Abstract:Surgical minimally invasive techniques such as image intervention,laparoscopy,endoscopy,and assisted medical robotics have become the mainstream of minimally invasive surgery (MIS).However,the vague concept,diverse misunderstanding,and the lack of standards have led to a lot of malpractice in current MIS.Based on the analysis of the clinical situation and the domestic and foreign literatures,the authors have put forward the theory of comprehensive minimally invasive surgery (CMIS),and established the concepts of minimally invasive prevention,minimally invasive diagnosis and minimally invasive follow-up in the view of hepatobiliary surgery.The authors have proposed "three-All" principles of all personnel,all aspects and all processes,and established a comprehensive four-level criteria of outcomes,complications,time and costs for CMIS,in an attempt to provide feasible and practical concepts and standards for MIS from a clinical practice and theoretical level,with a view to standardizing minimally invasive procedures and solving the problem of MIS.

Abstract:The significant advancements within the electronics miniaturization field have shifted the scientific interest towards a new class of precision devices, namely microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Specifically, MEMS refers to microscaled precision devices generally produced through micromachining techniques that combine mechanical and electrical components for fulfilling tasks normally carried out by macroscopic systems. Although their presence is found throughout all the aspects of daily life, recent years have witnessed countless research works involving the application of MEMS within the biomedical field, especially in drug synthesis and delivery, microsurgery, microtherapy, diagnostics and prevention, artificial organs, genome synthesis and sequencing, and cell manipulation and characterization. Their tremendous potential resides in the advantages offered by their reduced size, including ease of integration, lightweight, low power consumption, high resonance frequency, the possibility of integration with electrical or electronic circuits, reduced fabrication costs due to high mass production, and high accuracy, sensitivity, and throughput. In this context, this paper aims to provide an overview of MEMS technology by describing the main materials and fabrication techniques for manufacturing purposes and their most common biomedical applications, which have evolved in the past years.

Abstract:Emerging paradigms furthering the reach of medical technology deeper into human anatomy present unique modeling, control and sensing problems. This paper discusses a brief history of medical robotics leading to the current trend of minimally invasive intervention and diagnostics in confined spaces. Robotics for natural orifice and single port access surgery, capsule and magnetically actuated robotics and microrobotics are discussed with the aim of elucidating the state of the art. Works on modeling, sensing and control of mechanical architectures of robots for natural orifice and single port access surgery are discussed, followed by a presentation of works on magnetic actuation, sensing and localization for capsule robotics and microrobotics. Finally challenges and open problems in each one of these areas are presented.

Abstract:The developments of medical practices and medical technologies have always progressed concurrently. The relatively recent developments in endoscopic technologies have allowed the realization of the "minimally invasive" form of surgeries. The advancements in robotics facilitate precise surgeries that are often integrated with medical image guidance capability. This in turn has driven the further development of technology to compensate for the unique complexities engendered by this new format and to improve the performance and broaden the scope of the procedures that can be performed. Medical robotics has been a central component of this development due to the highly suitable characteristics that a robotic system can purport, including highly optimizable mechanical conformation and the ability to program assistive functions in medical robots for surgeons to perform safe and accurate minimally invasive surgeries. In addition, combining the robot-assisted interventions with touch-sensing and medical imaging technologies can greatly improve the available information and thus help to ensure that minimally invasive surgeries continue to gain popularity and stay at the focus of modern medical technology development. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of robotic systems for minimally invasive and noninvasive surgeries, precise surgeries, diagnoses, and their corresponding technologies.

Abstract:This topical review discusses recent development and trends on scanning micromirrors for biomedical applications. This also includes a biomedical micro robot for precise manipulations in a limited volume. The characteristics of medical scanning micromirror are explained in general with the fundamental of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for fabrication processes. Along with the explanations of mechanism and design, the principle of actuation are provided for general readers. In this review, several testing methodology and examples are described based on many types of actuators, such as, electrothermal actuators, electrostatic actuators, electromagnetic actuators, pneumatic actuators, and shape memory alloy. Moreover, this review provides description of the key fabrication processes and common materials in order to be a basic guideline for selecting micro-actuators. With recent developments on scanning micromirrors, performances of biomedical application are enhanced for higher resolution, high accuracy, and high dexterity. With further developments on integrations and control schemes, MEMS-based scanning micromirrors would be able to achieve a better performance for medical applications due to small size, ease in microfabrication, mass production, high scanning speed, low power consumption, mechanical stable, and integration compatibility.

Abstract:Abstract Since their early stages of development, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) have shown potential for breakthroughs in the fabrication of medical tools. The miniaturization of various devices using MEMS technology has enabled minimally invasive treatments and in situ measurements. In this paper, we introduce two advancements in MEMS applications in the medical field: (1) microneedle devices for brain activity evaluation, a transdermal drug delivery system, and biological fluid sampling; and (2) miniaturized MEMS sensors for monitoring the conditions inside blood vessels and respiratory organs. In addition, we provide a summary of MEMS sensors used in developing new drugs, detecting vital signs, and other applications.

Abstract:The development of micro/nanorobots and their application in medical treatment holds the promise of revolutionizing disease diagnosis and treatment. In comparison to conventional diagnostic and treatment methods, micro/nanorobots exhibit immense potential due to their small size and the ability to penetrate deep tissues. However, the transition of this technology from the laboratory to clinical applications presents significant challenges. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the research progress in micro/nanorobotics, encompassing biosensors, diagnostics, targeted drug delivery, and minimally invasive surgery. It also addresses the key issues and challenges facing this technology. The fusion of micro/nanorobots with medical treatments is poised to have a profound impact on the future of medicine.

Abstract:Recent technological advances in surgery have resulted in the development of a range of new techniques that have reduced patient trauma, shortened hospitalization, and improved diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcome. Despite the many appreciated benefits of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) compared to traditional approaches, there are still significant drawbacks associated with conventional MIS including poor instrument control and ergonomics caused by rigid instrumentation and its associated fulcrum effect. The use of robot assistance has helped to realize the full potential of MIS with improved consistency, safety and accuracy. The development of articulated, precision tools to enhance the surgeon's dexterity has evolved in parallel with advances in imaging and human-robot interaction. This has improved hand-eye coordination and manual precision down to micron scales, with the capability of navigating through complex anatomical pathways. In this review paper, clinical requirements and technical challenges related to the design of robotic platforms for flexible access surgery are discussed. Allied technical approaches and engineering challenges related to instrument design, intraoperative guidance, and intelligent human-robot interaction are reviewed. We also highlight emerging designs and research opportunities in the field by assessing the current limitations and open technical challenges for the wider clinical uptake of robotic platforms in MIS.

Abstract:With the rapid development of micro/nanomanufacturing technology, a variety of multifunctional micro/nanorobots have emerged. In particular, magnetic actuation-based micro/nanorobots have attracted much interest due to their advantages of untethered contact, remote control, noninvasiveness, and high tissue-penetrating capability. Various magnetic micro/nanorobots have been designed and applied in biomedicine, which indicates the great potential of clinical transformation. This article reviews the new advancements of engineering magnetic micro/nanorobots for versatile biomedical applications, ranging from targeted delivery, minimally invasive surgery, cellular and intracellular measurement, and intelligent sensing to detoxification and antibacterial applications. The controllability, visualization, and biosafety aspects of magnetically manipulated micro/nanorobots are summarized. In particular, the challenges being faced are discussed to outlook future prospective development.

Abstract:Microsurgical techniques have been widely utilized in various surgical specialties, such as ophthalmology, neurosurgery, and otolaryngology, which require intricate and precise surgical tool manipulation on a small scale. In microsurgery, operations on delicate vessels or tissues require high standards in surgeons' skills. This exceptionally high requirement in skills leads to a steep learning curve and lengthy training before the surgeons can perform microsurgical procedures with quality outcomes. The microsurgery robot (MSR), which can improve surgeons' operation skills through various functions, has received extensive research attention in the past three decades. There have been many review papers summarizing the research on MSR for specific surgical specialties. However, an in-depth review of the relevant technologies used in MSR systems is limited in the literature. This review details the technical challenges in microsurgery, and systematically summarizes the key technologies in MSR with a developmental perspective from the basic structural mechanism design, to the perception and human–machine interaction methods, and further to the ability in achieving a certain level of autonomy. By presenting and comparing the methods and technologies in this cutting-edge research, this paper aims to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the current state of MSR research and identify potential directions for future development in MSR.

Abstract:The advent of catheter-based minimally invasive surgical instruments has provided an effective means of diagnosing and treating human disease. However, conventional medical catheter devices are limited in functionalities, hindering their ability to gather tissue information or perform precise treatment during surgery. Recently, electronic catheters have integrated various sensing and therapeutic technologies through micro/nanoelectronics, expanding their capabilities. As micro/nanoelectronic devices become more miniaturized, flexible, and stable, electronic surgical catheters are evolving from simple tools to multiplexed sensing and theranostics for surgical applications. The review on multifunctional electronic surgical catheters is lacking and thus is not conducive to the reader's comprehensive understanding of the development trend in this field. This review covers the advances in multifunctional electronic catheters for precise and intelligent diagnosis and therapy in minimally invasive surgery. It starts with the summary of clinical minimally invasive surgical instruments, followed by the background of current clinical catheter devices for sensing and therapeutic applications. Next, intelligent electronic catheters with integrated electronic components are reviewed in terms of electronic catheters for diagnosis, therapy, and multifunctional applications. It highlights the present status and development potential of catheter-based minimally invasive surgical devices, while also illustrating several significant challenges that remain to be overcome.

Abstract:Robot-assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (RMIS) is a revolutionary breakthrough in the field of surgery in 21st-century clinical medicine, and in recent years it has become the standard of care in Western medicine. It makes highly accurate medical operations possible based on the advantages of traditional minimally invasive surgery, such as reducing patient trauma and accelerating post-operative healing. However, the most advanced robotic-assisted surgical systems available on the market, as exemplified by the da Vinci system, are still not equipped with tactile receptors. In recent years, scientists and engineers have come up with different techniques and ideas, including various forms of tactile sensors, to improve the quality of the process. In this paper, the sensor devices that can be used for RMIS are classified into six different types based on their structural characteristics, and typical examples of them are listed. For some of the sensing structures that are only in the theoretical stage, inferences and explanations are given based on references. And the application directions are summarized as tactile diagnosis and operator sensing. Research in the last decade in both areas of sensing technology is summarized and outlined respectively.

Abstract:Magnetic microrobots are ideal for medical applications owing to their deep tissue penetration, precise control, and flexible movement. After decades of development, various magnetic microrobots have been used to achieve medical functions such as targeted delivery, cell manipulation, and minimally invasive surgery. This review introduces the research status and latest progress in the design and control systems of magnetic medical microrobots from a system integration perspective and summarizes the advantages and limitations of the research to provide a reference for developers. Finally, the future development direction of magnetic medical microrobot design and control systems are discussed.

Abstract:Microneedles array based on micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology is one of important applications in biomedicine and brings a new means in biomedicine field. The prospect for the development of microneedles technology in precision drug injection, clinical monitoring and biochemistry test is and save broad. This paper describes three important applications of MEMS microneedles array in biomedicine field: biomedicine microneedles electrode, transdermal delivery of drugs and fluid extraction, and then summarizes their application elements and recent development. It explains the characteristics of microneedles, which provide painless, effective and save biomedical method in accordance with human requirements. In addition, a series of the fabrication technology of microneedles array is discussed.

Abstract:This paper provides an overview of recent advancements in multifunctional sensing devices for soft medical robotics. The review discusses the need for multimodal monitoring in medical robots for onsite diagnosis and treatment, summarizes the corresponding sensing principles, and benchmarks the pros and cons of these different methods. Advanced manufacturing technologies, along with integration approaches that allow for minimally invasive procedures, are also discussed. Minimally invasive procedures assisted by soft robots for surgery, diagnostics, and drug delivery have unprecedented benefits over traditional solutions from both patient and surgeon perspectives. However, the translation of such technology into commercialization remains challenging. The lack of perception abilities is one of the obstructive factors paramount for a safe, accurate and efficient robot‐assisted intervention. Integrating different types of miniature sensors onto robotic end‐effectors is a promising trend to compensate for the perceptual deficiencies in soft robots. For example, haptic feedback with force sensors helps surgeons to control the interaction force at the tool‐tissue interface, impedance sensing of tissue electrical properties can be used for tumor detection. The last decade has witnessed significant progress in the development of multimodal sensors built on the advancement in engineering, material science and scalable micromachining technologies. This review article provides a snapshot on common types of integrated sensors for soft medical robots. It covers various sensing mechanisms, examples for practical and clinical applications, standard manufacturing processes, as well as insights on emerging engineering routes for the fabrication of novel and high‐performing sensing devices.

Abstract:Micro‐/nanorobots (m‐bots) have attracted significant interest due to their suitability for applications in biomedical engineering and environmental remediation. Particularly, their applications in in vivo diagnosis and intervention have been the focus of extensive research in recent years with various clinical imaging techniques being applied for localization and tracking. The successful integration of well‐designed m‐bots with surface functionalization, remote actuation systems, and imaging techniques becomes the crucial step toward biomedical applications, especially for the in vivo uses. This review thus addresses four different aspects of biomedical m‐bots: design/fabrication, functionalization, actuation, and localization. The biomedical applications of the m‐bots in diagnosis, sensing, microsurgery, targeted drug/cell delivery, thrombus ablation, and wound healing are reviewed from these viewpoints. The developed biomedical m‐bot systems are comprehensively compared and evaluated based on their characteristics. The current challenges and the directions of future research in this field are summarized.

Abstract:This paper presents a review of the current applications of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) in the robotics and industrial applications. MEMS are widely used as actuators or sensors in numerous respects of our daily life as well as automation lines and industrial applications. Intersection of founding new polymers and composites such as silicon and micro manufacturing technologies performing micro-machining and micro-assembly brings about remarkable growth of application and efficacy of MEMS devices. MEMS indicated huge improvement in size reduction, higher reliability, multi-functionality, customized design, and power usage. Demonstration of various devices and technologies utilized in robotics and industrial applications are illustrated in this article along with the use and the role of silicon in the development of the sensors. Some future trends and its perspectives are also discussed.

Abstract:Untethered robots miniaturized to the length scale of millimeter and below attract growing attention for the prospect of transforming many aspects of health care and bioengineering. As the robot size goes down to the order of a single cell, previously inaccessible body sites would become available for high-resolution in situ and in vivo manipulations. This unprecedented direct access would enable an extensive range of minimally invasive medical operations. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the current advances in biome dical untethered mobile milli/microrobots. We put a special emphasis on the potential impacts of biomedical microrobots in the near future. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges and emerging concepts associated with designing such a miniaturized robot for operation inside a biological environment for biomedical applications.
