Abstract:Driving on an analogy with the technique of composite pulses in quantum physics, we propose a broadband Faraday rotator and thus a broadband optical isolator, which is composed of sequences of ordinary Faraday rotators and achromatic quarter-wave plates rotated at the predetermined angles.

Abstract:We describe a broadband optical device that is capable of rotating the polarization plane of a linearly polarized light at any desired angle over a wide range of wavelengths. The device is composed of a sequence of half-wave plates rotated at specific angles with respect to their fast-polarization axes. This design draws on an analogy with composite pulses, which is a well-known control technique from quantum physics. We derive the solutions for the rotation angles of the single half-wave plates depending on the desired polarization rotation angle. We show that the broadband polarization rotator is robust against variations of the parameters of both the crystal and the light field.

Abstract:A simple scheme for a broadband polarization rotator with tunable rotation angle is proposed and verified experimentally. The rotator consists of only three wave-plates, one of which is a full-wave plate. The robust approach inspired by the composite pulses analogy allows to compensate the wave-plate dispersion in large extent.

Abstract:Faraday isolators are usually limited to Faraday materials with strong Verdet constants. We present a method to reach the 45° polarization rotation angle needed for optical isolators with materials exhibiting a weak Faraday effect. The Faraday effect is enhanced by passing the incident radiation multiple times through the Faraday medium while the rotation angle accumulates after each pass. Materials having excellent thermos-optical properties in the ultraviolet and mid-infrared range become available for optical isolators. Herriott-type multipass cells offer a simple and compact way to realize the desired propagation length in usual optical materials of standard sizes. A proof-of-principle experiment was carried out, demonstrating polarization rotation of a 532 nm laser beam by an angle of 45° in anti-reflection-coated fused silica surrounded by a standard neodymium ring magnet.

Abstract:We provide a technique for a broadband nonreciprocal wave retarder whose quarter-wave plate phase retardation is the same in forward and backward directions. The system is built using a number of sequential nonreciprocal wave plates. The proposed device can also be utilized to create a broadband optical diode, which consists of two achromatic quarter-wave plates, one reciprocal and the other non-reciprocal, that are sandwiched between two polarizers aligned in parallel.

Abstract:Many optical instruments with dielectric singularities cannot be manufactured directly. Their singularities can be transmuted through optical transformation, and equivalent physical media can be built to perform the same optical behaviors. The transformed physical media are usually anisotropic and inhomogeneous and, therefore, difficult to fabricate. In this work, several mathematical approaches are proposed to produce a transformed lens with all the elements of the material tensors to be no less than unity. This increases the ease of implementation, as natural materials may be used, which substantially widens the bandwidth of the transformed devices. Although we focus on an omnidirectional retroreflection lens as an example, the approaches developed here are universal and applicable to a wide class of devices with dielectric singularities. Abstract:A wavelength selective optical isolator is proposed. Being different from conventional isolators, a well-designed wave plate is employed and works together with the Faraday rotator. Different wavelengths thus experiences different phase retardation so that wavelength-dependant polarization states are obtained for bidirectional beams. A (1.49 μm, 1.31 μm) wavelength selective isolator is demonstrated, which means 1.49 μm light only may propagate along one-direction why the opposite wave is only for 1.31 μm light. Over 60 dB optical isolation is obtained, which has promising applications in access optical networks.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel type of polarization rotator which is capable of rotating the polarization plane of a linearly polarized light at any desired angle in either broad or narrow spectral bandwidth. The rotator comprises an array of standard half-wave plates rotated at specific angles with respect to their fast-polarization axes. The performance of the rotator depends on the number of individual half-wave plates and in this paper we experimentally investigate the performance of two composite rotators comprising six and ten half-wave plates.

Abstract:Achieving a broadband nonreciprocal device without gain and any external biasis very challenging and highly desirable for modern photonic technologies andquantum networks. Here, we theoretically propose a passive and bias-freeall-optical isolator for a femtosecond laser pulse by exploiting a newmechanism of unidirectional self-induced transparency, obtained with anonlinear medium followed by a normal absorbing medium at one side. Thetransmission contrast between the forward and backward directions can reach 14.3 dB for a 2π5 fs laser pulse, implying isolation of a signal with anultrabroad bandwidth of 200 THz. The 20 dB bandwidth is about 57 nm, alreadycomparable with a magneto-optical isolator. This cavity-free optical isolatormay pave the way to integrated nonmagnetic isolation of ultrashort laserpulses.

Abstract:One of the most prominent classes of non-reciprocal devices relies upon the effect of non-reciprocal polarization conversion, such as those observed in Faraday isolators. This effect is usually achieved with the use of magneto-optical materials. Here, we introduce a waveguide type optical isolator based on non-reciprocal polarization conversion, without the use of magneto-optical materials. Our isolator is based on spatial-temporal dynamic refractive index modulation, which is more readily amenable for on-chip integration. We numerically demonstrate our design with both first-principle multi-frequency electromagnetic simulations and the vectorial coupled mode theory formalism.

The device is composed of an even number of half-wave plates rotated at specific angles with respect to their fast-polarization axes. The frequency bandwidth of the polarization rotator in principal increases with the number of half-wave plates. Here we experimentally examine the performance of rotators composed of two, four, six, eight and ten half-wave plates.

Abstract:Integrated photonics could bring transformative breakthroughs in computing, networking, imaging, sensing, and quantum information processing, enabled by increasingly sophisticated optical functionalities on a photonic chip. However, wideband optical isolators, which are essential for the robust operation of practically all optical systems, have been challenging to realize in integrated form due to the incompatibility of magnetic media with these circuit technologies. Here, we present the first-ever demonstration of an integrated non-magnetic optical isolator with terahertz-level optical bandwidth. The system is comprised of two acousto-optic frequency-shifting beam splitters which create a non-reciprocal multimode interferometer exhibiting high-contrast, nonreciprocal light transmission. We dramatically enhance the isolation bandwidth of this system by precisely dispersion balancing the paths of the interferometer. Using this approach, we demonstrate integrated nonmagnetic isolators with an optical contrast as high as 28 dB, insertion losses as low as -2.16 dB, and optical bandwidths as high as 2 THz (16 nm). We also show that the center frequency and direction of optical isolation are rapidly reconfigurable by tuning the relative phase of the microwave signals used to drive the acousto-optic beam splitters. With their CMOS compatibility, wideband operation, low losses, and rapid reconfigurability, such integrated isolators could address a key barrier to the integration of a wide range of photonic functionalities on a chip. Looking beyond the current demonstration, this bandwidth-scalable approach to nonmagnetic isolation opens the door to ultrawideband (>10 THz) isolators, which are needed to shrink state-of-the-art imaging, sensing, and communications systems into photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:A polarization rotator based on loaded parallel strip-lines is theoretically and experimentally investigated. The unit cells are short-stub loaded parallel strip-lines. The arrays on the front and back layers are rotated by 90° to each other. By loading the stubs, good coupling between the two layers is obtained. Such a structural rotation along with the loading stubs allow the $y$ -polarized wave to be converted to $x$ -polarized wave through field coupling. A broad transmission bandwidth of 30% (86-116 GHz) by using the proposed structure has been reached. In addition, the PTFE substrate is only 0.25 mm thick, which is less than $0.1lambda $ at 86 GHz. Such a thickness allows the polarization rotator to be easily mounted on antenna radomes. The fabricated prototype demonstrates good agreement between simulation and measurement results.

Abstract:In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a broadband polarization splitter-rotator (PSR) on the lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). With multiple sequentially connected adiabatic tapers for waveguide mode conversion and directional coupling, the PSR shows a 160-nm bandwidth covering the C and L bands, an insertion loss of less than 2 dB, and an extinction ratio of more than 11 dB. Benefiting from the conversion-enhanced adiabatic tapers, the broadband device has a short length of 405 µm. Further optimization is performed to reduce the device length to 271 µm and comparable performances are achieved, demonstrating the feasibility of higher device compactness. The proposed design and principle can contribute to high-performance polarization management for integrated lithium niobate photonics.

Abstract:In this paper, a broadband polarization converter is proposed. It consists of inclined split ring resonators printed on the top layer of a double-sided copper circuit board and a dielectric substrate. Our converter is able to change an incidence of linear polarization to its orthogonal orientation, in the frequency range of 8.8 - 22.14 GHz, while maintaining a polarization conversion ratio of more than 90% and the bandwidth of more than 86%.

Abstract:We experimentally and theoretically demonstrate an ultrathin, broadband, and highly efficient metamaterial-based polarization converter with a metasurface/insulator/metal (MIM) configuration. In such a system, the resonance undergoes a transition from a vertical Fabry–Pérot type to a transverse type as the spacer thickness decreases. By changing the spacer thickness from 1 to 15 mm, the working waveband of this device could be tuned from 10.9–12.9 to 6–8 GHz without compromising the polarization conversion efficiency. Equivalent circuit theory and the transfer matrix method are used for demonstrating the physical mechanism of our device.

Abstract:Superconducting traveling-wave parametric amplifiers have emerged as highly promising devices for near-quantum-limited broadband amplification of microwave signals and are essential for high quantum-efficiency microwave readout lines. Built-in isolation, as well as gain, would address their primary limitation: lack of true directionality due to potential backward travel of electromagnetic radiation to their input port. Here, we demonstrate a Josephson-junction-based traveling-wave parametric amplifier isolator. It utilizes third-order nonlinearity for amplification and second-order nonlinearity for frequency upconversion of backward propagating modes to provide reverse isolation. These parametric processes, enhanced by a novel phase matching mechanism, exhibit gain of up to 20~dB and reverse isolation of up to 30~dB over a static 3~dB bandwidth greater than 500~MHz, while keeping near-quantum limited added noise. This demonstration of a broadband truly directional amplifier ultimately paves the way towards broadband quantum-limited microwave amplification lines without bulky magnetic isolators and with inhibited back-action.

Abstract:Optical isolators are an essential component of photonic systems. Current integrated optical isolators have limited bandwidths due to stringent phase-matching conditions, resonant structures, or material absorption. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-broadband integrated optical isolator in thin-film lithium niobate photonics. We use dynamic standing-wave modulation in a tandem configuration to break Lorentz reciprocity and achieve isolation. We measure an isolation ratio of 15 dB and insertion loss below 0.5 dB for a design wavelength of 1550 nm. In addition, we experimentally show that this isolator can simultaneously operate at visible and telecom wavelengths with comparable performance. Isolation bandwidths ~100 nm can be achieved simultaneously at both visible and telecom wavelengths. Our device's large bandwidth, high flexibility, and real-time tunability can enable novel non-reciprocal functionality on integrated photonic platforms.
