Abstract:We investigate the structure, chemical bonding, electronic properties, and magnetic behavior of a three-dimensional graphitic network in aba and aaa stacking with intercalated transition metal atoms (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu). Using density functional theory, we find induced spin-polarization of the C atoms both when the graphene sheets are aba stacked (forming graphite) and aaa stacked (resembling bi-layer graphene). The magnetic moment induced by Mn, Fe, and Co turns out to vary from 1.38 {\mu}B to 4.10 {\mu}B, whereas intercalation of Ni and Cu does not lead to a magnetic state. The selective induction of spin-polarization can be utilized in spintronic and nanoelectronic applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: **How to induce magnetism by inserting transition metal atoms into the graphene system and study the changes in its structure, chemical bonding, electronic properties and magnetic behavior**. Specifically, the authors used density functional theory (Density Functional Theory, DFT) to study the property changes of the three - dimensional graphite network after inserting transition metal atoms such as Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu in aba and aaa stacking modes. The main focuses are as follows: 1. **Inducing spin polarization**: It was found that inserting transition metal atoms between graphene layers can induce spin polarization of carbon atoms. This phenomenon exists for both aba stacking (forming graphite) and aaa stacking (similar to bilayer graphene). 2. **Change in magnetic moment**: The magnetic moments after inserting different transition metal atoms are different. The magnetic moments of Mn, Fe and Co vary between 1.38 µB and 4.10 µB, while the insertion of Ni and Cu does not lead to the emergence of a magnetic state. 3. **Application prospects**: Selective induction of spin polarization can find applications in the fields of spintronics and nanoelectronics. ### Key formula - **Cohesive Energy**: \[ E_{\text{coh}}=\frac{E_{\text{cell}}-\sum E_{\text{atom}}-E_d}{n} \] where \(E_{\text{cell}}\) is the total energy of a cell containing \(n\) atoms, and \(E_{\text{atom}}\) and \(E_d\) are the total energies of isolated carbon atoms and doped atoms respectively. ### Summary This research reveals the influence of the insertion of transition metal atoms on the magnetism of the graphene system through theoretical calculations, providing a theoretical basis for the future development of graphene - based spintronic devices.
