentary, virtual concerts, compilation albums serial, digital comics, and Covid-19 Campaigns. The company is quite active in leveraging digitalization to survive in this business compared to other industry players. This study provides communication and design students opportunities to analyze how to draft an effective content strategy in the industry, in this case, the music industry. Abstract:Drawing on Mark Katz’s notion of phonographic effects—where musicians, during the advent of early recording technology, altered their style of play to be better captured by microphones—this article explores some of the “platform effects” that arise in the shift to platformization and how cultural goods and user practices are re-formatted in the process. In particular, I examine the case of the music streaming service Spotify to think through the variety of means, sonic, and otherwise, that artists, labels, and other platform stakeholders use to “optimize” music to respond to the pressures platformization creates. I develop a typology of strategies—sonic optimization, data optimization, and infrastructural optimization—to consider the creative and logistical challenges optimization poses for platforms, artists, and users alike. From creating playlist friendly songs to musical spam to artificial play counts, I use the blurry lines these cases create to explore the tensions between the competing needs of platform providers, content producers, and users. I argue that music, as data, adds pressure on musicians and producers to think and act like software developers and coders, treating their music not just as songs that need to reach listeners, but as an intermingling of sonic content and coded metadata that needs to be prepared and readied for discovery. This optimization of culture, and the pressures it creates, affects not just musicians, but content producers of all kinds (e.g., video, podcasts, apps, books, etc.) who are forced to negotiate their relationships digital culture and the platforms through which it circulates.

Abstract:Spotify is the most widely used digital music streaming service in the world, necessitating the company to consistently implement strategies for retaining its user base. Research was undertaken to investigate the influence of Product Development and Brand Resonance on Customer Retention within Spotify digital music streaming services users. The research employed a quantitative research methodology known as causal associative research, and data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) through the AMOS 26 application. A total of 150 Spotify users from various regions participated in the research. The outcomes revealed that Product Development exerted a significant influence on customer retention, suggesting that the incorporation of new features and enhancements in the product positively impacted customer retention. However, the research did not identify a significant impact of brand resonance on customer retention among Spotify users.
