Abstract:Load forecasting is necessary for economic generation of power, economic allocation between plants (unit commitment scheduling), maintenance scheduling, and for system security such as peak load shaving by power interchange with interconnected utilities. A novel hybrid load forecasting algorithm, which combines the fuzzy support vector regression method and the linear extrapolation based on similar days method with the analysis of temperature sensitivities is presented in this paper. The fuzzy support vector regression method is used to consider the lower load-demands in weekends and Monday than on other weekdays. The normal load in weekdays is forecasted by the linear extrapolation based on similar days method. Moreover, the temperature sensitivities are used to improve the accuracy of the load forecasting in relation to the daily load and temperature. The result demonstrated the accuracy of the proposed load forecasting scheme.

Abstract:Short-term load forecasting (STLF) plays a very important role in improving the economy and security of electricity system operations. In this paper, a hybrid STLF method is proposed based on the improved ensemble empirical mode decomposition (IEEMD) and back propagation neural network (BPNN). To alleviate the mode mixing and end-effect problems in traditional empirical mode decomposition (EMD), an IEEMD is presented based on the degree of wave similarity. By applying the IEEMD method, the nonlinear and nonstationary original load series is decomposed into a finite number of stationary intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and a residual. Among these components, the high frequency (namely IMF 1 ) is always so small that it has little contribution to model fitting, while it sometimes has a great disturbance for the STLF. Therefore, the IMF 1 is removed in the proposed hybrid method for denoising. The remaining IMFs and residual are forecast by BPNN, and then the forecasting results of each component are combined with BPNN to obtain the final predicted load series. Three groups of studies were done to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid method. The results show that the proposed hybrid method outperforms other methods both mentioned in this paper and previous studies in terms of all the three standard statistical indicators considered in this study.

Abstract:Electricity load forecasting algorithms are used in the smart grid to predict the electricity demand in the future. Besides that, it helps in reducing the electricity generation cost. In the literature, three types of load forecasting are done such as short-term, medium-term, and long-term. In this paper, short term forecasting is done. The short-term forecasting algorithm predict the electricity demand from few hours to several weeks ahead. Due to the nonlinear, nonstationary and nonseasonal nature of the electric load time series, accurate forecasting is challenging. In this paper, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and swarm optimization algorithm is hybrid in order to improve the prediction of load forecasting. We have considered Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Binary Particle Swarm Optimization (BPSO) algorithms in our work. The BPSO algorithm used to improve the learning rate in the ANN network. The experimental results were simulated in MATLAB and various performance metrics such as RMSE, MAPE, minimum and maximum error determined. The results show that the proposed algorithms provide better results as compared to the existing algorithms.

Abstract:An accurate power load prediction in smart grid plays an important role in maintaining the balance between power supply and demand, and thus ensuring the safe and stable operation of power system. In this paper we develop a hybrid power load prediction model, which involves three main steps: data decomposition with the empirical mode decomposition method, intelligent data processes with the minimal redundancy maximal relevance method and the weighted gray relationship projection algorithm, and support vector machine prediction, whose parameters are optimized through the particle swarm optimization algorithm with a second-order oscillation and repulsive force factor. Moreover, we predict the power load with our hybrid forecasting model based on the real dataset from the electricity market in Singapore, and also compare our prediction results with those by using other prediction methods. Our comparison results show that the proposed novel hybrid forecasting model can generate a higher prediction accuracy and lower error.

Abstract:Forecasting accuracy electricity load can help industrial enterprises optimise production scheduling based on peak and off-peak electricity prices. The electricity load forecasting results can be provided to an electricity system to improve electricity generation efficiency and minimize energy consumption by developing electricity generation plans in advance and by avoiding over or under the generation of electricity. However, because of the different informatization levels in different industries, few reliable intelligent electricity management systems are applied on the power supply side. Based on industrial big data and machine learning algorithms, this study proposes an integrated model to forecast short-term electricity load. The hybrid model based on the hybrid mode decomposition algorithms is proposed to decompose the total electricity load signal. To improve the generalisation ability of the forecasting model, a dynamic forecasting model is proposed based on the improved hybrid intelligent algorithm to forecast the short-term electricity load. The results show that the accuracy of the proposed dynamic integrated electricity load forecasting model is as high as 99%. The integrated framework could forecast abnormal electricity consumption in time and provide reliable evidence for production process scheduling.

Abstract:Electrical load forecasting plays a vital role in the operation and planning of power plants for the utility companies and policy makers to design stable and reliable energy infrastructure. Load forecasting is categorized in long-term, mid-term and short-term. Among them, short term load forecasting that monitors weekly, daily, hourly and even sub-hourly operations is gaining a lot of attention which saves time and cost while satisfying consumers’ needs without interruption. Different models such as conventional, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and hybrid models have been developed to investigate short-term load forecasting. However, these models suffers various issues such as low speed convergence (conventional), high complexity (AI) and so on. Consequently, this work proposes a hybrid method using Prophet and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) models to overcome the above limitations in an effort to predict accurate load. The Prophet model utilize linear as well as non-linear data to predict original load data but still some of the residuals are left which are regarded as non-linear data. Here, these residuals (non-linear data) are trained by employing LSTM, and finally both the forecasted data from Prophet and LSTM are trained by Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) to further enhance prediction accuracy. Elia Grid real time quarter hour based electrical load data from 2014 to 2021 has been utilized to verify working performance of proposed hybrid technique by computing Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Mean Average Error (MAE). Results substantiate that proposed hybrid models outperforms the standalone models of Autoregressive Integrated Moving average (ARIMA), LSTM and Prophet model on the basis of reduced errors with least computation time.

Abstract:Electric energy demand forecasting is vital in contemporary power systems, especially amidst market deregulation trends and the increasing influence of industrial customers on power dynamics. However, existing forecasting models encounter challenges such as slow convergence and high complexity. Addressing these issues, this study proposes a hybrid forecasting model that combines the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) with Gene Expression Programming (GEP) to enhance predictions of electrical energy consumption. Validated using real-time monthly electrical load data from an industrial user in Uganda, the hybrid model outperforms individual ANFIS and GEP models, demonstrating reduced errors and minimal computation time. The application of this hybrid model presents promising results, showcasing exceptional predictive capabilities and offering potential improvements in efficiency and precision for electrical energy consumption forecasting amidst market deregulation and evolving industrial dynamics.

Abstract:The main and pivot part of electric companies is the load forecasting. Decision-makers and think tank of power sectors should forecast the future need of electricity with large accuracy and small error to give uninterrupted and free of load shedding power to consumers. The demand of electricity can be forecasted amicably by many Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques among which hybrid methods are most popular. The present technologies of load forecasting and present work regarding combination of various ML, DL and AI algorithms are reviewed in this paper. The comprehensive review of single and hybrid forecasting models with functions; advantages and disadvantages are discussed in this paper. The comparison between the performance of the models in terms of Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) values are compared and discussed with literature of different models to support the researchers to select the best model for load prediction. This comparison validates the fact that the hybrid forecasting models will provide a more optimal solution.

Abstract:Energy consumption in the form of fuel or electricity is ubiquitous globally. Among energy types, electricity is crucial to human life in terms of cooking, warming and cooling of shelters, powering of electronic devices as well as commercial and industrial operations. Users of electronic devices sometimes consume fluctuating amounts of electricity generated from smart-grid infrastructure owned by the government or private investors. However, frequent imbalance is noticed between the demand and supply of electricity, hence effective planning is required to facilitate its distribution among consumers. Such effective planning is stimulated by the need to predict future consumption within a short period. Although several interesting classical techniques have been used for such predictions, they still require improvement for the purpose of reducing significant predictive errors when used for short-term load forecasting. This research develops a near-zero cooperative probabilistic scenario analysis and decision tree (PSA-DT) model to address the lacuna of enormous predictive error faced by the state-of-the-art models. The PSA-DT is based on a probabilistic technique in view of the uncertain nature of electricity consumption, complemented by a DT to reinforce the collaboration of the two techniques. Based on detailed experimental analytics on residential, commercial and industrial data loads, the PSA-DT model outperforms the state-of-the-art models in terms of accuracy to a near-zero error rate. This implies that its deployment for electricity demand planning will be of great benefit to various smart-grid operators and homes.

Abstract:While energy, which is an indispensable part of everyday life, maintains its importance and place in socio-economic structures of countries, importance of electricity energy, as an important component of energy, is increasing its gravity exponentially. Importance of electricity energy demand maintains its increasing trend in line with growing population, urbanization, industrialization, becoming widespread of technology and welfare. While meeting electricity energy demand, correct and effective load forecasting is needed in order to ensure operational safety without losing the stability of voltage, frequency and power flows within the limits determined under the real time conditions of electric power systems, operate and plan secure and low-cost electricity transmission systems and supply sustainable, reliable, high quality and affordable electricity to consumers. In recent years, use of the artificial intelligence models are quite common in many areas of the power system analysis and control, static and dynamic security analysis, dynamic load modelling and alarm processing and error diagnostics. Therefore, in this study, hybrid artificial neural network model optimized with genetic algorithm has been proposed to perform short-term load forecast since fairly good forecasting results are being obtained especially for non-linear complex problems. The proposed short-term load forecasting model has been tested by making 24 hours load forecasting using actual load data of Ankara Region in Turkey. The results obtained from the proposed model have been compared with classical ANN. In this study, for short-term electric load forecasting based on artificial neural networks and genetic algorithm an adaptive hybrid system has been proposed. Using artificial neural network based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) a new approach for short-term electric load forecasting has been developed. This proposed hybrid algorithm has been implemented for short-term load forecasting. In the proposed model, the actual forecast was made by ANN, Genetic Algorithm is used to select the most appropriate activation function for each node of ANN. Thus, it has been observed that network error decreased even more than classical ANN. The results show that hybrid ANN gives better result than classical ANN. So, the accuracy of the proposed model for short-term load forecasting has been increased. These results showed that the proposed model has a higher accuracy rate than the classical ANN in the short-term load forecasting.

Abstract:In this paper, a new two-step algorithm is proposed for short-term load forecasting (STLF). In the first step of the method, a wavelet transform (WT) and an artificial neural network (ANN) are used for the primary forecasting of the load over the next 24h. Inputs of this step are weather features (include the daily mean temperature, maximum temperature, mean humidity, and mean wind speed) and previous day load data. In the second step, a WT, the similar-hour method and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) are used to improve the results of primary load forecasting. In this study, a WT is employed to extract low-order components of the load and weather data. Furthermore, the number of weather data inputs has been reduced by investigating the weather conditions of different cities. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, it is applied to forecast Iran’s load and New South Wales of Australian’s load. Simulation results in four different cases show that the proposed method increases load forecasting accuracy.

Abstract:Accurate power load forecasting is crucial for the sustainable operation of smart grids. However, the complexity and uncertainty of load, along with the large-scale and high-dimensional energy information, present challenges in handling intricate dynamic features and long-term dependencies. This paper proposes a computational approach to address these challenges in short-term power load forecasting and energy information management, with the goal of accurately predicting future load demand. The study introduces a hybrid method that combines multiple deep learning models, the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) is employed to capture long-term dependencies in time series data, while the Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) efficiently learns patterns and features in load data. Additionally, the attention mechanism is incorporated to automatically focus on the input components most relevant to the load prediction task, further enhancing model performance. According to the experimental evaluation conducted on four public datasets, including GEFCom2014, the proposed algorithm outperforms the baseline models on various metrics such as prediction accuracy, efficiency, and stability. Notably, on the GEFCom2014 dataset, FLOP is reduced by over 48.8%, inference time is shortened by more than 46.7%, and MAPE is improved by 39%. The proposed method significantly enhances the reliability, stability, and cost-effectiveness of smart grids, which facilitates risk assessment optimization and operational planning under the context of information management for smart grid systems.

Abstract:Development in economics and social society has led to rapid growth in electricity demand. Accurate residential electricity load forecasting is helpful for the transformation of residential energy consumption structure and can also curb global climate warming. This paper proposes a hybrid residential short-term load forecasting framework (DCNN-LSTM-AE-AM) based on deep learning, which combines dilated convolutional neural network (DCNN), long short-term memory network (LSTM), autoencoder (AE), and attention mechanism (AM) to improve the prediction results. First, we design a T-nearest neighbors (TNN) algorithm to preprocess the original data. Further, a DCNN is introduced to extract the long-term feature. Secondly, we combine the LSTM with the AE (LSTM-AE) to learn the sequence features hidden in the extracted features and decode them into output features. Finally, the AM is further introduced to extract and fuse the high-level stage features to achieve the prediction results. Experiments on two real-world datasets show that the proposed method is good at capturing the oscillation characteristics of low-load data and outperforms other methods.

Abstract:Load forecasting (LF) is an essential factor in power system management. LF helps the utility maximize the utilization of power-generating plants and schedule them both reliably and economically. In this paper, a novel and hybrid forecasting method is proposed, combining a long short-term memory network (LSTM) and neural prophet (NP) through an artificial neural network. The paper aims to predict electric load for different time horizons with improved accuracy as well as consistency. The proposed model uses historical load data, weather data, and statistical features obtained from the historical data. Multiple case studies have been conducted with two different real-time data sets on three different types of load forecasting. The hybrid model is later compared with a few established methods of load forecasting found in the literature with different performance metrics: mean average percentage error (MAPE), root mean square error (RMSE), sum of square error (SSE), and regression coefficient (R). Moreover, a guideline with various attributes is provided for different types of load forecasting considering the applications of the proposed model. The results and comparisons from our test cases showed that the proposed hybrid model improved the forecasting accuracy for three different types of load forecasting over other forecasting techniques.

Abstract:Load forecasting in Smart Grids (SG) is a major module of current energy management systems, that play a vital role in optimizing resource allocation, improving grid stability, and assisting the combination of renewable energy sources (RES). It contains the predictive of electricity consumption forms over certain time intervals. Load Forecasting remains a stimulating task as load data has exhibited changing patterns because of factors such as weather change and shifts in energy usage behaviour. The beginning of advanced data analytics and machine learning (ML) approaches; particularly deep learning (DL) has mostly enhanced load forecasting accuracy. Deep neural networks (DNNs) namely Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have achieved popularity for their capability to capture difficult temporal dependencies in load data. This study designs a Short-Load Forecasting scheme using a Hybrid Deep Learning and Beluga Whale Optimization (LFS-HDLBWO) approach. The major intention of the LFS-HDLBWO technique is to predict the load in the SG environment. To accomplish this, the LFS-HDLBWO technique initially uses a Z-score normalization approach for scaling the input dataset. Besides, the LFS-HDLBWO technique makes use of convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory with an autoencoder (CBLSTM-AE) model for load prediction purposes. Finally, the BWO algorithm could be used for optimal hyperparameter selection of the CBLSTM-AE algorithm, which helps to enhance the overall prediction results. A wide-ranging experimental analysis was made to illustrate the better predictive results of the LFS-HDLBWO method. The obtained value demonstrates the outstanding performance of the LFS-HDLBWO system over other existing DL algorithms with a minimum average error rate of 3.43 and 2.26 under FE and Dayton grid datasets, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract An accurate and reliable prediction of future energy patterns is of utmost significance for the smooth operation of several related activities such as capacity or generation unit planning, transmission network optimization, better resources availability, and many more. With the availability of historical load datasets through smart grid systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning-based techniques have been extensively developed for achieving the desired objectives. However, effectively capturing strong randomness and non-linear fluctuations in the load time-series remains a critical issue that demands concrete solutions. Considering this, the current research proposes a hybrid approach amalgamating data smoothing and decomposition strategy with deep neural models for improving forecasting results. Moreover, an attention mechanism is integrated to capture relevant portions of the time series, thus achieving the desired ability to capture long-term dependencies among load demand observations. This integration enhances the prediction and generalization capabilities of the proposed model. To validate the performance benefits achieved by the proposed approach, a comparative evaluation is conducted with state-of-the-art neural-based load series prediction models. The performance assessment is carried out on a novel real-world dataset of five southern states of India, and the superiority of the proposed in capturing load time-series variations is well observed and demonstrated in terms of several performance indicators.

Abstract:The study of power load forecasting is gaining greater significance nowadays, particularly with the use and integration of renewable power sources and external power stations. Power forecasting is an important task in the planning, control, and operation of utility power systems. In addition, load forecasting (LF) aims to estimate the power or energy needed to meet the required power or energy to supply the specific load. In this article, we introduce, review and compare different power load forecasting techniques. Our goal is to help in the process of explaining the problem of power load forecasting via brief descriptions of the proposed methods applied in the last decade. The study reviews previous research that deals with the design of intelligent systems for power forecasting using various methods. The methods are organized into five groups—Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Regression, Decision Tree (DT), Linear Regression (LR), and Fuzzy Sets (FS). This way, the review provides a clear concept of power load forecasting for the purposes of future research and study.

Abstract:Electric load estimation is an important activity for electrical power system operators to operate the system stably and optimally. This paper develops a machine learning model with a long short‐term memory and a factor analysis to predict the load at a specific hour of the day on an electrical power substation. Historical load data from the 33‐/11‐kV substation near Kakatiya University in Warangal are taken at each hour of the day for the period from September 2018 to November 2018. A new long short‐term memory architecture with factor analysis is being designed based on the approach used to predict substation loads by simulation in Microsoft Azure Notebooks. Based on the study, it was found that the proposed design predicts loads with good accuracy.

The proposed ABMO‐ANN hybrid method outperforms previous methods and minimizes prediction error using statistical error criteria such as mean absolute percentage error, symmetric mean absolute percentage error, and root mean square error. In recent years, one of the primary causes of high electricity consumption is the growing global population and the availability of power‐demanding smart devices. As a result, accurate load forecasting tools are required for effective energy conservation in microgrids. Various simulation tools and artificial intelligence (AI)‐based methods have been used to make the best forecasts of electricity demand. Furthermore, conventional systems are static and based solely on historical data. To address this practical need, this work aims to create a machine learning (ML) model for short‐term load forecasting based on feature selection and parameter optimization. This research proposes a hybrid short‐term load demand prediction approach that combines an adaptive barnacle‐mating optimizer (ABMO) and an artificial neural network (ANN). When compared to the regression tree (RT), support vector machine (SVM), ANN, and particle swarm optimization‐based ANN (PSO‐ANN) algorithms, the proposed ABMO‐ANN algorithm reduces mean absolute percentage errors by 67.69%, 64.58%, 59.18%, and 42.02%, respectively. Compared to conventional RT, SVM, ANN, and PSO‐ANN algorithm, the hybrid ABMO with ANN outperforms them based on mean absolute percentage error, root mean square error, correlation coefficient (R2) , symmetric mean absolute percentage error, and agreement index (d).
