Abstract:This survey article concerns inducing schemes in the context of interval maps. We explain how the study of these induced systems allows for the fine description of, not only, the thermodynamic formalism for certain multimodal maps, but also of its multifractal structure.

Abstract:We study a one-parameter family of countably piecewise linear interval maps, which, although Markov, fail the `large image property'. This leads to conservative as well as dissipative behaviour for different maps in the family with respect to Lebesgue. We investigate the transition between these two types, and study the associated thermodynamic formalism, describing in detail the second order phase transitions (i.e. the pressure function is $C^1$ but not $C^2$ at the phase transition) that occur in transition to dissipativity. We also study the various natural definitions of pressure which arise here, computing these using elementary recurrence relations.

Abstract:In this article, we develop a novel functional analytic approach and demonstrate its effectiveness in establishing the existence, uniqueness, regularity of disintegration, and statistical properties of equilibrium states associated with a class of discontinuous dynamics. We apply this approach to a group of piecewise partially hyperbolic maps and a set of potentials. Furthermore, we prove several limit theorems, such as exponential decay of correlations, and propose certain conjectures. Additionally, we provide a set of examples where these results can be applied, including discontinuous dynamics semi-conjugated to the Manneville-Pomeau map.

Abstract:We derive new variants of the quantitative Borel--Cantelli lemma and apply them to analysis of statistical properties for some dynamical systems. We consider intermittent maps of $(0,1]$ which have absolutely continuous invariant probability measures. In particular, we prove that every sequence of intervals with left endpoints uniformly separated from zero is the strong Borel--Cantelli sequence with respect to such map and invariant measure.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamics of a smooth multimodal interval map f with non-flat critical points and all periodic points hyperbolic repelling. Assuming that |Df n (f(c))|→∞ as n→∞ holds for all critical points c, we show that f satisfies the so-called backward contracting property with an arbitrarily large constant, and that f has an invariant probability μ which is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure and the density of μ belongs to L p for all p<ℓ max /(ℓ max -1), where ℓ max denotes the maximal critical order of f. In the appendix, we prove that various growth conditions on the derivatives along the critical orbits imply stronger backward contraction.

Abstract:Abstract A natural generalization of interval exchange maps are linear involutions, first introduced by Danthony and Nogueira [Measured foliations on non-orientable surfaces. Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 26 (6) (1993), 645–664]. Recurrent train tracks with a single switch provide a subclass of linear involutions. We call such linear involutions non-classical interval exchanges. They are related to measured foliations on orientable flat surfaces. Non-classical interval exchanges can be studied as a dynamical system by considering Rauzy induction in this context. This gives a refinement process on the parameter space similar to Kerckhoff’s simplicial systems. We show that the refinement process gives an expansion that has a key dynamical property called uniform distortion . We use uniform distortion to prove normality of the expansion. Consequently, we prove an analog of Keane’s conjecture: almost every non-classical interval exchange is uniquely ergodic. Uniform distortion has been independently shown in [A. Avila and M. Resende. Conundrums for continuous Lebesgue measure-preserving interval maps

Abstract:We consider continuous maps of the interval which preserve the Lebesgue measure. Except for the identity map or $1 - \id$ all such maps have topological entropy at least $\log2/2$ and generically they have infinite topological entropy. In this article we show that thegeneric map has zero measure-theoretic entropy. This implies that there are dramatic differences in the topological versus metric behavior both for injectivity as well as for the structure of thelevel sets of generic maps.

Abstract:In this paper we study the thermodynamic formalism of strongly transitive endomorphisms $f$, focusing on the set all expanding measures. In case $f$ is a non-flat $C^{1+}$ map defined on a Riemannian manifold, these are invariant probability measures with all its Lyapunov exponents positive. Given a Hölder continuous potential $\varphi$ we prove the uniqueness of the equilibrium state among the space of expanding measures. Moreover, we show that the existence of an expanding measure $\mu$ maximizing the entropy on the the space of expanding measures implies the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium state $\mu_{\varphi}$ on the space of expanding measures for any Hölder continuous potential $\varphi$ with a small oscillation $\text{osc }\varphi=\sup\varphi-\inf\varphi$. As some applications, we prove that Collet-Eckmann quadratic maps does not admit phase transition for Hölder potential, and show that for Viana maps and every Hölder continuous potential of sufficiently small oscillation has a unique equilibrium state.

Interval maps with dense periodicity

Abstract:We consider the class of interval maps with dense set of periodic points CP and its closure Cl(CP) equipped with the metric of uniform convergence. Besides studying basic topological properties and density results in the spaces CP and Cl(CP) we prove that Cl(CP) is dynamically characterized as the set of interval maps for which every point is chain-recurrent. Furthermore, we prove that a strong topological expansion property called topological exactness (or leo property) is attained on the open dense set of maps in CP and on a residual set in Cl(CP). Moreover, we show that every second category set in CP and Cl(CP) is rich in a sense that it contains uncountably many conjugacy classes. An analogous conclusion also holds in the setting of interval maps preserving any fixed non-atomic probability measure with full support. Finally, we give a detailed description of the structure of periodic points of generic maps in CP and Cl(CP) and show that generic maps in CP and Cl(CP) satisfy the shadowing property.

Positive Transversality Via Transfer Operators and Holomorphic Motions with Applications to Monotonicity for Interval Maps

Abstract:In this paper we will develop a general approach which shows that generalized 'critical relations' of families of locally defined holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally. The main idea is to define a transfer operator, which is a local analogue of the Thurston pullback operator, using holomorphic motions. Assuming a so-called lifting property is satisfied, we obtain information about the spectrum of this transfer operator and thus about transversality. An important new feature of our method is that it is not global: the maps we consider are only required to be defined and holomorphic on a neighbourhood of some finite set. We will illustrate this method by obtaining transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval and circle maps, for example for maps with flat critical points, but also for maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps. As in Tsujii's approach (Tsujii M 1994 A note on Milnor and Thurston's monotonicity theoremGeometry and Analysis in Dynamical Systemvol 14 (Singapore: World Scientific) pp 60-2; Tsujii M 2000 Ergod. Theor. Dyn. Syst.20925-933), for real maps we obtain positive transversality (where > 0 holds instead of just not equal 0), and thus monotonicity of entropy for these families, and also (as an easy application) for the real quadratic family. This method additionally gives results for unimodal families of the form x -> vertical bar x vertical bar(l) vertical bar c for l > 1 not necessarily an even integer and c real.

Abstract:In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. Abstract:Expanding Thurston maps were introduced by M. Bonk and D. Meyer with motivation from complex dynamics and Cannon's conjecture from geometric group theory via Sullivan's dictionary. In this paper, we study subsystems of expanding Thurston maps motivated via Sullivan's dictionary as analogs of some subgroups of Kleinian groups. We prove the uniqueness and various ergodic properties of the equilibrium states for strongly primitive subsystems and real-valued Hölder continuous potentials, and establish the equidistribution of preimages of subsystems with respect to the equilibrium states. Here, the sphere $S^{2}$ is equipped with a natural metric, called a visual metric, introduced by M. Bonk and D. Meyer. As a result, for strongly primitive subsystems of expanding Thurston maps without periodic critical points, we obtain a level-$2$ large deviation principle for Birkhoff averages and iterated preimages.

Abstract:Consider a multimodal interval map $f$ of $C^3$ with non-flat critical points. We establish several characterizations of the map $f$ is quasi-symmetrically conjugated to a piecewise affine map in the case $f$ is topologically exact and all of its periodic points are hyperbolic repelling. In particular, we give a negative answer to a question posted by Henk Bruin in \cite{Bru96}.

Abstract:In this survey we deal with transcendental meromorphic and entire functions. We thoroughly discuss in this context close relations between topological pressure and conformal measures for geometric potentials. For two more special classes of meromorphic functions, namely dynamically semi-regular and those in the class D$$\mathcal {D}$$ that have negative spectrum, we then also discuss, by means of the appropriate transfer (or Perron-Frobenius) operator, the corresponding thermodynamic formalism for such potentials. It holds in its full classical version. At the end of the survey we discuss hyperbolic dimension, Bowen’s Formula, and real analyticity of Hausdorff dimension.

Interval maps mimicking circle rotations

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of maps of the real line whose behavior on an invariant interval is close to a rational rotation on the circle. We concentrate on a specific two-parameter family, describing the dynamics arising from models in game theory, mathematical biology and machine learning. If one parameter is a rational number, $k/n$, with $k,n$ coprime, and the second one is large enough, we prove that there is a periodic orbit of period $n$. It behaves like an orbit of the circle rotation by an angle $2\pi k/n$ and attracts trajectories of Lebesgue almost all starting points. We also discover numerically other interesting phenomena. While we do not give rigorous proofs for them, we provide convincing explanations.

Abstract:We study a class of interval translation mappings introduced by Bruin and Troubetzkoy, describing a new renormalization scheme, inspired by the classical Rauzy induction for this class. We construct a measure, invariant under the renormalization, supported on the parameters yielding infinite type interval translation mappings in this class. With respect to this measure, a.e. transformation is uniquely ergodic. We show that this set has Hausdorff dimension between 1.5 and 2, and that the Hausdorff dimension coincides with the affinity dimension. Finally, seeing our renormalization as a multidimensional continued fraction algorithm, we show that it has almost always the Pisot property. We discover an interesting phenomenon: the dynamics of this class of transformations is often (conjecturally: almost always) weak mixing, while the renormalizing algorithm typically has the Pisot property.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the Variational Principle and develop a thermodynamic formalism for correspondences. We define the measure-theoretic entropy for transition probability kernels and topological pressure for correspondences. Based on these two notions, we establish the following results: The Variational Principle holds and equilibrium states exist for continuous potential functions, provided that the correspondence satisfies some expansion property called forward expansiveness. If, in addition, the correspondence satisfies the specification property and the potential function is Bowen summable, then the equilibrium state is unique. On the other hand, for a distance-expanding, open, strongly transitive correspondence and a Hölder continuous potential function, there exists a unique equilibrium state, and the backward orbits are equidistributed. Furthermore, we investigate the Variational Principle for general correspondences. In conformal dynamics, we establish the Variational Principle for the Lee--Lyubich--Markorov--Mazor--Mukherjee anti-holomorphic correspondences, which are matings of some anti-holomorphic rational maps with anti-Hecke groups and not forward expansive. We also show a Ruelle--Perron--Frobenius Theorem for a family of hyperbolic holomorphic correspondences of the form $\boldsymbol{f}_c (z)= z^{q/p}+c$.

Topological dynamics of Markov multi-maps of the interval

Abstract:We study Markov multi-maps of the interval from the point of view of topological dynamics. Specifically, we investigate whether they have various properties, including topological transitivity, topological mixing, dense periodic points, and specification. To each Markov multi-map, we associate a shift of finite type (SFT), and then our main results relate the properties of the SFT with those of the Markov multi-map. These results complement existing work showing a relationship between the topological entropy of a Markov multi-map and its associated SFT. We also characterize when the inverse limit systems associated to the Markov multi-maps have the properties mentioned above.

Abstract:Irreversible thermodynamics of simple fluids have been connected recently to the theory of dynamical systems and some interesting assumptions have been made about the nature of the associated invariant measures. We show that the tests of validity of these assumptions are insufficient by exhibiting observables that are incorrectly sampled with the proposed invariant measures. Only observables belonging to the "high temperature phase" of the thermodynamic formalism are insensitive to the sampling methods. We outline methods that are free of these deficiencies.

Proofs of ergodicity of piecewise Möbius interval maps using planar extensions

Abstract:We give two results for deducing dynamical properties of piecewise Möbius interval maps from their related planar extensions. First, eventual expansivity and the existence of an ergodic invariant probability measure equivalent to Lebesgue measure both follow from mild finiteness conditions on the planar extension along with a new property ``bounded non-full range" used to relax traditional Markov conditions. Second, the ``quilting" operation to appropriately nearby planar systems, introduced by Kraaikamp and co-authors, can be used to prove several key dynamical properties of a piecewise Möbius interval map. As a proof of concept, we apply these results to recover known results on the well-studied Nakada $\alpha$-continued fractions; we obtain similar results for interval maps derived from an infinite family of non-commensurable Fuchsian groups.
