Abstract:The improved GE method has been used to evaluate the spatial-domain Green's function of the shielded structures. However, for some cases, the spectral-domain Green's function decays slowly and is very difficult to be accurately approximated by the GPOF used in the improved GE method. This subsequently deteriorates the accuracy and stability of this method. In this paper, we devise a scheme that the GPOF is applied for multiple times to approximate the spectral-domain Green's function. Numerical results have shown that the spectral-domain Green's function can be better approximated and thus the accuracy of spatial-domain Green's function is improved. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:<p>In electronic structure and quantum transport calculations, many physical quantities are integrations over the electron energy, weighted by the Fermi-Dirac distribution function. Green's function based approaches commonly circumvent the numerically difficult real energy integration by extending the integrand analytically into the complex energy plane, and using a Gaussian quadrature integration over a complex energy contour for zero temperature. For finite temperatures, a much slower convergent sum over the Matsubara frequencies is necessary. We present a generalized quadrature method that uses orthogonal polynomials on the manifold of Matsubara frequencies to enable rapid convergence. Both Gaussian quadrature integration and Matsubara frequency summation methods are shown to be limiting cases of the generalized method. Tests on an all-electron <em>ab initio</em> code and total energy calculation of interacting Anderson impurity model show convergence with a small number of energy mesh points.</p>

Real-space Green's function approach for x-ray spectra at finite temperature

Abstract:There has been considerable interest in properties of condensed matter at finite temperature, including non-equilibrium behavior and extreme conditions up to the warm dense matter regime. Such behavior is encountered, e.g., in experimental time resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in the presence of intense laser fields. In an effort to simulate such behavior, we present an approach for calculations of finite-temperature x-ray absorption spectra in arbitrary materials, using a generalization of the real-space Green's function formalism. The method is incorporated as an option in the core-level x-ray spectroscopy code FEFF10. To illustrate the approach, we present calculations for several materials together with comparisons to experiment and with other methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new analytic continuation method to extract real frequency spectral functions from imaginary frequency Green's functions of quantum many-body systems. This method is based on the pole representation of Matsubara Green's function and a stochastic sampling procedure is utilized to optimize the amplitudes and locations of poles. In order to capture narrow peaks and sharp band edges in the spectral functions, a constrained sampling algorithm and a self-adaptive sampling algorithm are developed. To demonstrate the usefulness and performance of the new method, we at first apply it to study the spectral functions of representative fermionic and bosonic correlators. Then we employ this method to tackle the analytic continuation problems of matrix-valued Green's functions. The synthetic Green's functions, as well as realistic correlation functions from finite temperature quantum many-body calculations, are used as input. The benchmark results demonstrate that this method is capable of reproducing most of the key characteristics in the spectral functions. The sharp, smooth, and multi-peak features in both low-frequency and high-frequency regions of spectral functions could be accurately resolved, which overcomes one of the main limitations of the traditional maximum entropy method. More importantly, it exhibits excellent robustness with respect to noisy and incomplete input data. The causality of spectral function is always satisfied even in the presence of sizable noises. As a byproduct, this method could derive a fitting formula for the Matsubara data, which provides a compact approximation to the many-body Green's functions. Hence, we expect that this new method could become a pivotal workhorse for numerically analytic continuation and be broadly useful in many applications.

Abstract:In the present work, a three-dimensional fictitious domain method for particulate flows with heat transfer is proposed. For the case of fixed particle temperature, an iterative scheme for the temperature Lagrange multiplier is proposed, in order to determine its initial value and overcome the spurious oscillation of the explicit scheme at the initial time stage for different initial fluid and particle temperatures. Both explicit and implicit schemes are proposed for the solution of coupled fluid and solid temperature equations in the case of freely evolving particle temperature. The implicit scheme is suited to the case of large density ratios, specific heat ratios, or thermal conductivity ratios. Our method for the case of fixed particle temperature is verified via the test problems of a stationary hot sphere heating the surrounding quiescent fluid, a fixed sphere, and spheroid, respectively, in uniform flow, and sedimentation of a sphere and spheroid, respectively, in a vertical channel. We propose a new correlation of particle Nusselt number for an isolated sphere in a relatively small domain. Our code for the case of varying particle temperatures is verified via the effective thermal conductivity of a motionless sphere and the rising of a catalyst particle in an enclosure. Our method is applied to the sedimentation of a sphere at different Grashof numbers, specific heat ratios, and conductivity ratios. In addition, some preliminary results on heat transfer in turbulent channel flows laden with neutrally buoyant spherical and spheroidal particles, respectively, from fully resolved simulations with our method are reported.

Abstract:One-particle Green's function methods can model molecular and solid spectra at zero or non-zero temperatures. One-particle Green's functions directly provide electronic energies and one-particle properties, such as dipole moment. However, the evaluation of two-particle properties, such as $\langle{S^2}\rangle$ and $\langle{N^2}\rangle$ can be challenging, because they require a solution of the computationally expensive Bethe--Salpeter equation to find two-particle Green's functions. We demonstrate that the solution of the Bethe--Salpeter equation can be complitely avoided. Applying the thermodynamic Hellmann--Feynman theorem to self-consistent one-particle Green's function methods, we derive expressions for two-particle density matrices in a general case and provide explicit expressions for GF2 and GW methods. Such density matrices can be decomposed into an antisymmetrized product of correlated one-electron density matrices and the two-particle electronic cumulant of the density matrix. Cumulant expressions reveal a deviation from ensemble representability for GW, explaining its known deficiencies. We analyze the temperature dependence of $\langle{S^2}\rangle$ and $\langle{N^2}\rangle$ for a set of small closed-shell systems. Interestingly, both GF2 and GW show a non-zero spin contamination and a non-zero fluctuation of the number of particles for closed-shell systems at the zero-temperature limit.

Efficient temperature-dependent Green's functions methods for realistic systems: compact grids for orthogonal polynomial transforms

Abstract:The temperature-dependent Matsubara Green's function that is used to describe temperature-dependent behavior is expressed on a numerical grid. While such a grid usually has a couple of hundred points for low-energy model systems, for realistic systems in large basis sets the size of an accurate grid can be tens of thousands of points, constituting a severe computational and memory bottleneck. In this paper, we determine efficient imaginary time grids for the temperature-dependent Matsubara Green's function formalism that can be used for calculations on realistic systems. We show that due to the use of orthogonal polynomial transform, we can restrict the imaginary time grid to few hundred points and reach micro-Hartree accuracy in the electronic energy evaluation. Moreover, we show that only a limited number of orthogonal polynomial expansion coefficients are necessary to preserve accuracy when working with a dual representation of Green's function or self-energy and transforming between the imaginary time and Matsubara frequency domain.

Abstract:The Fano spectrum decomposition (FSD) scheme is proposed as an efficient and accurate sum-over-poles expansion of Fermi and Bose functions at cryogenic temperatures. The new method practically overcomes the discontinuity of Fermi and Bose functions near zero temperature, which causes slow convergence in conventional schemes such as the state-of-the-art Padé spectrum decomposition (PSD). The FSD scheme fragments Fermi or Bose function into a high-temperature reference and a low-temperature correction. While the former is efficiently decomposed via the standard PSD, the latter can be accurately described by several modified Fano functions. The resulting FSD scheme is found to converge overwhelmingly faster than the standard PSD method. Remarkably, the low-temperature correction supports further a recursive and scalable extension to access the near-zero temperature regime. Thus, the proposed FSD scheme, which obeys rather simple recursive relations, has a great value in efficient numerical evaluations of Fermi or Bose function-involved integrals for various low-temperature condensed physics formulations and problems. For numerical demonstrations, we exemplify FSD for the efficient unraveling of fermionic reservoir correlation functions and the exact hierarchical equations of motion simulations of spin-boson dynamics, both at extremely low temperatures.

Abstract:A least-squares collocation meshless method is employed for solving the radiative heat transfer in absorbing, emitting and scattering media. The least-squares collocation meshless method for radiative transfer is based on the discrete ordinates equation. A moving least-squares approximation is applied to construct the trial functions. Except for the collocation points which are used to construct the trial functions, a number of auxiliary points are also adopted to form the total residuals of the problem. The least-squares technique is used to obtain the solution of the problem by minimizing the summation of residuals of all collocation and auxiliary points. Three numerical examples are studied to illustrate the performance of this new solution method. The numerical results are compared with the other benchmark approximate solutions. By comparison, the results show that the least-squares collocation meshless method is efficient, accurate and stable, and can be used for solving the radiative heat transfer in absorbing, emitting and scattering media.

Abstract:A rational expansion of the Fermi density operator is proposed. This approach allows us to calculate efficiently the physical properties of fermionic systems at finite temperatures without solving an eigenvalue problem. UsingNevaluations of the Green's function, the Fermi density operator can be approximated, subject to a given precision, in the energy interval [β, ∞] with β ∝ N. The presented method may become especially useful for electronic structure calculations involving the calculation of charge densities, but it may also find other applications in, e.g., signal processing and numerical linear algebra.

Abstract:A least-squares radial point interpolation collocation meshless method based on the discrete ordinates equation is developed for solving the radiative transfer in absorbing, emitting, and scattering media, in which compact support radial basis functions augmented with polynomial basis are employed to construct the trial functions. In addition to the collocation nodes, a number of auxiliary points are also adopted to form the total residuals of the problem. The least-squares technique is used to obtain the solution of the problem by minimizing the summation of residuals of all collocation and auxiliary points. Three typical examples of radiative transfer in semitransparent media are examined to verify this new solution method. The numerical results are compared with other benchmark approximate solutions in references. By comparison, the results show that the least-squares radial point interpolation collocation meshless method has good accuracy in solving radiative transfer problems within absorbing, emitting, and scattering media.

Abstract:On the basis of the Kadanoff-Baym (KB) varient of the time dependent Green's function method a new ansatz for the approximation of a spectral function is offered. The ansatz possesses all the advantages of quasiparticle (QP) and extended quasiparticle (EQP) approximations and satisfies the KB equation for a spectral function in the case of slightly nonequilibrium system when disturbances in space and time are taken into consideration in the gradient approximation. This feature opens new opportunities for the microscopic derivation of the Landau kinetic equation for the quasiparticle distribution function of the normal fermi liquid and provides the widening of these equation's temperature rang of validity.

Abstract:This paper presents a modified least-squares finite element method for solving the Boltzmann transport equation with spherical harmonics angular approximation (LSPN). Traditional LSPN methods usually adopt weakly imposed boundary conditions which contain an uncertain parameter and it may lead to inaccurate results without proper scaling for problems with sharp cross section interfaces. In order to eliminate the discretization error at material interface and use continuous interface condition, we multiply a scaling parameter to least-squares term and add the weak form of the first-order transport equation. With this method, the natural boundary condition can be applied directly and the scaling parameter is identified as the minimal value of characteristic length of element and the reciprocal of removal cross section. The method is verified by various benchmark problems and the numerical results show it has high accuracy, stability and void applicability. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Relativistic mean field theory is formulated with the Green's function method in coordinate space to investigate the single-particle bound states and resonant states on the same footing. Taking the density of states for free particles as a reference, the energies and widths of single-particle resonant states are extracted from the density of states without any ambiguity. As an example, the energies and widths for single-neutron resonant states in Sn-120 are compared with those obtained by the scattering phase-shift method, the analytic continuation in the coupling constant approach, the real stabilization method, and the complex scaling method. Excellent agreements with these methods are found for the energies and widths of single-neutron resonant states.

Abstract:To compute the effective properties of random heterogeneous materials, a number of different boundary conditions are used to define the apparent properties on cells of finite size. Typically, depending on the specific boundary condition, different numerical methods are used. The article at hand provides a unified framework for Lippmann–Schwinger solvers in thermal conductivity and Dirichlet (prescribed temperature), Neumann (prescribed normal heat flux) as well as periodic boundary conditions. We focus on the explicit jump finite‐difference discretization and discuss different techniques for computing the discrete Green's operator. These include Fourier‐type methods, that is, based on discrete sine, cosine and Fourier transformations, as well as low‐rank tensor methods, that is, the tensor‐train approximation, whose computational prowess was demonstrated recently. We use the developed computational technology to investigate a number of interesting random materials and assess different microstructure‐generation techniques in terms of their compatibility with the prescribed boundary conditions.

Abstract:A wide range of analytical and numerical methods are available to study quantum spin systems. However, the complexity of spin correlations and interactions limits their applicability to specific temperature ranges. The analytical approach utilizing Green’s function has proved advantageous, as it allows for formulation without restrictions on the presence of long-range order and facilitates estimation of the spin excitation spectrum and thermodynamic quantities across the entire temperature range. In this work, we present a generalized formulation of the Green’s function method that can be applied to diverse spin systems. The notable aspect of our approach is that the theory aligns with the high-temperature expansion results in the high-temperature regime. When the spatial dimension d is d ≥ 3, our formulation effectively describes the magnetic long-range order as Bose–Einstein condensation occurring at the wave vector characteristic of the magnetic long-range order. As an application to a frustrated spin system, we consider the J1–J2 model on the square lattice, incorporating nematic correlations. While our approach may not be robust enough to determine the ground state properties, it is capable of describing short-range correlations at finite temperatures to a certain extent. In the presence of strong frustration, accurate numerical calculations become essential. Within this framework, we compute the specific heat, the spin susceptibility, and the spin-wave gaps at characteristic wave vectors, and discuss the effects of frustration. Our primary focus here is on the spin one-half antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on an arbitrary lattice. However, the Green’s function approach can be extended to include other types of interactions and accommodate higher spin values.

Abstract:A discrete ordinates finite-element method for solving three-dimensional first-order neutron transport equation is proposed using a least-squares variation. It avoids the singularity in void regions of the method derived from the second-order equation. Different from using the standard Galerkin variation applying to the first-order equation, the least-squares variation results in a symmetric matrix, which can be solved easily and effectively. The approach allows a continuous finite-element. To eliminate the discontinuity of the angular flux on the fixed flux boundary in the spherical harmonics method, the equation is discretized using the discrete ordinates method for angular dependency. A three-dimensional transport simulation code is developed and applied to some benchmark problems with unstructured geometry. The numerical results demonstrate the accuracy and feasibility of the method.

Although our focus is on the spin one-half antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on an arbitrary lattice, the Green's function approach can be generalized to incorporate other interactions and higher spin values.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a heat jet approach for atomic simulations at finite temperature of a triangular lattice. First we design a matching boundary condition by carefully examining a residual function based on the lattice dispersion relation. It leads to a two-way boundary condition, where prescribed incoming waves are included with a source term. Meanwhile, we adopt a phonon representation to determine Fourier mode amplitudes. The heat jet approach is then formulated by combining the two-way boundary condition and the phonon representation of heat source. Numerical tests of a tube-shaped computational domain illustrate the accuracy and effectiveness in simultaneously resolving thermal fluctuations and non-thermal motion at a given temperature.
Solving the Bethe-Salpeter Equation in Real Frequencies at Finite Temperature

Abstract:Self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation combined with solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation offers a powerful tool for studies of strong correlation effects arising in condensed matter models, nuclear physics, quantum field theories, and real materials. The standard finite-temperature approach would be to first solve the problem in the Matsubara representation and then apply numerical analytic continuation to the real-frequency axis to link theoretical results with experimental probes, but this ill-conditioned procedure often distorts important spectral features even for very accurate imaginary-frequency data. We demonstrate that the ladder-type finite-temperature Bethe-Salpeter equation in the Hartree-Fock basis for the 3-point vertex function and, ultimately, system's polarization can be accurately solved directly on the real frequency axis using the diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique and series resummation. We illustrate the method by applying it to the homogeneous electron gas model and demonstrate how multiple scattering events renormalize Landau damping.
