Abstract:We give the bridge indices for 11-crossing prime knots and give a minimal bridge projection for each of these knots. The results on the indices may be easily summarized: all of these knots that are not rational knots or Montesinos knots have bridge index three.

Abstract:There are 46,972 prime knots with crossing number 14. Among them 19,536 are alternating and have arc index 16. Among the non-alternating knots, 17, 477, and 3,180 have arc index 10, 11, and 12, respectively. The remaining 23,762 have arc index 13 or 14. There are none with arc index smaller than 10 or larger than 14. We used the Dowker-Thistlethwaite code of the 23,762 knots provided by the program Knotscape to locate non-alternating edges in their diagrams. Our method requires at least six non-alternating edges to find arc presentations with 13 arcs. We obtained 8,027 knots having arc index 13. We show them by their minimal grid diagrams. The remaining 15,735 prime non-alternating 14 crossing knots have arc index 14 as determined by the lower bound obtained from the Kauffman polynomial.

Abstract:In this paper we present a systematic method to generate prime knot and prime link minimal triple-point projections, and then classify all classical prime knots and prime links with triple-crossing number at most four. We also extend the table of known knots and links with triple-crossing number equal to five. By introducing a new type of diagrammatic move, we reduce the number of generating moves on triple-crossing diagrams, and derive a minimal generating set of moves connecting triple-crossing diagrams of the same knot.

Abstract:It is known that the arc index of alternating knots is the minimal crossing number plus two and the arc index of prime nonalternating knots is less than or equal to the minimal crossing number. We study some cases when the arc index is strictly less than the minimal crossing number. We also give minimal grid diagrams of some prime nonalternating knots with 13 crossings and 14 crossings whose arc index is the minimal crossing number minus one.

Abstract:Kakimizu complexes have been found for several classes of links. O.Kakimizu found the Kakimizu complexes of knots with crossing number less than or equal to 10. Hatcher and Thurston found the 0-skeleton of the Kakimizu complex of 2-bridge links. Sakuma later generalized the result for special arborescent links and found the Kakimizu complexes for the same. Jessica Banks gave a complete proof of results announced by Hirasawa and Sakuma, describing explicitly the Kakimizu complexes of non-split, prime special alternating links. The Kakimizu complexes of prime, non-split alternating links have finite number of vertices. In this paper we compute the Kakimizu complexes for all $11$ crossing prime, alternating knots, explicitly describing each of them. For most knots and links we use known algorithms. The rest of the Kakimizu complexes were found by using Murasugi sums and sutured manifold theory developed by Gabai, Scharlemann, Kakimizu and others.

Abstract:We find explicit maximal rank Coxeter quotients for the knot groups of 595,515 out of the 1,701,936 knots through 16 crossings. We thus calculate the bridge numbers and verify Cappell and Shaneson's Meridional Rank Conjecture for these knots. In addition, we provide a computational tool for establishing the conjecture for those knots beyond 16 crossings whose meridional ranks can be detected via finite Coxeter quotients.

Abstract:We give a list of minimal grid diagrams of the 13 crossing prime nonalternating knots which have arc index 13. There are 9,988 prime knots with crossing number 13. Among them 4,878 are alternating and have arc index 15. Among the other nonalternating knots, 49, 399, 1,412 and 3,250 have arc index 10, 11, 12, and 13, respectively. We used the Dowker-Thistlethwaite code of the 3,250 knots provided by the program Knotscape to generate spanning trees of the corresponding knot diagrams to obtain minimal arc presentations in the form of grid diagrams.

Abstract:A knot is a closed loop in space without self-intersection. Two knots are equivalent if there is a self homeomorphism of space bringing one onto the other. An arc presentation is an embedding of a knot in the union of finitely many half planes with a common boundary line such that each half plane contains a simple arc of the knot. The minimal number of such half planes among all arc presentations of a given knot is called the arc index of the knot. A knot is usually presented as a planar diagram with finitely many crossings of two strands where one of the strands goes over the other. A grid diagram is a planar diagram which is a non-simple rectilinear polygon such that vertical edges always cross over horizontal edges at all crossings. It is easily seen that an arc presentation gives rise to a grid diagram and vice versa. It is known that the arc index of an alternating knot is two plus its minimal crossing number. There are 4878 prime alternating knots with minimal crossing number 13. We obtained minimal arc presentations of them in the form of grid diagrams having 15 vertical segments. This is a continuation of the works on prime alternating knots of 11 crossings and 12 crossings.

Abstract:An upper bound of the superbridge index of the connected sum of two knots is given in terms of the braid index of the summands. Using this upper bound and minimal polygonal presentations, we give an upper bound in terms of the superbridge index and the bridge index of the summands when they are torus knots. In contrast to the fact that the difference between the sum of bridge indices of two knots and the bridge index of their connected sum is always one, the corresponding difference for the superbridge index can be arbitrarily large.

Abstract:In this article we study the braid indices of 2-bridge knots with a fixed crossing number $c$. We show that the average braid index of the set of $2$-bridge knots of crossing number $c$ is asymptotically linear, approaching $\frac{c}{3}+\frac{11}{9}$. Additionally, we show that the variance of the braid indices of the set of $2$-bridge knots of crossing number $c$ is also asymptotically linear, approaching $\frac{2c}{27} - \frac{10}{81}$. Finally, we find a formula for the number $k_{c,b}$ of $2$-bridge knots with crossing number $c$ and braid index $b$, and show that for any fixed $c$, the braid index where $k_{c,b}$ achieves its maximum is $b=\left\lceil \frac{c}{3}\right\rceil +1$.

Abstract:An $n$-crossing is a point in the projection of a knot where $n$ strands cross so that each strand bisects the crossing. An übercrossing projection has a single $n$-crossing and a petal projection has a single $n$-crossing such that there are no loops nested within others. The übercrossing number, $\text{ü}(K)$, is the smallest $n$ for which we can represent a knot $K$ with a single $n$-crossing. The petal number is the number of loops in the minimal petal projection. In this paper, we relate the übercrossing number and petal number to well-known invariants such as crossing number, bridge number, and unknotting number. We find that the bounds we have constructed are tight for $(r, r+1)$-torus knots. We also explore the behavior of übercrossing number under composition.

Abstract:We calculate the bridge distance for $m$-bridge knots/links in the $3$-sphere with sufficiently complicated $2m$-plat projections. In particular we show that if the underlying braid of the plat has $n - 1$ rows of twists and all its exponents have absolute value greater than or equal to three then the distance of the bridge sphere is exactly $\lceil n/(2(m - 2)) \rceil$, where $\lceil x \rceil$ is the smallest integer greater than or equal to $x$. As a corollary, we conclude that if such a diagram has more than $4m(m-2)$ rows then the bridge sphere defining the plat projection is the unique minimal bridge sphere for the knot.

We prove an inequality on the braid indices of two-bridge knots if there exists an epimorphism between their knot groups. Moreover, we provide the average braid index of all two-bridge knots with a given crossing number.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>We study methods for computing the bridge number of a knot from a knot diagram. We prove equivalence between a geometric and a combinatorial definition of the bridge number of a knot diagram. For each notion of diagrammatic bridge number considered, we find crossing number minimizing knot diagrams which fail to minimize bridge number. Furthermore, we construct a family of minimal crossing diagrams for which the difference between diagrammatic bridge number and the actual bridge number of the knot grows to infinity.</p>

Abstract:We consider the relationship between the crosscap number γ of knots and a partial order on the set of all prime knots, which is defined as follows. For two knots K and J , we say K≥J if there exists an epimorphism f:π1(S3−K)→π1(S3−J) . We prove that if K and J are 2-bridge knots and K>J , then γ(K)≥3γ(J)−4 . We also classify all pairs (K,J) for which the inequality is sharp. A similar result relating the genera of two knots has been proven by Suzuki and Tran. Namely, if K and J are 2-bridge knots and K>J , then g(K)≥3g(J)−1 , where g(K) denotes the genus of the knot K .

Equivariant crossing numbers for two-bridge knots

Abstract:Symmetries of knots have been studied extensively, and strongly invertible knots are one of them. Lamm defined the equivariant crossing number $c_t(K)$, the minimum crossing number among all symmetric diagrams for a strongly invertible knot $K$. In this paper, we define $c_2(K)$ for two-bridge knots by restricting diagrams to two types. This gives an upper bound for $c_t(K)$. We give an algorithm to determine $c_2(K)$ for any two-bridge knot. The results of calculation by a computer up to 14 crossings are shown. As a corollary, we show 20 examples of knots up to 10 crossings in Rolfsen's knot table whose symmetry can be improved without increasing the number of crossings.

Abstract:We show that the average or expected absolute value of the signatures of all 2-bridge knots with crossing number $c$ approaches $\sqrt{{2c}/{\pi}}$. Baader, Kjuchukova, Lewark, Misev, and Ray consider a model for 2-bridge knot diagrams indexed by diagrammatic crossing number $n$ and show that the average 4-genus is sublinear in $n$. We build upon this result in two ways to obtain an upper bound for the average 4-genus of a 2-bridge knot: our model is indexed by crossing number $c$ and gives a specific sublinear upper bound of $9.75c/\log c$.

Abstract:Let $k\subset S^3$ be a nontrivial knot. The Cabling Conjecture of Francisco González-Acuña and Hamish Short posits that $\pi$-Dehn surgery on $k$ produces a reducible manifold if and only if $k$ is a $(p,q)$-cable knot and the surgery slope $\pi$ equals $pq$. We extend the work of James Allen Hoffman to prove the Cabling Conjecture for knots with bridge number up to $5$.

Abstract:The stick index of a knot is the least number of line segments required to build the knot in space. We define two analogous 2-dimensional invariants, the planar stick index, which is the least number of line segments in the plane to build a projection, and the spherical stick index, which is the least number of great circle arcs to build a projection on the sphere. We find bounds on these quantities in terms of other knot invariants, and give planar stick and spherical stick constructions for torus knots and for compositions of trefoils. In particular, unlike most knot invariants,we show that the spherical stick index distinguishes between the granny and square knots, and that composing a nontrivial knot with a second nontrivial knot need not increase its spherical stick index.
