Abstract:We briefly review the observations of the solar photosphere and pinpoint some open questions related to the magnetohydrodynamics of this layer of the Sun. We then discuss the current modelling efforts, addressing among other problems, that of the origin of supergranulation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical large eddy simulations of solar surface convection using realistic model physics is conducted. The effects of magnetic fields on thermal structure of convective motions into radiative layers, the range of convection cell sizes and penetration depths of convection is investigated. We simulate a some portion of the solar photosphere and the upper layers of the convection zone, a region extending 30 x 30 Mm horizontally from 0 Mm down to 18 Mm below the visible surface. We solve equations of the fully compressible radiation magnetohydrodynamics with dynamical viscosity and gravity. For numerical simulation we use: 1)realistic initial model of Sun and equation of state and opacities of stellar matter, 2) high order conservative TVD scheme for solution magnetohydrodynamics, 3) diffusion approximation for solution radiative transfer 4) calculation dynamical viscosity from subgrid scale modelling. Simulations are conducted on horizontal uniform grid of 320 x 320 and with 144 nonuniformly spaced vertical grid points on the 128 processors of supercomputer MBC-1500 with distributed memory multiprocessors in Russian Academy of Sciences.
Numerical MHD simulations of solar flares and their associated small-scale structures

Abstract:ABSTRACT Using numerical simulations, we study the formation and dynamics of solar flares in a local region of the solar atmosphere. The magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations describe the dynamic evolution of flares, including space-dependent and anomalous magnetic resistivity and highly anisotropic thermal conduction on a 2.5 D slice. We adopt an initial solar atmospheric model in magnetohydrostatic equilibrium, with a magnetic configuration consisting of a vertical current sheet, which helps trigger the magnetic reconnection process. Specifically, we study three scenarios, two with only resistivity and the third with resistivity plus thermal conduction. The main results of the numerical simulations show differences in the global morphology of the flares, including the post-flare loops and the current sheet in three cases. In particular, localized resistivity produces more substructure around the post-flare loops that could be related to the Ritchmyer–Meshkov Instability (RMI). Furthermore, in the scenario of anomalous resistivity, we identify the formation of a plasmoid and a jet at coronal heights. On the other hand, in the scenario with resistivity plus thermal conduction, the post-flare loops are smooth, and no apparent substructures develop. Besides, in the z-component of the current density for the Res + TC case, we observe the development of multiple magnetic islands generated due to the Tearing instability in the non-linear regime.

Vortices, shocks, and heating in the solar photosphere: effect of a magnetic field

Abstract:Aims: We study the differences between non-magnetic and magnetic regions in the flow and thermal structure of the upper solar photosphere. Methods: Radiative MHD simulations representing a quiet region and a plage region, respectively, which extend into the layers around the temperature minimum, are analyzed. Results: The flow structure in the upper photospheric layers of the two simulations is considerably different: the non-magnetic simulation is dominated by a pattern of moving shock fronts while the magnetic simulation shows vertically extended vortices associated with magnetic flux concentrations. Both kinds of structures induce substantial local heating. The resulting average temperature profiles are characterized by a steep rise above the temperature minimum due to shock heating in the non-magnetic case and by a flat photospheric temperature gradient mainly caused by Ohmic dissipation in the magnetic run. Conclusions: Shocks in the quiet Sun and vortices in the strongly magnetized regions represent the dominant flow structures in the layers around the temperature minimum. They are closely connected with dissipation processes providing localized heating.

Abstract:To study the structure of spatially unresolved features of the solar photosphere, we calculated the Stokes profiles of seven photospheric iron lines using two-dimensional nonstationary MHD models of solar granulation for various amounts of magnetic flux (0, 10, 20, 30 mT). We investigate variations in the absolute wavelength shifts and bisectors of the I profiles, as well as variations in the zero-crossing wavelength shifts, amplitude and area asymmetry of the V profiles as functions of magnetic field strength and time. The center-to-limb variations of the Stokes profiles are analyzed. The iron abundance is found to be 7.57, with the photosphere inhomogeneities taken into account. Although most of the spectral effects simulated within the scope of the two-dimensional MHD models are in satisfactory agreement with observational data, these models cannot always give a quantitative agreement. The absolute wavelength shifts of the Stokes profiles of Fe II lines calculated with the MHD models are substantially smaller than the observed ones.

Abstract:A three‐dimensional compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation in the spherical coordinates is presented for the propagation of MHD waves in a structured solar atmosphere by using the fractional step method. An initial magnetic field profile that has the characteristics of the open configuration at the pole and closed configuration at the equator is used. The initial state of the solar atmosphere consists of the chromosphere and corona; thus the transition region from the photosphere is approximated. The purpose of this study is to understand the nature of propagation MHD waves in a two‐layer solar atmosphere. Thus a pressure pulse is added at the bottom of the chromosphere (i.e., r = 1 Rs). We compare the response of this case with one in which we introduce the pulse at the bottom of the corona (i.e., r = 1.018 Rs). We find that (1) where the disturbance is initiated at the bottom of the chromosphere, a pair of fast mode waves and a slow mode MHD wave are generated. The pair of fast mode MHD waves are expansion waves and their propagation speeds increase with increasing height, (2) if the disturbance is initiated at the bottom of the corona, (r = 1.018 Rs), we observed a pair of fast and slow mode MHD waves propagating upward to the corona and another pair propagating downward toward the photosphere, respectively. We suggest that the model has the potential to be used to show the correspondence between observed flare initiation Moreton waves of the chromosphere and Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope waves in the low corona.

Abstract:The magnetosphere is the outermost layer of the geospace, and the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetosphere is the key element of the space weather cause-and-effect chain process from the Sun to Earth, which is one of the most challenging scientific problems in the geospace weather study. The nonlinearity, multiple component, and time-dependent nature of the geospace make it very difficult to describe the physical process in geospace using traditional analytic analysis approach. Numerical simulations, a new research tool developed in recent decades, have a deep impact on the theory and application of the geospace. MHD simulations started at the end of the 1970s, and the initial study was limited to two-dimensional (2D) cases. Due to the intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) characteristics of the geospace, 3D MHD simulations emerged in the 1980s, in an attempt to model the large-scale structures and fundamental physical processes in the magnetosphere. They started to combine with the space exploration missions in the 1990s and make comparisons with observations. Physics-based space weather forecast models started to be developed in the 21st century. Currently only a few space-power countries such as USA and Japan have developed 3D magnetospheric MHD models. With the rapid advance of space science in China, we have developed a new global MHD model, namely PPMLR-MHD, which has high order spatial accuracy and low numerical dissipation. In this review, we will briefly introduce the global 3D MHD modeling, especially the PPMLR-MHD code, and summarize our recent work based on the PPMLR-MHD model, with an emphasis on the interaction of interplanetary shocks with the magnetosphere, large-scale current systems, reconnection voltage and transpolar potential drop, and Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability at the magnetopause.

Magnetochronology of solar-type star dynamos

Abstract:Aims. In this study, we analyse the magnetic field properties of a set of 15 global magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations of solar-type star dynamos conducted using the ASH code. Our objective is to enhance our understanding of these properties by comparing theoretical results to current observations, and to finally provide fresh insights into the field. Methods. We analysed the rotational and magnetic properties as a function of various stellar parameters (mass, age and rotation rate) in a 'Sun in time' approach in our extended set of 3D MHD simulations. To facilitate direct comparisons with stellar magnetism observations using various Zeeman-effect techniques, we decomposed the numerical data into vectorial spherical harmonics. Results. A comparison of the trends we find in our simulations set reveals a promising overall agreement with the observational context of stellar magnetism, enabling us to suggest a plausible scenario for the magneto-rotational evolution of solar-type stars. In particular, we find that the magnetic field may reach a minimum amplitude at a transition value of the Rossby number near unity. This may have important consequences on the long-term evolution of solar-type stars, by impacting the relation between stellar age, rotation and magnetism. This supports the need for future observational campaigns, especially for stars in the high Rossby number regime.

Abstract:Global dynamo simulations solving the equations of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) have been a tool of astrophysicists who try to understand the magnetism of the Sun for several decades now. During recent years many fundamental issues in dynamo theory have been studied in detail by means of local numerical simulations that simplify the problem and allow the study of physical effects in isolation. Global simulations, however, continue to suffer from the age‐old problem of too low spatial resolution, leading to much lower Reynolds numbers and scale separation than in the Sun. Reproducing the internal rotation of the Sun, which plays a crucial role in the dynamo process, has also turned out to be a very difficult problem. In the present paper the current status of global dynamo simulations of the Sun is reviewed. Emphasis is put on efforts to understand how the large‐scale magnetic fields, i.e. whose length scale is greater than the scale of turbulence, are generated in the Sun. Some lessons from mean‐field theory and local simulations are reviewed and their possible implications to the global models are discussed. Dynamics of the photosphere along the solar cycle from SDO/HMI

Abstract:As the global magnetic field of the Sun has an activity cycle, one expects to observe some variation of the dynamical properties of the flows visible in the photosphere. We investigate the flow field during the solar cycle by analysing SDO/HMI observations of continuum intensity, Doppler velocity and longitudinal magnetic field. We first picked data at disk center during 6 years along the solar cycle with a 48-hour time step in order to study the overall evolution of the continuum intensity and magnetic field. Then we focused on thirty 6-hour sequences of quiet regions without any remnant of magnetic activity separated by 6 months, in summer and winter, when disk center latitude B0 is close to zero. The horizontal velocity was derived from the local correlation tracking technique over a field of view of 216.4Mm x 216.4Mm located at disk center. Our measurements at disk center show the stability of the flow properties between meso- and supergranular scales along the solar cycle. The network magnetic field, produced locally at disk center independently from large scale dynamo, together with continuum contrast, vertical and horizontal flows, seem to remain constant during the solar cycle.

Numerical simulation of the interaction between solar granules and small-scale magnetic fields

Abstract:We have carried out numerical simulation based on the equations of radiation magnetohydrodynamics to study the interaction of solar granules and small-scale magnetic fields in photospheric regions with various magnetic fluxes. Four sequences of 2D time-dependent models were calculated for photospheric regions with average vertical magnetic fluxes of 0, 10, 20, and 30 mT. The models exhibit no substantial variations in their temperature structure with varying average field strength, while the density and gas pressure profiles display gross changes. The solar granulation brightness field also varies substantially with magnetic flux. The contribution of the small-scale component to the intensity power spectrum increases with average field strength, whereas the large-scale component (of about a granule size) contributes less, the total rms intensity fluctuations being approximately the same. Thus the observed decrease in rms intensity fluctuations with growing average magnetic flux can be interpreted as smoothing of the small-scale component in the power spectrum by the modulation transfer function of the telescope.

Abstract:We develop a general description of how information propagates through a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) system based on the method of characteristics and use that to formulate numerical boundary conditions that are intrinsically consistent with the MHD equations. Our formulation includes two major advances for simulations of the Sun. First, we derive data-driven boundary conditions that optimally match the state of the plasma inferred from a time series of observations of a boundary (e.g., the solar photosphere). Second, our method directly handles random noise and systematic bias in the observations, and finds a solution for the boundary evolution that is strictly consistent with MHD and maximally consistent with the observations. We validate the method against a Ground Truth (GT) simulation of an expanding spheromak. The data-driven simulation can reproduce the GT simulation above the photosphere with high fidelity when driven at high cadence. Errors progressively increase for lower driving cadence until a threshold cadence is reached and the driven simulation can no longer accurately reproduce the GT simulation. However, our characteristic formulation of the boundary conditions still requires adherence of the boundary evolution to the MHD equations even when the driven solution departs from the true solution in the driving layer. That increasing departure clearly indicates when additional information at the boundary is needed to fully specify the correct evolution of the system. The method functions even when no information about the evolution of some variables on the lower boundary is available, albeit with a further decrease in fidelity.

On the extrapolation of magneto-hydro-static equilibria on the sun

Abstract:Modeling the interface region between solar photosphere and corona is challenging, because the relative importance of magnetic and plasma forces change by several orders of magnitude. While the solar corona can be modeled by the force-free assumption, we need to take care about plasma forces (pressure gradient and gravity) in photosphere and chromosphere, here within the magneto-hydro-static (MHS) model. We solve the MHS equations with the help of an optimization principle and use vector magnetogram as boundary condition. Positive pressure and density are ensured by replacing them with two new basic variables. The Lorentz force during optimization is used to update the plasma pressure on the bottom boundary, which makes the new extrapolation works even without pressure measurement on the photosphere. Our code is tested by using a linear MHS model as reference. From the detailed analyses, we find that the newly developed MHS extrapolation recovers the reference model at high accuracy. The MHS extrapolation is, however, numerically more expensive than the nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) extrapolation and consequently one should limit their application to regions where plasma forces become important, e.g. in a layer of about 2 Mm above the photosphere.

Abstract:A comprehensive overview is presented of recent observational and theoretical results on solar wind structures and fluctuations and magnetohydrodynamic waves and turbulence, with preference given to phenomena in the inner heliosphere. Emphasis is placed on the progress made in the past decade in the understanding of the nature and origin of especially small-scale, compressible and incompressible fluctuations. Turbulence models to describe the spatial transport and spectral transfer of the fluctuations in the inner heliosphere are discussed, and results from direct numerical simulations are dealt with. Intermittency of solar wind fluctuations and their statistical distributions are briefly investigated. Studies of the heating and acceleration effects of the turbulence on the background wind are critically surveyed. Finally, open questions concerning the origin, nature and evolution of the fluctuations are listed, and possible avenues and perspectives for future research are outlined.
Multifluid modeling of magnetosonic wave propagation in the solar chromosphere -- effects of impact ionization and radiative recombination

Abstract:In order to study chromospheric magnetosonic wave propagation including, for the first time, the effects of ion-neutral interactions in the partially ionized solar chromosphere, we have developed a new multi-fluid computational model, accounting for ionization and recombination reactions in gravitationally stratified magnetized collisional media. The two-fluid model used in our 2D numerical simulations treats neutrals as a separate fluid and considers charged species (electrons and ions) within the resistive MHD approach with Coulomb collisions and anisotropic heat flux determined by Braginskii's transport coefficients. The electromagnetic fields are evolved according to the full Maxwell equations and the solenoidality of the magnetic field is enforced with a hyperbolic divergence cleaning scheme. The initial density and temperature profiles are similar to VAL III chromospheric model in which dynamical, thermal and chemical equilibrium are considered to ensure comparison to existing MHD models and avoid artificial numerical heating. In this initial setup we include simple homogeneous flux tube magnetic field configuration and an external photospheric velocity driver to simulate the propagation of MHD waves in the partially ionized reactive chromosphere. In particular, we investigate the loss of chemical equilibrium and the plasma heating related to the steepening of fast magnetosonic wave fronts in the gravitationally stratified medium.

One-dimensional, geometrically stratified semi-empirical models of the quiet-Sun photosphere and lower chromosphere

Abstract:One-dimensional, semi-empirical models of the solar atmosphere are widely employed in numerous contexts within solar physics, ranging from the determination of element abundances and atomic parameters to studies of the solar irradiance and from Stokes inversions to coronal extrapolations. These models provide the physical parameters (i.e. temperature, gas pressure, etc.) in the solar atmosphere as a function of the continuum optical depth $\tau_{\rm c}$. The transformation to the geometrical $z$ scale (i.e. vertical coordinate) is provided via vertical hydrostatic equilibrium. Our aim is to provide updated, one-dimensional, semi-empirical models of the solar atmosphere as a function of $z,$ but employing the more general case of three-dimensional magneto-hydrostatic equilibrium (MHS) instead of vertical hydrostatic equilibrium (HE). We employed a recently developed Stokes inversion code that, along with non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects, considers MHS instead of HE. This code is applied to spatially and temporally resolved spectropolarimetric observations of the quiet Sun obtained with the CRISP instrument attached to the Swedish Solar Telescope. We provide average models for granules, intergranules, dark magnetic elements, and overall quiet-Sun as a function of both $\tau_{\rm c}$ and $z$ from the photosphere to the lower chromosphere. We demonstrate that, in these quiet-Sun models, the effect of considering MHS instead of HE is negligible. However, employing MHS increases the consistency of the inversion results before averaging. We surmise that in regions with stronger magnetic fields (i.e. pores, sunspots, network) the benefits of employing the magneto-hydrostatic approximation will be much more palpable.

NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF QUIET SUN MAGNETISM: ON THE CONTRIBUTION FROM A SMALL-SCALE DYNAMO

Abstract:We present a series of radiative MHD simulations addressing the origin and distribution of the mixed polarity magnetic field in the solar photosphere. To this end, we consider numerical simulations that cover the uppermost 2–6 Mm of the solar convection zone and we explore scales ranging from 2 km to 25 Mm. We study how the strength and distribution of the magnetic field in the photosphere and subsurface layers depend on resolution, domain size, and boundary conditions. We find that 50% of the magnetic energy at the τ = 1 level comes from fields with the less than 500 G strength and that 50% of the energy resides on scales smaller than about 100 km. While the probability distribution functions are essentially independent of resolution, properly describing the spectral energy distribution requires grid spacings of 8 km or smaller. The formation of flux concentrations in the photosphere exceeding 1 kG requires a mean vertical field strength greater than 30–40 G at τ = 1. The filling factor of kG flux concentrations increases with overall domain size as the magnetic field becomes organized by larger, longer-lived flow structures. A solution with a mean vertical field strength of around 85 G at τ = 1 requires a subsurface rms field strength increasing with depth at the same rate as the equipartition field strength. We consider this an upper limit for the quiet Sun field strength, which implies that most of the convection zone is magnetized close to the equipartition. We discuss these findings in view of recent high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of quiet Sun magnetism.

Modelling 3D magnetic networks in a realistic solar atmosphere

Abstract:The magnetic network extending from the photosphere (solar radius $\simeq R_\odot$) to lower corona ($R_\odot + 10$ Mm) plays an important role in the heating mechanisms of the solar atmosphere. Here we further develop the models with realistic open magnetic flux tubes of the authors in order to model more complicated configurations. Closed magnetic loops, and combinations of closed and open magnetic flux tubes are modelled. These are embedded within a stratified atmosphere, derived from observationally motivated semi-empirical and data-driven models subject to solar gravity and capable of spanning from the photosphere up into the chromosphere and lower corona. Constructing a magnetic field comprising self-similar magnetic flux tubes, an analytic solution for the kinetic pressure and plasma density is derived. Combining flux tubes of opposite polarity it is possible to create a steady background magnetic field configuration modelling a solar atmosphere exhibiting realistic stratification. The result can be applied to SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI and other magnetograms from the solar surface, upon which photospheric motions can be simulated to explore the mechanism of energy transport. We demonstrate this powerful and versatile method with an application to Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager data.

Solar internetwork magnetic fields: Statistical comparison between observations and MHD simulations

Abstract:Although the magnetic fields in the quiet Sun account for the majority of the magnetic energy in the solar photosphere, inferring their exact spatial distribution, origin, and evolution poses an important challenge because the signals lie at the limit of todays instrumental precision. This severely hinders and biases our interpretations, which are mostly made through nonlinear model-fitting approaches. Our goal is to directly compare simulated and observed polarization signals in the FeI 630.1 nm and 630.2 nm spectral lines in the solar internetwork. This way, we aim to constrain the mechanism responsible for the generation of the quiet Sun magnetism while avoiding the biases that plague other diagnostic methods. We used three different three-dimensional radiative magneto-hydrodynamic simulations representing different scenarios of magnetic field generation in the internetwork: small-scale dynamo, decay of active regions, and horizontal flux emergence. We synthesized Stokes profiles at different viewing angles and degraded them according to the instrumental specifications of the spectro-polarimeter on the Hinode satellite. Finally, we statistically compared the simulated spectra to the observations at the appropriate viewing angles. The small-scale dynamo simulation reproduced best the statistical properties of the observed polarization signals. This is especially prominent for the disk center viewing geometry, where the agreement is excellent. Moving toward more inclined lines of sight, the agreement worsens slightly. The agreement between the small-scale dynamo simulation and observations at the disk center suggests that small-scale dynamo action plays an important role in the generation of quiet Sun magnetism. However, the magnetic field around 50 km above the photosphere in this simulation does not reproduce observations as well as at the very base of the photosphere.

Simulations of solar and stellar dynamos and their theoretical interpretation

Abstract:We review the state of the art of three dimensional numerical simulations of solar and stellar dynamos. We summarize fundamental constraints of numerical modelling and the techniques to alleviate these restrictions. Brief summary of the relevant observations that the simulations seek to capture is given. We survey the current progress of simulations of solar convection and the resulting large-scale dynamo. We continue to studies that model the Sun at different ages and to studies of stars of different masses and evolutionary stages. Both simulations and observations indicate that rotation, measured by the Rossby number which is the ratio of rotation period and convective turnover time, is a key ingredient in setting the overall level and characteristics of magnetic activity. Finally, efforts to understand global 3D simulations in terms of mean-field dynamo theory are discussed.
