Abstract:We propose in this note the study of quantum channels from association schemes. This is done by interpreting the (0,1)-matrices of a scheme as the Kraus operators of a channel. Working in the framework of one-shot zero-error information theory, we give bounds and closed formulas for various independence numbers of the relative non-commutative (confusability) graphs, or, equivalently, graphical operator systems. We use pseudocyclic association schemes as an example. In this case, we show that the unitary entanglement-assisted independence number grows at least quadratically faster, with respect to matrix size, than the independence number. The latter parameter was introduced by Beigi and Shor as a generalization of the one-shot Shannon capacity, in analogy with the corresponding graph-theoretic notion.

Abstract:We identify and characterize all the local quantum channels that preserves the set of classical states, i.e., does not create any quantum correlations. At first we show that the quantum correlations cannot be created from without if and only if the local quantum channel preserves the commutativity, i.e., the images of any two commuting states also commute. And then we provide an operational necessary and sufficient criterion for a known quantum channel to preserve the commutativity as well as a single observable to witness an arbitrary unknown commutativity-preserving channel. All the distance-based measures for quantum correlations, e.g., the geometric measure, are non-increasing while the quantum discord defined by von Neumann measurements can be increasing or decreasing under local commutativity-preserving channels.

Abstract:The most basic local conversion is local operations and classical communications (LOCC), which is also the most natural restriction in quantum information processing. We investigate the conversions between the ground states in quantum critical systems via LOCC and propose an novel method to reveal the different convertibility via majorization relation when a quantum phase transition occurs. The ground-state local convertibility in the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model is studied. It is shown that the LOCC convertibility changes nearly at the phase transition point. The relation between the order of quantum phase transitions and the LOCC convertibility is discussed. Our results are compared with the corresponding results using the Renyi entropy and the LOCC convertibility with assisted entanglement.
Majorization ladder in bosonic Gaussian channels

Abstract:We show the existence of a majorization ladder in bosonic Gaussian channels, that is, we prove that the channel output resulting from the $n\text{th}$ energy eigenstate (Fock state) majorizes the channel output resulting from the $(n\!+\!1)\text{th}$ energy eigenstate (Fock state). This reflects a remarkable link between the energy at the input of the channel and a disorder relation at its output as captured by majorization theory. This result was previously known in the special cases of a pure-loss channel and quantum-limited amplifier, and we achieve here its nontrivial generalization to any single-mode phase-covariant (or -contravariant) bosonic Gaussian channel. The key to our proof is the explicit construction of a column-stochastic matrix that relates the outputs of the channel for any two subsequent Fock states at its input. This is made possible by exploiting a recently found recurrence relation on multiphoton transition probabilities for Gaussian unitaries [M. G. Jabbour and N. J. Cerf, Phys. Rev. Research 3, 043065 (2021)]. Possible generalizations and implications of these results are then discussed.

Fock majorization in bosonic quantum channels with a passive environment

Abstract:We introduce a class of quantum channels called passive-environment bosonic channels. These channels are relevant from a quantum thermodynamical viewpoint because they correspond to the energy-preserving linear coupling of a bosonic system with a bosonic environment that is in a passive state (no energy can be extracted from it with a unitary transformation) followed by discarding the environment. The Fock-majorization relation defined in Jabbour et al (2016 New J. Phys. 18 073047) happens to be particularly useful in this context as, unlike regular majorization, it connects the disorder of a state together with its energy. Our main result here is the preservation of Fock-majorization across all passive-environment bosonic channels. This implies a similar preservation for regular majorization over the set of passive states, and also extends to the passive-environment bosonic channels whose Stinespring dilation involves an active Gaussian unitary. Beyond bosonic systems, the class of passive-environment operations as defined here naturally generalizes the set of thermal operations and is expected to provide new insights into the thermodynamics of quantum systems.

Abstract:The majorization theory has been applied to analyze the mathematical structure of quantum algorithms. An empirical conclusion by numerical simulations obtained in the previous literature indicates that step-by-step majorization seems to appear universally in quantum adiabatic algorithms. In this paper, a rigorous analysis of the majorization arrow in a special class of quantum adiabatic algorithms is carried out. In particular, we prove that for any adiabatic algorithm of this class, step-by-step majorization of the ground state holds exactly. For the actual state, we show that step-by-step majorization holds approximately, and furthermore that the longer the running time of the algorithm, the better the approximation.

Abstract:We study the Majorization arrow in a big class of quantum adiabatic algorithms. In a quantum adiabatic algorithm, the ground state of the Hamiltonian is a guide state around which the actual state evolves. We prove that for any algorithm of this class, step-by-step majorization of the guide state holds perfectly. We also show that step-by-step majorization of the actual state appears if the running time becomes longer and longer. This supports the empirical viewpoint that step-by-step majorization seems to appear universally in quantum adiabatic algorithms. On the other hand, the performance of these algorithms discussed in this paper can all be estimated, which is exponential in the problem size. This can be looked as a strong evidence that step-by-step majorization is not a sufficient condition for efficiency.

Abstract:Quantum systems are vulnerable against environmental interactions which may result in depletion of potential resources. The decay in the resources may be to the extent that they cannot be retrieved even with a non-local unitary action on the whole system. Two important figure of merits in the context of quantum information are the fully entangled fraction (FEF) and conditional entropy of a composite quantum system. While FEF plays a key role in teleportation, negativity of conditional entropy assumes significance in state merging and dense coding. A state may lose such merits and may move to an absolute regime, where even a global unitary fails to reclaim those merits. In the present work, we probe the action of some quantum channels in two qubits and two qudits and find that some quantum states move to the absolute regime under the action. Since global unitary operations are unable to retrieve them back to the non-absolute regime, we provide a prescription for the retrieval using an entanglement swapping network. We also provide an explicit illustration of our prescription. Furthermore, we extend the notion of absoluteness to conditional Rényi entropies and find the required condition for a state to have absolute conditional Rényi entropy non-negative property. Exploiting the Bloch-Fano decomposition of density matrices, we characterize such states. We then extend the work to include the marginals of a tripartite system and provide for their characterization with respect to the aforementioned absolute properties.

Abstract:We consider quantum channels with two senders and one receiver. For an arbitrary such channel, we give multi-letter characterizations of two different two-dimensional capacity regions. The first region is comprised of the rates at which it is possible for one sender to send classical information, while the other sends quantum information. The second region consists of the rates at which each sender can send quantum information. For each region, we give an example of a channel for which the corresponding region has a single-letter description. One of our examples relies on a new result proved here, perhaps of independent interest, stating that the coherent information over any degradable channel is concave in the input density operator. We conclude with connections to other work and a discussion on generalizations where each user simultaneously sends classical and quantum information.

Qubit magic-breaking channels

Abstract:We develop a notion of quantum channels that can make states useless for universal quantum computation by destroying their magic (non-stabilizerness) - we refer to them as magic-breaking channels. We establish the properties of these channels in arbitrary dimensions. We prove the necessary and sufficient criteria for qubit channels to be magic-breaking and present an algorithm for determining the same. Moreover, we provide compact criteria in terms of the parameters for several classes of qubit channels to be magic-breaking under various post-processing operations. Further, we investigate the necessary and sufficient conditions for the tensor product of multiple qubit channels to be magic-breaking. We establish implications of the same for the dynamical resource theory of magic preservability.

The noisy Landau-Streater(Werner-Holevo) channel in arbitrary dimensions

Abstract:Two important classes of quantum channels, namly the Werner-Holevo and the Landau-Streater channels are known to be related only in three dimensions, i.e. when acting on qutrits. In this work, definition of the Landau-Streater channel is extended in such a way which retains its equivalence to the Werner-Holevo channel in all dimensions. This channel is then modified to be representable as a model of noise acting on qudits. We then investigate propeties of the resulting noisy channel and determine the conditions under which it cannot be the result of a Markovian evolution. Furthermore, we investigate its different capacities for transmitting classical and quantum information with or without entanglement. In particular, while the pure (or high noise) Landau-Streater or the Werner-Holevo channel is entanglement breaking and hence has zero capacity, by finding a lower bound for the quantum capacity, we show that when the level of noise is lower than a critical value the quantum capacity will be non-zero. Surprizingly this value turns out to be approximately equal to $0.4$ in all dimensions. Finally we show that, in even dimension, this channel has a decomposition in terms of unitary operations. This is in contrast with the three dimensional case where it has been proved that such a decomposition is impossible, even in terms of other quantum maps.

Abstract:Quantum channel, as the information transmitter, is an indispensable tool in quantum information theory. In this paper, we study a class of special quantum channels named the mixed-permutation channels . The properties of these channels are characterized. The mixed-permutation channels can be applied to give a lower bound of quantum coherence with respect to any coherence measure. In particular, the analytical lower bounds for -norm coherence and the relative entropy of coherence are shown, respectively. The extension to bipartite systems is presented for the actions of the mixed-permutation channels.

Abstract:We consider the problem of transmitting classical and quantum information reliably over an entanglement-assisted quantum channel. Our main result is a capacity theorem that gives a three-dimensional achievable rate region. Points in the region are rate triples, consisting of the classical communication rate, the quantum communication rate, and the entanglement consumption rate of a particular coding scheme. The crucial protocol in achieving the boundary points of the capacity region is a protocol that we name the classically-enhanced father protocol. The classically-enhanced father protocol is more general than other protocols in the family tree of quantum Shannon theoretic protocols, in the sense that several previously known quantum protocols are now child protocols of it. The classically-enhanced father protocol also shows an improvement over a time-sharing strategy for the case of a qubit dephasing channel--this result justifies the need for simultaneous coding of classical and quantum information over an entanglement-assisted quantum channel. Our capacity theorem is of a multi-letter nature (requiring a limit over many uses of the channel), but it reduces to a single-letter characterization for at least three channels: the completely depolarizing channel, the quantum erasure channel, and the qubit dephasing channel.

An upper bound on quantum capacity of unital channels

Abstract:We analyze the quantum capacity of a unital quantum channel, using ideas from the proof of near-optimality of Petz recovery map [Barnum and Knill 2000] and give an upper bound on the quantum capacity in terms of regularized output $2$-norm of the channel. We also show that any code attempting to exceed this upper bound must incur large error in decoding, which can be viewed as a weaker version of the strong converse results for quantum capacity. As an application, we find nearly matching upper and lower bounds (up to an additive constant) on the quantum capacity of quantum expander channels. Using these techniques, we further conclude that the `mixture of random unitaries' channels arising in the construction of quantum expanders in [Hastings 2007] show a trend in multiplicativity of output $2$-norm similar to that exhibited in [Montanaro 2013] for output $\infty$-norm of random quantum channels.

Abstract:Mutual information of quantum channel is a natural extension of a basic concept in quantum information theory that of measuring the correlation of a composite quantum state. We first propose the mutual information of quantum channel based on max-relative entropy in multiple ways. We find that these quantities obey the data processing inequality under the action of superchannel. The super-additivity of mutual max-information of quantum channel is studied. Then, we investigate the corresponding smooth versions of mutual max-information of quantum channel, which also obey the data processing inequality under superchannel. We derive consistent lower and upper bounds for different one-shot testing channel s mutual max-information in terms of the mutual information of output state through such channel. Furthermore, these bounds allow us to provide an alternative approach to prove the asymptotic equipartition property (AEP) for quantum channel s smooth mutual max-information. Finally, by using this AEP, we obtain a channel version of the quantum Stein's lemma when discriminating between a large number of independent arbitrary channels and some special replacer channels.

Abstract:At present, quantum channels have been widely concerned, and many ways to quantify quantum channels have been proposed, which has led to the generation of many resource theories for quantum channels. We add strong monotonicity and convexity to the requirement of imaginarity measure of quantum channels to make the measure proper. We also introduce an alternative framework to simplify the process of verifying whether a quantifier is a proper measure. We present three imaginarity measures of quantum channels via on the robustness, the trace norm and entropy, respectively. Some properties are also given.

Abstract:Quantum channels can be described via a unitary coupling of system and environment, followed by a trace over the environment state space. Taking the trace instead over the system state space produces a different mapping which we call the conjugate channel. We explore the properties of conjugate channels and describe several different methods of construction. In general, conjugate channels map M_d to M_d' with d < d', and different constructions may differ by conjugation with a partial isometry. We show that a channel and its conjugate have the same minimal output entropy and maximal output p-norm. It then follows that the additivity and multiplicativity conjectures for these measures of optimal output purity hold for a product of channels if and only if they also hold for the product of their conjugates. This allows us to reduce these conjectures to the special case of maps taking M_d to M_d' with a minimal representation of dimension at most d. We find explicit expressions for the conjugates for a number of well-known examples, including entanglement-breaking channels, unital qubit channels, the depolarizing channel, and a subclass of random unitary channels. For the entanglement-breaking channels, channels this yields a new class of channels for which additivity and multiplicativity of optimal output purity can be established. For random unitary channels using the generalized Pauli matrices, we obtain a new formulation of the multiplicativity conjecture. The conjugate of the completely noisy channel plays a special role and suggests a mechanism for using noise to transmit information.
