Abstract:In order to describe the biomechanical behaviors of PDL (periodontal ligament) accurately,based on the theory of continuum mechanics in large deformation and the hypothesis of incompressible isotropy,a hyperelastic-viscoelastic model of PDL and parameters were constructed by data fitting function in finite element software ABAQUS based on experimental data of plane shear and stress relaxation of human PDL.Then,the PDL hyperelastic-viscoelastic model was evaluated on the accuracy through simulations to the plane shear experiments of five PDL specimens.Finally,the mechanical responses to loads of PDL linear elastic model and hyperelastic-viscoelastic model were compared and analyzed by finite element simulations.The results indicated PDL was approximately expressed by linear elastic model when the displacements of root were within 0 ～ 0.06mm,while hyperelastic-viscoelastic model was more accurate to describe the material characteristics of PDL when the displacements exceed 0.06 mm,meanwhile a significant difference between two models could be observed.Based on this study,a practical PDL hyperelastic-viscoelastic model was acquired and a strong theoretical foundation was constructed for orthodontic biomechanical investigating and accurate treatment planning.
Nonlinear stress-strain behavior of periodontal ligament under orthodontic loading

Abstract:Previous studies of the periodontal ligament (PDL) have applied high forces to the dental units to examine the stress-strain behavior of this soft tissue. In this study, cadaveric specimens of mandibular premolars from 2 young adult and 2 elderly adult donors were tested to determine the biomechanical behavior of the PDL over an orthodontic force range. Transverse specimens were prepared from 9 premolars and subjected to loading in intrusion and extrusion. Stress-strain curves for both loading directions had distinct toe and linear regions, demonstrating nonlinear behavior of the PDL. The average linear shear modulus was higher for intrusion than for extrusion. The toe extrusive modulus was higher for the young group, and extrusive toe size was larger for the elderly group. In extrusion, the average modulus was higher for the cervical margin and the apex regions than for the midroot regions. The size of the toe region was smaller for intrusion than extrusion. The results indicate age-dependent, location-dependent, and load-direction-dependent nonlinear properties of the human PDL and suggest that analytical computer simulations of orthodontic tooth movements might benefit from incorporating the nonlinear material properties of the PDL.

Abstract:Background/purposeThe function and role of periodontal ligament (PDL) are of interest in a number of fields. Due to the complexity of the geometry and the impossibility of obtaining specimens, the mechanical properties of PDL remain uncertain. The object of this study was to investigate the viscoelastic behavior of PDL by means of nonlinear finite element analysis.Materials and methodsIn order to consider nonlinear force-displacement behavior, we proposed a finite strain viscoelasticity material model to represent PDL tissue. The strain energy consists of two kinds. The first is nonlinear in time, called viscoelasticity, and the other is geometrically nonlinear, called hyperelasticity. We obtained the material properties by retrograde calculation based on Ross's experiments.ResultsThe results demonstrate that viscoelastic properties mainly result from volumetric changes. The sources of volumetric change are fluids and the vascular system. Second, by combining the nonlinear geometric properties, we can simulate nonlinear load–displacement relationships. We found that the finite strain viscoelastic model can model both nonlinear load–displacement relationships and nonlinear time–displacement relationships.ConclusionThe nonlinear finite strain viscoelastic model can simulate both the creeping behavior and nonlinear load displacement behavior of teeth, and may be the best-fitting model for understanding the mechanical properties of PDL.

Abstract:The stressed state of the periodontal ligament (PDL) is understood to play a critical role in the tooth movement initiated by orthodontic treatment. Finite element simulations have been used to describe PDL stresses for orthodontic loading; however, these models have predominantly assumed linear mechanical properties for the PDL. The present study sought to determine the importance of using nonlinear mechanical properties and nonuniform geometric data in computer predictions of periodontal ligament stresses and tooth movements. A 2-dimensional plane-strain finite element model of a mandibular premolar was constructed based on anatomic data of transverse sections of tooth, PDL, and bone from a 24-year-old cadaveric man. A second model was constructed of the same tooth but with a PDL of uniform thickness. Each of these was prescribed linear or nonlinear elastic mechanical properties, as obtained in our own experiments. Predictions of the maximum and minimum principal stresses and von Mises stresses in the PDL were determined for extrusive and tipping forces. The results indicated that biofidelic finite element models predicted substantially different stresses in the PDL for extrusive loading than did the uniform thickness model, suggesting that incorporation of the hourglass shape of the PDL is warranted. In addition, incorporation of nonlinear mechanical properties for the PDL resulted in dramatic increases in the stresses at the apex and cervical margin as compared with the linear models.

Abstract:A viscoelastic constitutive model for the periodontal ligament (PDL) capable of accounting for large strains, anisotropy, and inelastic time-dependent effects was developed. Anisotropy characteristics are determined by the composite nature of the tissue and, in particular, by the distribution of collagen fibres. Time-dependent viscous phenomena are due to microstructural modifications during loading, such as fluid fluxes moving through the solid matrix and the internal rearrangement of fibers and constitutive adaptation. The viscoelastic model presented here was implemented in a general purpose finite element code. In vitro experimental tests were carried out on the PDL specimens of adult pigs to obtain stress-relaxation and cyclic stress-strain curves. The comparison of experimental and numerical results revealed good correspondence and confirmed the capability of the formulation assumed to properly interpret the viscoelastic behavior of the PDL.
Constitutive modeling of the non-linear visco-elasticity of the periodontal ligament

Abstract:A non-linear visco-elastic constitutive model is adopted to describe the relaxation phenomena of the periodontal ligament (PDL). The introduction of a non-linear formulation of visco-elasticity is necessary because experimental data from the literature referring to animal models show that the relaxation rate depends on the level of strain applied. In particular, the percentage of relaxation increases with decrease of the applied strain. The constitutive model is consistent with the non-linear elastic behavior of the PDL in the case of high rate loading and large strains attained by the tissue. A hyperelastic formulation is adopted for the elastic behavior of the PDL and this formulation is developed adopting suitable measures of stress and strain. The anisotropy of the tissue induced by specific spatial orientation of collagen fibers is included in the model. With respect to recent numerical formulation proposed to describe the non-linear visco-elasticity of the PDL, the proposed model has the advantage of being more consistent with the micro-structural configuration of the tissue and the large strains it can undergo. The results obtained show that a reasonable description of the PDL relaxation phenomena can be obtained by assuming that relaxation times are independent of strain, whereas the relative stiffness results are dependent on strain applied through an exponential function.
In vitro time-dependent response of periodontal ligament to mechanical loading

Abstract:This study examined the time-dependent response of bovine periodontal ligament (PDL). Applying linear viscoelastic theory, the objective was 1) to examine the linearity of the PDL's response in terms of its scaling and superposition property and 2) to generate the phase lag-vs.-frequency spectrum graph. PDL specimens were tested under three separate straining conditions: 1) tension ramp tests conducted at different strain rates, 2) pulling step-straining to 0.3 in discrete tests and to 0.3 and 0.6 in one continuous run, and 3) tension-compression sinusoidal oscillations. To this effect, bar-shaped specimens of bovine roots that comprised portions of dentin, PDL tissue, and alveolar bone were produced and strained in a microtensile machine. The experimental data demonstrated that neither the scaling nor the superposition properties were verified and that the viscoelastic response of the PDL was nonlinear. The PDL's elastic response was essentially stiffening, and its viscous component was pseudoplastic. The tangent of the PDL's strain-stress phase lag was in the 0-0.1 range in the tensile direction and in the 0.35-0.45 range in the compressive direction. In line with other biological tissues, the phase lag was largely independent of frequency. By use of the data generated, a mathematical model is outlined that reproduces both the elastic stiffening and viscous thinning of the PDL's response.

Abstract:BackgroundThe periodontal ligament (PDL) plays a key role in alveolar bone remodeling and resorption during tooth movements. The prediction of tooth mobility under functional dental loads requires a deep understanding of the mechanical behavior of the PDL, which is a critical issue in dental biomechanics. This study was aimed to examine the mechanical behavior of the PDL of the maxillary central and lateral incisors from human. The experimental results can contribute to developing an accurate constitutive model of the human PDL in orthodontics.MethodsThe samples of human incisors were cut into three slices. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted under different loading rates. The transverse sections (cervical, middle and apex) normal to the longitudinal axis of the root of the tooth were used in the uniaxial tensile tests. Based on a bilinear simplification of the stress–strain relations, the elastic modulus of the PDL was calculated. The values of the elastic modulus in different regions were compared to explore the factors that influence the mechanical behavior of the periodontal ligament.ResultsThe obtained stress–strain curves of the human PDL were characterized by a bilinear model with two moduli (E1 and E2) for quantifying the elastic behavior of the PDL from the central and lateral incisors. Statistically significant differences of the elastic modulus were observed in the cases of 1, 3, and 5 N loading levels for the different teeth (central and lateral incisors). The results showed that the mechanical property of the human incisors’ PDLs is dependent on the location of PDL (ANOVA, P = 0.022, P < 0.05). The elastic moduli at the middle planes were greater than at the cervical and apical planes. However, at the cervical, middle, and apical planes, the elastic moduli of the mesial and distal site were not significantly different (ANOVA, P = 0.804, P > 0.05).ConclusionsThe values of elastic modulus were determined in the range between 0.607 and 4.274 MPa under loads ranging from 1 to 5 N. The elastic behavior of the PDL is influenced by the loading rate, tooth type, root level, and individual variation.

Abstract:As a support to the tooth, the mechanical response of the periodontal ligament (PDL) is complex. Like other connective tissues, the PDL exhibits non-linear and time-dependent behavior. The viscoelasticity of the PDL plays a significant role in low and high loading rates. Little information, however, is available on the short-term viscoelastic behavior of the PDL. Also, due to the highly non-linear stress-strain response, it was hypothesized that the dynamic viscoelastic properties of the PDL would be greatly dependent on the preload. Therefore, the present study was designed to explore the dynamic tensile properties of the bovine PDL as a function of loading frequency and preload. The in vitro dynamic tensile tests were performed over a wide range of frequencies (0.01-100Hz) with dynamic force amplitude of 1N and different preloads of 3, 5 and 10N. The generalized Maxwell model was utilized to describe the non-linear viscoelastic behavior of the PDL. The low loss factor of the bovine PDL, measured between 0.04 and 0.08, indicates low energy dissipation due to the high content of collagen fibers. Moreover, the influence of viscous components in the linear region of the stress-strain curve (10N preload) was lower than those of the toe region (3N preload). The data reported in this study could be used in developing accurate computational models of the PDL.

Abstract:The periodontal ligament (PDL) plays an important role in initiating tooth movement when loads are applied to teeth with orthodontic appliances. It is also the most accessible ligament in the human body as it can be directly manipulated (via the teeth) without surgical intervention.Findings are presented here from a prototype palpation device for making load-displacement measurements, intended ultimately for in vivo use on humans. Here, the device is applied in vitro to a number of pig-jaws to assess its ability to distinguish visco-elastic properties of the PDL.Four jaws were tested, each test consisting of the application of a series of step displacements to the second mandibular premolar, and allowing the stress to relax over a period of up to 35 seconds. The resulting stress relaxation curves are described by a three-parameter visco-elastic model with two elastic parameters and one viscous parameter. The values of these parameters are consistent between animals and between tests on a given animal, and are reasonably consistent with other authors.

Abstract:A viscohyperelastic constitutive model with the use of the internal variables approach was formulated to evaluate the nonlinear elastic and time dependent anisotropic mechanical behavior of the periodontal ligament (PDL). Since the relaxation response was found to depend on the applied stretch, the adoption of the nonlinear viscous behavior in the present model was necessary. In this paper, Helmholtz free energy function was assigned to the material as the sum of hyperelastic and viscous terms which is based on the physical concept of internal variables. The constitutive model parameters were evaluated from the comparison of the proposed model and experimental data. For this purpose, tensile response of the bovine PDL samples under different stretch rates was obtained. The good correspondence between the proposed model and the experimental results confirmed the capability of the model to interpret the stretch rate behavior of the PDL. Moreover, the validity of structural model parameters was checked according to the results of the stress relaxation tests.

Abstract:ObjectiveThe human periodontal ligament (PDL) dominated by collagen fibers showed hyperelastic mechanical behavior under orthodontic force. Despite previous researches on the hyperelastic model of PDL, there were certain limitations because of the types of samples and the ignorance of distribution of collagen fibers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify the effect of collagen fibers distribution of human PDL on its hyperelastic behavior.MethodsA total of 6 human PDL samples of root neck, root middle and root apex were cut from human maxillary central incisor and lateral incisor. The spatial angles of collagen fibers were observed by optical microscope, the hyperelastic model was constructed combined with the observation results. The quasi-static uniaxial tensile tests with displacement load 0.05 mm/min were carried out, and the test data were used to identify the parameters of model.ResultsThe mechanical behavior of human PDL conformed to the trend of hyperelastic materials, and greatly depended on the spatial angles of internal collagen fibers. The R2 value statistical fit of the constitutive model to the data is excellent (R2 > 0.98). This model could excellently describe the hyperelastic properties of human PDL.SignificanceIn this study, we quantitatively described the effect of spatial distribution of collagen fibers on the mechanical properties of human PDL. The accuracy of this model was verified by the uniaxial test data, and the relevant model parameters were acquired, which have certain reference value in subsequent researches on hyperelasticity of human PDL and clinical treatment.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present work was, by means of a combined experimental and numerical approach, to investigate the full-field distributions of displacement, stress and strain, and their evolution with loading in the entire fresh periodontium under an externally applied force.METHODS: In situ intrusion tests were performed to identify the nonlinear, viscoelastic behavior of the periodontal ligament (PDL) of a pig mandible; a digital image correlation method was applied to examine the full-field deformation patterns in the entire periodontium. The finite element (FE) model was created based on the actual anatomic profiles of individual constituents of the tooth structure; the nonlinear and time-dependent viscoelastic properties of the PDL were input into the FE model to fit the numerical computations with the experimental measurements.RESULTS: The nonlinear, viscoelastic behavior of the PDL was identified and characterized quantitatively. The simulation results were validated by the experiments. The results showed the tilting of tooth and the movement of cervical bone toward the mid-tooth in the studied periodontium under vertical compressive loading. Major strain was concentrated in the PDL, with the maxima near to the tooth apexes, at the tooth-root bifurcation and also at the sides of the tooth roots, and maintained a slight rise during holding of the applied displacement. High stress in the tooth was located mainly at the sides of tooth roots, in the bone it was concentrated near the apexes and the root bifurcation, and these stresses decreased gradually during the holding period.SIGNIFICANCE: The combined approach of experiments that apply the digital image correlation method and FE analyses that take into account the nonlinear and time-dependent viscoelasticity of the PDL enables the acquisition of a full picture of detailed, realistic stress/strain fields and deformation patterns of the entire fresh periodontium, being of essence in orthodontics and dentistry.

Abstract:The mechanical strength of the periodontal ligament (PDL) was first measured as force required to extract a tooth from its socket using human specimens. Thereafter, tooth-PDL-bone preparations have extensively been used for measurement of the mechanical response of the PDL. In vitro treatments of such specimens with specific enzymes allowed one to investigate into the roles of the structural components in the mechanical support of the PDL. The viscoelastic responses of the PDL may be examined by analysis of the stress-relaxation. Video polarised microscopy suggested that the collagen molecules and fibrils in the stretched fibre bundles progressively align along the deformation direction during the relaxation. The stress-relaxation process of the PDL can be well expressed by a function with three exponential decay terms. Analysis after in vitro digestion of the collagen fibres by collagenase revealed that the collagen fibre components may play an important role in the long-term relaxation component of the stress-relaxation process of the PDL. The dynamic measurements of the viscoelastic properties of the PDL have recently suggested that the PDL can absorb more energy in compression than in shear and tension. These viscoelastic mechanisms of the PDL tissue could reduce the risk of injury to the PDL.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objective</h3><p>In orthodontic treatment, the biomechanical response of periodontal ligament (PDL) induces tooth movement. Coupling modeling of PDL can effectively reflect its biomechanical response. The nonlinear creep mechanical behavior of PDL was studied by uniaxial tensile creep test and a new hyper-viscoelastic constitutive model. Two coupling modeling methods with limitations were excluded.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>PDL specimens were prepared from the central incisors of pig mandible. The theoretical step function was replaced by static loading with a total loading time of 1 s. The creep loading with the constant stresses of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 MPa was selected and kept unchanged for 1000 s. The instantaneous hyperelastic mechanical behavior and time-dependent nonlinear viscoelastic mechanical behavior of PDL were characterized by coupled instantaneous third-order Ogden hyperelastic and time-dependent nonlinear creep models.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>The results showed that the instantaneous elastic curve of PDL increases in the form of hyperelastic index. The creep strain and creep compliance curves increase rapidly before 200s, and then increase slowly in steady state. The creep strain increased with an increase in the constant stress; conversely, the creep compliance decreased with an increase in the constant stress. The results showed that the experimental data were highly consistent with the hyper-viscoelastic constitutive model (R<sup>2</sup>>0.97).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Significance</h3><p>We normalize the framework of hyper-viscoelastic coupling modeling (Instantaneous hyperelastic model + time-dependent nonlinear viscoelastic model). Which can be extended to other nonlinear viscoelastic biomaterials.</p>

Abstract:This study is part of a research program that aims to develop a constitutive three-dimensional model of the periodontal ligament (PDL) through the identification of pertinent material parameters. As part of this program, bovine PDL was utilized to establish stress-strain responses under tensile and compressive loading conditions. Fresh bovine molars were secured, frozen and prepared to appropriate dimensional specifications. Bar-shaped specimens that comprised portions of dentine, PDL and bone were produced. Push-pull tests were conducted using a specifically constructed loading machine. Full range monotonic stress-strain diagrams were generated. The effect of a rate increase on cyclic S-E diagrams was also determined. The influence of specimen thickness was expressed in terms of modulus of elasticity, strength, uniaxial maximizer strain, and strain energy density. The overall load-response was heavily hysteretic in compression. On the tensile side, after a steep rise, the curve tended to flatten out asymptotically. Variations in rate that spanned four orders of magnitude had no effect on reciprocal load responses. The E-modulus was in the 4-8 MPa range, the strength of the PDL was 1-2 MPa, the maximizer strain was at 45-60% and the strain energy density ranged between 0.3 and 0.4 MPa.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES To determine the viscoelastic properties of the human periodontal ligament (PDL) using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was carried out on three human maxillary jaw segments containing six upper central incisors and four lateral incisors. DMA was used to investigate the mechanical response of the human PDL. Dynamic sinusoidal loading was carried out with an amplitude of 3 N and frequencies between 0.5 Hz and 10 Hz. All samples were grouped by tooth positions and longitudinal locations. RESULTS An increase of oscillation frequency resulted in marked changes in the storage and loss moduli of the PDL. The storage modulus ranged from 0.808 MPa to 7.274 MPa, and the loss modulus varied from 0.087 MPa to 0.891 MPa. The tanδ, representing the ratio between viscosity and elasticity, remained constant with frequency. The trends for storage and loss moduli were described by exponential fits. The dynamic moduli of the central incisor were higher than those of the lateral incisor. The PDL samples from the gingival third of the root showed lower storage and loss moduli than those from the middle third of the root. CONCLUSIONS Human PDL is viscoelastic through the range of frequencies tested: 0.5-10 Hz. The viscoelastic relationship changed with respect to frequency, tooth position, and root level.

Abstract:<p>Currently, Periodontal ligament (PDL) is considered as a viscoelastic solid biomaterial. However, we observed the steady-state rheological behavior of PDL through long time loading experiments, and suggested the theoretical definition of PDL as a viscoelastic fluid biomaterial. PDL specimens were prepared from the middle area of the mandibular central incisors in pigs. Dynamic force loading with frequencies of 0 (static load), 2, 5, and 10 Hz and amplitudes of 0.01, 0.02, and 0.03 MPa was adopted. The shear strain–time curve at the equilibrium position of PDL was obtained by a dynamic shear creep experiment. The results showed that the shear strain increased exponentially at first and then inclined toward an oblique line. The results showed that the PDL has viscoelastic fluid characteristics, independent of frequency and amplitude. The shear strain decreased with an increase in frequency and amplitude. To further analyze the viscoelastic characteristics of PDL, a 50000-s static shear creep experiment was re-designed. PDL exhibited viscoelastic fluid biomaterial characteristics according to the three aspects of the algebraic fitting, geometric characteristics, and physical results. For the first time, a viscoelastic fluid constitutive model was established to characterize the mechanical properties of PDL with high fitting accuracy. Furthermore, the shear viscosity coefficient of the dynamic load was larger than that of the static load, increasing with an increase in frequency and amplitude; compared with the static force, the dynamic force improved the viscosity of PDL, enhancing its function of fixing teeth, and introducing the new medical knowledge of "No tooth extraction after a meal."</p>
