Abstract:Background: The gut hormones are important in regulating gastrointestinal motility. Disturbances in gastrointestinal motility have been reported in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Reduced endocrine cell density, as revealed by chromogranin A, has been reported in the colon of IBS patients. Aims: To investigate a possible abnormality in the colonic endocrine cells of IBS patients. Methods: A total of 41 patients with IBS according to Rome Criteria III and 20 controls were included in the study. Biopsies from the right and left colon were obtained from both patients and controls during colonoscopy. The biopsies were immunostained for serotonin, peptide YY (PYY), pancreatic polypeptide (PP), entroglucagon, and somatostatin cells. Cell densities were quantified by computerized image analysis. Results: Serotonin and PYY cell densities were reduced in the colon of IBS patients. PP, entroglucagon, and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were too few to enable reliable quantification. Conclusion: The cause of these observations could be primary genetic defect(s), secondary to altered serotonin and/or PYY signaling systems and/or subclinical inflammation. Serotonin activates the submucosal sensory branch of the enteric nervous system and controls gastrointestinal motility and chloride secretion via interneurons and motor neurons. PYY stimulates absorption of water and electrolytes, and inhibits prostaglandin (PG) E2, and vasoactive intestinal peptide, which stimulates intestinal fluid secretion and is a major regulator of the "ileal brake". Although the cause and effect relationship of these findings is difficult to elucidate, the abnormalities reported here might contribute to the symptoms associated with IBS.

Abstract:Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder which is characterized by abdominal pain and disturbed bowel habits. The pathophysiological mechanism is complex and still remains incompletely clear. Alterations at both the central and the peripheral level are thought to contribute to the symptoms of IBS, including psychosocial factors, visceral hypersensitivity and abnormal gastrointestinal motility and secretion. Several gut peptides contribute to the regulation of gastrointestinal function, but little is known about gut hormone secretion in IBS. Methods: We evaluated the concentrations of cholecystokinin (CCK), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), somatostatin, substance P, neuropeptide Y (NPY) in plasma and in sigmoid tissue in 40 patients with IBS and 15 age- and gender-matched controls by using radioimmunoassay. Results: IBS patients had higher plasma level of CCK (p < 0.01), and the level of CCK in the sigmoid was also increased compared with controls (p < 0.05). The levels of somatostatin and substance P in fasting plasma and in the sigmoid were not different between IBS patients and control subjects (p > 0.05), but the levels of VIP in sigmoid tissue or in plasma were higher in IBS patients than in control group (p < 0.01). The NPY levels in both plasma and the sigmoid were significantly lower in IBS patients than in controls (p < 0.05). Plasma NPY level in patients with IBS with diarrhea as a predominant bowel pattern was lower than in patients with IBS with constipation as a predominant bowel pattern. Conclusion: IBS patients have increased levels of CCK and VIP and decreased NPY levels in fasting plasma and sigmoid tissue. These alterations of VIP, CCK and NPY may play a role in the pathogenesis of IBS.
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth in Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Clinical Characteristics, Psychological Factors, and Peripheral Cytokines

Abstract:Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Psychosocial factors and low-grade colonic mucosal immune activation have been suggested to play important roles in the pathophysiology of IBS. In total, 94 patients with IBS and 13 healthy volunteers underwent a 10 g lactulose hydrogen breath test (HBT) with concurrent Tc99m scintigraphy. All participants also completed a face-to-face questionnaire survey, including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Life Event Stress (LES), and general information. Serum tumour necrosis factor-α, interleukin- (IL-) 6, IL-8, and IL-10 levels were measured. The 89 enrolled patients with IBS and 13 healthy controls had no differences in baseline characteristics. The prevalence of SIBO in patients with IBS was higher than that in healthy controls (39% versus 8%, resp.; p=0.026). Patients with IBS had higher anxiety, depression, and LES scores, but anxiety, depression, and LES scores were similar between the SIBO-positive and SIBO-negative groups. Psychological disorders were not associated with SIBO in patients with IBS. The serum IL-10 level was significantly lower in SIBO-positive than SIBO-negative patients with IBS.
67Ga scintigraphy in HIV antibody positive patients; a review of its clinical usefulness.

Abstract:We reviewed the results of 67Ga scintigraphy in HIV antibody positive patients in order to determine how the result affected management. Case records of 37 HIV antibody positive patients undergoing 41 67Ga scintigraphic studies over a 31 month period were examined. New and additional information was provided by 67Ga scintigraphy in 22 studies (53%). In 13 studies (32%) there was a positive effect on patient management. 67Ga scintigraphy was most useful in differentiating Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia from Kaposi's sarcoma in the chest and for the diagnosis of unsuspected lymphoma. Factors which reduced the effectiveness of 67Ga scintigraphy included empirical use of antibiotics in patients with suspected infection and the low specificity of the test.
Elevated vasoactive intestinal peptide concentrations in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract:The aim was to assess the roles of gut hormones and immune dysfunction in irritable bowel. In Study I, rectal mucosal samples examined blindly showed no histological evidence of inflammation in 16 irritable bowel patients compared to 17 healthy controls. The proinflammatory mediators interleukin-1beta and prostaglandin E2 also failed to show evidence of inflammation. Vasoactive intestinal peptide was elevated in irritable bowel (P = 0.01), but substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide, and somatostatin levels were similar to control values. In Study II, 30 irritable bowel patients had elevated (P = 0.002) plasma concentrations of vasoactive intestinal peptide compared to 30 controls, and peptide levels were unrelated to whether the patient's predominant bowel habit was constipation, diarrhea, or both in alternation. In conclusion, no evidence of inflammation was detected in irritable bowel patients, but elevated vasoactive intestinal peptide concentrations were observed in both studies and might represent a potential diagnostic tool for irritable bowel syndrome.

Abstract:Background: IBS and IBD are chronic gastrointestinal (GI) conditions associated with abdominal pain and abnormal bowel habits.Although IBS and IBD share common symptoms, their pathogenesis differs.Whereas IBD symptoms often arise from inflammatory or structural abnormalities, these objective markers are not consistently identified in IBS.Because symptom pathogenesis differs between disorders, we aimed to test whether symptom severity also varies between IBS and IBD.Methods: We compared GI symptoms using items developed for the NIH Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) that assessed frequency, severity, interference, and bother to 3 groups: (1) IBS patients from clinic and community populations, (2) IBD clinic patients, and (3) a U.S. general population (GP) sample selected by a commercial research firm (Cint) to approximate characteristics in the 2010 census.We measured 8 GI symptom domains: gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), disrupted swallowing, nausea/vomiting (N/V), belly pain, diarrhea, constipation, gas/bloating, and fecal incontinence/soling (FI).We measured overall symptom severity by averaging responses to items and transforming linearly to a 0-100 possible range (higher=worse).We compared group differences using analysis of covariance controlling for demographics and GI symptom-specific anxiety (Visceral Sensitivity Index [VSI]).To adjust for multiple comparisons for different symptoms, a p ,0.01 was used.Results: Respondents included 231 with IBS (mean age=44.8yrs; 68%F; 56.3% Caucasian), 190 with IBD (mean age=41.3yrs; 46%F; 58.4% Caucasian) and 1117 from the GP (mean age 45.7; 57%F; 72.7% Caucasian).Mean age, race/ethnicity, and education significantly differed between groups (all p ,0.01).The Table shows differences in GI symptom severity scores between groups.The GP had greater severity of GERD, disrupted swallowing and N/V compared to the patient groups.GERD severity differed among all groups with greatest severity in GP, followed by IBS, and then IBD.GP reported more disrupted swallowing than IBS and greater N/V than IBD.IBS patients reported greater severity of belly pain vs. GP and greater severity of constipation and gas/ bloating vs. GP and IBD.IBD patients had more severe diarrhea than the GP but not IBS.Conclusions: While IBS and IBD are conditions associated with greater lower GI symptom severity compared to the GP, they report less severe upper GI symptoms.Between disease states, IBS patients report numerically worse symptom severity vs. IBD for 7 of 8 GI symptom domains -only diarrhea appeared more severe in IBD.Although IBD is marked by objective inflammatory and anatomic biomarkers, this does not necessarily yield worse symptom severity than IBS -a condition without reliable biomarkers; the converse is true in this study.* P values after controlling for demographics and VSI.Values shown in bold are statistically significant.
An exaggerated sensory component of the gastrocolonic response in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract:Background/aims: Visceral hypersensitivity is a feature of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Postprandial symptoms are common in these patients. The effects of nutrients on colonic perception in IBS are incompletely understood. Subjects: We studied 13 healthy subjects and 16 patients with IBS-eight had diarrhoea predominant (IBS-D) and eight constipation predominant (IBS-C) IBS. Methods: Colonic perception thresholds to balloon distension and viscerosomatic referral pattern were assessed before and after duodenal infusion of lipid or saline, respectively. At the end of the infusions, plasma levels of gastrointestinal peptides were determined. Results: Lipids lowered the thresholds for first sensation, gas, discomfort, and pain in the IBS group but only for gas in the control group. The percent reduction in thresholds for gas and pain after lipids was greater in the IBS and IBS-D groups but not in the IBS-C group compared with controls. IBS patients had an increased area of referred discomfort and pain after lipids compared with before infusion whereas the referral area remained unchanged in controls. No group differences in colonic tone or compliance were observed. In both groups higher levels of cholecystokinin, pancreatic polypeptide, peptide YY, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, and neuropeptide Y were seen after lipids. Motilin levels were higher in patients and differences in the subgroups were observed. Levels of corticotrophin releasing factor were lower in the constipated group than in the diarrhoea group. Conclusions: Postprandial symptoms in IBS patients may be explained in part by a nutrient dependent exaggerated sensory component of the gastrocolonic response.

Abstract:This brief proposes a low-power architecture for a discrete-time (DT) delta-sigma modulator to take full advantages of increased quantization levels. In the proposed architecture, noise-shaped segmentation is applied to both the quantizer and the feedback digital-to-analog converter to maintain a high resolution and a high linearity and, at the same time, keep the hardware complexity low. This leads to a significantly reduced output swing of the integrator to minimize the slewing-related distortion in a DT implementation. The resulting uniform linear settling behavior can tolerate a relatively large settling error without degrading the performance, which greatly relaxes the bandwidth requirement of the op-amp design. The reduced output swing also allows the use of low-gain amplifiers, which is particularly attractive for an advanced technology in which the intrinsic gain of the transistor is degraded. The proposed architecture is analyzed and verified through simulation.
Abnormal small-intestinal endocrine cells in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract:Background: General disturbances in gastrointestinal motility have been reported in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The gastrointestinal tract hormones play an important role in regulating gastrointestinal motility. Aims: To investigate a possible abnormality in the small intestinal endocrine cells of IBS patients. Methods: Included in the study were 41 patients with irritable bowel syndrome according to Rome Criteria III and 42 healthy controls. Duodenal biopsies were obtained from both patients and controls during gastroscopy. The biopsies were immunostained by avidin-biotin-complex method for secretin, CCK, GIP, somatostatin, and serotonin cells. The cell densities were quantified by computerized image analysis. Results: The density of secretin- and CCK-immunoreactive cells in patients with IBS was significantly reduced. The reduction in secretin and CCK cells occurred only in IBS-diarrhea patients, but not in IBS-constipation subtype. Both GIP and somatostatin cell densities were reduced in the duodenum of IBS patients. There was no statistical difference between the subtypes of IBS patients, regarding secretin, CCK, GIP, or somatostatin cell densities. Serotonin cell density was not affected in patients with IBS. Conclusions: The low densities of secretin and CCK cells in IBS-diarrhea patients may cause a functional pancreatic insufficiency as well as inadequate gall emptying, as these hormones stimulate pancreatic bicarbonate and enzyme secretion and CCK stimulates as well gall bladder contraction. Low densities of secretin, GIP, and somatostatin cells in IBS patients might result in a high secretion of gastric acid, as secretin, GIP, and somatostatin inhibit gastric acid secretion.

Abstract:Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder of unknown aetiology for which there is no effective treatment. Although IBS does not increase mortality, it reduces the quality of life and is an economic burden to both the patients themselves and society as a whole. Peptide YY (PYY) is localized in endocrine cells located in the ileum, colon and rectum. The concentration of PYY and the density of PYY cells are decreased in both the colon and rectum but unchanged in the ileum of patients with IBS. The low density of PYY cells in the large intestine may be caused by a decreased number of stem cells and their progeny toward endocrine cells. PYY regulates the intestinal motility, secretion and absorption as well as visceral sensitivity via modulating serotonin release. An abnormality in PYY may therefore contribute to the intestinal dysmotility and visceral hypersensitivity seen in IBS patients. Diet management involving consuming a low-FODMAP diet restores the density of PYY cells in the large intestine and improves abdominal symptoms in patients with IBS. This review shows that diet management appears to be a valuable tool for correcting the PYY abnormalities in the large intestine of IBS patients in the clinic.

Abstract:Background. Disorders in the production of neuroendocrine peptides in the digestive tract can cause changes in, intestinal motility and the formation of visceral hypersensitivity, characteristic of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). From this standpoint, of particular interest is the study of the role of a number of major endocrine cells (EC) of the colon, secreting motilin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, and somatostatin, in IBS. Aims to evaluate the density of ECs with different hormonal activities that secrete motilin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and somatostatin in the mucosa of the sigmoid colon in patients with IBS that occurs with constipation and diarrhea. Materials and methods. 85 patients with IBS were examined. The first group included 44 patients with diarrhea (IBSd), the second group included 41 patients with constipation (IBSc). The comparison group consisted of 36 practically healthy people. The diagnosis of IBS was based on the Rome IV criteria. Patients and healthy people were examined according to a single program, including clinical, instrumental (colonoscopy, ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs), laboratory (clinical blood test, feces for calprotectin and antibodies to gliadin in the presence of diarrhea), morphological and immunohistochemical methods. Results. The clinical picture of IBS corresponded to the classical manifestations of this pathology. Among patients with IBSc, there was a more frequent feeling of incomplete emptying of the intestine after defecation, compared with patients with IBSd (p 0.05). Among patients with IBSd, there was a statistically significant increase in the number of ECs producing motilin and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, as well as a lower density of ECs secreting somatostatin, compared with the control group (p 0.05). In the IBSc group, there was a decrease in the number of ECs producing motilin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and an increase in the number of ECs producing somatostatin, compared with the control group (p 0.05). Conclusions. An increase in the number of cells producing motilin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and a decrease in the number of cells observed for the production of somatostatin in the mucosa of the sigmoid colon is characteristic of the manifestation of IBSd. At the same time, an increase in ECs secreting motilin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and an increase in cellular elements producing somatostatin reveals manifestations of IBSс.
Abnormalities in ileal stem, neurogenin 3, and enteroendocrine cells in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract:Background: This study examined whether the densities of stem- and enteroendocrine cell progenitors are abnormal in the ileum of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and whether any abnormalities in ileal enteroendocrine cells are correlated with abnormalities in stem cells and enteroendocrine cell progenitors. Methods: One hundred and one IBS patients covering all IBS subtypes were recruited, and 39 non-IBS subjects were included as a control group. The patients and controls underwent standard colonoscopies, during which biopsy specimens were obtained from the ileum. The biopsy specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and immunostained for Musashi-1 (Msi-1), neurogenin 3 (NEUROG3), chromogranin A (CgA), serotonin, peptide YY (PYY), oxyntomodulin (enteroglucagon), pancreatic polypeptide, and somatostatin. The immunoreactive cells were quantified by computerized image analysis. Results: The densities of Msi-1, NEUROG3, CgA, and serotonin cells were reduced in all IBS patients and in patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D), mixed-diarrhea-and-constipation IBS (IBS-M), and constipation-predominant (IBS-C) relative to the control subjects. While the PYY cell density was increased in IBS-C relative to controls, it did not differ between control subjects and IBS-D and IBS-M patients. The densities of Msi-1 and NEUROG3 cells were strongly correlated with that of CgA cells. Conclusions: The abnormalities in the ileal enteroendocrine cells appear to be caused by two mechanisms: (1) decreases in the clonogenic activity of the stem cells and in the endocrine-cell progenitors differentiating into enteroendocrine cells, and (2) switching on the expression of PYY and switching off the expression of certain other hormones in other types of the enteroendocrine cells.

Abstract:The identification of anisotropic elastic properties of lamellar bone based on nanoindentation data is an open problem. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a method to estimate the orthotropic elastic constants of human cortical bone secondary osteons using nanoindentation in two orthogonal directions. Since the indentation modulus depends on all elastic constants and, for anisotropic materials, also on the indentation direction, a theoretical model quantifying the indentation modulus from the stiffness tensor of a given material was implemented numerically (Swadener and Pharr, 2001, "Indentation of Elastically Anisotropic Half-Spaces by Cones and Parabolae of Revolution," Philos. Mag. A, 81(2), pp. 447-466). Nanoindentation was performed on 22 osteons of the distal femoral shaft: A new holding system was designed in order to indent the same osteon in two orthogonal directions. To interpret the experimental results and identify orthotropic elastic constants, an inverse procedure was developed by using a fabric-based elastic model for lamellar bone. The experimental indentation moduli were found to vary with the indentation direction and showed a marked anisotropy. The estimated elastic constants showed different degrees of anisotropy among secondary osteons of the same bone and these degrees of anisotropy were also found to be different than the one of cortical bone at the macroscopic level. Using the log-Euclidean norm, the relative distance between the compliance tensors of the estimated mean osteon and of cortical bone at the macroscopic level was 9.69%: Secondary osteons appeared stiffer in their axial and circumferential material directions, and with a greater bulk modulus than cortical bone, which is attributed to the absence of vascular porosity in osteonal properties. The proposed method is suitable for identification of elastic constants from nanoindentation experiments and could be adapted to other (bio)materials, for which it is possible to describe elastic properties using a fabric-based model.

Abstract:In irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), motility disturbances occur from the upper gastrointestinal tract to the distal colon, where regulatory peptides have a wide-spread distribution. Studies on basal and postprandial plasma levels of different gut hormones show that VIP, CCK, and motilin may be closely related to the symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation. In addition, peptide YY and NPY have effects on absorption in the intestine, and some opioid peptides exert actions on colonic motility in IBS patients. Recent studies revealed that gall bladder in IBS has an abnormal sensitivity to CCK-8, indicating that IBS patients has an generalized abnormality of the smooth muscle of the digestive tract. Gut hormones, which act as hormones, neurotransmitters and neuromodulators depending on their releasing site, may therefore play an important role in IBS patients.
Stomach antral endocrine cells in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract:To the best of our knowledge, stomach antral endocrine cells have not previously been investigated in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Thus, in the present study, 76 patients with IBS were examined (designated as IBS-total). Diarrhoea was the predominant symptom in 26 of these patients (IBS-D), while in 21 patients, the predominant symptoms were both diarrhoea and constipation (IBS-M) and in 29 patients the predominant symptom was constipation (IBS-C). Forty-three healthy subjects were enrolled as the controls. Stomach antral biopsy samples obtained from all of the subjects were immunostained using the avidin-biotin-complex method for serotonin, gastrin, somatostatin and serotonin transporter (SERT). The immunopositive cell densities and immunoreactivity intensities were determined by computer-aided image analysis. The density of the serotonin-immunoreactive cells was significantly decreased in the IBS-M patients and increased in the IBS-C patients relative to the controls. The immunoreactivity intensity did not differ significantly between the controls and IBS-total. The density of the gastrin-immunoreactive cells was significantly greater in the IBS-D, IBS-M and IBS-C patients than in the controls. The immunoreactivity intensity of gastrin was significantly greater in the IBS-D patients than in the controls. The density of the somatostatin-immunoreactive cells cells was significantly lower in the IBS-total, IBS-D, IBS-M and IBS-C patients than in the controls. The immunoreactivity intensities of both somatostatin and SERT did not differ significantly between the controls and IBS-total. The increase in gastrin cell density and the decrease in somatostatin cell density in all IBS subtypes may cause high levels of gastric secretion, which may in turn contribute to the high incidence of dyspepsia and gastro-oesophageal reflux observed in patients with IBS.
Use of Methacrylate De-embedding Protocols for In Situ Hybridization on Semithin Plastic Sections with Multiple Detection Strategies

Abstract:New plastic resins are gradually replacing traditional paraffin-embedding in situ hybridization (ISH) strategies. One unique resin that has not been fully investigated or exploited with respect to light microscopic ISH is a methacrylate mixture. The advantage of this resin is its ability to be removed from tissues postsectioning, dramatically increasing hybridization signal compared to that obtained in other plastics. The goal of this study was to evaluate the general applicability of the methacrylate embedding acetone de-embedding (MEADE) technique for ISH investigations. Several high-resolution, high-sensitivity ISH protocols are described, using both end-labeled oligonucleotides and randomly primed DNA probes (200–400 bps), signal amplification by catalyzed reporter deposition (CARD), and chromogenic and fluorescent detection methods. With slight modification, the MEADE ISH technique permitted localization of bacterial symbionts in fragile gill tissue and collagen transcripts in foot tissue of two marine bivalves. MEADE ISH has proved extremely versatile and will likely be suitable for many future applications.
Correlation Between Serum Neuropeptide Y, Substance P, And 5-Ht Expression And Anxiety And Depression In Constipation-Predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome Patients

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation of serum neuropeptide Y, substance P, and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) expression with anxiety and depression in patients with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (C-P IBS). Methods: Between January 2016 and May 2017, 68 patients with C-P IBS, diagnosed and treated in The Second Hospital of Shandong University, were enrolled in this study (observation group). Additionally, 68 concomitant healthy persons receiving physical examinations were enrolled as controls (control group). Serum neuropeptide Y, substance P, and 5-HT expression of all eligible participants were measured with application of Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Anxiety and depression of the two cohorts were evaluated using the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Any correlation of serum neuropeptide Y, substance P, and 5-HT expression with anxiety and depression were elucidated by Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: Compared to the control group, serum substance P expression of the observation group was significantly increased but serum neuropeptide Y and 5-HT expression were remarkably reduced in the observation group (all P<0.05). SAS and SDS scores in the observation group were also considerably higher (both P<0.05). Serum substance P levels in C-P IBS patients with anxiety and depression were strikingly higher, but serum neuropeptide Y and 5-HT levels were remarkably lower than those without anxiety and depression (all P<0.05). Among C-P IBS patients, there was a negative correlation of serum neuropeptide Y levels to SAS and SDS scores (r = -0.624, P = 0.012; r = -0.714; P = 0.005), positive correlation of serum substance P levels to SAS and SDS scores (r = 0.715, P = 0.002; r = 0.675, P = 0.007), and negative correlation of serum 5-HT levels to SAS and SDS scores (r = -0.784, P = 0.001; r = -0.762; P = 0.003). Conclusion: Neuroendocrine changes occurred in most C-P IBS patients. Abnormal levels of serum neuropeptide Y, substance P, and 5-HT might correlate with anxiety and depression in C-P IBS patients.

Abstract:The element contents of wheat from four major wheat-producing regions of China were analyzed and used in multivariate statistical analysis to classify wheat according to geographical origin. The concentrations of 15 elements (Be, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, V, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mo, Cd, Ba, and Th) in 240 samples from the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 harvests were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The analysis of variance and linear discriminant analysis were applied to classify wheat origin, and the effects of region, variety, and harvest year on the element contents were analyzed in this study. It was concluded that the multielement analysis is a promising method to provide reliable origin information for wheat, although the element profiles and discriminant models were affected by wheat varieties, harvest years, and agricultural practices.
