Abstract:g-C3N4 is a visible-light photocatalyst with a suitable band gap and good stability. Moreover, g-C3N4 is considered to be earth-abundant, which makes it an appealing photocatalyst. However, due to its small specific surface area, low utilization of visible light, and high photogenerated electron-hole pair recombination rate, the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 remains unsatisfactory. In this work, a highly efficient nonmetallic photocatalyst, i.e., g-C3N4 doped with uracil (denoted U-C3N4) was successfully developed. Based on the various characterizations and calculations, it is shown that the triazine group in g-C3N4 is replaced with the diazine group in uracil. This occurrence leads to the formation of a new electron-transfer pathway between triazine groups, which can promote the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. Concurrently, due to the ultrathin structure of the as-prepared U-C3N4, the material possessed a larger specific surface area than pristine g-C3N4, which can provide more active sites. Furthermore, the transfer pathway between the electron and hole was also shortened, and the recombination of the electron and hole was inhibited. According to the results, an optimal hydrogen evolution rate of 31.7 mol h(-1) g(-1) was achieved by U-C3N4, which is 5.1 times higher as compared to that achieved by pristine g-C3N4 (6.26 mol h(-1) g(-1)). For the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B, the reaction rate constant of U-C3N4 (11.3 x 10(-2) min(-1)) is about 5.5 times that of g-C3N4 (2.07 x 10(-2) min(-1)). Furthermore, the uracil-doped catalyst was also able to demonstrate good stability after five successive runs.
Metal organic framework derived heteroatoms and cyano (CN) group co-decorated porous g-C3N4 nanosheets for improved photocatalytic H2 evolution and uranium(VI) reduction

Abstract:The introduction of heteroatoms and functional groups in g-C3N4 generally has great advantages in enhancing the photocatalytic performance. In this work, the heteroatoms (Zn + C) and cyano (CN) group co-decorated porous g-C3N4 nanosheets (DCNNS) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized through direct calcination of the mixed urea and metal-organic frameworks. The optimized DCNNS displayed a maximum H2 evolution rate of ~484.09 μmol/h with a quantum efficiency of ~3.43% at 420 nm, and the photocatalytic U(VI) reduction activity was improved by ~6.09 times. The enhanced photocatalytic performance could be ascribed to following benefits: (1) the modified DCNNS shared the two-dimensional layered structure of g-C3N4, and the massive nanopores in the nanosheets provided more reaction sites and diffusion channels for accelerated mass transfer; (2) the formation of cyano group greatly broadened the light response range and also acted as strong electron-withdrawing group for improving the carrier separation rate; (3) heteroatoms doping modulated the band gap, increased the electric conductivity, promoted the carrier separation and transport, and prolonged the electron lifetime to enhance photocatalytic performance. This work suggested that the heteroatoms and functional groups co-decoration could significantly improve the performance of g-C3N4-based photocatalysts and hold great potential to be further explored for energy and environmental applications.
Carbon ring and molecular scaffold co-doped g-C3N4 heterostructural nanosheets for highly efficient hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Copolymerization is an efficient method to modulate the intrinsic properties of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). Herein, carbon ring and stereo molecular scaffold co-doped g-C3N4 heterostrcutural nanosheets are constructed for simultaneously enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under ordinary pressure. The carbon ring changes the in-plane connection of g-C3N4 by the sp2-hybridized CN bonds, extending the delocalization of π electrons. The stereo molecular scaffold loses the interlayer stacking of bulk g-C3N4 for easier exfoliation. The synergistic effect of the above two aspects can greatly improve the photocatalytic performance of AGCN. After thermal exfoliation, the highest photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity of A0.2G0.3CN-E sample is 12.9 times higher than that of MCN. This work provides a strategy to design g-C3N4 photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic activity by using synergistic effect.

Abstract:Converting solar energy into renewable clean fuels of hydrogen via photocatalytic water splitting provides the most prospective strategy for tackling the energy and environmental issues. The performance of most photocatalysts is closely related to the intrinsic activity and active edge sites; however, simultaneously regulating them to realize synergic effects remains significant scientific and technological challenge. Here, we report an elaborate design and synthesis of porous carbon nitride nanocages (CN-C) with abundant π-electron densities by a novel host–guest supramolecular self-assembly strategy, overcoming one of the major challenges of traditional copolymeration method, i.e., the required highly matched chemical structure and physical properties of the π-electron-rich monomers to nitrogen-rich monomers. This strategy primarily depends on the cooperation of the host supramolecular precursor growth and the self-regulation of guest supermolecules to compensate the inherent shortage of each component. Interestingly, the structural topology and electron densities of CN-C are found to be easily modulated by only varying the amount of urea. Benefiting from the synergic effects of hierarchically porous structures with enriched active sites and excellent accessibility, increased abundant π-electron densities and improved visible-light absorption, the CN-C nanocages exhibit remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity under visible light exposure with H2 generation rate of 1135 μmol h−1g−1, which is 19 times higher than that of pristine CN (59.8 μmol h−1g−1). This powerful strategy provides a profound molecular-level insight into the control of morphology and π-electron densities within carbon-based materials.

Abstract:Enhancing the separation and transfer of photogenerated carries is vital for improving the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ). Herein, a carbon-rich g-C 3 N 4 with nitrogen vacancies (CCN4) was constructed by incorporating the biochar into g-C 3 N 4 during a thermal polymerization in N 2 atmosphere. The doped carbon atoms replaced the bridged nitrogen and increased the delocalization π states. The synergy of the enhanced π states and nitrogen vacancy favored to narrow the bandgap and accelerate the charge separation and migration in catalyst. Meanwhile, the CCN4 catalyst had a favorable kinetics for HER with simpler steps and lower energy barrier than the PCN sample, in which H 2 production from *H is prior to OH generation. The CCN4 catalyst exhibited excellent HER activity with a hydrogen evolution rate of 3342.4 μmol g −1 h −1 with 0.5 wt% cocatalyst Pt, which was 5.1 times higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 (PCN). Additionally, CCN4 exhibited good resistance to salt with the concentration near natural seawater, showing the further improved hydrogen evolution rate of 3808.8 μmol g −1 h −1 . The findings reported in this work shed light on a biochar-tailored protocol to control the defects of g-C 3 N 4 and optimize its intrinsic electronic properties and photocatalytic HER.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has emerged as a remarkably promising photocatalyst for addressing environmental and energy issues; however, it exhibits only moderate photocatalytic activity because of its low specific surface area and high recombination of carriers. Preparation of crystalline g-C3N4 by the molten salt method has proven to be an effective method to improve the photocatalytic activity. However, crystalline g-C3N4 prepared by the conventional molten salt method exhibits a less regular morphology. Herein, highly crystalline g-C3N4 hollow spheres (CCNHS) were successfully prepared by the molten salt method using cyanuric acid-melamine as a precursor. The higher crystallization of the CCNHS samples not only repaired the structural defects at the surface of the CCNHS samples but also established a built-in electric field between heptazine-based g-C3N4 and triazine-based g-C3N4. The hollow structure improved the level of light energy utilization and increased the number of active sites for photocatalytic reactions. Because of the above characteristics, the as-prepared CCNHS samples simultaneously realized photocatalytic hydrogen evolution with the degradation of the plasticizer bisphenol A. This research offers a new perspective on the structural optimization of supramolecular self-assembly.

Abstract:Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) is regarded as a most promising photocatalyst, but the severe recombination of electron-hole pairs restrains its photocatalytic performance. Herein, a carbon nitride gradient homojunction with donor–acceptor (D-A) structure was successfully synthesized. The D-A structure promoted the electron delocalization, while gradient K intercalation helped establish a strong internal electric field from the interior to the surface. They synergistically inhibited the recombination of electron-hole pairs and led to fast charge transfer and much enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) performance. This work developed a novel method to promote the charge carrier transfer in carbon nitrides, which could provide a new perspective for the design and development of carbon nitride-based homojunctions in the application of PHE.

Abstract:The self-assembled carbon nitride quantum dots (CNQDs) has been largely advanced owing to the structure-relative photocatalytic activities, especially its electronic structure, which can be regulated by defects, functional groups, and doping. However, there are still issues such as wide band gaps for the assembles and severe recombination of photoinduced charges. Herein, we demonstrate the self-assembly of CNQDs into fusiform hollow superstructures (CNFHs), induced by hydrogen bonding between the terminal functional groups (–OH, –COOH, and –NH 2 ). During the top-down assembly process, the hydrogen bonding dominates and initiates lateral cross-linking between adjacent CNQDs, which further twist into fusiform hollow structures. Benefitted greatly from the ultrathin and hollow nature of the superstructure that provides more exposed active sites, coupled with the introduction of phosphorus doping atoms into the framework induced narrowed band gap, CNFHs exhibits an 18-fold higher activity than the bulk counterpart toward photocatalytic hydrogen evolution after loading the CoP co-catalyst. Abstract:Carbon nitride (C3N4) holds great promise for photocatalytic H2O2 production from oxygen reduction. In spite of great research efforts, they still suffer from low catalytic efficiency primarily limited by the fast recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. In this work, we report the multiscale structural engineering of C3N4 to significantly improve its optoelectronic properties and consequently photocatalytic performance. The product consists of porous spheres with high surface areas, abundant nitrogen defects, and alkali metal doping. Under visible light irradiation, our catalyst shows a remarkable H2O2 production rate of 3,080 µmol·g−1·h−1, which is more than 10 times higher than that of bulk C3N4 and exceeds those of most other C3N4-based photocatalysts. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits great stability, and can continuously work for 15 h without obvious activity decay under visible light irradiation, eventually giving rise to a high H2O2 concentration of ca. 45 mM.

Abstract:Here a facile hydrothermal method was developed to prepare heterogeneous photocatalyst constructed by decorating nanorod-assembled orbicular WO3·0.5 H2O on the surface of porous carbon nitride nanosheets. By integrating two martials with synergetic effect according to their bandgap structure, as-obtained catalyst exhibits well-suppressed recombination of the photoexcited carriers by formation of Z-scheme bandgap structure. It, together with the increased surface areas, contributes to the significantly improved photocatalytic performance. As a result, the heterogeneous photocatalyst reveals a hydrogen generation rate of 3100 µmol·g−1·h−1 under visible light irradiation, accounting for an approximately 16 times higher than that of pristine graphite carbon nitride. Accordingly, as proposed strategy provides a new opportunity to explore advanced catalysts with superior properties for renewable energy utilization.

Abstract:The use of photocatalysis to address environmental pollution and energy shortage is an attractive choice. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel 3D interconnected porous carbon-rich g-C3N4 catalyst via facile thermal polymerization to enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production and photodegradation of dye contaminants. Enhanced hydrogen evolution (1956.23 μmol g−1 h−1) and photocatalytic RhB degradation (96.74%) efficiency were achieved with the as-obtained catalysts. Based on the photocatalytic experimental data and characterization analyses, an enhancement mechanism was proposed. The 3D interconnected porous structure endowed the g-C3N4 with numerous active sites and a large specific surface area, and the carbon modification facilitated the separation and transfer of the photoinduced charge carriers. Nanoshape engineering and the carbon-rich structure showed a synergetic effect in increasing photocatalytic performance. This study offers an applicable methodology for the exploitation of an economical catalyst to alleviate environmental pollution and energy shortages.

Abstract:Polymeric carbon nitride (C3N4) has emerged as the most promising candidate for metal-free photocatalysts but is plagued by low activity due to the poor quantum efficiency and low specific surface area. Exfoliation of bulk crystals into ultrathin nanosheets has proven to be an effective and widely used strategy for enabling high photocatalytic performances; however, this process is complicated, time-consuming, and costly. Here, we report a simple bottom-up method to synthesize porous few-layer C3N4, which involves molecule self-assembly into layered precursors, alcohol molecules intercalation, and subsequent thermal-induced exfoliation and polycondensation. The as-prepared few-layer C3N4 expose more active sites and greatly enhance the separation of charge carriers, thus exhibiting a 26-fold higher hydrogen evolution activity than bulk counterpart. Furthermore, we find that both the high activity and selectivity for the oxidative coupling of amines to imines can be obtained under visible light that surpass those of other metal-free photocatalysts so far.

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) depends to a large extent on its morphology and electronic band structure. In order to design a photocatalyst with suitable structural property and high efficiency of photo-generated carrier separation, herein, the pyrimidine doped g-C 3 N 4 is prepared by a conventional one-pot copolymerization of urea and 2,4,6-Triaminopyrimidine (TAP). Such TAP organic molecule can not only regulate the electronic structure of conjugated system and distort heptazine units, but also affect the polymerization of precursor urea. As expected, the optimized photocatalyst shows a high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of 453 μmol·h −1 under visible light irradiation , which is 4.41 times over that of pure g-C 3 N 4 . Such enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the introduction of pyrimidine ring which facilitates the electrons delocalization in the in-plane structure, enlarges the specific surface area, and broadens the visible light absorption range.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to high value-added fuels and chemicals is a promising strategy for alleviating both energy and environmental crises. However, the poor CO2 adsorption and activation ability seriously restrict the CO2 photoreduction activity of metal-free carbon nitride (C3N4), which is an emerging material for photocatalysis applications. In this paper, cobalt (Co) atomic clusters were modified on the surface of hierarchical urchin-like hollow C3N4 nanotubes by NaBH4 reduction, which endowed the as-designed Co atomic clusteranchored and B-doped C3N4 (Co@B-HCN) catalyst with strong CO2 activation and CO2 photoreduction ability. Theoretical calculations and in situ characterization confirmed that the Co atomic clusters anchoring enabled the change in the bond length/angle of adsorbed CO2 molecules, as well as the change from a linear model to a bending model. This could enhance the CO2 adsorption and activation, which played a vital role in reducing the energy barrier of CO2-to-CO reaction. In addition, the construction of the hierarchical urchin-like nanostructure, the anchoring of Co atomic clusters, and the doping of B favored the surface adsorption and charge separation. Attributed to the above merits, the CO yield of Co@B-HCN photocatalyst reaches 157.51 mu mol.g(-1).h(-1), which is approximately 22 times that of bulk C3N4. This work provides an insight for the surface engineering of C3N4 photocatalysts to realize high-performance photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Their activity depends on band alignment and interfacial configurations between two semiconductors for charge carrier kinetics and the effective active sites for photochemical reactions. Herein, a two-dimensional (2D) graphitic carbon nitride/N-doped carbon (C3N4/NC) photocatalyst is synthesized by a gas template (NH4Cl)-assisted thermal condensation method. C3N4/NC has the synthetic merits of a direct Z-scheme heterojunction, 2D-2D interfacial contact, and enhanced specific surface area to improve charge separation kinetics and provide abundant active sites for photochemical reaction. It exhibits an over 46-fold increase of the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate compared to bulk C3N4 under visible light illumination. This work demonstrates the great potential of 2D Z-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalysis and will inspire more related work in the future.
Achieving efficient incorporation of electron-withdrawing sites into carbon nitride nanosheets for boosting hydrogen generation

Abstract:There is an acute demand for the development of high-performance photocatalysts for large-scale green H 2 production using solar energy. To address this challenge, a novel approach has been proposed for the fabrication of high-performance 0D/2D carbon quantum dot/C 3 N 4 nanosheet heterojunction (CQD/CNN) photocatalytic materials using a tandem synthesis strategy of carboxylated CQD-induced hydrothermal-pyrolysis. The incorporation of CQD into the synthesis of CNN significantly reduces its thickness, making the CQD/CNN low to 2.5 nm, which is a noteworthy one thirty-sixth in height of bulk CNN. The carboxylated CQD play a crucial role in regulating the proportion of oxygen-containing surface functional groups of CQD/CNN. The CQD/CNN heterojunction shows exceptional H 2 production rates and demonstrated the ability to convert O 2 into H 2 O 2 . The H 2 production rate of CQD/CNN is gained to be 54.50 mmol g −1 under continuous 3.5 h visible light irradiation, which is a remarkable seven-fold enhancement in performance over bulk CNN. Moreover, the CQD/CNN photocatalyst achieves a maximum H 2 O 2 concentration of 0.763 mmol/L, which is sixteen times higher than that of pure CNN (0.0475 mmol/L). Through elucidating the relationships between morphological/structural modulation and photocatalytic capability, the CO/C–O ratio is found to have the greatest impact on performance, indicating that the electron-withdrawing sites of CQD/CNN can be augmented by incorporating carboxylated CQD, and the electron-withdrawing group can enhance electron conduction and make electron transfer easier to occur, thereby improving the performance of the heterojunctions. Our findings provide a comprehensive framework for achieving desirable photocatalytic properties of C 3 N 4 materials through electron-withdrawing functional group regulation.

Abstract:Establishing an effective charge transfer mechanism in carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to enhance its photocatalytic activity remains a limiting nuisance. Herein, the combination design of a single Cu atom with hollow g-C3N4 nanospheres (Cu-N3 structure) has been proven to offer significant opportunities for this crucial challenge. Moreover, this structure endows two pathways for charge transfer in the reaction, namely, the N atoms in the three-dimensional planar structure are only bonded with a single Cu atom, and charge transfer occurs between the plane and the layered structure due to the bending of the interlayered g-C3N4 hollow nanospheres. Notably, Cu-N3 and hollow nanosphere structures have been certified to greatly enhance the efficiency of photogenerated carrier separation and transfer between the layers and planes by ultrafast spectral analysis. As a result, this catalyst possesses unparalleled photocatalytic efficiency. Specifically, the hydrogen production rate up to 2040 μmol h−1 g−1, which is 51 times that of pure C3N4 under visible light conditions. The photocatalytic degradation performance of tetracycline and oxidation performance of benzene is also expressed, with a degradation rate of 100%, a conversion of 97.3% and a selectivity of 99.9%. This work focuses on the structure-activity relationship to provide the possibilities for the development of potential photocatalytic materials.
