Abstract:The Perron--Frobenius theorem in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces can be breifly stated as follows: Given a Hilbert cone in a real Hilbert space, a bounded positive self-adjoint operator $A$ is ergodic with respect to this cone if and only if the maximum eigenvalue $\|A\|$ of $A$ is simple, and the corresponding eigenvector is strictly positive with respect to this cone. This paper addresses the inverse problem of the Perron--Frobenius theorem: Does there exist a Hilbert cone such that a given bounded positive self-adjoint operator $A$ becomes ergodic when its maximum eigenvalue $\|A\|$ is simple? We provide an affirmative answer to this question in this paper. Furthermore, we conduct a detailed analysis of a specialized Hilbert cone introduced to obtain this result. Additionally, we provide an illustrative example of an application of the obtained results to the heat semigroup generated by the magnetic Schrödinger operator

Abstract:We consider finite-dimensional real vector spaces $X$ ordered by a closed cone $X_+$ with non-empty interior and study eventual nonnegativity of matrix semigroups $(e^{tA})_{t \ge 0}$ with respect to this cone. Our first contribution is the observation that, for general cones, one needs to distinguish between different notions of eventual nonnegativity: (i) uniform eventual nonnegativity means that $e^{tA}$ maps $X_+$ into $X_+$ for all sufficiently large times $t$; (ii) individual eventual nonnegativity means that for each $x \in X_+$ the vector $e^{tA}x$ is in $X_+$ for all $t$ larger than an $x$-dependent time $t_0$; and (iii) weak eventual nonnegativity means that for each $x \in X_+$ and each functional $x'$ in the dual cone $X'_+$ the value $\langle x', e^{tA} x \rangle$ is in $[0,\infty)$ for all $t$ larger than an $x$- and $x'$-dependent time $t_0$. Until now, only the first of these notions has been studied in the literature. We demonstrate by examples that, somewhat surprisingly for finite-dimensional spaces, all three notions are different. Our second contribution is to show that typical Perron-Frobenius like properties remain valid under the weakest of the above notions. Third, we study a strengthened form of the above mentioned concepts, namely eventual positivity. We prove that uniform, individual and weak versions of this property are - in contrast to the nonnegative case - equivalent, and that they can be characterized by spectral properties.

Abstract:We investigate when the algebraic numerical range is a $C$-spectral set in a Banach algebra. While providing several counterexamples based on classical ideas as well as combinatorial Banach spaces, we discuss positive results for matrix algebras and provide an absolute constant in the case of complex $2\times2$-matrices with the induced $1$-norm. Furthermore, we discuss positive results for infinite-dimensional Banach algebras, including the Calkin algebra.

Abstract:A classical problem posed in 1992 by Huijsmans and de Pagter asks whether, for every positive operator on a Banach lattice with spectrum , the inequality holds true. While the problem remains unsolved in its entirety, a positive solution is known in finite dimensions. In the broader context of ordered Banach spaces, Drnovšek provided an infinite-dimensional counterexample. In this note, we demonstrate the existence of finite-dimensional counterexamples, specifically on the ice cream cone and on a polyhedral cone in . On the other hand, taking inspiration from the notion of -isometries, we establish that each counterexample must contain a Jordan block of size at least .

On the $A$-spectrum for $A$-bounded operator on von-Neumann algebras

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{M}$ be a von Neumann algebra and let $A$ be a nonzero positive element of $\mathfrak{M}$. By $\sigma_A(T) $ and $r_A(T)$ we denote the $A$-spectrum and the $A$-spectral radius of $T\in\mathfrak{M}^A$, respectively. In this paper, we show that $\sigma(PTP, P\mathfrak{M} P)\subseteq \sigma_A(T)$. Sufficient conditions for the equality $\sigma_A(T)=\sigma(PTP, P\mathfrak{M} P)$ to be true are presented. Also, we show that $\sigma_A(T)$ is finite for any $T\in\mathfrak{M}^A$ if and only if $A$ is in the socle of $\mathfrak{M}$. Next , we consider the relationship between elements $S$ and $T\in\mathfrak{M}^A$ that satisfy one of the following two conditions: (1) $\sigma_A(SX)=\sigma_A(TX)$ for all $X\in\mathfrak{M}^A$, (2) $r_A(SX)= r_A(TX)$ for all $X\in\mathfrak{M}^A$. Finally, a Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko's theorem for the $A$-spectrum is derived.% Finally, we introduce and study the notion of the $A$-approximate point spectrum for element of $X\in\mathfrak{M}^A$.

Abstract:It is established that the relationships between Weyl's theorem, Browder's theorem, generalized Weyl's theorem and generalized Browder's theorem in a semiprime Banach algebra . We prove that if the commutant of contains a left or right injective quasinilpotent element, then f ( a ) satisfies Weyl's theorem for f belongs to , the set of analytic functions on a neighborhood of . It is shown that the accumulation points of the spectrum of an element in are invariant under any commuting perturbation f such that for some . This result provides a positive answer to Question 2.8 in (Linear Multilinear Algebra 64(2):247–257, 2016), and it is then applied to investigate the perturbations of Weyl's theorem and generalized Weyl's theorem. It is also shown that if a is a hyponormal element (that is, ) in a algebra and , then f ( a ) satisfies Weyl's theorem. If additionally is primitive then f ( a ) obeys generalized Weyl's theorem. We also consider some other interesting properties of hyponormal elements in C* algebras, including simply polaroidness, topological divisor of zero, self-adjointness of the spectral projection with respect to , and the spectral mapping theorem of the Weyl spectrum.

Abstract:We prove sufficient conditions for Hausdorff convergence of the spectra of sequences of closed operators defined on varying Hilbert spaces and converging in norm-resolvent sense, i.e. $\|J_\varepsilon(1+A_\varepsilon)^{-1} - (1+A)^{-1}J_\varepsilon\|\to 0$ as $\varepsilon\to 0$, where $J_\varepsilon$ is a suitable identification operator between the domains of the operators. This is an extension of results of [Mugnolo-Nittka-Post(2013)], who proved absence of spectral pollution for sectorial operators.

Abstract:We prove that if an $n\times n$ matrix defined over ${\mathbb Q}_p$ (or more generally an arbitrary complete, discretely-valued, non-Archimedean field) satisfies a certain congruence property, then it has a strictly maximal eigenvalue in ${\mathbb Q}_p$, and that iteration of the (normalized) matrix converges to a projection operator onto the corresponding eigenspace. This result may be viewed as a $p$-adic analogue of the Perron-Frobenius theorem for positive real matrices.

Commutativity and orthogonality of similarity orbits in Banach algebras

Abstract:For a semisimple unital Banach algebra $A$ over $\mathbb{C}$, and elements $a,b\in A,$ we show that the similarity orbits, $\mathrm{orb}(a)$ and $\mathrm{orb}(b)$, over the principal component of the invertible group of $A$ commute precisely when there is at least one nonzero complex number not belonging to the spectrum of any product $a^\prime b^\prime$ -- where $(a^\prime,b^\prime)\in\mathrm{orb}(a)\times\mathrm{orb}(b)$. In this case, the polynomially convex hull of the spectra of the $a^\prime b^\prime$ is constant. When $\mathrm{orb}(a)=\mathrm{orb}(b)$, then $a$ is central under the aforementioned assumption -- and the result then generalizes part of an old theorem due to J. Zemánek. We show further that the two classical characterizations of commutative Banach algebras via the spectral radius can be algebraically localized in the sense of `local' implies `global'. Thereafter, in Section 3, we give a (somewhat weaker) localization of the above situation involving spectral perturbation on small neighborhoods in a similarity orbit. Finally, we apply the above results to algebraic elements and idempotents in particular, so that orthogonality of similarity orbits of two idempotents is equivalent to a pair of spectral radius properties. To conclude with, a couple of localization theorems specific to idempotents and algebraic elements are presented. Similar statements to all of the above hold if $ a^\prime b^\prime $ is replaced by $ a^\prime + b^\prime $, $ a^\prime - b^\prime $, or $ a^\prime + b^\prime-a^\prime b^\prime $.

Stability criteria for positive semigroups on ordered Banach spaces

Abstract:We consider generators of positive $C_0$-semigroups and, more generally, resolvent positive operators $A$ on ordered Banach spaces and seek for conditions ensuring the negativity of their spectral bound $s(A)$. Our main result characterizes $s(A) < 0$ in terms of so-called \emph{small-gain conditions} that describe the behaviour of $Ax$ for positive vectors $x$. This is new even in case that the underlying space is an $L^p$-space or a space of continuous functions. We also demonstrate that it becomes considerably easier to characterize the property $s(A) < 0$ if the cone of the underlying Banach space has non-empty interior or if the essential spectral bound of $A$ is negative. To treat the latter case, we discuss a counterpart of a Krein-Rutman theorem for resolvent positive operators. When $A$ is the generator of a positive $C_0$-semigroup, our results can be interpreted as stability results for the semigroup, and as such, they complement similar results recently proved for the discrete-time case. In the same vein, we prove a Collatz--Wielandt type formula and a logarithmic formula for the spectral bound of generators of positive semigroups.

Limit Operators, Compactness and Essential Spectra on Bounded Symmetric Domains

Abstract:This paper is a follow-up to a recent article about the essential spectrum of Toeplitz operators acting on the Bergman space over the unit ball. As mentioned in the said article, some of the arguments can be carried over to the case of bounded symmetric domains and some cannot. The aim of this paper is to close the gaps to obtain comparable results for general bounded symmetric domains. In particular, we show that a Toeplitz operator on the Bergman space $A^p_{\nu}$ is Fredholm if and only if all of its limit operators are invertible. Even more generally, we show that this is in fact true for all band-dominated operators, an algebra that contains the Toeplitz algebra. Moreover, we characterize compactness and explain how the Berezin transform comes into play. In particular, we show that a bounded linear operator is compact if and only if it is band-dominated and its Berezin transform vanishes at the boundary. For $p = 2$ "band-dominated" can be replaced by "contained in the Toeplitz algebra".

Abstract:We show that if $G$ is amenable and $A\subseteq G$ has positive upper Banach density, then there is an identity neighborhood $B$ in the Bohr topology on $G$ that is almost contained in $AA^{-1}$ in the sense that $B\backslash AA^{-1}$ has upper Banach density $0$. This generalizes the abelian case (due to Følner) and the countable case (due to Beiglböck, Bergelson, and Fish). The proof is indirectly based on local stable group theory in continuous logic. The main ingredients are Grothendieck's double-limit characterization of relatively weakly compact sets in spaces of continuous functions, along with results of Ellis and Nerurkar on the topological dynamics of weakly almost periodic flows.

Abstract:Let $ A$ be a complex unital Banach algebra. An element $a \in A$ is said to be Hermitian, if $ \| \exp (ita) \| =1$ for all $t\in R$. In the case of the algebra of bounded linear operators in a Hilbert space this Hermitian property agrees with the ordinary selfadjointness. If $a \in A$ is Hermitian, then $|a|=||a||$, where $|a|$ denotes the spectral radius of $a$. A function $F: R\to \C$ is called the universal symbol if $ \|| F(a)||= |F(a)|$\ for each $ A$ and all Hermitian $a\in A$. We characterize universal symbols in terms of positive definite functions.

Abstract:In an earlier paper of mine relating vector bundles and Gromov-Hausdorff distance for ordinary compact metric spaces, it was crucial that the Lipschitz seminorms from the metrics satisfy a strong Leibniz property. In the present paper, for the now non-commutative situation of matrix algebras converging to the sphere (or to other spaces) for quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance, we show how to construct suitable seminorms that also satisfy the strong Leibniz property. This is in preparation for making precise certain statements in the literature of high-energy physics concerning "vector bundles" over matrix algebras that "correspond" to monopole bundles over the sphere. We show that a fairly general source of seminorms that satisfy the strong Leibniz property consists of derivations into normed bimodules. For matrix algebras our main technical tools are coherent states and Berezin symbols.

Semialgebraicity of the convergence domain of an algebraic power series

Abstract:Given a power series in finitely many variables that is algebraic over the corresponding polynomial ring over a subfield of the reals, we show that its convergence domain is semialgebraic over the real closure of the subfield. This gives in particular that the convergence radius of a univariate Puiseux series that is algebraic in the above sense belongs to the real closure or is infinity.

An effective version of Fekete's theorem

Abstract:A classical result of Fekete gives necessary conditions on a compact set in the complex plane so that it contains infinitely many sets of conjugate algebraic integers. We prove an effective version of Fekete's theorem in terms of a height function. As an application, we give a lower bound on the growth of the leading coefficient of certain polynomial sequences, generalizing a result by Schur. Lastly, we give an upper bound on minimal asymptotics of height over sequences of algebraic numbers.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a locally compact Hausdorff space, let $A$ be a partially ordered algebra, and let $\pi\colon \mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)\to A$ be a positive algebra homomorphism. Under conditions on $A$ that are satisfied in a good number of cases of practical interest, it is shown that $\pi$ is represented by a unique regular spectral measure $\mu$ on the Borel $\sigma$-algebra of $X$, taking its values in the positive idempotents in $A$. The measure $\mu$, which is $\sigma$-additive in an ordered sense, represents $\pi$ via the order integral (a generalisation of the Lebesgue integral) that goes back to J.D.M. Wright and which was investigated earlier by the authors. The positive algebra homomorphism $\pi$ can be extended from $\mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ to a positive linear map from the accompanying $L^1$-space of $\mu$ into $A$. It is shown that, quite often, this $L^1$-space is closed under multiplication, so that it is a vector lattice algebra, and that the extended map from $L^1$ into $A$ is not only an algebra homomorphism but, even when $A$ is not a vector lattice, also a vector lattice homomorphism in a sense that is explained in the paper. When $ A$ has the countable sup property, the image of $L^1$ (or of its positive cone) is described in terms of consecutive ups and downs of the image of ${\mathrm C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ (or of its positive cone). The general results are applied in three different contexts, showing how various spectral theorems have a common order-theoretical root: representations on Banach lattices, on Hilbert spaces, and (the algebra need not consist of operators) spectral theory for JBW-algebras.
