Abstract:Consider a modular curve $X_G$ defined over a number field $K$, where $G$ is a subgroup of $GL_2(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})$ with $N>2$. The curve $X_G$ comes with a morphism $j: X_G\to \mathbb{P}^1_K=\mathbb{A}^1_K \cup\{\infty\}$ to the $j$-line. For a finite set of places $S$ of $K$ that satisfies a certain condition, Runge's method shows that there are only finitely many points $P \in X_G(K)$ for which $j(P)$ lies in the ring $\mathfrak{O}_{K,S}$ of $S$-units of $K$. We prove an explicit version which shows that if $j(P)\in \mathfrak{O}_{K,S}$ for some $P\in X_G(K)$, then the absolute logarithmic height of $j(P)$ is bounded above by $N^{12} \log N$. Explicits upper bounds have already been obtained by Bilu and Parent though they are not polynomial in $N$. The modular functions needed to apply Runge's method are constructing using Eisenstein series of weight $1$.

Abstract:Working over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic we study, for integers $N\geq 2$ and $g\geq 2$, the set of points of order dividing $N$ lying on an irreducible smooth proper curve of genus $g$ embedded in its jacobian using a fixed base point. We discuss bounds on its cardinality and describe an efficient method for computing the set. Our method uses wronskians similar to those used in the study of Weierstrass points and the strength of our bounds is related to whether or not a certain multiple of the curve is contained in the negative of the theta divisor. Several examples are discussed. This generalizes our previous work [<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1216/rmj.2023.53.357" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>] dealing with the case of hyperelliptic curves embedded in their jacobian using a Weierstrass point as base point.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, $S$ a finite set of places. For $\mathbb{G}_m$ or an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $K$, we establish uniformity results on the number of $S$-integral torsion points relative to a non-torsion point $\beta$, as $\beta$ varies over number fields of bounded degree. In particular for $\mathbb{G}_m$, if $D$ is a positive integer, we prove a uniform bound on the degree of a torsion point $\zeta$ that is $S$-integral relative to a non-torsion point $\beta$ with degree $\leq D$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be an order in the imaginary quadratic field $K$. For positive integers $M \mid N$, we determine the least degree of an $\mathcal{O}$-CM point on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/K(\zeta_M)}$ and also on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_M)}$: that is, we treat both the case in which the complex multiplication is rationally defined and the case in which we do not assume that the complex multiplication is rationally defined. To prove these results we establish several new theorems on rational cyclic isogenies of CM elliptic curves. In particular, we extend a result of Kwon that determines the set of positive integers $N$ for which there is an $\mathcal{O}$-CM elliptic curve $E$ admitting a cyclic, $\mathbb{Q}(j(E))$-rational $N$-isogeny.

Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic distribution of integrals of the $j$-function that are associated to ideal classes in a real quadratic field. To estimate the error term in our asymptotic formula, we prove a bound for sums of Kloosterman sums of half-integral weight that is uniform in every parameter. To establish this estimate we prove a variant of Kuznetsov's formula where the spectral data is restricted to half-integral weight forms in the Kohnen plus space, and we apply Young's hybrid subconvexity estimates for twisted modular $L$-functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an intersection-theoretic result pertaining to curves in certain Hilbert modular surfaces in positive characteristic p . Specifically, let C , D be two proper curves inside a mod p Hilbert modular surface associated to a real quadratic field split at p . Suppose that the curves are generically ordinary, and that at least one of them is ample. Then, the set of points in with abelian surfaces parameterized by x and y isogenous to each other is Zariski dense in , thereby proving a case of a just-likely intersection conjecture. We also compute the change in Faltings height under appropriate p -power isogenies of abelian surfaces with real multiplication over characteristic p global fields.

We illustrate these methods for a representation of cardinal interest in number theory, namely that of the split orthogonal group acting on the space of quadratic forms.

Abstract:We prove that the number of curves of a fixed genus g over finite fields is a polynomial function of the size of the field if and only if g is at most 8. Furthermore, we determine for each positive genus g the smallest n such that the moduli space of curves of genus g with n marked points does not have polynomial point count. A key ingredient in the proofs, which is also a new result of independent interest, is the computation of the thirteenth cohomology group of the moduli spaces of stable curves of genus g with n marked points, for all g and n.

Abstract:In this article, we combine Bhargava's geometry-of-numbers methods with the dynamical point-counting methods of Eskin--McMullen and Benoist--Oh to develop a new technique for counting integral points on symmetric varieties lying within fundamental domains for coregular representations. As applications, we study the distribution of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group in thin families of cubic number fields, as well as the distribution of the $2$-Selmer groups in thin families of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. For example, our results suggest that the existence of a generator of the ring of integers with small norm has an increasing effect on the average size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group, relative to the Cohen--Lenstra predictions.

Quantum Statistical Mechanics and the Boundary of Modular Curves

Abstract:The theory of limiting modular symbols provides a noncommutative geometric model of the boundary of modular curves that includes irrational points in addition to cusps. A noncommutative space associated to this boundary is constructed, as part of a family of noncommutative spaces associated to different continued fractions algorithms, endowed with the structure of a quantum statistical mechanical system. Two special cases of this family of quantum systems can be interpreted as a boundary of the system associated to the Shimura variety of $GL_2$ and an analog for $SL_2$. The structure of KMS states for this family of systems is discussed. In the geometric cases, the ground states evaluated on boundary arithmetic elements are given by pairings of cusp forms and limiting modular symbols.

Integral points on coarse Hilbert moduli schemes

Abstract:We continue our study of integral points on moduli schemes by combining the method of Faltings (Arakelov, Parsin, Szpiro) with modularity results and Masser-Wüstholz isogeny estimates. In this work we explicitly bound the height and the number of integral points on coarse Hilbert moduli schemes outside the branch locus. In the first part we define and study coarse Hilbert moduli schemes with their heights and branch loci. In the second part we establish the effective Shafarevich conjecture for abelian varieties $A$ over a number field $K$ such that $A_{\bar{K}}$ has CM or $A_{\bar{K}}$ is of GL2-type and isogenous to all its $G_\mathbb Q$-conjugates. In the third part we continue our explicit study of the Parsin construction given by the forgetful morphism of Hilbert moduli schemes. We now work out our strategy for arbitrary number fields $K$ and we explicitly bound the number of polarizations and module structures on abelian varieties over $K$ with real multiplications. In the last part we illustrate our results by applying them to two classical surfaces first studied by Clebsch (1871) and Klein (1873): We explicitly bound the Weil height and the number of their integral points.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that certain points in the Hecke orbit of a CM point in the Siegel modular variety do not lie in the open Torelli locus under suitable conditions on the field of definition and the CM factors that arise in the corresponding CM abelian variety. The proof is a combination of properties of stable Faltings height and known cases of the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and is motivated by an analogue over function fields proved by Kukulies. We also discuss the relation of our result with questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and refine a previous result showing that certain Shimura subvarieties of unitary type in the Siegel modular variety only meet the open Torelli locus in dimension zero.

Abstract:We determine all the quadratic points on the genus $13$ modular curve $X_0(163)$, thus completing the answer to a recent question of Banwait, the second-named author, and Padurariu. In doing so, we investigate a curious phenomenon involving a cubic point with complex multiplication on the curve $X_0(163)$. This cubic point prevents us, due to computational restraints, from directly applying the state-of-the-art Atkin--Lehner sieve for computing quadratic points on modular curves $X_0(N)$. To overcome this issue, we introduce a technique which allows us to work with the Jacobian of curves modulo primes by directly computing linear equivalence relations between divisors.

Abstract:By using algebraic number theory method and p-adic analysis method, we find all integral points on certain elliptic curvesy(2) = (x + a)(x(2) + bx + c), a,b,c is an element of Z, b(2) < 4c.Furthermore, we can find all integer solutions of certain hyperelliptic equationsDy-2 = Ax(4) + Bx(2) + C, B-2 < 4AC.As a particular example, we give a complete solution of the equation which was proposed by Zagiery(2) = x(3) - 9x + 28by this method. In Appendix I and Appendix II, we give the computational method of finding the fundamental unit and factorizing quadratic algebraic number in the subring of a totally complex quartic field, respectively.
