Abstract:The super Catalan numbers $T(m,n)=(2m)!(2n)!/2m!n!(m+n)!$ are integers which generalize the Catalan numbers. With the exception of a few values of $m$, no combinatorial interpretation in known for $T(m,n)$. We give a weighted interpretation for $T(m,n)$ and develop a technique that converts this weighted interpretation into a conventional combinatorial interpretation in the case $m=2$.

Abstract:Zhao (2003a) first established a congruence for any odd prime p>3, S(1,1,1;p)≡−2Bp−3 (mod p), which holds when p=3 evidently. In this paper, we consider finite triple harmonic sum S(α,β,γ,p) (mod p) is considered for all positive integers α,β,γ. We refer to w=α+β+γ as the weight of the sum, and show that if w is even, S(α,β,γ,p)≡0 (mod p) for p≥w+3; if w is odd S(α,γ,γ,p)≡rBp−w (mod p) for p≥w, here r is an explicit rational number independent of p. A congruence of Catalan number is obtained as a special case.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the combinatorial properties of three classes of integer partitions: (1) $s$-modular partitions, a class consisting of partitions into parts with a number of occurrences (i.e., multiplicity) congruent to $0$ or $1$ modulo $s$, (2) $s$-congruent partitions, which generalize Sellers' partitions into parts not congruent to $2$ modulo $4$, and (3) $s$-duplicate partitions, of which the partitions having distinct odd parts and enumerated by the function $\mypod(n)$ are a special case. In this vein, we generalize Alladi's series expansion for the product generating function of $\mypod(n)$ and show that Andrews' generalization of Göllnitz-Gordon identities coincides with the number of partitions into parts simultaneously $s$-congruent and $t$-distinct (parts appearing fewer than $t$ times).

Abstract:We show that the Schubert polynomial S_w specializes to the Catalan number C_n when $w=1(n+1)...2$. Several proofs of this result as well as a q-analog are given. An application to the singularities of Schubert varieties is given.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and let $a$ be a positive integer. In this paper we investigate $\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom[(h+1)k,k+d]/m^k$ modulo a prime $p$, where $d$ and $m$ are integers with $-h<d<=p^a$ and $m\not=0 (mod p)$. We also study congruences involving higher-order Catalan numbers $C_k^{(h)}=\binom[(h+1)k,k]/(hk+1)$ and $\bar C_k^{(h)}=\binomal[(h+1)k,k]*h/(k+1)$. Our tools include linear recurrences and the theory of cubic residues. Here are some typical results in the paper. (i) If $p^a=1 (mod 6)$ then $$\sum_{k=1}^{p^a-1}\binom[3k,k]/6^k=2^{(p^a-1)/3}-1 (mod p).$$ Also, $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom[3k,k]/7^k=\cases-2&if p^a=\pm2 (mod 7), \\1&otherwise.$$ (ii) We have $$\sum_{k=1}^{p^a-1}\binom[4k,k]/5^k=\cases1 (mod p) if p\not=11 and p^a=1 (mod 5), \1/11 (mod p)&if p^a=2,3 (mod 5), \9/11 (mod p) if p^a=4 (mod 5). $$ Also, $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}C_k^{(3)}/5^k=\cases1 (mod p) if p^a=1,3 (mod 5), \2 (mod p) if p^a=2 (mod 5), \\0 (mod p)& p^a=4 (mod 5).$$

Abstract:In this paper we obtain some sophisticated combinatorial congruencesinvolving binomial coefficients and confirm two conjectures of the author andDavis. They are closely related to our investigation of the periodicity of thesequence ∑_j=0^ll jS(j,m)a^l-j(l=m,m+1,...) modulo a primep, where a and m>0 are integers, and those S(j,m) are Stirling numbersof the second kind. We also give a new extension of Glaisher's congruence byshowing that (p-1)p^[log_p m] is a period of the sequence ∑_j=r(modp-1)l jS(j,m)(l=m,m+1,...) modulo p.

Abstract:We introduce the super Patalan numbers, a generalization of the super Catalan numbers in the sense of Gessel, and prove a number of properties analagous to those of the super Catalan numbers. The super Patalan numbers generalize the super Catalan numbers similarly to how the Patalan numbers generalize the Catalan numbers.

Abstract:By establishing a labeled Dyck path model for the regions of $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*$, his paper explores several enumerative problems related to the number of regions of level $\ell$, denoted as $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})$ and $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)$, which includes: \begin{enumerate} \item[(1)] proving a Stirling convolution relation between $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})$ and $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)$, refining a result by Stanley and Postnikov; \item[(2)] showing that the sequences $\left(r_\ell{(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})}\right)_{n\geq 0}$ and $(r_\ell {(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)})_{n\geq 0}$ exhibit properties of binomial type in the sense of Rota; \item[(3)] establishing the transformational significance of $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})$ and $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)$ under Stanley's ESA framework: they can be viewed as transition matrices from binomial coefficients to their characteristic polynomials respectively. \end{enumerate} Further, we present two applications of the theories and methods: first, inspired by a question from Deshpande, Menon, and Sarkar, we provide a hyperplane arrangement counting interpretation of the two-parameter generalization of Fuss--Catalan numbers, which is closely related to the number of regions of level $\ell$ in the $m$-Catalan arrangement. Second, using labeled Dyck paths to depict the number of regions in the $m$-Catalan arrangement, we algorithmically provide the inverse mapping of the Fu, Wang, and Zhu mapping.

Abstract:We study two classes of permutations intimately related to the visual proof of Spitzer's lemma and Huq's generalization of the Chung-Feller theorem. Both classes of permutations are counted by the Fuss-Catalan numbers. The study of one class leads to a generalization of results of Flajolet from continued fractions to continuants. The study of the other class leads to the discovery of a restricted variant of the Foata--Strehl group action.

Abstract:For each $s\in \{2,4\}$, the generating function of $R_s(n)$, the number of partitions of n into odd parts or congruent to 0, $\pm \, s\pmod {10}$, arises naturally in regime III of Rodney Baxter's solution of the hard-hexagon model of statistical mechanics. For each $s\in \{1,3\}$, the generating function of $R^*_s(n)$, the number of partitions of n into parts not congruent to 0, $\pm \, s\pmod {10}$ and $10-2s \pmod {20}$, arises naturally in regime IV of Rodney Baxter's solution of the hard-hexagon model of statistical mechanics. In this paper, we investigate the parity of $R_s(n)$ and $R^*_s(n)$, providing new parity results involving sums of partition numbers p(n) and squares in arithmetic progressions.
Catalan numbers: from FC elements to classical diagram algebras

Abstract:Let $W^c(A_n)$ be the set of fully commutative elements in the $A_n$-type Coxeter group. Using only the settings of their canonical form, we recount $W^c(A_n)$ by the recurrence that is taken as a definition of the Catalan number $C_{n+1}$ and we find the Narayana numbers as well as the Catalan triangle via suitable set partitions of $W^c(A_n)$. We determine the unique bijection between $W^c(A_n)$ and the set of non-crossing diagrams of $n+1$ strings that respects the diagrammatic multiplication by concatenation in the $A_n$-type Temperley-Lieb algebra, along with the two algorithms implementing this bijection and its inverse.

Supercongruences arising from Ramanujan-Sato Series

Abstract:Recently, the authors with Lea Beneish established a recipe for constructing Ramanujan-Sato series for $1/\pi$, and used this to construct 11 explicit examples of Ramanujan-Sato series arising from modular forms for arithmetic triangle groups of non-compact type. Here, we use work of Chisholm, Deines, Long, Nebe and the third author to prove a general $p$-adic supercongruence theorem through an explicit connection to CM hypergeometric elliptic curves that provides $p$-adic analogues of these Ramanujan-Sato series. We further use this theorem to construct explicit examples related to each of our explicit Ramanujan-Sato series examples.

Abstract:For non-negative integers $n$, $m$, $a$ and $b$, we write $\left( n,m \right) \rightarrow \left( a,b \right)$ if for every family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ with $|\mathcal{F}|\geqslant m$ there is an $a$-element set $T\subseteq [n]$ such that $\left| \mathcal{F}_{\mid T} \right| \geqslant b$, where $\mathcal{F}_{\mid T}=\{ F \cap T : F \in \mathcal{F} \}$. A longstanding problem in extremal set theory asks to determine $m(s)=\lim_{n\rightarrow +\infty}\frac{m(n,s)}{n}$, where $m(n,s)$ denotes the maximum integer $m$ such that $\left( n,m \right) \rightarrow \left( n-1,m-s \right)$ holds for non-negatives $n$ and $s$. In this paper, we establish the exact value of $m(2^{d-1}-c)$ for all $1\leqslant c\leqslant d$ whenever $d\geqslant 50$, thereby solving an open problem posed by Piga and Schülke. To be precise, we show that $$m(n,2^{d-1}-c)=\frac{2^{d}-c}{d}n \mbox{ for } 1\leq c\leq d-1 \mbox{ and } d\mid n, \mbox{ and } m(n,2^{d-1}-d)=\frac{2^{d}-d-0.5}{d}n \mbox{ for } 2d\mid n $$ holds for $d\geq 50$. Furthermore, we provide a proof that confirms a conjecture of Frankl and Watanabe from 1994, demonstrating that $m(11)=5.3$.

On Universal Sums of Polygonal Numbers

Abstract:For m = 3, 4, …, the polygonal numbers of order m are given by p m (n) = (m − 2)( 2 n ) + n (n = 0, 1, 2, …). For positive integers a, b, c and i, j, k ⩾ 3 with max{i, j, k} ⩾ 5, we call the triple (ap i , bp j , cp k ) universal if for any n = 0, 1, 2, …, there are nonnegative integers x, y, z such that n = ap i (x) + bp j (y) + cp k (z). We show that there are only 95 candidates for universal triples (two of which are (p 4, p 5, p 6) and (p 3, p 4, p 27)), and conjecture that they are indeed universal triples. For many triples (ap i , bp j , cp k ) (including (p 3, 4p 4, p 5), (p 4, p 5, p 6) and (p 4, p 4, p 5)), we prove that any nonnegative integer can be written in the form ap i (x) + bp j (y) + cp k (z) with x, y, z ∈ ℤ. We also show some related new results on ternary quadratic forms, one of which states that any nonnegative integer n ≡ 1 (mod 6) can be written in the form x 2 + 3y 2 + 24z 2 with x, y, z ∈ ℤ. In addition, we pose several related conjectures one of which states that for any m = 3, 4, … each natural number can be expressed as p m+1(x 1) + p m+2(x 2) + p m+3(x 3) + r with x 1, x 2, x 3 ∈ {0, 1, 2, …} and r ∈ {0, …, m − 3}.
