Abstract:Skvortsova showed that there is a factor of the Medvedev lattice which captures intuitionistic propositional logic (IPC). However, her factor is unnatural in the sense that it is constructed in an ad hoc manner. We present a more natural example of such a factor. We also show that for every non-trivial factor of the Medvedev lattice its theory is contained in Jankov's logic, the deductive closure of IPC plus the weak law of the excluded middle. This answers a question by Sorbi and Terwijn.

Abstract:In 1984, Wim Ruitenburg published a surprising result about periodic sequences in intuitionistic propositional calculus (IPC). The property established by Ruitenburg naturally generalizes local finiteness (intuitionistic logic is not locally finite, even in a single variable). However, one of the two main goals of this note is to illustrate that most "natural" non-classical logics failing local finiteness also do not enjoy the periodic sequence property; IPC is quite unique in separating these properties. The other goal of this note is to present a Coq formalization of Ruitenburg's heavily syntactic proof. Apart from ensuring its correctness, the formalization allows extraction of a program providing a certified implementation of Ruitenburg's algorithm.

Abstract:The Gödel–Artemov framework offered a formalization of the Brouwer–Heyting–Kolmogorov (BHK) semantics of intuitionistic logic via classical proofs. In this framework, the intuitionistic propositional logic IPC is embedded in the modal logic S4, S4 is realized in the Logic of Proofs LP, and LP has a provability interpretation in Peano Arithmetic. Self-referential LP-formulas of the type ‘t is a proof of a formula ϕ containing t itself’ are permitted in the realization of S4 in LP, and if such formulas are indeed involved, it is then necessary to use fixed-point arithmetical methods to explain intuitionistic logic via provability. The natural question of whether self-referentiality can be avoided in realization of S4 was answered negatively by Kuznets who provided an S4-theorem that cannot be realized without using directly self-referential LP-formulas. This paper studies the question of whether IPC can be embedded in S4 and then realized in LP without using self-referential formulas. We consider a general class of Gödel-style modal embeddings of IPC in S4 and by extending Kuznetsʼ method, show that there are IPC-theorems such that, under each such embedding, are mapped to S4-theorems that cannot be realized in LP without using directly self-referential formulas. Interestingly, all double-negations of tautologies that are not IPC-theorems, like ¬¬(¬¬p→p), are shown to require direct self-referentiality. Another example is found in IPC→, the purely implicational fragment of IPC. This suggests that the BHK semantics of intuitionistic logic (even of intuitionistic implication) is intrinsically self-referential.
Self-referentiality in the Brouwer-Heyting-Kolmogorov Semantics of Intuitionistic Logic.

Abstract:The intended provability semantics of Intuitionistic Propositional Logic IPC (also called Brouwer–Heyting–Kolmogorov semantics) has been formalized within Gödel-Artemov’s framework. According to this approach, IPC is embedded in modal logic S4 by Gödel embedding and S4 is realized in Artemov’s Logic of Proofs LP which has a provability interpretation in Peano Arithmetic. Artemov’s realization of S4 in LP uses self-referential LP-formulas of the form $t\!\!:\!\!\phi(t)$, namely, ‘t is a proof of a formula φ containing t itself.’ Kuznets showed that this is not avoidable by offering S4-theorems that cannot be realized without using self-referential LP-formulas. This paper extends Kuznets’ method to find IPC-theorems that call for direct self-referentiality in LP. Roughly speaking, examples include double-negations of tautologies that are not IPC-theorems, e.g., $\neg\neg(\neg\neg p\!\rightarrow\! p)$, and there are also examples in the purely implicational fragment IPC → . This suggests that the Brouwer–Heyting–Kolmogorov semantics of intuitionistic logic is intrinsically self-referential.

Abstract:We study the system IFP of intuitionistic fixed point logic, an extension of intuitionistic first-order logic by strictly positive inductive and coinductive definitions. We define a realizability interpretation of IFP and use it to extract computational content from proofs about abstract structures specified by arbitrary classically true disjunction free formulas. The interpretation is shown to be sound with respect to a domain-theoretic denotational semantics and a corresponding lazy operational semantics of a functional language for extracted programs. We also show how extracted programs can be translated into Haskell. As an application we extract a program converting the signed digit representation of real numbers to infinite Gray-code from a proof of inclusion of the corresponding coinductive predicates.

Abstract:A famous result, conjectured by Gödel in 1932 and proved by McKinsey and Tarski in 1948, says that $\varphi$ is a theorem of intuitionistic propositional logic IPC iff its Gödel-translation $\varphi'$ is a theorem of modal logic S4. In this paper, we extend an intuitionistic version of modal logic S1+SP, introduced in our previous paper (S. Lewitzka, Algebraic semantics for a modal logic close to S1, J. Logic and Comp., doi:<a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1093/logcom/exu067" href="https://doi.org/10.1093/logcom/exu067" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1093/logcom/exu067</a>) to a classical modal logic L and prove the following: a propositional formula $\varphi$ is a theorem of IPC iff $\square\varphi$ is a theorem of L (actually, we show: $\Phi\vdash_{IPC}\varphi$ iff $\square\Phi\vdash_L\square\varphi$, for propositional $\Phi,\varphi$). Thus, the map $\varphi\mapsto\square\varphi$ is an embedding of IPC into L, i.e. L contains a copy of IPC. Moreover, L is a conservative extension of classical propositional logic CPC. In this sense, L is an amalgam of CPC and IPC. We show that L is sound and complete w.r.t. a class of special Heyting algebras with a (non-normal) modal operator.

Abstract:In this paper we study NNIL, the class of formulas of the Intuitionistic Propositional Calculus. IPC with no nestings of implications to the left. We show that the formulas of this class are precisely the formulas of the language of IPC that are preserved under taking submodels of Kripke models for IPC (for various notions of submodel). This makes NNIL an analogue of the purely universal formulas in Predicate Logic. We prove a number of interpolation properties for NNIL, and explore the extent to which these properties can be generalized to more complicated classes of formulas.
On the strength of the finite intersection principle

Abstract:We study the logical content of several maximality principles related to the finite intersection principle ($F\IP$) in set theory. Classically, these are all equivalent to the axiom of choice, but in the context of reverse mathematics their strengths vary: some are equivalent to $\ACA$ over $\RCA$, while others are strictly weaker, and incomparable with $\WKL$. We show that there is a computable instance of $F\IP$ all of whose solutions have hyperimmune degree, and that every computable instance has a solution in every nonzero c.e.\ degree. In terms of other weak principles previously studied in the literature, the former result translates to $F\IP$ implying the omitting partial types principle ($\mathsf{OPT}$). We also show that, modulo $\Sigma^0_2$ induction, $F\IP$ lies strictly below the atomic model theorem ($\mathsf{AMT}$).

Inductive Predicate Synthesis Modulo Programs (Extended)

Abstract:A growing trend in program analysis is to encode verification conditions within the language of the input program. This simplifies the design of analysis tools by utilizing off-the-shelf verifiers, but makes communication with the underlying solver more challenging. Essentially, the analyzer operates at the level of input programs, whereas the solver operates at the level of problem encodings. To bridge this gap, the verifier must pass along proof-rules from the analyzer to the solver. For example, an analyzer for concurrent programs built on an inductive program verifier might need to declare Owicki-Gries style proof-rules for the underlying solver. Each such proof-rule further specifies how a program should be verified, meaning that the problem of passing proof-rules is a form of invariant synthesis. Similarly, many program analysis tasks reduce to the synthesis of pure, loop-free Boolean functions (i.e., predicates), relative to a program. From this observation, we propose Inductive Predicate Synthesis Modulo Programs (IPS-MP) which extends high-level languages with minimal synthesis features to guide analysis. In IPS-MP, unknown predicates appear under assume and assert statements, acting as specifications modulo the program semantics. Existing synthesis solvers are inefficient at IPS-MP as they target more general problems. In this paper, we show that IPS-MP admits an efficient solution in the Boolean case, despite being generally undecidable. Moreover, we show that IPS-MP reduces to the satisfiability of constrained Horn clauses, which is less general than existing synthesis problems, yet expressive enough to encode verification tasks. We provide reductions from challenging verification tasks -- such as parameterized model checking -- to IPS-MP. We realize these reductions with an efficient IPS-MP-solver based on SeaHorn, and describe a application to smart-contract verification.

Abstract:We revisit two well-established verification techniques, k-induction and bounded model checking (BMC), in the more general setting of fixed point theory over complete lattices. Our main theoretical contribution is latticed k-induction, which (i) generalizes classical k-induction for verifying transition systems, (ii) generalizes Park induction for bounding fixed points of monotonic maps on complete lattices, and (iii) extends from naturals k to transfinite ordinals kappa, thus yielding kappa-induction. The lattice-theoretic understanding of k-induction and BMC enables us to apply both techniques to the fully automatic verification of infinite-state probabilistic programs. Our prototypical implementation manages to automatically verify non-trivial specifications for probabilistic programs taken from the literature that-using existing techniques-cannot be verified without synthesizing a stronger inductive invariant first.
A Proof-theoretic Semantics for Intuitionistic Linear Logic

Abstract:The approach taken by Gheorghiu, Gu and Pym in their paper on giving a Base-extension Semantics for Intuitionistic Multiplicative Linear Logic is an interesting adaptation of the work of Sandqvist for IPL to the substructural setting. What is particularly interesting is how naturally the move to the substructural setting provided a semantics for the multiplicative fragment of intuitionistic linear logic. Whilst ultimately the Gheorghiu, Gu and Pym used their foundations to provide a semantics for bunched implication logic, it begs the question, what of the rest of intuitionistic linear logic? In this paper, I present just such a semantics. This is particularly of interest as this logic has as a connective the bang, a modal connective. Capturing the inferentialist content of formulas marked with this connective is particularly challenging and a discussion is dedicated to this at the end of the paper.

Abstract:We investigate algebraically the fragment of the intuitionistic propositional calculus consisting of equivalence together with conjunction on the intuitionistic regularizations. We find that this fragment is strongly algebraizable with the equivalent algebraic semantics being the variety of equivalential algebras with an additional binary operation that can be interpreted as the meet on regular elements. We give a finite equational base for this variety, and investigate its properties, in particular the commutator. As applications, we prove that the fragment is hereditarily structurally complete and we describe the top of the lattice of its axiomatic extensions.

Abstract:Several authors have recently defined intuitionistic logic based on team semantics (tIPC). In this paper we provide two alternative approaches to intermediate logics in the team semantics setting. We do this by modifying tIPC with axioms written with two different versions of disjunction in the logic, a local one and global one. We prove a characterization theorem in the first approach and we introduce a generalized team semantics in the second one.

Abstract:The classical satisfiability problem (SAT) is used as a natural and general tool to express and solve combinatorial problems that are in NP. We postulate that provability for implicational intuitionistic propositional logic (IIPC) can serve as a similar natural tool to express problems in Pspace. This approach can be particularly convenient for two reasons. One is that provability in full IPC (with all connectives) can be reduced to provability of implicational formulas of order three. Another advantage is a convenient interpretation in terms of simple alternating automata. Additionally, we distinguish some natural subclasses of IIPC corresponding to the complexity classes NP and co-NP. Our experimental results show that a simple decision procedure requires a significant amount of time only in a small fraction of cases.

Abstract:We show in this paper a special extended logic, partition logic based on so called partition quantifiers, is able to capture some important complexity classes NP, P and NL by its natural fragments. The Fagin's Theorem and Immerman-Vardi's Theorem are rephrased and strengthened into a uniform partition logic setting. Also the dual operators for the partition quantifiers are introduced to expose some of their important model-theoretic properties. In particular they enable us to show a 0-1 law for the partition logic, even when finite variable infinitary logic is adjunct to it. As a consequence, partition logic cannot count without built-in ordering on structures. Considering its better theoretical properties and tools than those of second order logic, partition logic may provide us with an alternative, yet uniform insight for descriptive complexity.

Abstract:There are standard logics DTC, TC, and LFP capturing the complexity classes L, NL, and P on ordered structures, respectively. In [4] we have shown that LFP_{inv}, the ``order-invariant least fixed-point logic LFP,'' captures P (on all finite structures) if and only if there is a listing of the P subsets of the set TAUT of propositional tautologies. We are able to extend the result to listings of the L-subsets (NL-subsets) of TAUT and the logic DTC_{inv} (TC_{inv}). As a byproduct we get that LFP_{inv} captures P if DTC_{inv} captures L. Furthermore, we show that the existence of a listing of the L-subsets of TAUT is equivalent to the existence of an almost space optimal algorithm for TAUT. To obtain this result we have to derive a space version of a theorem of Levin on optimal inverters.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 3, Page 648-700, June 2024. We introduce the binary value principle, which is a simple subset-sum instance expressing that a natural number written in binary cannot be negative, relating it to central problems in proof and algebraic complexity. We prove conditional superpolynomial lower bounds on the Ideal Proof System (IPS) refutation size of this instance, based on a well-known hypothesis by Shub and Smale about the hardness of computing factorials, where IPS is the strong algebraic proof system introduced by Grochow and Pitassi [J. ACM, 65 (2018), 37]. Conversely, we show that short IPS refutations of this instance bridge the gap between sufficiently strong algebraic and semialgebraic proof systems. Our results extend to unrestricted IPS the paradigm introduced by Forbes, Shpilka, Tzameret, and Wigderson [Theory Comput., 17 (2021), pp. 1–88], whereby lower bounds against subsystems of IPS were obtained using restricted algebraic circuit lower bounds, and demonstrate that the binary value principle captures the advantage of semialgebraic over algebraic reasoning, for sufficiently strong systems. Specifically, we show the following. (1) Conditional IPS lower bounds: The Shub–Smale hypothesis [Duke Math. J., 81 (1995), pp. 47–54] implies a superpolynomial lower bound on the size of IPS refutations of the binary value principle over the rationals defined as the unsatisfiable linear equation [math] for Boolean [math]'s. Further, the related and more widely known [math]-conjecture [Duke Math. J., 81 (1995), pp. 47–54] implies a superpolynomial lower bound on the size of IPS refutations of a variant of the binary value principle over the ring of rational functions. No prior conditional lower bounds were known for IPS or apparently weaker propositional proof systems such as Frege systems (though our lower bounds do not translate to Frege lower bounds since the hard instances are not Boolean formulas). (2) Algebraic versus semialgebraic proofs: Admitting short refutations of the binary value principle is necessary for any algebraic proof system to fully simulate any known semialgebraic proof system, and for strong enough algebraic proof systems it is also sufficient. In particular, we introduce a very strong proof system that simulates all known semialgebraic proof systems (and most other known concrete propositional proof systems), under the name Cone Proof System (CPS), as a semialgebraic analogue of the IPS: CPS establishes the unsatisfiability of collections of polynomial equalities and inequalities over the reals, by representing sum-of-squares proofs (and extensions) as algebraic circuits. We prove that IPS polynomially simulates CPS iff IPS admits polynomial-size refutations of the binary value principle (for the language of systems of equations that have no 0/1-solutions), over both [math] and [math].

How to avoid the commuting conversions of IPC

Abstract:Since the observation in 2006 that it is possible to embed IPC into the atomic polymorphic lambda-calculus (a predicative fragment of system F with universal instantiations restricted to atomic formulas) different such embeddings appeared in the literature. All of them comprise the Russell-Prawitz translation of formulas, but have different strategies for the translation of proofs. Although these embeddings preserve proof identity, all fail in delivering preservation of reduction steps. In fact, they translate the commuting conversions of IPC to beta-equality, or to other kinds of reduction or equality generated by new principles added to system F. The cause for this is the generation of redexes by the translation itself. In this paper, we present an embedding of IPC into atomic system F, still based on the same translation of formulas, but which maps commuting conversions to syntactic identity, while simulating the other kinds of reduction steps present in IPC beta\eta-reduction. In this sense the translation achieves a truly commuting conversion-free image of IPC in atomic system F.

From Young's Lattice to Coinvariants

Abstract:Inspired by Vershik and Okounkov's inductive and Lie-theoretic approach to the representation theory of the symmetric group, we extend their point of view to reducible $S_n$-modules. Using induced representations along Young's lattice, we define an orthonormal weight basis for the regular representation of $S_n$ and use its rigidity to exhibit dualities between the left and right actions of $S_n$ and between restriction and induction of representations. We also show our weight basis is equivalent to the basis of matrix units corresponding to Young's seminormal form. We then realize $\mathbb{C}[S_n]$ in a subspace of the polynomial ring $R[z_1, \ldots , z_n]$. The induced weight decomposition allows us to map this subspace of polynomials to the ring of coinvariants, similar to the work of Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada on higher Specht polynomials but perhaps a bit more intrinsic as we work in terms of an orthonormal basis. Our construction makes explicit the connection between the charge statistic on standard tableaux (which corresponds to degree in the coinvariant ring) and the action of adjacent transpositions on weight vectors in the seminormal representation of $S_n$. It also exposes the inductive structure of $S_n$ hidden in the coinvariant ring. All our constructions are elementary, and we are curious about their geometric meaning.

Ordinal Motifs in Lattices

Abstract:Lattices are a commonly used structure for the representation and analysis of relational and ontological knowledge. In particular, the analysis of these requires a decomposition of a large and high-dimensional lattice into a set of understandably large parts. With the present work we propose /ordinal motifs/ as analytical units of meaning. We study these ordinal substructures (or standard scales) through (full) scale-measures of formal contexts from the field of formal concept analysis. We show that the underlying decision problems are NP-complete and provide results on how one can incrementally identify ordinal motifs to save computational effort. Accompanying our theoretical results, we demonstrate how ordinal motifs can be leveraged to retrieve basic meaning from a medium sized ordinal data set.
