Abstract:The dynamical properties of the optical solitons in two types of matrix nonlinear Schrödin-ger (NLS) equation are studied by Riemann–Hilbert method. Firstly, the inverse scattering transform of the matrix NLS equation is investigated and the corresponding Riemann–Hilbert problem is established. Then, by solving the Riemann–Hilbert problem of discrete spectrum, the N -soliton solutions of the matrix NLS equations are obtained. Finally, the single-soliton solution, two-soliton solution and three-soliton solution of the matrix NLS equations are attained. It is proved that the two-soliton solution is decomposed into two single-soliton solutions when the time approaches infinity and the multiple solitons will overlap and form a bound state advancing at the same velocity when they have the same velocity.

Soliton stability criterion for generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Abstract:A stability criterion for solitons of the driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) has been conjectured. The criterion states that p'(v)<0 is a sufficient condition for instability, while p'(v)>0 is a necessary condition for stability; here, v is the soliton velocity and p=P/N, where P and N are the soliton momentum and norm, respectively. To date, the curve p(v) was calculated approximately by a collective coordinate theory, and the criterion was confirmed by simulations. The goal of this paper is to calculate p(v) exactly for several classes and cases of the generalized NLSE: a soliton moving in a real potential, in particular a time-dependent ramp potential, and a time-dependent confining quadratic potential, where the nonlinearity in the NLSE also has a time-dependent coefficient. Moreover, we investigate a logarithmic and a cubic NLSE with a time-independent quadratic potential well. In the latter case, there is a bisoliton solution that consists of two solitons with asymmetric shapes, forming a bound state in which the shapes and the separation distance oscillate. Finally, we consider a cubic NLSE with parametric driving. In all cases, the p(v) curve is calculated either analytically or numerically, and the stability criterion is confirmed.

Abstract:We demonstrate interesting dynamics of soliton pairs and clusters in the (2 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity and linear potentials. We display regular oscillation and rotation of such multidimensional solitary structures in our model, achieved by the proper choice of simple potentials. By utilizing linear stability analysis, we establish that these soliton pairs and clusters are completely robust, and the solitons do not experience any distortion during the perturbed propagation, even when the potentials evolve along the propagation direction. Note also that both the oscillating and rotating periods of soliton pairs and clusters can be easily controlled by the parameters of external potentials.

Abstract:We prove the existence of multi-soliton solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with repulsive Dirac delta potential and $L^2$-supercritical focusing nonlinear term. Our main contribution is to treat the unmoving part of the multi-solitons, which is the ground state of the equation. The linearized operator around it has two unstable eigenvalues. This is the main difference from NLS without potential, whose existence of multi-solitons is investigated by Côte, Martel, and Merle (2011).

Abstract:We investigate the long time dynamics of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with combined powers on the waveguide manifold $\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{T}$. Different from the previously studied NLS-models with single power on the waveguide manifolds, where the non-scale-invariance is mainly due to the mixed nature of the underlying domain, the non-scale-invariance of the present model is both geometrical and structural. By considering different combinations of the nonlinearities, we establish both qualitative and quantitative properties of the soliton, scattering and blow-up solutions. As one of the main novelties of the paper compared to the previous results for the NLS with single power, we particularly construct two different rescaled families of variational problems, which leads to an NLS with single power in different limiting profiles respectively, to establish the periodic dependence results.

Abstract:We study a random configuration of $N$ soliton solutions $\psi_N(x,t;\boldsymbol{\lambda})$ of the cubic focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger (fNLS) equation in one space dimension. The $N$ soliton solutions are parametrized by a $N$-dimension complex vector $\boldsymbol{\lambda}$ whose entries are the eigenvalues of the Zakharov-Shabat linear spectral problem and by $N$ nonzero complex norming constants. The randomness is obtained by choosing the complex eigenvalues i.i.d. random variables sampled from a probability distribution with compact support on the complex plane. The corresponding norming constants are interpolated by a smooth function of the eigenvalues. Then we consider the Zakharov-Shabat linear problem for the expectation of the random measure associated to the spectral data. We denote the corresponding solution of the fNLS equation by $\psi_\infty(x,t)$. This solution can be interpreted as a soliton gas solution. We prove a Law of Large Numbers and a Central Limit Theorem for the differences $\psi_N(x,t;\boldsymbol{\lambda})-\psi_\infty(x,t)$ and $|\psi_N(x,t;\boldsymbol{\lambda})|^2-|\psi_\infty(x,t)|^2$ when $(x,t)$ are in a compact set of $\mathbb R \times \mathbb R^+$; we additionally compute the correlation functions.

Abstract:The general N-solitons of nonlocal generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations with third-order, fourth-order and fifth-order dispersion terms and nonlinear terms (NGNLS) are studied. Firstly, the Riemann–Hilbert problem and the general N-soliton solutions of NGNLS equations were given. Then, we study the symmetry relations of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors related to the scattering data which involve the reverse-space, reverse-time and reverse-space-time reductions. Thirdly, some novel solitons and the dynamic behaviors which corresponded to novel eigenvalue configurations and the coefficients of higher-order terms are given. In all the three NGNLS equations, their solutions often collapse periodically, but can remain bounded or nonsingular for wide ranges of soliton parameters as well. In addition, it is found that the higher-order terms of the NGNLS equations not only affect the amplitude variation of the soliton, but also influence the singularity and the motion of the soliton.

Transmission of fast solitons for the NLS with an external potential

Abstract:We consider the dynamics of a boosted soliton evolving under the cubic NLS with an external potential. We show that for sufficiently large velocities, the soliton is effectively transmitted through the potential. This result extends work of Holmer, Marzuola, and Zworski, who considered the case of a delta potential with no bound states, and work of Datchev and Holmer, who considered the case of a delta potential with a linear bound state.

Abstract:We consider the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with focusing, power nonlinearity, and a repulsive delta potential. We show that if the potential is not too strong, the construction by Nguy\~{ê}n (2019) of solutions converging strongly at time infinity to a pair of logarithmically separating solitons can be adapted to accommodate the effect of the potential. On the other hand, we show that if the potential is stronger, no such solutions exist.

Abstract:In this paper, a (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with variable coefficients is studied. Base on the symmetry of the equation, we rotate the original coordinate for 45 degrees to get a simple one in the new coordinate. This method is quite easy to compare with solving it directly, and it is never been used before. By the Hirota method with an auxiliary function, the soliton solutions are derived. We revealed the structures between soliton interaction and discussed the interaction properties: Influences of the coefficients and wave numbers on interaction shapes of solitons are presented, i.e. parabolic, cubic, quasi-periodical, and polyline solitons are presented; Solitonic amplitudes are inversely proportional to the wave numbers. Besides, if the coefficients small enough, two-soliton solutions are degenerate into two parallel solitons; Soliton solutions do not only depend on the wave numbers, but also affected by the coefficients; To demonstrate those soliton solutions, we propose different methods to control those parameters, we also discuss a new form and draw some good conclusions. In the end, bound-state solitons are obtained.

Long-time dynamics of small solutions to 1$d$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a trapping potential

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the long-time dynamics of small solutions to the $1d$ cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a trapping potential. We show that every small solution will decompose into a small solitary wave and a radiation term which exhibits the modified scattering. In particular, this result implies the asymptotic stability of small solitary waves. Our analysis also establishes the long-time behavior of solutions to a perturbation of the integrable cubic NLS with the appearance of solitons.

Abstract:We study nonlocal bright solitons subject to external spatially nonuniform potentials. If the potential is slowly varying on the soliton scale, we derive analytical soliton solutions behaving like Newtonian particles. If the potential has the form of an attractive delta-like point defect, we identify different dynamical regimes, defined by the relative strength of the nonlocality and the point defect. In these regimes, the soliton can be trapped at the defect's location, via a nonlinear resonance with a defect mode -- which is found analytically -- reflected by or transmitted through the defect, featuring a wave behavior. Our analytical predictions are corroborated by results of direct numerical simulations.

Abstract:We consider perturbations of the one-dimensional cubic Schrödinger equation, of the form $i \, \partial_t \psi + \partial_x^2 \psi + |\psi|^2 \psi + g( |\psi|^2 ) \psi = 0$. Under hypotheses on the function $g$ that can be easily verified in some cases (such as $g(s) = s^\sigma$ with $\sigma >1$), we show that the linearized problem around a small solitary wave presents a unique internal mode. Moreover, under an additional hypothesis (the Fermi golden rule) that can also be verified in the case of powers $g(s) = s^\sigma$, we prove the asymptotic stability of the solitary waves with small frequencies.

A comprehensive study on zero-background solitons of the sharp-line Maxwell-Bloch equations

Abstract:This work is devoted to systematically study general $N$-soliton solutions possibly containing multiple degenerate soliton groups (DSGs), in the context of the sharp-line Maxwell-Bloch equations with a zero background. A DSG is a localized coherent nonlinear traveling-wave structure, comprised of inseparable solitons with identical velocities. Hence, DSGs are generalizations of single solitons (considered as $1$-DSGs), and form fundamental building blocks of solutions of many integrable systems. We provide an explicit formula for an $N$-DSG and its center from an appropriate Riemann-Hilbert problem. With the help of the Deift-Zhou's nonlinear steepest descent method, we rigorously prove the localization of DSGs, and calculate the long-time asymptotics for an arbitrary $N$-soliton solutions. We show that the solution becomes a linear combination of multiple DSGs with different sizes in the distant past and future. The asymptotic phase shift for each DSG is obtained in the process as well. Other generalizations of a single soliton are also carefully discussed, such as $N$th-order solitons and soliton gases. We prove that every $N$th-order soliton can be obtained by fusion of eigenvalues of $N$-soliton solutions, with proper rescalings of norming constants, and every soliton-gas solution can be considered as limits of $N$-soliton solutions as $N\to+\infty$. Consequently, certain properties of $N$th-order solitons and soliton gases are obtain as well. With the approach presented in this work, we show that results can be readily migrated to other integrable systems, with the same non-self-adjoint Zakharov-Shabat scattering problem or alike. Results for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation and complex modified Korteweg-De Vries equation are obtained as explicit examples for demonstrative purposes.

Abstract:We consider the Schrödinger equation with a general interaction term, which is localized in space, for radially symmetric initial data in $n$ dimensions, $n\geq5$. The interaction term may be space-time dependent and nonlinear. Assuming that the solution is bounded in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$ uniformly in time, we prove soliton resolution conjecture (Asymptotic completeness) by demonstrating that the solution resolves into a smooth and localized part and a free radiation in $\mathcal{L}^2_x(\mathbb{R}^n)$ norm. Examples of such equations include inter-critical and super-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations, saturated nonlinearities, time-dependent potentials, and combinations of these terms.

Abstract:We investigate the effects on solitons dynamics of introducing a PT-symmetric complex potential in a specific family of the cubic Dirac equation in (1+1)-dimensions, called the ABS model. The potential is introduced taking advantage of the fact that the nonlinear Dirac equation admits a Lagrangian formalism. As a consequence, the imaginary part of the potential, associated with gains and losses, behaves as a spatially periodic damping (changing from positive to negative, and back) that acts at the same time on the two spinor components. A collective coordinates theory is developed by making an ansatz for a moving soliton where the position, rapidity, momentum, frequency, and phase are all functions of time. We consider the complex potential as a perturbation and verify that numerical solutions of the equation of motions for the collective coordinate are in agreement with simulations of the nonlinear Dirac equation. The main effect of the imaginary part of the potencial is to induce oscillations in the charge and energy (they are conserved for real potentials) with the same frequency and phase as the momentum. We find long-lived solitons even with very large charge and energy oscillations. Additionally, we extend to the nonlinear Dirac equation an empirical stability criterion, previously employed successfully in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:By imposing a nonlocal reverse-time type constraint on a general coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, we propose a novel nonlocal reverse-time NLS equation which involves a free real parameter and a free complex parameter. The introduced nonlocal NLS equation is integrable since it admits a 3×3$$3\times 3$$ matrix Lax pair formulation. By solving the proposed nonlocal NLS equation, one can obtain the soliton solutions of the general coupled NLS equation with special initial conditions. By extending the Riemann–Hilbert (RH) approach to the proposed nonlocal NLS equation, we further explore and reveal its spectral structure in detail which is different from that of the general coupled NLS equation, from which three types of soliton solutions are rigorously obtained. In addition, the soliton analysis is performed to reveal the soliton dynamical behaviors underlying the soliton solutions.

Dynamics of the black soliton in a regularized nonlinear Schrodinger equation

Abstract:We consider a family of regularized defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations proposed in the context of the cubic NLS equation with a bounded dispersion relation. The time evolution is well-posed if the black soliton is perturbed by a small perturbation in the Sobolev space $H^s(\R)$ with s > 1/2. We prove that the black soliton is spectrally stable (unstable) if the regularization parameter is below (above) some explicitly specified threshold. We illustrate the stable and unstable dynamics of the perturbed black solitons by using the numerical finite-difference method. The question of orbital stability of the black soliton is left open due to the mismatch of the function spaces for the energy and momentum conservation.
