Abstract:Cryphonectria parasitica is the causal fungal agent responsible for the chestnut blight disease. We report the generation of 14,263 expressed sequence tags representing 6318 unisequences for the fungus. Functional annotation of these unisequences revealed different gene expression patterns for wild-type and hypovirus-infected cultures at the sporulation stage and allowed the reconstruction of key C. parasitica signal transduction pathways conserved in the Sorbidaryomycetes. A list of homologous genes implicated in pathogenicity, sporulation, and virus replication in other fungi were also identified. A large-scale gene comparison indicated that C. parasitica is most closely related to the plant pathogen Fusarium graminearum but more closely related to the non-pathogen Neurospora crassa than to the rice pathogen Magnaporthe grisea. This transcriptional information lays a new and solid ground for further investigation of both the biology of the fungus and interaction between a hypovirus and the host fungus.
VIRULENCE OF VERTICILLIUM-LECANII AND AN APHID-DERIVED ISOLATE OF BEAUVERIA-BASSIANA (FUNGI, HYPHOMYCETES) FOR 6 SPECIES OF CEREAL-INFESTING APHIDS (HOMOPTERA, APHIDIDAE)

Abstract:An aphid-derived isolate of Beauveria bassiana (SGBB8601) and Verticillium lecanii (DNVL8701) were bioassayed against six species of globally distributed cereal-infesting aphids under controlled conditions. Aphids were immersed in conidial suspensions at concentrations ranging from 104 to 108 conidia/ml, each concentration being replicated six times with 20 aphids treated per replicate. Pathogenicity of both fungal species was confirmed on all the aphids tested, but in most cases, B. bassiana was more virulent than V. lecanii . The LC50 values for B. bassiana and V. lecanii were 8.2 × 104 and 4.1 × 105 conidia/ml, respectively, on Diuraphis noxia ; 2.1 × 105 and 9.8 × 105 on Schizaphis graminum ; 3.3 × 105 and 7.0 × 105 on Metapolophium dirhodum ; 1.1 × 105 and 1.3 × 106 on Sitobion avenae ; 2.1 × 106 and 8.9 × 105 on Rhopalosiphum maidis ; and 3.3 × 106 and 6.9 × 106 on R. padi . Statistical analysis indicated that there were substantial differences in susceptibility to the two pathogens and in virulence of each fungus to different aphid species. The LT50 values at all concentrations varied between the pathogens and among the aphid hosts with B. bassiana tending to kill aphids more rapidly. The mortality data were probit transformed, and a third-order polynomial model was fit to the data to describe responses of each host to conidial concentration and time after treatment. The potential for use of B. bassiana for aphid control is discussed.
Genetic Variation and Population Structure of Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus.

Abstract:Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) is a single-stranded, positive sense RNA virus infecting cucurbitaceous plants. In recent years, CGMMV has become an important pathogen of cucurbitaceous crops including watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber and bottle gourd in China, causing serious losses to their production. In this study, we surveyed CGMMV infection in various cucurbitaceous crops grown in Zhejiang Province and in several seed lots purchased from local stores with the dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dot-ELISA), using a CGMMV specific monoclonal antibody. Seven CGMMV isolates obtained from watermelon, grafted watermelon or oriental melon samples were cloned and sequenced. Identity analysis showed that the nucleotide identities of the seven complete genome sequences ranged from 99.2 to 100%. Phylogenetic analysis of seven CGMMV isolates as well as 24 other CGMMV isolates from the GenBank database showed that all CGMMV isolates could be grouped into two distinct monophyletic clades according to geographic distribution, i.e. Asian isolates for subtype I and European isolates for subtype II, indicating that population diversification of CGMMV isolates may be affected by geographical distribution. Site variation rate analysis of CGMMV found that the overall variation rate was below 8% and mainly ranged from 2 to 5%, indicating that the CGMMV genomic sequence was conservative. Base substitution type analysis of CGMMV showed a mutational bias, with more transitions (A↔G and C↔T) than transversions (A↔C, A↔T, G↔C and G↔T). Most of the variation occurring in the CGMMV genome resulted in non-synonymous substitutions, and the variation rate of some sites was higher than 30% because of this mutational bias. Selection constraint analysis of CGMMV ORFs showed strong negative selection acting on the replication-associated protein, similar to what occurs for other plant RNA viruses. Finally, potential recombination analysis identified isolate Ec as a recombinant with a low degree of confidence.
Differential fluctuation in virulence and VOC profiles among different cultures of entomopathogenic fungi

Abstract:Insect-passaged cultures of entomopathogenic fungi grown on potato dextrose agar media have been shown to have altered virulence and profiles of volatile compounds. The present study demonstrated the pathogenic status of FS(0) (in vitro) and FS(1) and FS(2) (insect-passaged cultures grown on PDA) cultures of Metarhizium anisopliae (strains 406 and 02049) and Beauveria bassiana by a non-choice assay, in which filter paper was inoculated with fungal spores at a concentration of 1 x 10(7) spores/ml. The FS(1) and FS(2) cultures of M. anisopliae strain 02049 and B. bassiana produced conidia with high virulence, and the volatile profiles of these conidia comprised relatively lower percentages of branched-alkanes than conidia from the FS(0) cultures. In contrast, the conidia from an FS(0) culture of M. anisopliae strain 406 had somewhat elevated virulence levels, but their volatile profile had <2% branched-alkanes. The FS(1) and FS(2) cultures of M. anisopliae strain 406 did not gain virulence, and these cultures showed a decline in virulence along with major alteration of their volatile profiles. Their volatile profiles mainly comprised branched-alkanes. The volatile profiles of the FS(1) and FS(2) cultures lacked n-tetradecane, which was an important component of all the virulent cultures. Four compounds, 2-phenylpropenal, 2,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexene, n-tetradecane and 2,6-dimethylheptadecane, were detected only from the virulent cultures, suggesting that low LT(50) values were probably due to the production of these compounds. This is the first report to characterize volatiles from FS(0), FS(1) and FS(2) cultures of entomopathogenic fungi; its utility in different aspects opens an interesting area for further investigations.
Identification Of Pathogenicity-Related Genes In Biofilm-Defective Acidovorax Citrulli By Transposon Tn5 Mutagenesis

Abstract:Biofilm formation is important for virulence of a large number of plant pathogenic bacteria. Indeed, some virulence genes have been found to be involved in the formation of biofilm in bacterial fruit blotch pathogen Acidovorax citrulli. However, some virulent strains of A. citrulli were unable to format biofilm, indicating the complexity between biofilm formation and virulence. In this study, virulence-related genes were identified in the biofilm-defective strain A1 of A. citrulli by using Tn5 insertion, pathogenicity test, and high-efficiency thermal asymmetric interlaced PCR (hiTAIL-PCR). Results from this study indicated that 22 out of the obtained 301 mutants significantly decreased the virulence of strain A1 compared to the wild-type. Furthermore, sequence analysis indicated that the obtained 22 mutants were due to the insertion of Tn5 into eight genes, including Aave 4244 (cation diffusion facilitator family transporter), Aave 4286 (hypothetical protein), Aave 4189 (alpha/beta hydrolase fold), Aave 1911 (IMP dehydrogenase/GMP reductase domain), Aave 4383 (bacterial export proteins, family 1), Aave 4256 (Hsp70 protein), Aave 0003 (histidine kinase, DNA gyrase B, and HSP90-like ATPase), and Aave 2428 (pyridoxal-phosphate dependent enzyme). Furthermore, the growth of mutant Aave 2428 was unaffected and even increased by the change in incubation temperature, NaCl concentration and the pH of the LB broth, indicating that this gene may be directly involved in the bacterial virulence. Overall, the determination of the eight pathogenicity-related genes in strain A1 will be helpful to elucidate the pathogenesis of biofilm-defective A. citrulli.
Three Small Cysteine-Free Proteins (CFP1–3) Are Required for Insect-Pathogenic Lifestyle of Metarhizium Robertsii

Abstract:Unique CFP (cysteine-free protein; 120 aa) has been identified as an extraordinary virulence factor in Beauveria bassiana (Cordycipitaceae), a main source of wide-spectrum fungal insecticides. Its homologs exclusively exist in wide-spectrum insect pathogens of Hypocreales, suggesting their importance for a fungal insect-pathogenic lifestyle. In this study, all three CFP homologs (CFP1–3, 128–145 aa) were proven essential virulence factors in Metarhizium robertsii (Clavicipitaceae). Despite limited effects on asexual cycles in vitro, knockout mutants of cfp1,cfp2 and cfp3 were severely compromised in their capability for normal cuticle infection, in which most tested Galleria mellonella larvae survived. The blocked cuticle infection concurred with reduced secretion of extracellular enzymes, including Pr1 proteases required cuticle penetration. Cuticle-bypassing infection by intrahemocoel injection of ~250 conidia per larva resulted in a greater reduction in virulence in the mutant of cfp1 (82%) than of cfp2 (21%) or cfp3 (25%) versus the parental wild-type. Transcriptomic analysis revealed dysregulation of 604 genes (up/down ratio: 251:353) in the Δcfp1 mutant. Many of them were involved in virulence-related cellular processes and events aside from 154 functionally unknown genes (up/down ratio: 56:98). These results reinforce the essential roles of small CFP homologs in hypocrealean fungal adaptation to insect-pathogenic lifestyle and their exploitability for the genetic improvement of fungal insecticidal activity.

Abstract:The ascomycete fungus Beauveria bassiana is a pathogen of hundreds of insect species and is commercially produced as an environmentally friendly mycoinsecticide. We sequenced the genome of B. bassiana and a phylogenomic analysis confirmed that ascomycete entomopathogenicity is polyphyletic, but also revealed convergent evolution to insect pathogenicity. We also found many species-specific virulence genes and gene family expansions and contractions that correlate with host ranges and pathogenic strategies. These include B. bassiana having many more bacterial-like toxins (suggesting an unsuspected potential for oral toxicity) and effector-type proteins. The genome also revealed that B. bassiana resembles the closely related Cordyceps militaris in being heterothallic, although its sexual stage is rarely observed. A high throughput RNA-seq transcriptomic analysis revealed that B. bassiana could sense and adapt to different environmental niches by activating well-defined gene sets. The information from this study will facilitate further development of B. bassiana as a cost-effective mycoinsecticide.

Abstract:Ustilaginoidea virens (Cooke) Takah is an ascomycetous fungus that causes rice false smut, a devastating emerging disease worldwide. Here we report a 39.4 Mb draft genome sequence of U. virens that encodes 8,426 predicted genes. The genome has ~25% repetitive sequences that have been affected by repeat-induced point mutations. Evolutionarily, U. virens is close to the entomopathogenic Metarhizium spp., suggesting potential host jumping across kingdoms. U. virens possesses reduced gene inventories for polysaccharide degradation, nutrient uptake and secondary metabolism, which may result from adaptations to the specific floret infection and biotrophic lifestyles. Consistent with their potential roles in pathogenicity, genes for secreted proteins and secondary metabolism and the pathogen-host interaction database genes are highly enriched in the transcriptome during early infection. We further show that 18 candidate effectors can suppress plant hypersensitive responses. Together, our analyses offer new insights into molecular mechanisms of evolution, biotrophy and pathogenesis of U. virens.

Abstract:Colletotrichum lindemuthianum is the most frequent pathogenic fungus of the common bean Phaseolus vulgaris. This filamentous fungus employs a hemibiotrophic nutrition/infection strategy, which is characteristic of many Colletotrichum species. Due to host-pathogen coevolution, C. lindemuthianum includes pathotypes with a diversity of virulence against differential common bean varieties. In this study, we performed comparative genomic analyses on three pathotypes with different virulence levels and a non-pathogenic pathotype, isolated from different geographical areas in Mexico. Our results revealed large genomes with high transposable element contents that have undergone expansions, generating intraspecific diversity. All the pathotypes exhibited a similar number of clusters of orthologous genes (COGs) and Gene Ontology (GO) terms. TFomes contain families that are typical in fungal genomes; however, they show different contents between pathotypes, mainly in transcription factors with the fungal-specific TF and Zn2Cys6 domains. Peptidase families mainly contain abundant serine peptidases, metallopeptidases, and cysteine peptidases. In the secretomes, the number of genes differed between the pathotypes, with a high percentage of candidate effectors. Both the virulence gene and CAZyme gene content for each pathotype was abundant and diverse, and the latter was enriched in hemicellulolytic enzymes. We provide new insights into the nature of intraspecific diversity among C. lindemuthianum pathotypes and the origin of their ability to rapidly adapt to genetic changes in its host and environmental conditions.
A study for minisatellitic markers of Conidiobolus coronatus' pathogenicity to Galleria mellonella larvae

Abstract:A selected panel of 13 colonies of entomopathogenic fungus Conidiobolus coronatus representing 6 variants of pathogenicity to Galleria mellonella larvae (ranged from 100 to 10% of efficiency), derived from single spores, were tested for the presence of hypervariable loci in their genomes by hybridization with Jeffreys' human minisatellite probe 33.6. The probe produced informative fingerprints and revealed slight differences among colonies analyzed. Up to 20 variable bands per colony were recognized in the size range of 2-20 kb. The band sharing within groups with the same pathogenicity ranged from 0.966 to 0.800. The genetic distance between different variants ranged from 0.026 to 0.282. A few characteristic bands for high and low pathogenicity to the larvae were found.
Species boundaries in plant pathogenic fungi: a Colletotrichum case study

Abstract:Background: Accurate delimitation of plant pathogenic fungi is critical for the establishment of quarantine regulations, screening for genetic resistance to plant pathogens, and the study of ecosystem function. Concatenation analysis of multi-locus DNA sequence data represents a powerful and commonly used approach to recognizing evolutionary independent lineages in fungi. It is however possible to mask the discordance between individual gene trees, thus the speciation events might be erroneously estimated if one simply recognizes well supported clades as distinct species without implementing a careful examination of species boundary. To investigate this phenomenon, we studied Colletotrichum siamense s. lat., which is a cosmopolitan pathogen causing serious diseases on many economically important plant hosts. Presently there are significant disagreements among mycologists as to what constitutes a species in C. siamense s. lat., with the number of accepted species ranging from one to seven. Results: In this study, multiple approaches were used to test the null hypothesis "C. siamense is a species complex", using a global strain collection. Results of molecular analyses based on the Genealogical Concordance Phylogenetic Species Recognition (GCPSR) and coalescent methods (e.g. Generalized Mixed Yule-coalescent and Poisson Tree Processes) do not support the recognition of any independent evolutionary lineages within C. siamense s. lat. as distinct species, thus rejecting the null hypothesis. This conclusion is reinforced by the recognition of genetic recombination, cross fertility, and the comparison of ecological and morphological characters. Our results indicate that reproductive isolation, geographic and host plant barriers to gene flow are absent in C. siamense s. lat. Conclusions: This discovery emphasized the importance of a polyphasic approach when describing novel species in morphologically conserved genera of plant pathogenic fungi.
Genetic Structure of Botrytis Cinerea Populations from Different Host Plants in California.

Abstract:The population structure of Botrytis cinerea was investigated by using transposable elements, DNA fingerprinting generated by microsatellite primed-polymerase chain reaction (MP-PCR), and sensitivity to the hydroxyanilide fungicide, fenhexamid, for 234 isolates collected from fig, grape, kiwifruit, pea, and squash in California. Among 234 isolates tested, 195 had two transposable elements, Boty and Flipper (transposa type), 38 had only the Boty element (Boty type), and one had neither of these elements (vacuma type). Four of these 234 isolates, which belonged to the Boty type, were resistant to fenhexamid. A phenogram generated based on MP-PCR markers showed that the isolates were not clustered based on their source hosts or the presence of transposable elements. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that there were no significant genetic differentiations among isolates collected from grape, kiwifruit, pea, and squash at the Kearney Agricultural Center. A more detailed analysis based on AMOVA partition of the total genetic variance indicated that 96% of the variation occurred within populations. The parsimony tree length permutation (PTLPT) and index of association ( IA) analyses of MP-PCR data set were consistent with absence of sexual recombination in sampled populations of this pathogen.
New Hybrid Strains via Intraspecific Protoplast Fusion of the Entomopathogenic Fungi Lecanicillium spp.

Abstract:The entomopathogenic fungal genus Lecanicillium Gams and Zare (formerly classified as the species Verticillium lecanii) includes species that are highly pathogenic to many insect genera. In this study, we identified six Lecanicilliumspp. isolated strains (designated as V1-V6) belonging to L. lecanii (V1, V3 and V5) and L. attenuatum (V2, V4 and V6). In addition, these strains were used to obtain new strains via protoplast fusion, and nit mutants were used for protoplast selection. Genetic recombination of the hybrid strains was determined using the random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) technique. We obtained nine stable fusant strains from 176 new hybrid strains, which were termed V12-10, V14-3, V16-4, V23-6, V25-8, V34-14, V36-5, V45-16 and V56-7. Morphological characteristics varied between the hybrid and parental strains. Genomic DNA analysis of the fusants also showed genetic recombination. The median lethal concentration (LC50) for the fusants were lower than that for parental strains, and the median survival time (LT50) for the fusants were reduced compared with that for parental strains. Thus, these results showed that we produced new, more virulent hybrid Lecanicillium spp. strainsas biological control agents via intraspecific protoplast fusion.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Goss’s wilt and leaf blight of maize is an economically important disease caused by the Gram-positive bacterium, Clavibacter nebraskensis ( Cn ). Little is known about the ecology and pathogenesis of this bacterium. Here, we used phenotypic assays and a high-throughput whole-genome sequencing approach to explore among-strain variation in virulence and multistrain reproductive success in planta . Our survey of 41 strains revealed that more recently sampled strains tended to have higher virulence than strains sampled before 2010 and tended to be more genetically divergent from the reference strain, isolated in 1971. More detailed assays with a representative sample of 13 of these strains revealed that host genotype (resistant or susceptible) did not strongly affect strain success and that strain success in planta in multi-strain communities was not closely associated with virulence in single-strain assays. Two weakly virulent strains, CIC354 and CIC370, had the greatest reproductive success, whereas the most highly virulent strains did not significantly change in frequency in any host genotype. A genomic analysis revealed candidate genes, including putative virulence factors (i.e., a secreted cellulase), responsible for among-strain variation in reproductive success. IMPORTANCE Non-pathogenic strains of many bacterial pathogens are reported to coexist with pathogenic strains in symptomatic plants. To understand the ecology and pathogenesis of the pathogen population, it is essential to study strain dynamics in the context of the host. We created a community of 13 strains exhibiting diverse virulence phenotypes and used this community to infect the host plant. We compared the strain frequency of these strains before and after the host infection. Contrary to our hypothesis of highly virulent strains being selected by the susceptible host, we found that weakly virulent strains were selected by both resistant and susceptible host lines. We identified several genes associated with strain frequency shifts suggesting their role in strain colonization, virulence, and fitness.

Abstract:Biological control methods involving entomopathogenic fungi like Beauveria bassiana have shown to be a valuable approach in integrated pest management as an environmentally friendly alternative to control pests and pathogens. Identifying genetic determinants of pathogenicity in B. bassiana is instrumental for enhancing its virulence against insects like the resistant soybean pest Piezodorus guildinii. This study focused on comparative genomics of different B. bassiana strains and gene expression analyses to identify virulence genes in the hypervirulent strain ILB308, especially in response to infection of P. guildniii and growth on hydrocarbon HC15, a known virulence enhancer. Strain ILB308 showed the highest number of virulence-related features, such as candidate virulence proteins, effectors, small secreted proteins, and biosynthetic gene clusters. ILB308 also had a high percentage of unique DNA sequences, including six putative supernumerary scaffolds. Gene expression analysis at 4 days post-inoculation revealed upregulation of known virulence factors, including Tudor domain proteins, LysM motif-containing proteins, and subtilisin-like proteases, and novel genes like secreted effectors and heat-labile enterotoxins. Growth on HC15 led to the upregulation of genes associated with oxidoreductase activity related to cuticular alkane degradation and fermentation metabolism/antioxidant responses in the hemolymph. The presence of supernumerary chromosomes and unique virulence genes in ILB308 may contribute to its higher virulence and could be considered as potential targets for enhancing fungal virulence through genetic manipulation.

Abstract:The gray leaf spots caused by Cercospora spp. severely affect the yield and quality of maize. However, the evolutionary relation and pathogenicity variation between species of the Cercospora genus is largely unknown. In this study, we constructed high-quality reference genomes by nanopore sequencing two Cercospora species, namely, C. zeae-maydis and C. zeina , with differing pathogenicity, collected from northeast (Liaoning [LN]) and southeast (Yunnan [YN]) China, respectively. The genome size of C. zeae-maydis -LN is 45.08 Mb, containing 10,839 annotated genes, whereas that of Cercospora zeina -YN is 42.18 Mb, containing 10,867 annotated genes, of which approximately 86.58% are common in the two species. The difference in their genome size is largely attributed to increased long terminal repeat retrotransposons of 3.8 Mb in total length in C. zeae-maydis -LN. There are 41 and 30 carbohydrate-binding gene subfamilies identified in C. zeae-maydis -LN and C. zeina -YN, respectively. A higher number of carbohydrate-binding families found in C. zeae-maydis -LN, and its unique CBM4, CBM37, and CBM66, in particular, may contribute to variation in pathogenicity between the two species, as the carbohydrate-binding genes are known to encode cell wall–degrading enzymes. Moreover, there are 114 and 107 effectors predicted, with 47 and 46 having unique potential pathogenicity in C. zeae-maydis -LN and C. zeina -YN, respectively. Of eight effectors randomly selected for pathogenic testing, five were found to inhibit cell apoptosis induced by Bcl-2-associated X. Taken together, our results provide genomic insights into variation in pathogenicity between C. zeae-maydis and C. zeina . Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). Characterization of Mitogenomes from Four Mucorales Species and Insights into Pathogenicity.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Mucorales, as one major order of Zygomycetes fungi, can infect human beings and cause serious consequence. We have noticed the pathogenicity of Mucorales is closely related to energy metabolism, while mitochondria play the role of energy factories in almost all biological activities.METHODS:Virulence of M irregularis, M hiemalis, L corymbifera and R arrhizus were verified in Galleria mellonella larvae, as well as mitochondrial gene copies analysed with RT-qPCR. Mitogenomes of the four Mucorales species were sequenced based on illumina NovaSeq technology to study their characteristic features and functional regions.RESULTS:Variant virulence of M irregularis, M hiemalis, L corymbifera and R arrhizu were verified by clinical retrospective data and our G mellonella infection models, also copies of mitochondrial genes indicated the significant associations with pathogenicity. A total of 274.18 clean reads were generated to be assembled; the complete mitogenomes of the four Mucorales species were obtained with totally different length. After the genomes annotated and compared, M irregularis was found more similar with M hiemalis than those of L corymbifera and R arrhizus, especially the small (rrns) and large (rrnl) subunits of mitochondrial ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The GC content, ncRNAs and the distribution of the SNPs and InDels were also compared, and the GC content rate of fungi seems to be related to the fungal thermal adaptability. In addition, linear mitogenomes of these four Mucorales showed diverse arrangements of orf genes and directionality of some conserved gene elements.CONCLUSION:This study uncovered the pathogenicity variances among the four Mucorales species and the relationship between their mitogenomic features and clinical pathogenicity. Further studies like spatial structure of mitochondrial genomes and the comprehensive analysis of transcription regulation are needed.

Abstract:is a cross-kingdom pathogen. While some strains cause disseminated fusariosis and blinding corneal infections in humans, others are responsible for devastating vascular wilt diseases in plants. To better understand the distinct adaptations of to animal or plant hosts, we conducted a comparative phenotypic and genetic analysis of two strains: MRL8996 (isolated from a keratitis patient) and Fol4287 (isolated from a wilted tomato [Solanum lycopersicum]). In vivo infection of mouse corneas and tomato plants revealed that, while both strains cause symptoms in both hosts, MRL8996 caused more severe corneal ulceration and perforation in mice, whereas Fol4287 induced more pronounced wilting symptoms in tomato. assays using abiotic stress treatments revealed that the human pathogen MRL8996 was better adapted to elevated temperatures, whereas the plant pathogen Fol4287 was more tolerant of osmotic and cell wall stresses. Both strains displayed broad resistance to antifungal treatment, with MRL8996 exhibiting the paradoxical effect of increased tolerance to higher concentrations of the antifungal caspofungin. We identified a set of accessory chromosomes (ACs) and protein-encoding genes with distinct transposon profiles and functions, respectively, between MRL8996 and Fol4287. Interestingly, ACs from both genomes also encode proteins with shared functions, such as chromatin remodeling and post-translational protein modifications. Our phenotypic assays and comparative genomics analyses lay the foundation for future studies correlating genotype with phenotype and for developing targeted antifungals for agricultural and clinical uses.
