Abstract:We describe some recent work on certain nonlinear elliptic equations from geometry. These include the problem of prescribing scalar curvature on (n), the Yamabe problem on manifolds with boundary, and the best Sobolev inequality on Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:We study fully nonlinear elliptic equations on Hermitian manifolds through blow-up argument and partial uniform ellipticity. We apply our results to draw geometric conclusions on finding conformal Hermitian metrics with prescribed Chern-Ricci curvature functions. By some obstruction from geometric function theory, our assumptions are almost sharp.

Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:In a recent paper, we established optimal Liouville-type theorems for conformally invariant second-order elliptic equations in the Euclidean space. In this work, we prove an optimal Liouville-type theorem for these equations in the half-Euclidean space.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a broad class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations on Hermitian manifolds. On one hand, under the optimal structural assumptions we derive $C^{2,\alpha}$-estimate for solutions of the equations on closed Hermitian manifolds. On the other hand, we treat the Dirichlet problem. In both cases, we prove the existence theorems with unbounded condition.

Abstract:Nonlinear analysis has played a prominent role in the recent developments in geometry and topology. The study of the Yang-Mills equation and its cousins gave rise to the Donaldson invariants and more recently, the Seiberg-Witten invariants. Those invariants have enabled us to prove a number of striking results for low dimensional manifolds, particularly, 4-manifolds. The theory of Gromov-Witten invariants was established by using solutions of the Cauchy-Riemann equation. These solutions are often refered as pseudo-holomorphic maps which are special minimal surfaces studied long in geometry. It is certainly not the end of applications of nonlinear partial differential equations to geometry. In this talk, we will discuss some recent progress on nonlinear partial differential equations in geometry. We will be selective, partly because of my own interest and partly because of recent applications of nonlinear equations. There are also talks in this ICM to cover some other topics of geometric analysis by R. Bartnik, B. Andrew, P. Li and X.X. Chen, etc.

Abstract:We derive an a priori real Hessian estimate for solutions of a large family of geometric fully non-linear elliptic equations on compact Hermitian manifolds, which is independent of a lower bound for the right-hand side function. This improves on the estimates of Székelyhidi [57] and additionally applies to elliptic equations with a degenerate right-hand side. As an application, we establish the optimal C1,1 regularity of envelopes of (θ,m)-subharmonic functions on compact Hermitian manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper we prove gradient estimates of both elliptic and parabolic types, specifically, of Souplet-Zhang, Hamilton and Li-Yau types for positive smooth solutions to a class of nonlinear parabolic equations involving the Witten or drifting Laplacian on smooth metric measure spaces. These estimates are established under various curvature conditions and lower bounds on the generalised Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor and find utility in proving elliptic and parabolic Harnack-type inequalities as well as general Liouville-type and other global constancy results. Several applications and consequences are presented and discussed.

Abstract:We obtain existence results for a class of fully nonlinear Yamabe-type problems on non-compact manifolds, addressing both the so-called positive and negative cases. We also give explicit examples of manifolds with warped product ends and asymptotically flat ends satisfying the hypotheses of our theorems.

Abstract:We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for solving a general class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations on closed Riemannian or hermitian manifolds, including both hessian and hessian quotient equations. It settles an open problem of Li and Urbas. Such a condition is based on an analytic slope invariant analogous to the slope stability and the Nakai-Moishezon criterion in complex geometry. As an application, we solve the non-constant $J$-equation on both hermitian manifolds and singular Kähler spaces.

Abstract:We give sharp C^2,α estimates for solutions of some fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations in complex geometry and almost complex geometry, assuming a bound on the Laplacian of the solution. We also prove the analogous results to complex Monge–Ampère equations with conical singularities. As an application, we obtain a local estimate for Calabi–Yau equation in almost complex geometry. We also improve the C^2,α regularities and estimates for viscosity solutions to some uniformly elliptic and parabolic equations. All our results are optimal regarding the Hölder exponent.

Abstract:In this work we establish a gradient bound and Liouville-type theorems for solutions to Quasi-linear elliptic equations on compact Riemannian Manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Also, we provide a local splitting theorem when the inequality in the gradient bound becomes equality at some point. Moreover, we prove a Harnack-type inequality and an ABP estimate for the gradient of solutions in domains contained in the manifold.
