Abstract:The energy of a graph is the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of the graph which is used to approximate the total π-electron energy of the molecule. In this paper, we determine the (n,e)-graphs with minimal energy for e=n+1 and n+2, which is giving a complete solution to the conjecture for e=n+1 and e=n+2 proposed by Caporossi et al. in [4]. Moreover, we determine the graphs with the minimal and second-minimal energies for n−1≤e≤3n2−3, and the unique graph with minimal energy for 3n−52≤e≤2n−4 among all quasi-trees with n vertices and e edges, respectively.

Abstract:For a simple connected graph G, the incidence energy IE(G) is defined as the sum of all singular values of its incidence matrix. In this paper, we characterize the graphs with the maximum incidence energies among all graphs with given chromatic number and given pendent vertex number, respectively. We also characterize the graphs with the minimum incidence energy among all graphs with given clique number. Especially, we characterize the tree with the minimum incidence energy among all trees with given pendent vertex number.

Abstract:The energy of a graph is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of the graph. F. Zhang, H. Li [On acyclic conjugated molecules with minimal energies, Discrete Appl. Math. 92 (1999) 71–84] characterized the trees with a perfect matching having the minimal and the second minimal energies, which solved a conjecture proposed by I. Gutman [Acyclic conjugated molecules, trees and their energies, J. Math. Chem. 1 (1987) 123–143]. In this letter, for a given positive integer d we characterize the tree with the minimal energy having diameter at least d. As a corollary, we also characterize the tree with the minimal Hosoya index having diameter at least d.

Abstract:We define the cover number of a graph $G$ by a graph class $\mathcal P$ as the minimum number of graphs of class $\mathcal P$ required to cover the edge set of $G$. Taking inspiration from a paper by Harary, Hsu and Miller, we find an exact formula for the cover number by the graph classes $\{ G \mid \chi(G) \leq f(\omega(G))\}$ for an arbitrary non-decreasing function $f$. After this, we establish a chain of inequalities with five cover numbers, the one by the class $\{ G \mid \chi(G) = \omega(G)\}$, by the class of perfect graphs, generalized split graphs, co-unipolar graphs and finally by bipartite graphs. We prove that at each inequality, the difference between the two sides can grow arbitrarily large. We also prove that the cover number by unipolar graphs cannot be expressed in terms of the chromatic or the clique number.

Abstract:Let G = (V,E) be a graph with n vertices and e edges. Denote V(G) = {v 1,v 2,...,v n }. The 2-degree of v i , denoted by t i , is the sum of degrees of the vertices adjacent to$v_i, 1\leqslant i\leqslant n$. Let σ i be the sum of the 2-degree of vertices adjacent to v i . In this paper, we present two sharp upper bounds for the energy of G in terms of n, e, t i , and σ i , from which we can get some known results. Also we give a sharp bound for the energy of a forest, from which we can improve some known results for trees.

Abstract:The graph minor structure theorem by Robertson and Seymour shows that every graph that excludes a fixed minor can be constructed by a combination of four ingredients: graphs embedded in a surface of bounded genus, a bounded number of vortices of bounded width, a bounded number of apex vertices, and the clique-sum operation. This paper studies the converse question: What is the maximum order of a complete graph minor in a graph constructed using these four ingredients? Our main result answers this question up to a constant factor.

Abstract:A connected graph, on four or more vertices, is matching covered if every edge is present in some perfect matching. An ear decomposition theorem (similar to the one for $2$-connected graphs) exists for bipartite matching covered graphs due to Hetyei. From the results and proofs of Lovász and Plummer, that rely on Hetyei's theorem, one may deduce that any minimal bipartite matching covered graph has at least $2(m-n+2)$ vertices of degree two (where minimal means that deleting any edge results in a graph that is not matching covered); such a graph is said to be extremal if it attains the stated lower bound.

Abstract:The sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of a graph is called the energy of the graph. We study the problem of finding graphs with extremal energy within specified classes of graphs. We develop tools for treating such problems and obtain some partial results. Using calculus, we show that an extremal graph ``should'' have a small number of distinct eigenvalues. However, we also present data that shows in many cases that extremal graphs can have a large number of distinct eigenvalues.

Abstract:We consider a spectrum of geometric optimization problems motivated by contexts such as satellite communication and astrophysics. In the problem Minimum Scan Cover with Angular Costs, we are given a graph $G$ that is embedded in Euclidean space. The edges of $G$ need to be scanned, i.e., probed from both of their vertices. In order to scan their edge, two vertices need to face each other; changing the heading of a vertex incurs some cost in terms of energy or rotation time that is proportional to the corresponding rotation angle. Our goal is to compute schedules that minimize the following objective functions: (i) in Minimum Makespan Scan Cover (MSC-MS), this is the time until all edges are scanned; (ii) in Minimum Total Energy Scan Cover (MSC-TE), the sum of all rotation angles; (iii) in Minimum Bottleneck Energy Scan Cover (MSC-BE), the maximum total rotation angle at one vertex. Previous theoretical work on MSC-MS revealed a close connection to graph coloring and the cut cover problem, leading to hardness and approximability results. In this paper, we present polynomial-time algorithms for 1D instances of MSC-TE and MSC-BE, but NP-hardness proofs for bipartite 2D instances. For bipartite graphs in 2D, we also give 2-approximation algorithms for both MSC-TE and MSC-BE. Most importantly, we provide a comprehensive study of practical methods for all three problems. We compare three different mixed-integer programming and two constraint programming approaches, and show how to compute provably optimal solutions for geometric instances with up to 300 edges. Additionally, we compare the performance of different meta-heuristics for even larger instances.

Abstract:Let G=(V,E) be a weighted graph, i.e., with a vertex weight function w:V→R+. We study the problem of determining a minimum weight connected subgraph of G that has at least one vertex in common with all paths of length two in G. It is known that this problem is NP-hard for general graphs. We first show that it remains NP-hard when restricted to unit disk graphs. Our main contribution is a polynomial time approximation scheme for this problem if we assume that the problem is c-local and the unit disk graphs have minimum degree of at least two.

Abstract:In an earlier work, finite groups whose power graphs are minimally edge connected have been classified. In this article, first we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for an arbitrary graph to be minimally edge connected. Consequently, we characterize finite groups whose enhanced power graphs and order superpower graphs, respectively, are minimally edge connected. Moreover, for a finite non-cyclic group $G$, we prove that $G$ is an elementary abelian $2$-group if and only if its enhanced power graph is minimally connected. Also, we show that $G$ is a finite $p$-group if and only if its order superpower graph is minimally connected. Finally, we characterize all the finite nilpotent groups such that the minimum degree and the vertex connectivity of their order superpower graphs are equal.

Abstract:For a simple graph $G=(V,E),$ let $\mathcal{S}_+(G)$ denote the set of real positive semidefinite matrices $A=(a_{ij})$ such that $a_{ij}\neq 0$ if $\{i,j\}\in E$ and $a_{ij}=0$ if $\{i,j\}\notin E$. The maximum positive semidefinite nullity of $G$, denoted $\operatorname{M}_+(G),$ is $\max\{\operatorname{null}(A)|A\in \mathcal{S}_+(G)\}.$ A tree cover of $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint simple trees occurring as induced subgraphs of $G$ that cover all the vertices of $G$. The tree cover number of $G$, denoted $T(G)$, is the cardinality of a minimum tree cover. It is known that the tree cover number of a graph and the maximum positive semidefinite nullity of a graph are equal for outerplanar graphs, and it was conjectured in 2011 that $T(G)\leq M_+(G)$ for all graphs [Barioli et al., Minimum semidefinite rank of outerplanar graphs and the tree cover number, $ Elec. J. Lin. Alg.,$ 2011]. We show that the conjecture is true for certain graph families. Furthermore, we prove bounds on $T(G)$ to show that if $G$ is a connected outerplanar graph on $n\geq 2$ vertices, then $\operatorname{M}_+(G)=T(G)\leq \left\lceil\frac{n}{2}\right\rceil$, and if $G$ is a connected outerplanar graph on $n\geq 6$ vertices with no three or four cycle, then $\operatorname{M}_+(G)=T(G)\leq \frac{n}{3}$. We also characterize connected outerplanar graphs with $\operatorname{M}_+(G)=T(G)=\left\lceil\frac{n}{2}\right\rceil.$

Odd Covers of Complete Graphs and Hypergraphs

Abstract:The `odd cover number' of a complete graph is the smallest size of a family of complete bipartite graphs that covers each edge an odd number of times. For $n$ odd, Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is equal to $(n+1)/2$ or $(n+3)/2$, and they conjectured that it is always $(n+1)/2$. We prove this conjecture. For $n$ even, Babai and Frankl showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is always at least $n/2$, and the above authors and Radhakrishnan, Sen and Vishwanathan gave some values of $n$ for which equality holds. We give some new examples. Our constructions arise from some very symmetric constructions for the corresponding problem for complete hypergraphs. Thus the odd cover number of the complete 3-graph $K_n^{(3)}$ is the smallest number of complete 3-partite 3-graphs such that each 3-set is in an odd number of them. We show that the odd cover number of $K_n^{(3)}$ is exactly $n/2$ for even $n$, and we show that for odd $n$ it is $(n-1)/2$ for infinitely many values of $n$. We also show that for $r=3$ and $r=4$ the odd cover number of $K_n^{(r)}$ is strictly less than the partition number, answering a question of Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin for those values of $r$.

The Evolution of the Cover Time

Abstract:The cover time of a graph is a celebrated example of a parameter that is easy to approximate using a randomized algorithm, but for which no constant factor deterministic polynomial time approximation is known. A breakthrough due to Kahn, Kim, Lovász and Vu [25] yielded a (log log n ) 2 polynomial time approximation. We refine the upper bound of [25], and show that the resulting bound is sharp and explicitly computable in random graphs. Cooper and Frieze showed that the cover time of the largest component of the Erdős–Rényi random graph G ( n, c / n ) in the supercritical regime with c > 1 fixed, is asymptotic to ϕ( c ) n log 2 n , where ϕ( c ) → 1 as c ↓ 1. However, our new bound implies that the cover time for the critical Erdős–Rényi random graph G ( n , 1/ n ) has order n , and shows how the cover time evolves from the critical window to the supercritical phase. Our general estimate also yields the order of the cover time for a variety of other concrete graphs, including critical percolation clusters on the Hamming hypercube {0, 1} n , on high-girth expanders, and on tori ℤ d n for fixed large d . This approach also gives a simpler proof of a result of Aldous [2] that the cover time of a uniform labelled tree on k vertices is of order k 3/2 . For the graphs we consider, our results show that the blanket time, introduced by Winkler and Zuckerman [45], is within a constant factor of the cover time. Finally, we prove that for any connected graph, adding an edge can increase the cover time by at most a factor of 4.
Faster minimum weight subgraph algorithms

Abstract:In this dissertation we consider combinatorial optimization problems. In particular, we concentrate on algorithms that find subgraphs of a given graph of minimum weight that have a certain specified structure. First, we consider the problem of finding a minimum weight 2-edge-connected spanning subgraph of a given 2-edge-connected graph. For this problem we provide a linear-time exact algorithm for weighted graphs of bounded treewidth, a linear-time PTAS for unweighted planar graphs, and a PTAS for weighted planar graphs. Furthermore, we design algorithms for the b-edge dominating set problem. We improve upon an existing 8/3-approximation for general weighted graphs, prove limitations of previously used methods, and give linear-time algorithms for this problem on trees.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify all the finite groups $G$ such that the commuting graph $\Gamma_C(G)$, order-sum graph $\Gamma_{OS}(G)$ and non-inverse graph $\Gamma_{NI}(G)$ are minimally edge connected graphs. We also classify all the finite groups $G$ for that, these graphs are minimally connected. We also classify some groups for that the co-prime graph $\Gamma_{CP}(G)$ has minimal edge connectedness. In final part, we classify all the finite groups $G$ for that co-prime graph $\Gamma_{CP}(G)$ is minimally connected.

Abstract:In 1988, Erdős suggested the question of minimizing the number of edges in a connected $n$-vertex graph where every edge is contained in a triangle. Shortly after, Catlin, Grossman, Hobbs, and Lai resolved this in a stronger form. In this paper, we study a natural generalization of the question of Erdős in which we replace `triangle' with `clique of order $k$' for ${k\ge 3}$. We completely resolve this generalized question with the characterization of all extremal graphs. Motivated by applications in data science, we also study another generalization of the question of Erdős where every edge is required to be in at least $\ell$ triangles for $\ell\ge 2$ instead of only one triangle. We completely resolve this problem for $\ell = 2$.

Claw-free minimal matching covered graphs

Abstract:matching covered graph $G$ is minimal if for each edge $e$ of $G$, $G-e$ is not matching covered. An edge $e$ of a matching covered graph $G$ is removable if $G-e$ is also matching covered. Thus a matching covered graph is minimal if and only if it is free of removable edges. For bipartite graphs, Lovász and Plummer gave a characterization of bipartite minimal matching covered graphs. For bricks, Lovász showed that the only bricks that are minimal matching covered are $K_4$ and $\overline{C_6}$. In this paper, we present a complete characterization of minimal matching covered graphs that are claw-free. Moreover, for cubic claw-free matching covered graphs that are not minimal matching covered, we obtain the number of their removable edges (with respect to their bricks), and then prove that they have at least 12 removable edges (the bound is sharp).
