Abstract:A new polar coding scheme for higher order modulation is presented. The proposed scheme is based on multi-level coding (MLC) with natural labeling, where the bit-level corresponding to the sign-bit is generated in dependence on the previous bit-levels, such that the modulated symbols are distributed according to a target non-uniform distribution resulting in a shaping gain. This is realized by replacing the polar encoder in the sign-bit level by a successive cancellation (SC) decoder, such that the overall complexity is not increased compared to a conventional MLC scheme with polar codes. Numerical simulations show significant performance improvements of the proposed approach compared to conventional transmission schemes with uniform symbol distribution. By using more complex decoders (e.g. SC list decoder), the proposed scheme outperforms Gallager's random coding bound.

Abstract:An efficient scheme to increase the performance of polar codes at short and moderate block lengths is a concatenation of CRC code and a polar code. In order to obtain better result of the concatenation, a CRC code with best error control performance among all CRC codes with a fixed number of check bits has to be used. In this work we investigate CRC codes of 11 to 19 parity bits and determine those of them which have maximum minimum distance at any length it can be used. For CRC codes of 24 parity bits we were not able to perform complete search and we present the best obtained results. The investigation shows that there are better CRC polynomials of degrees 11, 16 and 24 than those suggested by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
Construction and analysis of polar and concatenated polar codes: practical approach

Abstract:We consider two problems related to polar codes. First is the problem of polar codes construction and analysis of their performance without Monte-Carlo method. The formulas proposed are the same as those in [Mori-Tanaka], yet we believe that our approach is original and has clear advantages. The resulting computational procedure is presented in a fast algorithm form which can be easily implemented on a computer. Secondly, we present an original method of construction of concatenated codes based on polar codes. We give an algorithm for construction of such codes and present numerical experiments showing significant performance improvement with respect to original polar codes proposed by Arıkan. We use the term \emph{concatenated code} not in its classical sense (e.g. [Forney]). However we believe that our usage is quite appropriate for the exploited construction. Further, we solve the optimization problem of choosing codes minimizing the block error of the whole concatenated code under the constraint of its fixed rate.

An Adaptive Successive Cancellation List Decoder for Polar Codes with Cyclic Redundancy Check

Abstract:In this letter, we propose an adaptive SC (Successive Cancellation)-List decoder for polar codes with CRC. This adaptive SC-List decoder iteratively increases the list size until the decoder outputs contain at least one survival path which can pass CRC. Simulation shows that the adaptive SC-List decoder provides significant complexity reduction. We also demonstrate that polar code (2048, 1024) with 24-bit CRC decoded by our proposed adaptive SC-List decoder with very large list size can achieve a frame error rate FER=0.001 at Eb/No=1.1dB, which is about 0.2dB from the information theoretic limit at this block length.

Abstract:An extension of polar codes is proposed, which allows some of the frozen symbols, called dynamic frozen symbols, to be data-dependent. A construction of polar codes with dynamic frozen symbols, being subcodes of extended BCH codes, is proposed. The proposed codes have higher minimum distance than classical polar codes, but still can be efficiently decoded using the successive cancellation algorithm and its extensions. The codes with Arikan, extended BCH and Reed-Solomon kernel are considered. The proposed codes are shown to outperform LDPC and turbo codes, as well as polar codes with CRC.

Abstract:Motivated by the need to communicate short control messages in 5G and beyond, this paper carefully designs codes for cyclic redundancy check (CRC)-aided list decoding of tail-biting convolutional codes (TBCCs) and polar codes. Both codes send a 32-bit message using an 11-bit CRC and 512 transmitted bits. We aim to provide a careful, fair comparison of the error performance and decoding complexity of polar and TBCC techniques for a specific case. Specifically, a TBCC is designed to match the rate of a (512, 43) polar code, and optimal 11-bit CRCs for both codes are designed. The paper examines the distance spectra of the polar and TBCC codes, illuminating the different distance structures for the two code types. We consider both adaptive and non-adaptive CRC-aided list decoding schemes. For polar codes, an adaptive decoder must start with a larger list size to avoid an error floor. For rate-32/512 codes with an 11-bit CRC, the optimized CRC-TBCC design achieves a lower total failure rate than the optimized CRC-polar design. Simulations showed that the optimized CRC-TBCC design achieved significantly higher throughput than the optimized CRC-polar design, so that the TBCC solution achieved a lower total failure rate while requiring less computational complexity.

Abstract:In this paper, we study polar codes from a practical point of view. In particular, we study concatenated polar codes and rate-compatible polar codes. First, we propose a concatenation scheme including polar codes and Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. We will show that our proposed scheme outperforms conventional concatenation schemes formed by LDPC and Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. We then study two rate-compatible coding schemes using polar codes. We will see that polar codes can be designed as universally capacity achieving rate-compatible codes over a set of physically degraded channels. We also study the effect of puncturing on polar codes to design rate-compatible codes.

Abstract:Polar coding gives rise to the first explicit family of codes that provably achieve capacity with efficient encoding and decoding for a wide range of channels. However, its performance at short blocklengths under standard successive cancellation decoding is far from optimal. A well-known way to improve the performance of polar codes at short blocklengths is CRC precoding followed by successive-cancellation list decoding. This approach, along with various refinements thereof, has largely remained the state of the art in polar coding since it was introduced in 2011. Recently, Arıkan presented a new polar coding scheme, which he called polarization-adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes. At short blocklengths, such codes offer a dramatic improvement in performance as compared to CRC-aided list decoding of conventional polar codes. PAC codes are based primarily upon the following main ideas: replacing CRC codes with convolutional precoding (under appropriate rate profiling) and replacing list decoding by sequential decoding. One of our primary goals in this paper is to answer the following question: is sequential decoding essential for the superior performance of PAC codes? We show that similar performance can be achieved using list decoding when the list size L is moderately large (say, L⩾128). List decoding has distinct advantages over sequential decoding in certain scenarios, such as low-SNR regimes or situations where the worst-case complexity/latency is the primary constraint. Another objective is to provide some insights into the remarkable performance of PAC codes. We first observe that both sequential decoding and list decoding of PAC codes closely match ML decoding thereof. We then estimate the number of low weight codewords in PAC codes, and use these estimates to approximate the union bound on their performance. These results indicate that PAC codes are superior to both polar codes and Reed-Muller codes. We also consider random time-varying convolutional precoding for PAC codes, and observe that this scheme achieves the same superior performance with constraint length as low as ν=2.
An Efficient List Decoder Architecture for Polar Codes

Abstract:Long polar codes can achieve the symmetric capacity of arbitrary binary-input discrete memoryless channels under a low complexity successive cancelation (SC) decoding algorithm. However, for polar codes with short and moderate code length, the decoding performance of the SC algorithm is inferior. The cyclic redundancy check (CRC) aided successive cancelation list (SCL) decoding algorithm has better error performance than the SC algorithm for short or moderate polar codes. In this paper, we propose an efficient list decoder architecture for the CRC aided SCL algorithm, based on both algorithmic reformulations and architectural techniques. In particular, an area efficient message memory architecture is proposed to reduce the area of the proposed decoder architecture. An efficient path pruning unit suitable for large list size is also proposed. For a polar code of length 1024 and rate $\frac{1}{2}$, when list size $L=2$ and 4, the proposed list decoder architecture is implemented under a TSMC 90nm CMOS technology. Compared with the list decoders in the literature, our decoder achieves 1.33 to 1.96 times hardware efficiency.

Abstract:A list decoding scheme for universal polar codes is presented. Our scheme applies to the universal polar codes first introduced by Sasoglu and Wang, and generalized to processes with memory by the authors. These codes are based on the concatenation of different polar transforms: a sequence of "slow" transforms and Arikan's original "fast" transform. List decoding of polar codes has been previously presented in the context of the fast transform. However, the slow transform is markedly different and requires new techniques and data structures. We show that list decoding is possible with space complexity $O(\mathcal{L} \cdot N)$ and time complexity $O(\mathcal{L} \cdot N \log N)$, where $N$ is the overall blocklength and $\mathcal{L}$ is the list size.

Abstract:Concatenating the state-of-the-art codes at moderate rates with repetition codes has emerged as a practical solution deployed in various standards for ultra-low-power devices such as in Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks. In this paper, we propose a novel concatenation mechanism for such applications which need to operate at very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. In the proposed scheme, the outer code is a hybrid polar code constructed in two stages, one with a binary kernel and another also with a binary kernel but applied over a binary extension field. The inner code is a non-binary multiplicative repetition code. This particular structure inherits low-complexity decoding structures of polar codes while enabling concatenation with an inner non-binary multiplicative repetition scheme. The decoding for the proposed scheme is done using cyclic redundancy check (CRC) aided successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder over AWGN channel. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid non-binary repeated polar code provides performance gain compared to a polar-repetition scheme with comparable decoding complexity.

Abstract:A heuristic construction of polar codes for successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding with a given list size is proposed to balance the trade-off between performance measured in frame error rate (FER) and decoding complexity. Furthermore, a construction based on dynamically frozen bits with constraints among the "low weight bits" (LWB) is presented. Simulation results show that the LWB-polar codes outperform the CRC-polar codes and the eBCH-polar codes under SCL decoding.

Abstract:This paper explores list decoding of convolutional and polar codes for short messages such as those found in the 5G physical broadcast channel. A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is used to select a codeword from a list of likely codewords. One example in the 5G standard encodes a 32-bit message with a 24-bit CRC and a 512-bit polar code with additional bits added by repetition to achieve a very low rate of 32/864. This paper shows that optimizing the CRC length improves the $E_b/N_0$ performance of this polar code, where $E_b/N_0$ is the ratio of the energy per data bit to the noise power spectral density. Furthermore, even better $E_b/N_0$ performance is achieved by replacing the polar code with a tail-biting convolutional code (TBCC) with a distance-spectrum-optimal (DSO) CRC. This paper identifies the optimal CRC length to minimize the frame error rate (FER) of a rate-1/5 TBCC at a specific value of $E_b/N_0$. We also show that this optimized TBCC/CRC can attain the same excellent $E_b/N_0$ performance with the very low rate of 32/864 of the 5G polar code, where the low rate is achieved through repetition. We show that the proposed TBCC/CRC concatenated code outperforms the PBCH polar code described in the 5G standard both in terms of FER and decoding run time. We also explore the tradeoff between undetected error rate and erasure rate as the CRC size varies.

Abstract:While long polar codes can achieve the capacity of arbitrary binary-input discrete memoryless channels when decoded by a low complexity successive cancelation (SC) algorithm, the error performance of the SC algorithm is inferior for polar codes with finite block lengths. The cyclic redundancy check (CRC) aided successive cancelation list (SCL) decoding algorithm has better error performance than the SC algorithm. However, current CRC aided SCL (CA-SCL) decoders still suffer from long decoding latency and limited throughput. In this paper, a reduced latency list decoding (RLLD) algorithm for polar codes is proposed. Our RLLD algorithm performs the list decoding on a binary tree, whose leaves correspond to the bits of a polar code. In existing SCL decoding algorithms, all the nodes in the tree are traversed and all possibilities of the information bits are considered. Instead, our RLLD algorithm visits much fewer nodes in the tree and considers fewer possibilities of the information bits. When configured properly, our RLLD algorithm significantly reduces the decoding latency and hence improves throughput, while introducing little performance degradation. Based on our RLLD algorithm, we also propose a high throughput list decoder architecture, which is suitable for larger block lengths due to its scalable partial sum computation unit. Our decoder architecture has been implemented for different block lengths and list sizes using the TSMC 90nm CMOS technology. The implementation results demonstrate that our decoders achieve significant latency reduction and area efficiency improvement compared with other list polar decoders in the literature.

Abstract:Some multilevel codes which are constructed based on polar codes have been introduced recently, and show good performance with elaborately designed rates at each level and special multistage decoder. However, the multistage decoding is usually implemented in a sequential manner, which might yield poor performance at lower levels since the corresponding component codes are decoded without any information from higher levels, and the decoding errors occurred at previous stages could hardly be corrected. Thus, an iterative multistage decoding algorithm for polar code based multilevel codes is introduced in this paper, which could further improve the performance by feeding the reliable information obtained at higher levels back to the first level, and correct the decoding errors occurred at lower levels. Our proposed algorithm has only moderate complexity, and it is found that, the first iteration contributes the most performance improvement.
CRC-Aided High-Rate Convolutional Codes With Short Blocklengths for List Decoding

Abstract:Recently, rate-1/n zero-terminated (ZT) and tail-biting (TB) convolutional codes (CCs) with cyclic redundancy check (CRC)-aided list decoding have been shown to closely approach the random-coding union (RCU) bound for short blocklengths. This paper designs CRC polynomials for rate- (n-1)/n ZT and TB CCs with short blocklengths. This paper considers both standard rate-(n-1)/n CC polynomials and rate- (n-1)/n designs resulting from puncturing a rate-1/2 code. The CRC polynomials are chosen to maximize the minimum distance d_min and minimize the number of nearest neighbors A_(d_min) . For the standard rate-(n-1)/n codes, utilization of the dual trellis proposed by Yamada et al. lowers the complexity of CRC-aided serial list Viterbi decoding (SLVD). CRC-aided SLVD of the TBCCs closely approaches the RCU bound at a blocklength of 128. This paper compares the FER performance (gap to the RCU bound) and complexity of the CRC-aided standard and punctured ZTCCs and TBCCs. This paper also explores the complexity-performance trade-off for three TBCC decoders: a single-trellis approach, a multi-trellis approach, and a modified single-trellis approach with pre-processing using the wrap around Viterbi algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss pre-transformed RM-Polar codes and cyclic redundancy check (CRC) concatenated pre-transformed RM-Polar codes. The simulation results show that the pre-transformed RM-Polar (256, 128+9) code concatenated with 9-bit CRC can achieve a frame error rate (FER) of 0.001 at Eb/No=1.95dB under the list decoding, which is about 0.05dB from the RCU bound. The pre-transformed RM-Polar (512, 256+9) concatenated with 9-bit CRC can achieve a FER of 0.001 at Eb/No=1.6dB under the list decoding, which is 0.15dB from the RCU bound.

Abstract:An efficient implementation of min-sum SC/list decoding of convolutional polar codes is proposed. The complexity of the proposed implementation of SC decoding is more than two times smaller than the straightforward implementation. Moreover, the proposed list decoding algorithm does not require to copy any LLRs during decoding.

Abstract:Polar codes under successive cancellation decoding proposed by Arıkan provably achieve the symmetric capacity of any given binary-input discrete memoryless channel. The successive cancellation list decoder for polar codes was described by Tal and Vardy as a generalization of the successive cancellation decoder of Arıkan. The performance of the successive cancellation list decoder is encouraging in practice. In this paper, we formalize the successive cancellation list decoder in our notation and prove that polar codes under successive cancellation list decoding achieve the symmetric capacity of any given binary-input discrete memoryless channel in theory as well. We also formalize the polar codes with CRC precoding of Tal and Vardy. In fact, we propose a family of more general codes, namely, precoded polar codes and prove that precoded polar codes under successive cancellation list decoding can achieve the symmetric capacity of any given binary-input discrete memoryless channel under some conditions.

For the proposed RLLD algorithm, all rate-0 nodes and part of rate-1 nodes are decoded instantly without traversing the corresponding subtree. A list maximum-likelihood decoding (LMLD) algorithm is proposed to decode the maximum likelihood (ML) nodes and the remaining rate-1 nodes. Moreover, a simplified LMLD (SLMLD) algorithm is also proposed to reduce the computational complexity of the LMLD algorithm. Suppose a partial parallel list decoder architecture with list size $L=4$ is used, for an (8192, 4096) polar code, the proposed RLLD algorithm can reduce the number of decoding clock cycles and decoding latency by 6.97 and 6.77 times, respectively.
