Abstract:Finding out if neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles is known to be extremely difficult. This is generally believed to be due to the smallness of the neutrino mass compared to typical neutrino energies, and to the fact that in the limit of vanishing mass all distinctions between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos disappear. This, however, does not necessarily mean that for non-relativistic neutrinos distinguishing between them is an easy task. We consider this problem in detail. The issues discussed include the possibilities of studying neutrino nature with non-relativistic neutrinos produced in $\beta$ decay in direct neutrino mass measurement experiments and with relic neutrinos, as well as with slow neutrinos in pair production processes and in scattering, both elastic and inelastic. We also discuss processes allowed for only one of the two neutrino types as a means of uncovering neutrino nature.

Abstract:A novel method to differentiate the effects of Dirac and Majorana (D-M) neutrinos in four-body decays has been discussed in [C. S. Kim et al. , Inferring the nature of active neutrinos: Dirac or Majorana?, Phys. Rev. D 105 , 113006 (2022).]. There, it is concluded that the back-to-back kinematic scenario seems to avoid the constraint imposed by the "practical Dirac-Majorana confusion theorem," as one does not need to fully integrate over neutrino and antineutrino momenta. In this paper, we propose to analyze radiative leptonic lepton-decays ( l→l′νν ̄γ ), as an independent alternative process to study the possible Majorana nature of neutrinos. Our approach demonstrates that, in the back-to-back kinematic configuration (for the l′−γ and ν−ν ̄ systems, respectively), the distinction between Dirac and Majorana cases disappears when the inaccessible neutrino angle is integrated out, which might appear unexpected considering the claims in [C. S. Kim et al. , Inferring the nature of active neutrinos: Dirac or Majorana?, Phys. Rev. D 105 , 113006 (2022).]. The Inverse Seesaw Family: Dirac And Majorana

Abstract:After developing a general criterion for deciding which neutrino mass models belong to the category of inverse seesaw models, we apply it to obtain the Dirac analogue of the canonical Majorana inverse seesaw model. We then generalize the inverse seesaw model and obtain a class of inverse seesaw mechanisms both for Majorana and Dirac neutrinos. We further show that many of the models have double or multiple suppressions coming from tiny symmetry breaking "$\mu$-terms". These models can be tested both in colliders and with the observation of lepton flavour violating processes.

Abstract:The intent of this paper is to convey a new primary physical idea of a Dirac-Majorana neutrino duality in relation to the topical problem of neutrino oscillations. In view of the new atmospheric, solar and the LSND neutrino oscillation data, the Pontecorvo $\nu - K^0$ oscillation analogy is generalized to the notion of neutrino duality with substantially different physical meaning ascribed to the long-baseline and the short-baseline neutrino oscillations. At the level of CP-invariance, the suggestion of dual neutrino properties defines the symmetric two-mixing-angle form of the widely discussed four-neutrino $(2+2)$-mixing scheme, as a result of the lepton charge conservation selection rule and a minimum of two Dirac neutrino fields. With neutrino duality, the two-doublet structure of the Majorana neutrino mass spectrum is a vestige of the two-Dirac-neutrino origin. The fine neutrino mass doublet structure is natural because it is produced by a lepton charge symmetry violating perturbation on a zero-approximation system of two twofold mass-degenerate Dirac neutrino-antineutrino pairs. A set of inferences related to the neutrino oscillation phenomenology in vacuum is considered.

Abstract:The absolute mass of neutrinos and their nature are presently unknown. Aggregate matter has a coherent weak charge leading to a repulsive interaction mediated by a neutrino pair. Near its range at micron distances the virtual neutrinos are non-relativistic, giving a distinct behavior for Dirac versus Majorana mass terms. The magnitude and the distance dependence of the effective potential disentangle these fundamental properties of neutrinos. We propose an experiment to search for this potential based on the concept that the density dependent interaction of an atomic probe with a material source in one arm of an atomic clock interferometer generates a differential phase. The appropriate geometry of the device is selected using the saturation of the weak potential as a guide. The proposed experiment has the added benefit of being sensitive to gravity at micron distances. A strategy to suppress the competing Casimir-Polder interaction, depending on the electronic structure of the material source, as well as a way to compensate the gravitational interaction in the two arms of the interferometer is discussed.

Abstract:A significant part of the present work is devoted to proving that the basic elements of the particle oscillation concept either do not correspond to the principles of classical logic, or violate the energy-momentum conservation law, or contradict the quantum mechanical basis of coherence, or represent a primitive falsehood. Our analysis concerns successively all stages of the formation of the concept from its conceiving to the assertion about the conversion of the solar electron neutrino into a muon one. When discussing a new fundamental interaction, we note the decisive role in the outcome of the processes of changing the handedness of a neutrino (antineutrino) at each act of its interaction with a real or virtual massless pseudoscalar boson, due to which, at the exit from the Sun, the fluxes of left- and right-handed electron neutrinos become approximately equal. Thanks to the new interaction, beta decays of nuclei have a mode with the emission of a massless pseudoscalar boson, at which the antineutrino changes its handedness and becomes unobservable, what is the essence of the reactor antineutrino anomaly.

Abstract:Neutrinos may acquire small Dirac or Majorana masses by new low-energy physics in terms of the chiral gravitational anomaly, as proposed by Dvali and Funcke (2016). This model predicts fast neutrino decays, $\nu_i\to\nu_j+\phi$ and $\nu_i\to\bar{\nu}_j+\phi$, where the gravi-majorons $\phi$ are pseudoscalar Nambu-Goldstone bosons. The final-state neutrino and antineutrino distributions differ depending on the Dirac or Majorana mass of the initial state. This opens a channel for distinguishing these cases, for example in the spectrum of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. In particular, we put bounds on the neutrino lifetimes in the Majorana case, ${\tau_2}/{m_2}> 1.1\times 10^{-3}(6.7\times 10^{-4})~{\rm s/eV}$ and ${\tau_3}/{m_3}> 2.2\times 10^{-5}(1.3\times 10^{-4})~{\rm s/eV}$ at 90% CL for hierarchical (degenerate) masses, using data from experiments searching for antineutrino appearance from the Sun.

Distinguishing Dirac vs. Majorana Neutrinos: a Cosmological Probe

Abstract:Cosmic background neutrinos ($C_{\nu}B)$ helicity composition is different for Dirac or Majorana neutrinos making detectors based on $C_{\nu}B$ capture sensitive to the nature of neutrinos. We calculate, for the first time, the helicity changes of neutrinos crossing dark matter fields, to quantitatively calculate this effect on the capture rate. We show that a fraction of neutrinos change their helicity, regardless of them being deflected by a void or a dark matter halo. The average signal from the 100 most massive voids or halos in a Gpc$^3$ gives a prediction that if neutrinos are Dirac, the density of the $C_{\nu} B$ background measured on Earth should be 48 cm${^{-3}}$ for left-helical neutrinos, a decrease of 15% (53.6 cm${^{-3}}$; 5%) for a halo (void) with respect to the standard calculation without including gravitational effects due to large scale structures. In terms of the total capture rate in a 100 g tritium detector, this translates in $4.9^{+1.1}_{-0.8}$ neutrinos per year for the Dirac case, as a function of the unknown neutrino mass scale, or 8.1 per year if neutrinos are Majorana. Thus although smaller than the factor two for the non-relativistic case, it is still large enough to be detected and it highlights the power of future $C_{\nu} B$ detectors, as an alternative to neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, to discover the neutrino nature.

From Dirac to Majorana: The cosmic neutrino background capture rate in the minimally extended Standard Model

Abstract:We investigate the capture rate of the cosmic neutrino background on tritium within the Standard Model, extended to incorporate three right-handed singlet neutrinos with explicit lepton-number violation. We consider a scenario where the 6×6 neutrino mixing matrix factorizes into three independent 2×2 pairs and analyze the states produced from weak interactions just before neutrino decoupling. Taking into account the unrestricted Majorana mass scale associated with lepton number violation, spanning from the grand unification scale to Planck-suppressed values, we observe a gradual transition in the capture rate from a purely Majorana neutrino to a purely (pseudo) Dirac neutrino. We demonstrate that the capture rate is modified if the lightest active neutrino is relativistic, and this can be used to constrain the tiniest value of mass-squared difference ∼10−35 eV2 , between the active-sterile pair, probed so far. Abstract:The paradigm-changing possibility of collective neutrino-antineutrino oscillations was recently advanced in analogy to collective flavor oscillations. However, the amplitude for the backward scattering process νp1ν ̄p2→νp2ν ̄p1 is helicity suppressed and vanishes for massless neutrinos, implying that there is no off-diagonal refractive index between ν and ν ̄ of a single flavor of massless neutrinos. For a nonvanishing mass, collective helicity oscillations are possible, representing de facto ν−ν ̄ oscillations in the Majorana case. Abstract:Finding out if neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles is known to be extremely difficult due to the smallness of neutrino mass and the fact that in the limit m ν = 0 both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos become Weyl fermions, i.e. are indistinguishable. There have been suggestions in the literature that in the case of processes with production of a neutrino-antineutrino pair (if neutrinos are Dirac particles) or two neutrinos (if they are of Majorana nature) quantum statistics may be of help. This is because for Majorana neutrinos quantum indistinguishability of identical particles requires the amplitude of the process to be antisymmetrized with respect to the interchange of the final-state neutrinos, whereas no such antisymmetrization must be done for Dirac neutrinos. It has been claimed that the resulting differences between the cross sections for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos persist even for arbitrarily small but not exactly vanishing neutrino mass. We demonstrate that, at least in the framework of the Standard Model, this is not the case. We also give a general proof that within the Standard Model quantum statistics does not help tell Dirac and Majorana neutrinos apart in the limit of negligibly small m ν / E .

Helicity-changing Decays of Cosmological Relic Neutrinos

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the possibility that massive neutrinos are unstable due to their invisible decays $\nu^{}_i \to \nu^{}_j + \phi$, where $\nu^{}_i$ and $\nu^{}_j$ (for $i, j = 1, 2, 3$) are any two of neutrino mass eigenstates with masses $m^{}_i > m^{}_j$ and $\phi$ is a massless Nambu-Goldstone boson, and explore the implications for the detection of cosmological relic neutrinos in the present Universe. First, we carry out a complete calculation of neutrino decay rates in the general case where the individual helicities of parent and daughter neutrinos are specified. Then, the invisible decays of cosmological relic neutrinos are studied and their impact on the capture rates on the beta-decaying nuclei (e.g., $\nu^{}_e + {^3{\rm H}} \to {^3{\rm He}} + e^-$) is analyzed. The invisible decays of massive neutrinos could substantially change the capture rates in the PTOLEMY-like experiments when compared to the case of stable neutrinos. In particular, we find that the helicity-changing decays of Dirac neutrinos play an important role whereas those of Majorana neutrinos have no practical effects. However, if a substantial fraction of heavier neutrinos decay into the lightest one, the detection of relic neutrinos will require a much higher energy resolution and thus be even more challenging.

Practical Dirac Majorana confusion theorem: Issues and Applicability

Abstract:We inspect the model-independent study of practical Dirac Majorana confusion theorem (pDMCT) -- a wide spread belief that the difference between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos via any kinematical observable would be practically impossible to determine because of the difference only being proportional to the square of neutrino mass -- in context of processes that have at least a neutrino antineutrino pair in their final state. We scrutinize the domain of applicability of pDMCT and also highlight those aspects that are often misunderstood. We try to clarify some of the frequently used concepts that are used to assert pDMCT as a generic feature irrespective of the process, or observable, such as the existence of any analytic continuity between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos in the limit mass(neutrino) -> 0. In summary, we illustrate that pDMCT is not any fundamental property of neutrinos, instead, it is a phenomenological feature of neutrino non-observation, depending on models and processes.

Abstract:Based on experimental discovery that the mass-square of neutrino is negative, a quantum equation for superluminal neutrino is proposed in comparison with Dirac equation and Dirac equation with imaginary mass. A virtual particle may also be viewed as superluminal one. Both the basic symmetry of space-time inversion and the maximum violation of space-inversion symmetry are emphasized.

Abstract:Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) is presently the only known experiment to distinguisch between Dirac neutrinos, different from their antiparticles, and Majorana neutrinos, identical with their antiparticles. In addition $0\nu\beta\beta$ allows to determine the absolute scale of the neutrino masses. This is not possible with neutrino oscillations. To determine the neutrino masses one must assume, that the light Majorana neutrino exchange is the leading mechanism for $0\nu\beta\beta$ and that the matrix element of this transition can ba calculated reliably. The experimental $0\nu\beta\beta$ transition amplitude in this mechanism is a product of the light left handed effective Majorana neutrino mass and of this transition matrix element. The different methods, Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA), Shell Model (SM), Projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (PHFB) and Interacting Boson Model (IBM2) used in the literature and the reliability of the matrix elements in these approaches are reviewed. In the second part it is investigated how one can determine the leading mechanism or mechanisms from the data of the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in different nuclei. Explicite expressions are given for the transition matrix elements. is shown, that possible interference terms allow to test CP (Charge and Parity conjugation) violation.

Abstract:We study the lepton number violating muon-positron conversion in nuclei mediated by the exchange of virtual light Majorana neutrinos. We found that a previously overlooked imaginary part of this amplitude plays an important role. The numerical calculation has been made for the experimentally interesting muon-positron conversion in Ti48 using realistic renormalized proton-neutron QRPA wave functions. We also discuss the very similar case of the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ca48 The ratio of muon-positron conversion over the total muon absorption has been computed taking into account the current constraints from neutrino oscillation phenomenology. We compare our results with the experimental limits as well as with previous theoretical predictions. We have found that the Majorana neutrino mode of muon-positron conversion in Ti48 is too small to be measurable in the foreseeable future.

Neutrino-nucleus scattering underpins oscillation experiments and probes nuclear structure, neutrinos offer a rare vantage point into collapsing stars and nuclear fission reactors, and techniques pioneered in neutrino nuclear-physics experiments are advancing quantum-sensing technologies. In this article, we review current and planned efforts at the intersection of neutrino and nuclear experiments.
