Abstract:We studied the low-lying electronic structure of the newly discovered iron-platinum-arsenide superconductor, Ca${}_{10}$(Pt${}_{4}$As${}_{8}$)(Fe${}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}$Pt${}_{x}$As${}_{2}$)${}_{5}$ (${T}_{c}=22$ K) with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found that the Pt${}_{4}$As${}_{8}$ layer contributes to a small electronlike Fermi surface, indicative of metallic charge reservoir layers that are rare for iron based superconductors. Moreover, the electronic structure of the FeAs layers resembles those of other prototype iron pnictides to a large extent. However, there is only ${d}_{xy}$-orbital originated holelike Fermi surface near the zone center, which is rather strange for an iron pnictide superconductor with relatively high superconducting transition temperature; and the ${d}_{xz}$ and ${d}_{yz}$ originated bands are not degenerate at the zone center. Furthermore, all bands near the Fermi energy show negligible ${k}_{z}$ dependence, indicating the strong two-dimensional nature of this material. Our results indicate this material possesses a rather interesting electronic structure, which enriches our current knowledge of iron based superconductors.
Structural stability and electronic properties of the new superconductor (Ca4Al2O6 - X)(Fe2As2) from first-principles study

Abstract:Density-functional theory calculations are performed on (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) to address the structural stability and electronic properties. The total-energy calculations show that the ground state of the parent compound (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) has striped anti-ferromagnetic order with anti-ferromagnetic coupling between Fe layers. The oxygen vacancy formation energy at the 4f site (similar to 6.02 eV) is smaller than that at the 2c site (similar to 6.33 eV) for the (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) (x = 1) phase, which means oxygen vacancies can be easily formed at the 4f site. Further studies show that the ground state of (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) (x = 0.25) is identical to the case of (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2), which implies that the spin density wave (SDW) may coexist with superconductivity in the (Ca4Al2O5.75)(Fe2As2) phase. The densities of states (DOSs) of (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) (x = 0, 0.25) show that both spin-up and spin-down DOSs at the Fermi energy level become larger obviously due to oxygen vacancies being introduced, which means introducing oxygen vacancies in (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) is beneficial for improving its conductivity. These results will be helpful for synthesizing new 42 622-type structured iron-based superconductors with oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:In this paper the density-functional theory calculations are performed on the newly discovered superconductor (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2). Within the LSDA approach, the total-energy calculations show that the ground state is in striped anti-ferromagnetic (S-AFM) order for (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) (x=0 and 0.5) and oxygen vacancy is easily formed at 8g site for (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) (x=0.5). The electronic densities of the states around the Fermi energy (EF) mainly come from the Fe-3d states for both nonmagnetic and S-AFM configurations of (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) (x=0) and the total DOSs (both spins) around the EF become obviously larger when oxygen vacancies are introduced at 8g site. Considering electron correlation, it is found that a strong correlation insulating gap develops with the increase of Hubbard U for the parent compound (Ca3Al2O5)(Fe2As2), and the transition from insulator to metal is forecasted when oxygen vacancies are introduced in (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) system. The ground state of this compound could be ascribed as a correlated insulator and the oxygen vacancy yields its transition from insulator to metal.

Abstract:We report the discovery of a new noncentrosymmetric superconductor CaPtAs. It crystallizes in a tetragonal structure (space group I41md, No. 109), featuring three dimensional honeycomb networks of Pt-As and a much elongated c-axis (a = b = 4.18 Å, and c = 43.70 Å). The superconductivity of CaPtAs with Tc = 1.47 K was characterized by means of electrical resistivity, specific heat, and ac magnetic susceptibility. The electronic specific heat Ce(T)/T shows evidence for a deviation from the behavior of a conventional BCS superconductor, and can be reasonably fitted by a p-wave model. The upper critical field μ0Hc2 of CaPtAs exhibits a moderate anisotropy, with an in-plane value of around 204 mT and an out-of-plane value of 148 mT. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Pt-5d and As-4p orbitals mainly contribute to the density of states near the Fermi level, showing that the Pt-As honeycomb networks may significantly influence the superconducting properties.

Abstract:Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 is the parent compound for a class of Fe-based high-temperature superconductors where superconductivity with transition temperatures up to 30 K can be introduced by partial element substitution. We present a combined high-resolution high-energy x-ray diffraction and elastic neutron scattering study on a Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 single crystal. This study reveals the microscopic nature of two distinct and continuous phase transitions to be very similar to other Fe-based high-temperature superconductors: an orthorhombic distortion of the high-temperature tetragonal Fe-As lattice below T_S = 110(2) K followed by stripe-like antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe moments below T_N = 96(2) K. These findings demonstrate that major features of the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors are very robust against variations in chemical constitution as well as structural imperfection of the layers separating the Fe-As layers from each other and confirms that the Fe-As layers primarily determine the physics in this class of material.

Abstract:Sizable single-crystalline samples of Ca-10(Pt3As8)((Fe1-xPtx)(2)As-2)(5) (the 10-3-8 phase) with 0 <= x < 0.1 have been grown and have been systematically characterized via x-ray diffraction, magnetic, and transport measurements. The unsubstituted sample is a heavily doped semiconductor with no sign of magnetic order down to 2 K. With increasing Pt content, the metallic behavior appears, and superconductivity is realized for x >= 0.023. T-c rises to its maximum of approximately 13.6 K at the doping level of x similar to 0.06 and then decreases for higher x values. The electronic phase diagram of the 10-3-8 phase was mapped out based on the magnetic and transport measurements. The mass anisotropy parameter Gamma similar to 10, obtained from resistive measurements in magnetic fields, indicates a relatively large anisotropy in the iron-based superconductor family. This strong two-dimensional character may lead to the absence of magnetic order. A linear T dependence of susceptibility at high temperatures is observed, indicating that spin fluctuations exist in the underdoped region as in most of the Fe-pnictide superconductors.

Abstract:We report superconducting properties of single crystalline Ca10(Pt4-{\delta}As8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 by X-ray diffraction, magnetization, resistivity, and magneto-optical imaging measurements. The magnetization measurements reveal fish-tail hysteresis loop and relatively high critical current density Jc ~ 0.8\times105 A/cm2 at low temperatures. The exponential temperature dependence of Jc, which arises from nonlinear effective flux-creep activation energy, has been observed. Upper critical field determined by resistive transition shows a relatively large anisotropy. The magneto-optical images reveal homogenous current flow within the crystal.

Abstract:The electronic structure of CaFe2As2, a parent compound of iron-based superconductors, is studied with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The electronic structure of CaFe2As2 in the paramagnetic state is consistent with that of density-functional theory calculations. We show that the electronic structure of this compound is significantly reconstructed when entering the spin density wave state. We could resolve two hole-like pockets and four electron-like pockets around the (0, 0) point, and one electron-like pocket surrounded with a pair of electron- and hole-like pockets around the (π, π) point in the spin density wave state. Therefore, the complicated Fermi surface topology and electronic structure near Fermi surface of CaFe2As2 illustrate that there exists unconventional electronic reconstruction in the spin density wave state, which cannot be explained by the band folding and Fermi surface nesting pictures.

Abstract:The electronic structure of the Fe-based superconductor Ba(0.6)K(0.4)Fe(2)As(2) is studied by means of angle-resolved photoemission. We identify dispersive bands crossing the Fermi level forming hole-like (electron-like) Fermi surfaces (FSs) around Γ (M) with nearly nested FS pockets connected by the antiferromagnetic wavevector. Compared to band structure calculation findings, the overall bandwidth is reduced by a factor of 2 and the low energy dispersions display even stronger mass renormalization. Using an effective tight banding model, we fitted the band structure and the FSs to obtain band parameters reliable for theoretical modeling and calculation of physical quantities.

Abstract:We report the electronic structure reconstruction of Ca1-xPrxFe2As2 in the low temperature collapsed tetragonal (CT) phase observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Different from Ca(Fe1-xRhx)(2)As-2 and the annealed CaFe2As2 where all hole Fermi surfaces are absent in their CT phases, the cylindrical hole Fermi surface still persists in the CT phase of Ca1-xPrxFe2As2. Furthermore, we found at least three well separated electronlike bands around the zone corner in the CT phase of Ca1-xPrxFe2As2, which are more dispersive than the electronlike bands in the high temperature tetragonal phase. Based on these observations, we propose that the weakening of correlations (as indicated by the reduced effective mass), rather than the lack of Fermi surface nesting, might be responsible for the absence of magnetic ordering and superconductivity in the CT phase.
Superconductivity induced by doping Platinum in BaFe2As2

Abstract:By substituting Fe with the 5d-transition metal Pt in BaFe2As2, we have successfully synthesized the superconductors BaFe2-xPtxAs2. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants indicates that the Fe ions were successfully replaced by Pt ions. By increasing the doping content of Pt, the antiferromagnetic order and structural transition of the parent phase is suppressed and superconductivity emerges at a doping level of about x = 0.02. At a doping level of x = 0.1, we get a maximum transition temperature Tc of about 25 K. The synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction shows that the resistivity anomaly is in good agreement with the structural transition. The superconducting transitions at different magnetic fields were also measured at the doping level of about x = 0.1, yielding a slope of -dHc2/dT = 5.4 T/K near Tc. A phase diagram was established for the Pt doped 122 system. Our results suggest that superconductivity can also be easily induced in the FeAs family by substituting the Fe with Pt, with almost the similar maximum transition temperatures as doping Ni, Co, Rh and Ir.

Superconductivity induced by doping Pd in SrFe2-xPdxAs2

Abstract:By using solid state reaction method, we have synthesized the Pd-doped superconductor SrFe2-xPdxAs2. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants indicated that the Fe ions were successfully replaced by the Pd. By increasing the doping content of Pd, the antiferromagnetic state of the parent phase is suppressed and superconductivity is induced at a doping level of about x=0.05. Superconductivity with a maximum transition temperature Tc of about 8.7 K was achieved at the doping level of x = 0.15. The general phase diagram of Tc versus x was obtained and found to be similar to the case of Ni and Co doping to the Fe sites. Our results suggest that superconductivity can be easily induced in the FeAs family by adding electrons into the system, regardless with the transition metals of 3d or higher d-orbital electrons.

Abstract:We report the structural, magnetic, and electronic transport properties of SrFe${}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}$Cu${}_{x}$As${}_{2}$ single crystals grown by a self-flux technique. Both SrCu${}_{2}$As${}_{2}$ and SrFe${}_{2}$As${}_{2}$ crystallize in a ThCr${}_{2}$Si${}_{2}$-type (122-type) structure at room temperature, but exhibit distinct magnetic and electronic transport properties. According to the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy Cu $2p$ core line position, resistivity, susceptibility, and positive Hall coefficient, SrCu${}_{2}$As${}_{2}$ is an $\mathit{sp}$-band metal with Cu in the 3d${}^{10}$ electronic configuration corresponding to the valence state Cu${}^{1+}$. Compared with SrCu${}_{2}$As${}_{2}$, the almost unchanged Cu $2p$ core line position in SrFe${}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}$Cu${}_{x}$As${}_{2}$ indicates that partial Cu substitutions for Fe in SrFe${}_{2}$As${}_{2}$ may result in hole doping rather than the expected electron doping. No superconductivity is induced by Cu substitution on Fe sites, even though the structural/spin density wave transition is gradually suppressed with increasing Cu doping.

Abstract:The observation of non-bulk superconductivity with an unexpectedly high onset transition temperature Tc up to ~ 49 K in non-superconducting single crystalline CaFe2As2 upon rare-earth doping has raised interesting questions concerning its origin. Several possibilities including interfacial mechanism have been proposed to account for the unusual observation. In an attempt to differentiate such propositions, we have carried out a systematic compositional and magnetic study on single crystals of nominal (Ca1-xPrx)Fe2As2 with 0 <= x <= 0.13 throughout the solubility range of Pr, which covers both the non-superconducting and superconducting regions. We found the unusual simultaneous occurrence of superparamagnetism and superconductivity with an x-independent Tc and a close correlation of the superconducting volume fraction with the magnetic cluster density and As-defect density. The finding demonstrates a close relationship among superconductivity, superparamagnetism, and defects, consistent with the previously proposed interface-mechanism, and offers a possible future path to higher Tc.

Abstract:We study antimony doping effects in the iron-based superconductor CaFe(Sb$_{x}$As$_{1-x}$)$_{2}$ by using the first-principle calculation. The calculations reveal that the substitution of the doped antimony atom into As of the chainlike As layers is more stable than that in FeAs layers. This prediction can be checked by experiments. Our results suggest that doping homologous elements into the chainlike As layers existing only in novel 112 system is responsible for rising up the critical temperature. We discuss antimony doping effects on the electronic structure. It is found that the calculated band structures with and without the antimony doping are similar to each other within our framework.

Abstract:We have synthesized single crystals of iron-based superconducting Ca10(Pt₄As₈)((Fe0.86Pt0.14)₂As₂)₅ and performed extensive measurements on their transport properties. A remarkable difference in the behavior and a large anisotropy between in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity was observed. Disorder could explain the in-plane square-root temperature dependence resistivity, and interlayer incoherent scattering may contribute to the out-of-plane transport property. Along the ab plane, the estimated value of the coherence length is 15.5 Å. From measurements of the upper critical magnetic field Hc2 (T ≥ 20 K), we estimate Hc2(0) = 313 T. Thermal conductivity for Ca10(Pt₄As₈)((Fe0.86Pt0.14)₂As₂)₅ is relatively small, which can be accounted for by the disorder in the crystal and the low-charge carrier density as verified by the Hall effect.
Superconductivity in Ca1-xLaxFeAs2: A Novel 112-Type Iron Pnictide with Arsenic Zigzag Bonds

Abstract:We report superconductivity in the novel 112-type iron-based compound Ca1-xLaxFeAs2. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the compound crystallizes in a monoclinic structure (space group P21), in which Fe2As2 layers alternate with Ca2As2 spacer layers such that monovalent arsenic forms zigzag chains. Superconductivity with a transition temperature (Tc) of 34 K was observed for the x = 0.1 sample, while the x = 0.21 sample exhibited trace superconductivity at 45 K. First-principles band calculations demonstrated the presence of almost cylindrical Fermi surfaces, favorable for the high Tc in La-doped CaFeAs2.
