Abstract:Percolation is the simplest fundamental model in statistical mechanics that exhibits phase transitions signaled by the emergence of a giant connected component. Despite its very simple rules, percolation theory has successfully been applied to describe a large variety of natural, technological and social systems. Percolation models serve as important universality classes in critical phenomena characterized by a set of critical exponents which correspond to a rich fractal and scaling structure of their geometric features. In this review we will first outline the basic features of the ordinary model and take a glimpse at a number of selective variations and modifications of the original model. Directed percolation process will be also discussed as a prototype of systems displaying a nonequilibrium phase transition. After a short review on SLE, we will provide an overview on existence of the scaling limit and conformal invariance of the critical percolation. We will also establish a connection with the magnetic models. Recent applications of the percolation theory in natural and artificial landscapes are also reviewed.

Percolation fractal exponents without fractal geometry

Abstract:Classically, percolation critical exponents are linked to the power laws that characterize percolation cluster fractal properties. It is found here that the gradient percolation power laws are conserved even for extreme gradient values for which the frontier of the infinite cluster is no more fractal. In particular the exponent 7/4 which was recently demonstrated to be the exact value for the dimension of the so-called "hull" or external perimeter of the incipient percolation cluster keeps its value in describing the width and length of gradient percolation frontiers whatever the gradient value. Its origin is then not to be found in the thermodynamic limit. The comparison between numerical results and the exact results that can be obtained analytically for extreme values of the gradient suggests that there exist a unique power law from size 1 to infinity which describes the gradient percolation frontier, this law becoming a scaling law in the large system limit.

Abstract:We consider a model of first passage percolation (FPP) where the nearest-neighbor edges of the standard two-dimensional Euclidean lattice are equipped with random variables. These variables are i.i.d.\, nonnegative, continuous, and have a finite moment generating function in a neighborhood of $0$. We derive consequences about transverse increments of passage times, assuming the model satisfies certain properties. Approximately, the assumed properties are the following: We assume that the standard deviation of the passage time on scale $r$ is of some order $\sigma(r)$, and $\left\{\sigma(r), r > 0\right\}$ grows approximately as a power of $r$. Also, the tails of the passage time distributions for distance $r$ satisfy an exponential bound on a scale $\sigma(r)$ uniformly over $r$. In addition, the boundary of the limit shape in a neighborhood of some fixed direction $\theta$ has a uniform quadratic curvature. By transverse increment we mean the difference of passage times from the origin to a pair of points which are located as follows: they are approximately in the same direction, say $\theta$, from the origin; the direction of one of them from the other is the direction of the tangent of the boundary of the limit shape at the point on the limit shape in the direction $\theta$. The main consequence derived is the following. If $\sigma(r)$ varies as $r^\chi$ for some $\chi>0$, and $\xi$ is such that $\chi=2\xi-1$, then the fluctuation of the transverse increment of passage time between a pair of points situated at distance $r$ from each other is of the order of $r^{\chi/\xi}$.

Abstract:We consider first passage percolation (FPP) with passage times generated by a general class of models with long-range correlations on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 2$, including discrete Gaussian free fields, Ginzburg-Landau $\nabla \phi$ interface models or random interlacements as prominent examples. We show that the associated time constant is positive, the FPP distance is comparable to the Euclidean distance, and we obtain a shape theorem. We also present two applications for random conductance models (RCM) with possibly unbounded and strongly correlated conductances. Namely, we obtain a Gaussian heat kernel upper bound for RCMs with a general class of speed measures, and an exponential decay estimate for the Green function of RCMs with random killing measures.

Abstract:We study a geometric version of first-passage percolation on the complete graph, known as long-range first-passage percolation. Here, the vertices of the complete graph are embedded in the d -dimensional torus , and each edge e is assigned an independent transmission time , where is a rate-one exponential random variable associated with the edge e , denotes the torus-norm, and is a parameter. We are interested in the case , which corresponds to the instantaneous percolation regime for long-range first-passage percolation on studied by Chatterjee and Dey [14], and which extends first-passage percolation on the complete graph (the case) studied by Janson [24]. We consider the typical distance, flooding time, and diameter of the model. Our results show a 1, 2, 3-type result, akin to first-passage percolation on the complete graph as shown by Janson. The results also provide a quantitative perspective to the qualitative results observed by Chatterjee and Dey on .

Abstract:The simultaneous flow of two phases through porous media has long lacked a sound theoretical description, due, in large measure, to the complex geometry and topology of the pore space, and the chaotic, nearly random spatial distribution of the fluids. For some 20 years, a theory of flow through random media, percolation theory, has existed in the field of mathematical physics. In this paper, it is demonstrated that percolation theory describes the distribution of non-wetting fluid in common sandstones and limestones during capillary pressure and relative permeability measurements. In particular, the theory predicts the relative amounts of non-wetting fluid in each of three distinct fluid configurations: isolated, dead-end, and flow effective fluid.Porous media are herein idealized as random mixtures of solid and void to which concepts of percolation theory apply. For sinter-bodies a critical porosity, φc ⋍ 112, exists, below which the void space is not continuous across the sample. For many natural porous materials, e.g. sandstones and limestones, the dependence of residual non-wetting saturation upon porosity is roughly that which corresponds to the existence of a critical porosity, whose value is again 112. The distribution of the non-wetting phase during two phase flow, in particular, the amount of isolated and dead-end fluid, can be qualitatively predicted by simple graph models. The concepts of dead end and isolated fluid must be considered if relative permeability, capillary pressure, and other descriptors of two phase flow are to be understood.

Abstract:We study the class of endlessly single-mode all-silica photonic crystal fibers with a triangular air-hole cladding. We consider the sensibility to longitudinal nonuniformities and the consequences and limitations for realizing low-loss large-mode area photonic crystal fibers. We also discuss the dominating scattering mechanism and experimentally we confirm that both macro and micro-bending can be the limiting factor.

It contains a introduction to percolation theory, then concentrates on the case of Poisson-Boolean percolation. The majority of this document is dedicated to an detailed analysis of [DRT18]. This work is the result of an internship in Summer 2019 with Jean-Baptiste Gouéré at the University of Tours.

Abstract:In the previous decades, the theory of first passage percolation became a highly important area of probability theory. In this work, we will observe what can be said about the corresponding structure if we forget about the probability measure defined on the product space of edges and simply consider topology in the terms of residuality. We focus on interesting questions arising in the probabilistic setup that make sense in this setting, too. We will see that certain classical almost sure events, as the existence of geodesics have residual counterparts, while the notion of the limit shape or time constants gets as chaotic as possible.

Abstract:We study first passage percolation (FPP) on a Gromov-hyperbolic group $G$ with boundary $\partial G$ equipped with the Patterson-Sullivan measure $\nu$. We associate an i.i.d.\ collection of random passage times to each edge of a Cayley graph of $G$, and investigate classical questions about the asymptotics of first passage time as well as the geometry of geodesics in the FPP metric. Under suitable conditions on the passage time distribution, we show that the `velocity' exists in $\nu$-almost every direction $\xi\in \partial G$, and is almost surely constant by ergodicity of the $G-$action on $\partial G$. For every $\xi\in \partial G$, we also show almost sure coalescence of any two geodesic rays directed towards $\xi$. Finally, we show that the variance of the first passage time grows linearly with word distance along word geodesic rays in every fixed boundary direction. This provides an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Benjamini, Tessera, and Zeitouni.

Abstract:This monograph resolves—in a dense class of cases—several open problems concerning geodesics in i.i.d. first-passage percolation on Z d \mathbb {Z}^d . Our primary interest is in the empirical measures of edge-weights observed along geodesics from 0 0 to n ξ n{\boldsymbol \xi } , where ξ {\boldsymbol \xi } is a fixed unit vector. For various dense families of edge-weight distributions, we prove that these empirical measures converge weakly to a deterministic limit as n → ∞ n\to \infty , answering a question of Hoffman. These families include arbitrarily small L ∞ L^\infty -perturbations of any given distribution, almost every finitely supported distribution, uncountable collections of continuous distributions, and certain discrete distributions whose atoms can have any prescribed sequence of probabilities. Moreover, the constructions are explicit enough to guarantee examples possessing certain features, for instance: both continuous and discrete distributions whose support is all of [ 0 , ∞ ) [0,\infty ) , and distributions given by a density function that is k k -times differentiable. All results also hold for ξ {\boldsymbol \xi } -directed infinite geodesics. In comparison, we show that if Z d \mathbb {Z}^d is replaced by the infinite d d -ary tree, then any distribution for the weights admits a unique limiting empirical measure along geodesics. In both the lattice and tree cases, our methodology is driven by a new variational formula for the time constant, which requires no assumptions on the edge-weight distribution. Incidentally, this variational approach also allows us to obtain new convergence results for geodesic lengths, which have been unimproved in the subcritical regime since the seminal 1965 manuscript of Hammersley and Welsh.

Percolation of functionalized colloids on patterned substrates

Abstract:We study the percolation properties for a system of functionalized colloids on patterned substrates via Monte Carlo simulations. The colloidal particles are modeled as hard disks with three equally-distributed attractive patches on their perimeter. We describe the patterns on the substrate as circular potential wells of radius $R_p$ arranged in a regular square or hexagonal lattice. We find a nonmonotonic behavior of the percolation threshold (packing fraction) as a function of $R_p$. For attractive wells, the percolation threshold is higher than the one for clean (non-patterned) substrates if the circular wells are non-overlapping and can only be lower if the wells overlap. For repulsive wells we find the opposite behavior. In addition, at high packing fractions the formation of both structural and bond defects suppress percolation. As a result, the percolation diagram is reentrant with the non-percolated state occurring at very low and intermediate densities.

Abstract:In first-passage percolation, one assigns i.i.d. nonnegative weights $(t_e)$ to the edges of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and studies the induced distance (passage time) $T(x,y)$ between vertices $x$ and $y$. It is known that for $d=2$, the fluctuations of $T(x,y)$ are at least order $\sqrt{\log |x-y|}$ under mild assumptions on $t_e$. We study the question of fluctuation lower bounds for $T_n$, the minimal passage time between two opposite sides of an $n$ by $n$ square. The main result is that, under a curvature assumption, this quantity has fluctuations at least of order $n^{1/8-\epsilon}$ for any $\epsilon>0$ when the $t_e$ are exponentially distributed. As previous arguments to bound the fluctuations of $T(x,y)$ only give a constant lower bound for those of $T_n$ (even assuming curvature), a different argument, representing $T_n$ as a minimum of cylinder passage times, and deriving more detailed information about the distribution of cylinder times using the Markov property, is developed. As a corollary, we obtain the first polynomial lower bounds on higher central moments of the discrete torus passage time, under the same curvature assumption.

Abstract:We study a general class of percolation models in Euclidean space including long-range percolation, scale-free percolation, the weight-dependent random connection model and several other previously investigated models. Our focus is on the weak decay regime, in which inter-cluster long-range connection probabilities fall off polynomially with small exponent, and for which we establish several structural properties. Chief among them are the continuity of the bond percolation function and the transience of infinite clusters.

Abstract:We consider two different objects on super-critical Bernoulli percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ : the time constant for i.i.d. first-passage percolation (for $d\geq 2$) and the isoperimetric constant (for $d=2$). We prove that both objects are continuous with respect to the law of the environment. More precisely we prove that the isoperimetric constant of supercritical percolation in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is continuous in the percolation parameter. As a corollary we prove that normalized sets achieving the isoperimetric constant are continuous with respect to the Hausdroff metric. Concerning first-passage percolation, equivalently we consider the model of i.i.d. first-passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with possibly infinite passage times: we associate with each edge $e$ of the graph a passage time $t(e)$ taking values in $[0,+\infty]$, such that $\mathbf{P}[t(e)<+\infty] >p_c(d)$. We prove the continuity of the time constant with respect to the law of the passage times. This extends the continuity property previously proved by Cox and Kesten for first passage percolation with finite passage times.

Abstract:The study of first passage percolation (FPP) for the random interlacements model has been initiated in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2112.12096" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2112.12096">arXiv:2112.12096</a>, where it is shown that on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 3$, the FPP distance is comparable to the graph distance with high probability. In this article, we give an asymptotically sharp lower bound on this last probability, which additionally holds on a large class of transient graphs with polynomial volume growth and polynomial decay of the Green function. When considering the interlacement set in the low-intensity regime, the previous bound is in fact valid throughout the near-critical phase. In low dimension, we also present two applications of this FPP result: sharp large deviation bounds on local uniqueness of random interlacements, and on the capacity of a random walk in a ball.

Polydispersity in Percolation

Abstract:Every realistic instance of a percolation problem is faced with some degree of polydispersity, e.g., the pore size distribution of an inhomogeneous medium, the size distribution of filler particles in composite materials, or the vertex degree of agents in a community network. Such polydispersity is a welcome, because simple to perform, generalization of many theoretical approaches deployed to predict percolation thresholds. These theoretical studies independently found very similar conceptual results for vastly different systems, namely, that the percolation threshold is insensitive to the particular distribution controlling the polydispersity and rather depends only on the first few moments of the distribution. In this article we explain this frequently observed pattern using branching processes. The key observation is that a reasonable degree of polydispersity does effectively not alter the structure of the network that forms at the percolation threshold. As a consequence, the critical parameters of the monodisperse system can be analytically continued to account for polydispersity.

The fifty-year quest for universality in percolation theory in high dimensions

Abstract:Although well described by mean-field theory in the thermodynamic limit, scaling has long been puzzling for finite systems in high dimensions. This raised questions about the efficacy of the renormalization group and foundational concepts such as universality, finite-size scaling and hyperscaling, until recently believed not to be applicable above the upper critical dimension. Significant theoretical progress has been made resolving these issues, and tested in numerous simulational studies of spin models. This progress rests upon superlinearity of correlation length, a notion that for a long time encountered resistance but is now broadly accepted. Percolation theory brings added complications such as proliferation of interpenetrating clusters in apparent conflict with suggestions coming from random-graph asymptotics and a dearth of reliable simulational guidance. Here we report on recent theoretical progress in percolation theory in the renormalization group framework in high dimensions that accommodates superlinear correlation and renders most of the above concepts mutually compatible under different boundary conditions. Results from numerical simulations for free and periodic boundary conditions which differentiate between previously competing theories are also presented. Although still fragmentary, these Monte Carlo results support the new framework which restores the renormalization group and foundational concepts on which it rests.

Abstract:A well studied family of random fractals called fractal percolation is discussed. We focus on the projections of fractal percolation on the plane. Our goal is to present stronger versions of the classical Marstrand theorem, valid for almost every realization of fractal percolation. The extensions go in three directions: {itemize} the statements work for all directions, not almost all, the statements are true for more general projections, for example radial projections onto a circle, in the case $\dim_H >1$, each projection has not only positive Lebesgue measure but also has nonempty interior. {itemize}
