Abstract:By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each component of the filledin Julia set containing critical points is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

Abstract:In 2022, Broudy and Lovejoy extensively studied the function $S(n)$ which counts the number of overpartitions of \emph{Schur-type}. In particular, they proved a number of congruences satisfied by $S(n)$ modulo $2$, $4$, and $5$. In this work, we extend their list of arithmetic properties satisfied by $S(n)$ by focusing on moduli which are small powers of 2. In particular, we prove the following infinite family of Ramanujan-like congruences: For all $\alpha\geq 0$ and $n\geq 0$, $$ S\left(2^{5+2\alpha}n+\left(2^{5+2\alpha}-\frac{2^{2+2\alpha}-1}{3}\right)\right)\equiv 0 \pmod{16}. $$ All of the proof techniques used herein are elementary, relying on classical $q$-series identities and generating function manipulations as well as the parameterization work popularized by Alaca, Alaca, and Williams.

Abstract:We provide an elementary proof of the dual representation of Expected Shortfall on the space of integrable random variables over a general probability space. Unlike the results in the extant literature, our proof only exploits basic properties of quantile functions and can thus be easily implemented in any graduate course on risk measures. As a byproduct, we obtain a new proof of the subadditivity of Expected Shortfall.

Abstract:The current ordinal analysis provides the proof-theoretic ordinal of a theory, which calibrates the robustness of the $\Pi^1_1$-consequences of the theory. We can ask whether there is an ordinal characteristic capturing more complex consequences, and it turns out that we can define the $\Sigma^1_2$-proof-theoretic ordinal capturing the robustness of the $\Sigma^1_2$-consequences of a theory. In this paper, we study the behavior of $\Sigma^1_2$-proof-theoretic ordinal, and it turns out that $\Sigma^1_2$-proof-theoretic ordinal also follows an analogue of Walsh's characterization of proof-theoretic ordinal.

Abstract:In a recent article on overpartitions, Merca considered the auxiliary function $a(n)$ which counts the number of partitions of $n$ where odd parts are repeated at most twice (and there are no restrictions on the even parts). In the course of his work, Merca proved the following: For all $n\geq 0$, \begin{align*} a(4n+2) &\equiv 0 \pmod{2}, \textrm{\ \ and} \\ a(4n+3) &\equiv 0 \pmod{2}. \end{align*} Merca then indicates that a classical proof of these congruences would be very interesting. The goal of this short note is to fulfill Merca's request by providing two truly elementary (classical) proofs of these congruences.

Abstract:It is a classic result of Selberg in the 1950's that $\theta_2 = 2/3$, where $\theta_2$ is the level of distribution of the divisor function in arithmetic progressions (defined more precisely below). Selberg applies this estimate, together with his $\Lambda^2$ sieve, to prove weak forms of the binary Goldbach and twin prime conjectures. In this note, we give an unconditional proof of Selberg's first result with smooth weights for prime moduli, and put forth a hypothesis via subconvexity to bootstrap to level $4/5$. Contingent outcomes of our proposal is an improvement of Selberg's second result on approximations to twin primes and in lowering bounds on gaps between primes.

Toward resolving Kang and Park's generalization of the Alder-Andrews Theorem

Abstract:The Alder-Andrews Theorem, a partition inequality generalizing Euler's partition identity, the first Rogers-Ramanujan identity, and a theorem of Schur to $d$-distinct partitions of $n$, was proved successively by Andrews in 1971, Yee in 2008, and Alfes, Jameson, and Lemke Oliver in 2010. While Andrews and Yee utilized $q$-series and combinatorial methods, Alfes et al. proved the finite number of remaining cases using asymptotics originating with Meinardus together with high-performance computing. In 2020, Kang and Park conjectured a "level $2$" Alder-Andrews type partition inequality which relates to the second Rogers-Ramanujan identity. Duncan, Khunger, the second author, and Tamura proved Kang and Park's conjecture for all but finitely many cases using a combinatorial shift identity. Here, we generalize the methods of Alfes et al. to resolve nearly all of the remaining cases of Kang and Park's conjecture.

Abstract:This is an overview of a formalisation project in the proof assistant Isabelle/HOL of a number of research results in infinitary combinatorics and set theory (more specifically in ordinal partition relations) by Erdős--Milner, Specker, Larson and Nash-Williams, leading to Larson's proof of the unpublished result by E.C. Milner asserting that for all $m \in \mathbb{N}$, $\omega^\omega\arrows(\omega^\omega, m)$. This material has been recently formalised by Paulson and is available on the Archive of Formal Proofs; here we discuss some of the most challenging aspects of the formalisation process. This project is also a demonstration of working with Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory in higher-order logic.

Abstract:Abstract Let denote the number of ‐dimensional partitions with entries from . Building upon the works of Balogh–Treglown–Wagner and Noel–Scott–Sudakov, we show that when , holds for all . This makes progress toward a conjecture of Moshkovitz–Shapira [ Adv. in Math . 262 (2014), 1107–1129]. Via the main result of Moshkovitz and Shapira, our estimate also determines asymptotically a Ramsey‐theoretic parameter related to Erdős–Szekeres‐type functions, thus solving a problem of Fox, Pach, Sudakov, and Suk [ Proc. Lond. Math. Soc . 105 (2012), 953–982]. Our main result is a new supersaturation theorem for antichains in , which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this article, we studied the inverse Erdős-Heilbronn problem with the restricted sumset from two components $A$ and $B$ that are not necessarily the same. We give a completely elementary proof for the problem in $\mathbb{Z}$ and some partial results that contributes to the elementary proof of the problem in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, avoiding the usage of the powerful polynomial method and the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.

Abstract:Motivated by spin modular representations of the symmetric groups, we propose two generalizations of the Schur regular partitions for an odd integer $p\geq 3$. One forms a subset of the set of $p$-strict partitions, and the other forms that of strict partitions. We prove that each set has a basic $A^{(2)}_{p-1}$-crystal structure. For $p=3$, it reproves Schur's 1926 partition theorem, a mod 6 analog of Rogers-Ramanujan partition theorem (RRPT). For $p=5$, it gives a computer-free proof of a conjecture by Andrews during his 3-parameter generalization of RRPT, which was first proved by Andrews-Bessenrodt-Olsson.

Abstract:In a recent paper (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.09744" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.09744">arXiv:2301.09744</a>), Erickson and Hunziker consider partitions in which the arm-leg difference is an arbitrary constant $m$. In previous works, these partitions are called $(-m)$-asymmetric partitions. Regarding these partitions and their conjugates as the highest weights, they prove an identity yielding an infinite family of dimension equalities between $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and $\mathfrak{gl}_{n+m}$ modules. Their proof proceeds by the manipulations of the hook content formula. We give a simple bijective proof of their result.

Abstract:We show that a modular unit on two copies of the upper half-plane is a Borcherds product if and only if its boundary divisor is a special boundary divisor. Therefore, we define a subspace of the space of invariant vectors for the Weil representation which maps surjectively onto the space of modular units that are Borcherds products. Moreover, we show that every boundary divisor of a Borcherds product can be obtained in this way. As a byproduct we obtain new identities of eta products.

Abstract:In this paper we give an ordinal analysis of the theory of second order arithmetic. We do this by working with proof trees -- that is, "deductions" which may not be well-founded. Working in a suitable theory, we are able to represent functions on proof trees as yet further proof trees satisfying a suitable analog of well-foundedness. Iterating this process allows us to represent higher order functions as well: since functions on proof trees are just proof trees themselves, these functions can easily be extended to act on proof trees which are themselves understood as functions. The corresponding system of ordinals parallels this, using higher order collapsing function.
