Abstract:In order to satisfy the polarization navigation requirements for the solar position calculation, a new method based on improved polarization angle model by using a three-channel polarization imaging system is proposed. The system consists of three microminiature TFT-LCD optical cameras equipped with three fish-eye lenses, making the structure more compact and smaller. Compared with common method based on spot detection, the proposed method has the advantages of wide field of view and high precision. First of all, the simulation based on optimization algorithm is carried out under different initial values. Then the three-channel polarization imaging system is used to verify the improved polarization angle model in three kinds of weather conditions. The experiment showed that: (i) under clear weather, the solar altitude angle and azimuth errors of the solar position calculated at different times are 0.018° and 0.028°; (ii) in building shelter environment, the solar altitude angle and azimuth errors of the solar position are 0.167° and 0.1°; (iii) in tree shelter environment, the solar altitude angle and azimuth errors of the solar position are 0.921° and 0.25°. Compared with the traditional method, the precision is enhanced at maximum 60.87% by using the proposed method.

Abstract:The bionic polarized light compass has characteristics of immunity to interference from electromagnetic fields and zero error accumulation over time, and thus has good application prospects in the autonomous navigation field under conditions of Global Positioning System rejection or failure. With the aim of addressing the problem that the polarization orientation accuracy of the bionic polarized light compass can be degraded seriously by the presence of large-area occlusions such as clouds and buildings during the actual application process, this paper proposes a highly robust orientation method under the limited effective polarization area condition based on the antisymmetry of the skylight polarization pattern. The orientation algorithm first uses the UNet convolutional neural network to perform binary segmentation of the polarized image and then separates and removes the thick cloud layer/building occlusion area from the image; Then, a new solar meridian fitting method is proposed, which makes use of the characteristic of antisymmetric distribution of polarization angle along the solar meridian in atmospheric polarization mode to fit the solar meridian, and then completes the orientation. Experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper can effectively solve the problem of polarization orientation accuracy degradation caused by harsh environments, including clouds, building occlusions, and cloudy days, and can thus improve the robustness of bionic polarized light compass orientation effectively in complex environments.

Abstract:Bionic polarization navigation has attracted extensive attention because of its strong anti-interference performance and no accumulation of errors over time. However, very few studies have fully considered the influence of adverse weather conditions such as cloudy and overcast weather, which play a key role in navigation accuracy. Therefore, we propose an adaptive ultraviolet-visible light compass method based on local atmospheric polarization characteristics applicable to various weather conditions. The proposed method transforms the heading determination problem into a multiclassification problem by using a weather recognition technique. Ultraviolet detection is used to weaken the depolarization effect of cloud particles and to obtain more accurate skylight polarization patterns. Then, on the basis of screening effective data, the sun direction vector is calculated by using the electric vector direction and is finally combined with the astronomical calendar to achieve navigation. The experimental results confirm that, compared to the other methods, the designed algorithm can suppress the interference of clouds better and adapt to complex weather conditions. Under cloudy and overcast conditions, the heading angle error is reduced to less than 2°.

Abstract:The bionic polarization navigation sensor has important research and application value in the field of modern navigation. In this study, a new algorithm for calculating the solar meridian azimuth from imaging polarization navigation sensors is proposed. By analyzing the sky polarization distribution model,there is only one line with a polarization angle of 90° in the projection plane of the sensor, and the zenith point of the sky must be on this line, with which a novel method for extracting the solar meridian in the two-dimensional projection plane is proposed. A polarization measurement model is built based on the Stokes vector method. Gaussian smoothing filtering is performed on the polarization angle image to conduct image noise suppression. The preliminary positioning of the solar meridian is solved by a dual-threshold recursive method.Then, the accuracy of the meridian detection is promoted to the sub-pixel level by interpolation to detect the exact pixel points on the solar meridian. Finally, the least-squares fitting of the precisely positioned pixels are utilized to obtain an accurate azimuth angle.An outdoor verification experiment is carried out with an imaging bionic polarization navigation sensor with a high-precision turntable system.The experimental results show that the static repeatability measurement accuracy of the algorithm is 0.0554° (σ) . The dynamic maximum error is less than 0.95° . This indicates the effectiveness and feasibility of the direction angle calculation method. The method can provide accurate and no cumulative error heading information for the movement of the carrier and provides important technical support for the field of navigation.

Abstract:In order to obtain absolute heading angle and position, lunar rover needs the support of autonomous celestial navigation system (CNS). This paper proposes a sun observation based simultaneous celestial positioning and orientation (SCPO) algorithm for the lunar rover under stationary position. Firstly we measure the sun orientation by a sun sensor and the gravity orientation by an inclinometer; secondly combine them with sun ephemeris; finally solve this problem with quaternion estimation (QUEST). By analyzing affects of the sensor's system error (such as the installation errors, bias, etc.) and random noise under stationary conditions, these two types of errors can be eliminated using joint calibration. Executing the SCPO on the moon is demonstrated through simulation. The algorithm is carried out with an experiment on the earth surface, and results demonstrate the high consistency of our simulation.

Abstract:A method to determine the direction angle for bionic navigation is proposed. In order to do it,observation models of polarized light were obtained through full-sky imaging polarimetry,and the symmetry line (solar meridian) was detected firstly; then the angle between solar meridian and the system moving direction was derived from simultaneous model,and the relative position of the sun was calculated by astronomical knowledge; finally,the direction angle for bionic navigation was evaluated by utilizing sun azimuth to revise the angle between solar meridian and the system moving direction. This study improves previous conception with the changing solar meridian as a reference direction (0°) and provides a theoretic foundation for polarized light to be applied into navigation.

Abstract:Polarization light has been used as a key navigation cue by many animals under a stable celestial polarization pattern. Inspired by animals' unrivaled navigation skill, a bionic polarization sensor is designed previously to obtain the angle of polarization and degree of polarization. However, the accuracy and stability of the sensor are restricted by multi-source errors. In order to improve the accuracy of the sensor, in this paper, the multi-source errors are analyzed and modeled. A coarse calibration is presented to reduce the effect of inconsistency and interference. In addition, the extended Kalman filter and the unscented Kalman filter are designed to estimate the multi-source error or interference and compensate for the bionic polarization sensor. Finally, simulation and indoor experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed calibration method.

Abstract:A novel design of digital sun sensor with the real panoramic view field is proposed. The optical system is composed of a filter and fisheye lens. The sun sensor has features like low power consumption,large field,and high precision which can meet the requirement of micro-satellites. According to the mechanism of the sun sensor,both the model and the entity of the sun sensor are made. After testing on the experiment platform,the results indicate that the sun sensor has a large field of 180°×360°,and in the field of 160°×360°,the precision is less than 0.18°in 3δ. The power consumption of the sensor is 150 mW. The results can meet the requirement of attitude determination system on the sun sensor.

Abstract:The polarization patterns of skylight which arise due to the scattering of sunlight in the atmosphere can be used by many insects for deriving compass information. Inspired by insects' polarized light compass, scientists have developed a new kind of navigation method. One of the key techniques in this method is the polarimetric sensor which is used to acquire direction information from skylight. In this paper, a polarization navigation sensor is proposed which imitates the working principles of the polarization vision systems of insects. We introduce the optical design and mathematical model of the sensor. In addition, a calibration method based on variable substitution and non-linear curve fitting is proposed. The results obtained from the outdoor experiments provide support for the feasibility and precision of the sensor. The sensor's signal processing can be well described using our mathematical model. A relatively high degree of accuracy in polarization measurement can be obtained without any error compensation.

Abstract:Azimuth information obtained from a polarization pattern in the sky provides many organisms like insects and birds, with the ability to navigate. The aim of this article is to investigate the azimuth method to measure the solar meridian from the pattern of the Angle of E (AOE) vector when it is partially obscured and disturbed. The model of the sky polarization pattern projected onto an imaging sensor is analyzed. The projection characteristic of the solar meridian is proved to be a straight line passing through the principal point, which is composed of pixels with the E-vector orientation 90 degrees in the AOE map. Based on the mutation feature of the gradient amplitude of E-vector orientation 90 degrees and occlusion without mutation on the solar meridian, a robust gradient amplitude and binary integration (GABI) azimuth method for a polarization imaging sensor is proposed. Then, the feasibility and robustness of this method are verified via numerical simulation and outdoor experiments, and the results show that when branches and buildings shield more than 80% of the AOE map, the azimuth measurement method remains effective. The accuracy of azimuth is 0.417 degrees (sigma). This indicates that the azimuth can be effectively measured, even in the presence of occlusion and interference.

Abstract:We developed an intelligent innovative orientation method to improve the accuracy of polarization compasses in harsh conditions: weak skylight polarization patterns resulting from unfavorable weather conditions (e.g., haze, sandstorms) or locally destroyed skylight polarization conditions caused by occlusions (e.g., buildings, trees). First, the skylight polarization status was determined with the degree of linear polarization threshold analysis method and a bionic polarization enhancement sensing model was constructed to simulate the enhanced perception mechanism identified in the Syrphidae visual neural pathway, highly efficient in dark or weakly illuminated environments. The bionic model successfully enhanced the information content extracted from weak polarization patterns. Second, polarization pixel interferences, caused by occlusions under locally destroyed skylight polarization conditions, were removed with a convolutional neural network for image segmentation and the sky area of interest was identified. Finally, the incomplete angle of polarization map derived after image segmentation was fitted using our optimized adaptive antisymmetric ring algorithm. On the basis of the strong angle-of-polarization antisymmetry along the solar meridian, information extracted from the sparse and irregular polarization pixels was analyzed to derive a high-accuracy polarization orientation solution. The whole method intelligently realizes pattern analysis and deep learning intelligent processing, efficiently rotates to manage polarization disorientation. The experimental results demonstrated the performance of the proposed method in compensating for reduced orientation accuracy under degraded polarization conditions, its robustness against perturbations, and its beneficial impact on the environmental adaptability of bionic polarization compasses.

Abstract:How to determine the absolute position of users, such as underwater autonomous vehicles, ships or other long-range vehicles, is a fascinating and challenging issue, especially in global navigation satellite system -denied environments. In this article, a bioinspired global autonomous positioning system based on polarized skylight is proposed. By comparing with the related literatures, the system is able to global positioning based on the degree of polarization pattern (DoP) pattern. To be more specific, in an attempt to use the DoP pattern for the geolocalization purposes, a bioinspired polarization compass is designed and in addition, an overall maximum DoP (MDoP) determination algorithm is presented. Moreover, on the basis of the MDoP value, the sun elevation angle can be ultimately measured by using the DoP pattern. The sun elevation angle difference algorithm is used to deduce the absolute position of users. Finally, the bioinspired global autonomous positioning system is developed and validated through experiments. The test results show that the location errors are in range of few kilometers, of which the latitude accuracy is 0.113 (1), and the longitude accuracy is 0.082 (1).

Abstract:Using polarized light sensors to obtain only two-dimensional heading information does meet actual needs in navigation. Instead, an alternative method is proposed that uses the positional information of the Sun and geomagnetic information to calculate the three-dimensional attitude of a vehicle. First, the theoretical background of the polarization mode of skylight is described, and the scheme in using the atmospheric polarization pattern to calculate the solar position is presented. Second, the traditional three-axis attitude-determination (TRIAD) algorithm that exploits the solar position vector and the geomagnetic vector to obtain the three-dimensional attitude and the optimized TRIAD algorithm are introduced. Static and turntable experiments are described that verify the accuracy of the attitude calculation. Experimental results show that when using the optimized TRIAD algorithm, the root mean square errors for the roll angle, pitch angle, and heading angle are 0.1225°, 0.668°, and 1.0234°, respectively. This means that the optimized TRIAD algorithm performs significantly better than the traditional TRIAD algorithm and demonstrates that using the solar position and the geomagnetic information to obtain the three-dimensional attitude of the vehicle is very effective.

Abstract:In the natural world, insects such as bees and sand ants can navigate with the aid of polarized skylight. Inspired by this, bio-inspired navigation systems based on polarized skylight have attracted considerable attention recently. As an important navigation parameter, attitude information is critical for control and navigation of a vehicle. In this paper, the structural characteristics of full-sky atmospheric polarization mode are studied to calculate the attitude of a vehicle relative to the observation point. The heading angle is obtained by subtraction between two angles. One is the angle between the solar meridian and the geographic north. The other is the angle between the solar meridian and the body coordinate system, which can be obtained from the polarization data detected by the sensor. And the solar position can also gain from the polarization data. Then based on the solar position and the coordinates of solar projection point, the zenith point can be determined. With the coordinates of the zenith point in the body and the reference coordinate system, the pitch angle and roll angle are solved. Simulation and practical experiments are conducted to validate the performance of the attitude calculation method. Experiment results with high accuracy show its feasibility and effectiveness.

Abstract:In instances where satellite signals are obstructed or unavailable, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) face substantial navigational challenges. In an attempt to address this challenge, a biologically inspired global polarization positioning technology has been reported. While this technology offers a possible solution for autonomous global positioning, its practical application faces challenges due to the current limitations in positioning accuracy. Therefore, this article introduces an iterative joint global polarization position strategy based on image features and polarization patterns, aiming to achieve enhanced precision in global positioning. First, a comprehensive polarization positioning model is constructed and the technical challenges are revealed. Subsequently, a solar image position solution method based on joint polarization pattern and image gray value is proposed, which can accurately calculate the solar image position in a single frame. Finally, a solar position iterative solution method is proposed and verified through outdoor experiments. Experimental results of more than 9 h in six cities show that the proposed method improves the current polarization positioning accuracy, and the root mean square error of global positioning is 25.43 km. Overall, this model and algorithm have demonstrated the ability to accurately calculate the latitude and longitude of the carrier in real-time, while exhibiting strong adaptability to diverse environmental conditions.

Abstract:In order to verify the directional mechanism of bionic polarization navigation and meet the need of further building up the high precision model of polarization navigation,a photoelectricity test system is designed for detecting angle information of the polarized light in the sky,which can measure the angle between the current system direction and the solar meridian.The mechanism of how insects use the polarized light to navigate is analysed.According to the mechanism,the hardware system is designed.The response model of the polarized-light sensor is derived.The experimental data is processed by the simultaneous model of polarization navigation.The experimental result show that the bionic polarization navigation is feasible and the design of the photo-electricity test system is effective.This has laid a foundation for the further research on polarization navigation.

Abstract:<p>The global positioning and orientation determination of marine vehicles is a challenging issue, especially in the distant sea scenarios where global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and/or magnetic compass failure. In this paper, a self-contained interactive iteration positioning and orientation coupled navigation method based on skylight polarization is proposed. To be more specific, by fusing the e-vectors and the gravity vectors, the orientation determination step is presented. Accordingly, the pitch, yaw, and roll angles can be calculated, and introduced into the global positioning step. In combination with the two steps, a coupled iteration mechanism of global positioning solution and orientation determination based on skylight polarization is constructed. According to the coupled iteration mechanism, the polarization-based geolocation and orientation can be thereby calculated under the complex scenarios where the GNSS or magnetic compass are disturbed. Finally, a set of simulations and field tests are carried out to validate the performance of the method.</p>

Abstract:Polarization navigation is a promising orientation-determination method inspired by insects' foraging behavior that offers the advantages of autonomous and high precision. In this paper, using the solar meridian as an azimuth reference is proposed. The model of the distribution pattern of the polarized skylight projected onto an imaging sensor is analyzed. The sufficient features of the solar meridian are proven. According to these features, an angle algorithm for an imaging polarization navigation sensor based on a machine-vision algorithm is proposed. In consideration of noise in images, the relation between the measured angle and the noise in images is modeled. This model cannot only optimize the threshold tolerance R in the algorithm but also describe the effects of several primary factors that can affect the measuring precision. In the simulation test, the measurement accuracy was better than 0.34 degrees. When the algorithm was tested on the polarization-detection system, the measurement accuracy was better than 0.37 degrees. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America
