Abstract:Increased intestinal permeability and gut dysbiosis are important factors in the pathophysiology of psoriasis and its associated conditions. Claudin-3 is a protein that is found in tight junctions and may be used to assess the integrity of the gut barrier. The aim of this study was to investigate serum concentration of Claudin- 3 (CLDN3) in patients with psoriasis. Exploring its possible relations with patients' demographic, clinical and laboratory findings was another objective. Fifty psoriatic patients and thirty-five age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers served as the study's control group in this case-control, hospital-based research. The amount of serum CLDN3 was determined by means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent test (ELISA). Concentration of serum CLDN3 was found to be significantly higher in patients with psoriasis. ( p = 0.002). There was no statistically significant correlation between CLDN3 and patient's clinical & laboratory variables. We demonstrated that gut permeability is dysfunctional in patients with psoriasis as indicated by reduction of serum CLDN3. Further investigations are needed to determine whether modulation of gut barrier may represent a new therapeutic approach for psoriasis.
