Abstract:The semi-explicit index-1 integro-differential algebraic equation (IDAE) is a coupled system of Volterra integro-differential equations (VIDEs) and second-kind Volterra integral equations (VIEs). The existence, uniqueness and regularity of the exact solution are analyzed in detail. A numerical scheme mixed continuous Galerkin (CG) and discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is proposed for the IDAE with the VIDE part approximated by CG schemes and the VIE part approximated by DG schemes. First, the global convergence order of the numerical solution is obtained, which is optimal for the VIE part, but not for the VIDE part. To improve the numerical accuracy, the iterated DG method is introduced for the VIE part. By virtue of the iterated DG method, the optimal global convergence is obtained for the VIDE part, and the global and local superconvergence results are gained for the new combination of numerical schemes with CG and iterated DG methods. Some numerical experiments are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Convergence and superconvergence analysis of discontinuous Galerkin methods for index-2 integral-algebraic equations

Abstract:The integral-algebraic equation (IAE) is a mixed system of first-kind and second-kind Volterra integral equations (VIEs). This paper mainly focuses on the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method to solve index-2 IAEs. First, the convergence theory of perturbed DG methods for first-kind VIEs is established, and then used to derive the optimal convergence properties of DG methods for index-2 IAEs. It is shown that an $(m-1)$-th degree DG approximation exhibits global convergence of order~$m$ when~$m$ is odd, and of order~$m-1$ when~$m$ is even, for the first component~$x_1$ of the exact solution, corresponding to the second-kind VIE, whereas the convergence order is reduced by two for the second component~$x_2$ of the exact solution, corresponding to the first-kind VIE. Each component also exhibits local superconvergence of one order higher when~$m$ is even. When~$m$ is odd, superconvergence occurs only if $x_1$ satisfies $x_1^{(m)}(0)=0$. Moreover, with this condition, we can extend the local superconvergence result for~$x_2$ to global superconvergence when~$m$ is odd. Note that in the DG method for an index-1 IAE, generally, the global superconvergence of the exact solution component corresponding to the second-kind VIE can only be obtained by iteration. However, we can get superconvergence for all components of the exact solution of the index-2 IAE directly. Some numerical experiments are given to illustrate the obtained theoretical results.

Abstract:In the current study, we deal with a linear system of integral-algebraic-equations (IAEs) with vanishing delay arguments, which can be considered as the most momentous novelty of this work, since it is the first time where these two concepts have been combined. The so-called piecewise collocation scheme has been applied in order to numerically tackle the Hessenberg type IAEs system together with vanishing delays. Like always, this method confirms its solvability for these systems. Some well-established results in terms of regularity, existence, uniqueness, and also convergence of the solution for the problem under study have been presented masterly. Finally, two test problems have been fairly well-studied, for the sake of verifying theoretical achievements in practice.

Abstract:An algorithm for the direct inversion of the linear systems arising from Nyström discretization of integral equations on one-dimensional domains is described. The method typically has O(N) complexity when applied to boundary integral equations (BIEs) in the plane with non-oscillatory kernels such as those associated with the Laplace and Stokes’ equations. The scaling coefficient suppressed by the “big-O” notation depends logarithmically on the requested accuracy. The method can also be applied to BIEs with oscillatory kernels such as those associated with the Helmholtz and time-harmonic Maxwell equations; it is efficient at long and intermediate wave-lengths, but will eventually become prohibitively slow as the wave-length decreases. To achieve linear complexity, rank deficiencies in the off-diagonal blocks of the coefficient matrix are exploited. The technique is conceptually related to the ℋ- and ℋ2-matrix arithmetic of Hackbusch and co-workers, and is closely related to previous work on Hierarchically Semi-Separable matrices.

Abstract:The present work proposes a numerical method to obtain an approximate solution of non-linear weakly singular Fredholm integral equations. The discrete Galerkin method in addition to thin-plate splines established on scattered points is utilized to estimate the solution of these integral equations. The thin-plate splines can be regarded as a type of free shape parameter radial basis functions which create an efficient and stable technique to approximate a function. The discrete Galerkin method for the approximate solution of integral equations results from the numerical integration of all integrals in the method. We utilize a special accurate quadrature formula via the non-uniform composite Gauss-Legendre integration rule and employ it to compute the singular integrals appeared in the scheme. Since the approach does not need any background meshes, it can be identified as a meshless method. Error analysis is also given for the method. Illustrative examples are shown clearly the reliability and efficiency of the new scheme and confirm the theoretical error estimates.

Abstract:In the current study, an efficient iterative scheme which is based on the two powerful tools called the quasilinearization method and the Jacobi-Galerkin method is proposed to solve a type of functional Volterra integral equations. According to the iterative structure of the proposed method, an error analysis of the method is provided. This method can overcome the difficulty of solving nonlinear system of algebraic equations associated with the Galerkin method in treating nonlinear functional Volterra integral equations directly. Moreover, under sufficient conditions, the suggested method has spectral accuracy. In the end, several numerical experiments are reported to confirm the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:We formulate and analyze a fully discrete approximate solution of the linear Schrödinger equation on the unit square written as a Schrödinger-type system. The finite element Galerkin method is used for the spatial discretization, and the time stepping is done with an alternating direction implicit extrapolated Crank-Nicolson method. We demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of the approximation, and prove that the scheme is of optimal accuracy in the and norms in space and second-order accurate in time. Numerical results are presented which support the theory.

Abstract:Singular systems with index one arise in many applications, such as Markov chain modelling. In this paper, we use the group inverse to characterize the convergence and quotient convergence properties of stationary iterative schemes for solving consistent singular linear systems when the index of the coefficient matrix equals one. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of stationary iterative methods for such problems. Next we show that for the stationary iterative method, the convergence and the quotient convergence are equivalent.

Abstract:An inverse problem is considered, which consists in finding a solution and a one-dimensional kernel of the integral term of an inhomogeneous integro-differential equation of hyperbolic type from the conditions that make up the direct problem and some additional condition. First, the direct problem is investigated, while the kernel of the integral term is assumed to be known. By integrating over the characteristics, the given intego-differential equation is reduced to a Volterra integral equation of the second kind and is solved by the method of successive approximations. Further, using additional information about the solution of the direct problem, we obtain an integral equation with respect to the kernel of the integral k(t), of the integral term. Thus, the problem is reduced to solving a system of integral equations of the Volterra type of the second kind. The resulting system is written as an operator equation. To prove the global, unique solvability of this problem, the method of contraction mappings in the space of continuous functions with weighted norms is used. And also the theorem of conditional stability of the solution of the inverse problem is proved, while the method of estimating integrals and Gronoullo’s inequality is used.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the global convergence for the numerical solutions of nonlinear Volterra integral equations of the second kind by means of Galerkin finite element methods. Global superconvergence properties are discussed by iterated finite element methods and interpolated finite element methods. Local superconvergence and iterative correction schemes are also considered by iterated finite element methods. We improve the corresponding results obtained by collocation methods in the recent papers [6] and [9] by H. Brunner, Q. Lin and N. Yan. Moreover, using an interpolation post-processing technique, we obtain a global superconvergence of the O(h2r)-convergence rate in the piecewise-polynomial space of degree not exceeding (r−1). As a by-product of our results, all these higher order numerical methods can also provide an a posteriori error estimator, which gives critical and useful information in the code development.

Abstract:This article investigates an approximate scheme to solve nonlinear Fredholm integral equations of the second kind on non-rectangular domains. The integral equations considered in the current paper are considered together with either smooth or weakly singular kernels. The offered method utilizes thin plate splines as a basis in the discrete collocation method. We can regard thin plate splines as a type of the free shape parameter radial basis functions. These basis functions establish an accurate and stable technique to estimate an unknown function by using a set of scattered points on the solution domains. Since the thin plate splines have limited smoothness, the integrals appeared in the scheme cannot be estimated by classical integration rules. Therefore, we introduce a special precise quadrature formula on non-rectangular domains to compute these integrals. The proposed scheme does not require any mesh generations, so it is meshless and does not depend on the domain form. Error analysis is also provided for the method. The performance and convergence of the new approach are tested on four two-dimensional integral equations given on the wing, mushroom, pentagon and fish-like domains.
Negative norm estimates and superconvergence results in Galerkin method for strongly nonlinear parabolic problems

Abstract:The conforming finite element Galerkin method is applied to discretise in the spatial direction for a class of strongly nonlinear parabolic problems. Using elliptic projection of the associated linearised stationary problem with Gronwall type result, optimal error estimates are derived, when piecewise polynomials of degree $r\geq 1$ are used, which improve upon earlier results of Axelsson [Numer. Math. 28 (1977), pp. 1-14] requiring for 2d $r\geq 2$ and for 3d $r\geq 3.$ Based on quasi-projection technique introduced by Douglas {\it et al.} [Math. Comp.32 (1978),pp. 345-362], superconvergence result for the error between Galerkin approximation and approximation through quasi-projection is established for the semidiscrete Galerkin scheme. Further, {\it a priori} error estimates in Sobolev spaces of negative index are derived. Moreover, in a single space variable, nodal superconvergence results between the true solution and Galerkin approximation are established.

Abstract:A Nitsche-based element-free Galerkin (EFG) method for solving semilinear elliptic problems is developed and analyzed in this paper. The existence and unique-ness of the weak solution for semilinear elliptic problems are proved based on a con-dition that the nonlinear term is an increasing Lipschitz continuous function of the unknown function. A simple iterative scheme is used to deal with the nonlinear in-tegral term. We proved the existence, uniqueness and convergence of the weak solu-tion sequence for continuous level of the simple iterative scheme. A commonly used assumption for approximate space, sometimes called inverse assumption, is proved. Optimal order error estimates in L2 and H1 norms are proved for the linear and semi-linear elliptic problems. In the actual numerical calculation, the characteristic distance h does not appear explicitly in the parameter & beta; introduced by the Nitsche method. The theoretical results are confirmed numerically.

Abstract:The current study aims to develop an error analysis for non-linear parabolic singularly perturbed reaction–diffusion problems using element-free Galerkin method. A robust numerical methodology is introduced based on combining the implicit Crank–Nicolson scheme for temporal derivatives and the element-free Galerkin (EFG) method for spatial derivatives. The moving least-squares (MLS) approximation has been employed to generate the shape functions. Essential boundary conditions have been enforced by the incorporation of the Lagrange multiplier method. Due to the presence of steep boundary layers in the solution of the considered problem, a piecewise-uniform layer-adapted Shishkin's technique has been used to generate nodal points at the transition point. The stability and error analysis of the present method on a discrete norm is analyzed in an innovative theoretical framework. The -uniform convergency of the fully-discrete EFG method is shown to be , where and are the time step size and size of the influence domain, respectively. The Lagrange multiplier method has been incorporated to deal with the implementation of essential boundary conditions. Lastly, a few numerical experiments are performed to validate the theoretical results and verify the computational consistency and robustness of the proposed scheme. The errors and the convergence rate have been presented.

Abstract:Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin methods are some of the most successful solution procedures in numerical analysis. Their popularity is mainly due to the optimality properties of their approximate solution. We show that these features carry over to the (Petrov-)Galerkin methods applied for the solution of linear matrix equations. Some novel considerations about the use of Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin schemes in the numerical treatment of general linear matrix equations are expounded and the use of constrained minimization techniques in the Petrov-Galerkin framework is proposed.

A Linearized L1-Galerkin FEM for Non-smooth Solutions of Kirchhoff type Quasilinear Time-fractional Integro-differential Equation

Abstract:In this article, we study the semi discrete and fully discrete formulations for a Kirchhoff type quasilinear integro-differential equation involving time-fractional derivative of order $\alpha \in (0,1) $. For the semi discrete formulation of the equation under consideration, we discretize the space domain using a conforming FEM and keep the time variable continuous. We modify the standard Ritz-Volterra projection operator to carry out error analysis for the semi discrete formulation of the considered equation. In general, solutions of the time-fractional partial differential equations (PDEs) have a weak singularity near time $t=0$. Taking this singularity into account, we develop a new linearized fully discrete numerical scheme for the considered equation on a graded mesh in time. We derive a priori bounds on the solution of this fully discrete numerical scheme using a new weighted $H^{1}(\Omega)$ norm. We prove that the developed numerical scheme has an accuracy rate of $O(P^{-1}+N^{-(2-\alpha)})$ in $L^{\infty}(0,T;L^{2}(\Omega))$ as well as in $L^{\infty}(0,T;H^{1}_{0}(\Omega))$, where $P$ and $N$ are degrees of freedom in the space and time directions respectively. The robustness and efficiency of the proposed numerical scheme are demonstrated by some numerical examples.

Galerkin-Bernstein Approximations for the System of Third-Order Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems

Abstract:This paper is devoted to find the numerical solutions of one dimensional general nonlinear system of third-order boundary value problems (BVPs) for the pair of functions using Galerkin weighted residual method. We derive mathematical formulations in matrix form, in details, by exploiting Bernstein polynomials as basis functions. A reasonable accuracy is found when the proposed method is used on few examples. At the end of the study, a comparison is made between the approximate and exact solutions, and also with the solutions of the existing methods. Our results converge monotonically to the exact solutions. In addition, we show that the the derived formulations may be applicable by reducing higher order complicated BVP into a lower order system of BVPs, and the performance of the numerical solutions is satisfactory.

Abstract:Usual spectral methods are not effective for singularly perturbed problems and singular integral equations due to the boundary layer functions or weakly singular solutions. To overcome this difficulty, the enriched spectral-Galerkin methods (ESG) are applied to deal with a class of singularly perturbed problems and singular integral equations for which the form of leading singular solutions can be determined. In particular, for easily understanding the technique of ESG, the detail of the process are provided in solving singularly perturbed problems. Abstract:This work aims to provide a comprehensive and unified numerical analysis for non linear system of parabolic variational inequalities (PVIs) subject to Dirichlet boundary condition. This analysis enables us to establish an existence of the exact solution to the considered model and to prove the convergence for the approximate solution and its approximate gradient. Our results are applicable for several conforming and non conforming numerical schemes.
