Abstract:3roton-antiproton elastic scattering at cm energy 540 GeV has been studied in the t range 0.14 ⩽ −t ⩽ 0.26 GeV2. The data is well fitted by an exponential form exp(bt) with b = 13.3 ± 1.5 GeV−2.

Abstract:Multiparton interactions are a fascinating phenomenon that occur in almost every high-energy hadron-hadron collision yet are remarkably difficult to study quantitatively. In this Letter, we present a strategy to optimally disentangle multiparton interactions from the primary scattering in a collision. That strategy enables probes of multiparton interactions that are significantly beyond the state of the art, including their characteristic momentum scale, the interconnection between primary and secondary scatters, and the pattern of three and potentially even more simultaneous hard scatterings. Abstract:This article summarizes main developments of the hadron colliders and physics results obtained since their inception around forty years ago. The increase in the collision energy of over two orders of magnitude and even larger increases in luminosity provided experiments with unique data samples. Developments of full acceptance detectors, particle identification and analysis methods provided fundamental discoveries and ultra-precise measurements which culminated in the completion and in depth verification of the Standard Model. Hadron Collider Physics symposium provided opportunities for those working at hadron colliders to share results of their research since 1979 and helped greatly to develop the field of particle physics.

Abstract:At wide angles in a storage ring environment, a substantial part of the energy seen by a hadron calorimeter can be in the form of very low momentum particles such as jet fragments or resonance cascade decay products. Data are presented on the deviations from Gaussian resolution and linear response for such low momentum particles. The differing responses to incident e-, μ-, π+-, K+-, p and at momenta below 10 GeV/c are also compared.

Abstract:Coherence phenomena, the increase with energy of coherence length and the non-universality of parton structure of the effective Pomeron are explained. New hard phenomena directly calculable in QCD such as diffractive electroproduction of states with $M^2\ll Q^2$ and the color transparency phenomenon as well as new options to measure the light-cone wave functions of various hadrons are considered. An analogue of Bjorken scaling is predicted for the diffractive electroproduction of $\rho$ mesons at large momentum transfers and for the production of large rapidity gap events, as observed at HERA. A phenomenological QCD evolution equation is suggested to calculate the basic characteristics of the large rapidity gap events. The increase of parton densities at small $x$ as well as new means to disentangle experimentally soft and hard physics are considered. We discuss constraints on the increase of deep inelastic amplitudes with $Q^2$ derived from the inconsistency of QCD predictions for inclusive and exclusive processes and from unitarity of the S matrix for collisions of wave packets. New ways to probe QCD physics of hard processes at large longitudinal distances and to answer the long standing problems on the origin of the Pomeron are suggested. Unresolved problems and perspectives of small $x$ physics are also outlined.

Abstract:We describe new QCD fits to diffractive cross sections measured at HERA and we use the parton densities derived from these fits to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction in double Pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We discuss the existence of exclusive events in this dijet channel and some prospects are given for the LHC.

Abstract:Ground state stable nuclei typically have near-spherical geometries but may exhibit exotic shapes and form α -particle clusters within their bulk if given excitation energy and/or angular momentum. It is predicted that such clustering can promote the production of angular-momentum stabilized toroidal nuclei. Previous experiment and theory suggest that such states may be evidenced by narrow resonances at high excitation energy in peripheral intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions. There has been recent focus on potential evidence for toroidal states in the α -particle disassembly of Si28 in collisions of Si28+C12 at 35 MeV/nucleon; however, prior evidence is limited by the angular resolution and statistical uncertainties that exist in the measurement. The present work aims to measure the excitation energy distribution for these disassembly events with improved angular resolution and reduced statistical uncertainty using the Forward Array Using Silicon Technology (FAUST). FAUST is equipped with resistive dual-axis duolateral (DADL) position-sensitive silicon detectors capable of submillimeter position resolution. The performance and response of the array was previously characterized in detail to accurately predict the expected resolution of measuring narrow resonances. The measured excitation energy distributions for 7- and 8- α disassembly events showed no strong evidence for highly excited states at the cross section and widths suggested by previous experiment. Further investigation of collision properties that lead to these exit channels revealed challenges in isolating clean projectile-mass decays, where many 7- α events do not originate from a single Si28 source. A statistical likelihood analysis was performed to determine the sensitivity of the present measurement for confidently determining resonant yield, providing an upper limit to toroidal high-spin isomer cross section as a function of the excitation energy and width of potential states. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.054615 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Collisions between prolate uranium nuclei are used to study how particle production and azimuthal anisotropies depend on initial geometry in heavy-ion collisions. We report the two- and four-particle cumulants, $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_2\{4\}$, for charged hadrons from U+U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 193 GeV and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Nearly fully overlapping collisions are selected based on the amount of energy deposited by spectators in the STAR Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs). Within this sample, the observed dependence of $v_2\{2\}$ on multiplicity demonstrates that ZDC information combined with multiplicity can preferentially select different overlap configurations in U+U collisions. An initial-state model with gluon saturation describes the slope of $v_2\{2\}$ as a function of multiplicity in central collisions better than one based on Glauber with a two-component multiplicity model.

Abstract:Hadronic diffraction has become a hot and fashionable subject in recent years due to the great interest triggered by the HERA and Tevatron data. These data have helped to put the field in a different perspective paving the road to a hopefully more complete understanding than hitherto achieved. The forthcoming data in the next few years from even higher energies (LHC) promise to sustain this interest for a long time. It is, therefore, necessary to provide the younger generations with as complete as possible discussion of the main developments that have marked the growth of high energy diffractive physics in the past and to assess the present state of the art. For this reason, this part will be by far the largest. The analysis of the relationship between conventional diffractive physics and the low-x physics from deep inelastic scattering will allow us also to review the instruments which could help to understand the developments we can expect from the future.

Abstract:The phenomena of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry b reaking are basic to understanding hadron observables. They can be explored usi ng Dyson-Schwinger equations. The existence of a systematic, nonperturbative and symmetry pr eserving truncation of these equations enables the proof of exact results in QCD, and their illustra tion using simple but accurate models. We provide a sketch of the material qualitative and quantita tive success that has been achieved in the study of pseudoscalar and vector mesons. Efforts are now turning to the study of baryons, which we exemplify via a calculation of nucleon weak and pionic for m factors.

Abstract:This review describes the development of the physics of hadronic cross sections up to recent LHC results and cosmic ray experiments. We present here a comprehensive review - written with a historical perspective - about total cross-sections from medium to the highest energies explored experimentally and studied through a variety of methods and theoretical models for over sixty years. We begin by recalling the analytic properties of the elastic amplitude and the theorems about the asymptotic behavior of the total cross-section. A discussion of how proton-proton cross-sections are extracted from cosmic rays at higher than accelerator energies and help the study of these asymptotic limits, is presented. This is followed by a description of the advent of particle colliders, through which high energies and unmatched experimental precisions have been attained. Thus the measured hadronic elastic and total cross-sections have become crucial instruments to probe the so called soft part of QCD physics, where quarks and gluons are confined, and have led to test and refine Regge behavior and a number of diffractive models. As the c.m. energy increases, the total cross-section also probes the transition into hard scattering describable with perturbative QCD, the so-called mini-jet region. Further tests are provided by cross-section measurements of gamma p, gamma*p and gamma* gamma* for models based on vector meson dominance, scaling limits of virtual photons at high Q^2 and the BFKL formalism. Models interpolating from virtual to real photons are also tested.

Abstract:Ultra-peripheral collisions are the energy frontier for photon-mediated interactions, reaching, at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), γ−p center of mass energies five to ten times higher than at HERA and reaching γγ energies higher than at LEP. Photoproduction of heavy quarkonium and dijets in pp and pA collisions probes the gluon distribution in protons at Bjorken-x values down to 3×10−6, far smaller than can be otherwise studied. In AA collisions, these reactions probe the gluon distributions in heavy ions, down to x values of a few 10−5. Although more theoretical work is needed to nail down all of the uncertainties, inclusion of these data in current parton distribution function fits would greatly improve the accuracy of the gluon distributions at low Bjorken-x and low/moderate Q2. High-statistics ρ0 data probe the spatial distribution of the interaction sites; the site distribution is given by the Fourier transform of dσ/dt. After introducing UPCs, this review presents recent measurements of dilepton production and light-by-light scattering and recent data on proton and heavy nuclei structure, emphasizing results presented at Quark Matter 2017 (QM2017).

Abstract:Single-spin asymmetries for pions and charged kaons are measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of positrons and electrons off a transversely nuclear-polarized hydrogen target. The dependence of the cross section on the azimuthal angles of the target polarization (phi_S)and the produced hadron (phi) is found to have a substantial sin(phi+phi_S) modulation for the production of pi+, pi- and K+. This Fourier component can be interpreted in terms of non-zero transversity distribution functions and non-zero favored and disfavored Collins fragmentation functions with opposite sign. For pi0 and K- production the amplitude of this Fourier component is consistent with zero.

Abstract:This review focuses on diffractive physics, which involves the long-range interactions of strong nuclear force at high energies described by SU(3) gauge symmetry. It is expected that diffractive processes account for nearly 40% of the total cross-section at LHC energies. These processes consist of soft-scale physics where perturbation theory cannot be applied. Although highly successful and often described as a perfect theory, quantum chromodynamics relies heavily on perturbation theory, a model best suited for hard-scale physics. The study of pomerons could help bridge the soft and hard processes and provide a complete description of the theory of the strong interaction across the full momentum spectrum. Here, we will discuss some of the features of diffractive physics, experimental results from SPS, HERA, and the LHC, and where the field could potentially lead. With the recent publication of the odderon discovery in 2021 by the D0 and TOTEM collaborations and the new horizon of physics that lies ahead with the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory, interest is seemingly piquing in high energy diffractive physics.

Small-x structure of oxygen and neon isotopes as seen by the Large Hadron Collider

Abstract:Results on collisions of $^{16}$O nuclei performed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have been presented for the first time at Quark Matter 2023 by the STAR collaboration. $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O collisions are also expected to take place in the near future at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at much higher beam energies. We explore the potential of beam-energy-dependent studies for this system to probe small-$x$ dynamics and QCD evolution. We perform 3+1D IP-Glasma simulations to predict the rapidity dependence of the initial geometry of light-ion collisions, focusing on $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne+$^{20}$Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 70$ GeV and 7 TeV. The choice of $^{20}$Ne is motivated by its strongly elongated geometry, which may respond differently to the effect of the high-energy evolution compared to the more spherical $^{16}$O. We find that smearing induced by soft gluon production at high energy causes mild variations in the initial-state eccentricities as a function of the collision energy. These effects could be resolved in future experiments and deserve further investigation.
