Abstract:This document presents an elementary approach using $\varepsilon$-Poincaré inequality to prove generation of $L^{p}$-bounds, $p\in(1,\infty)$, for the homogeneous Landau equation with moderate soft potentials $\gamma\in[-2,0)$. The critical case $\gamma=-2$ uses an interpolation approach in the realm of Lorentz spaces and entropy. Alternatively, a direct approach using the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS) inequality and entropy is also presented. On this basis, the generation of pointwise bounds $p=\infty$ is deduced from a De Giorgi argument.

Abstract:Landau parameters determined from phenomenological finite-range interactions are used to get an estimation of N$^3$LO pseudopotentials parameters. The parameter sets obtained in this way are shown to lead to consistent results concerning saturation properties. The uniqueness of this procedure is discussed, and an estimate of the error induced by the truncation at N$^3$LO is given.

Abstract:We provide a tight-binding model parametrization for black phosphorus (BP) with an arbitrary number of layers. The model is derived from partially self-consistent GW(0) approach, where the screened Coulomb interaction W-0 is calculated within the random phase approximation on the basis of density functional theory. We thoroughly validate the model by performing a series of benchmark calculations, and determine the limits of its applicability. The application of the model to the calculations of electronic and optical properties of multilayer BP demonstrates good quantitative agreement with ab initio results in a wide energy range. We also show that the proposed model can be easily extended for the case of external fields, yielding the results consistent with those obtained from first principles. The model is expected to be suitable for a variety of realistic problems related to the electronic properties of multilayer BP including different kinds of disorder, external fields, and many-body effects.

Abstract:We derive the spatially homogeneous Landau equation for Maxwellian molecules from a natural stochastic interacting particle system. More precisely, we control the relative entropy between the joint law of the particle system and the tensorized law of the Landau equation. To obtain this, we establish as key tools the pointwise logarithmic gradient and Hessian estimates of the density function and also a new Law of Large Numbers result for the particle system. The logarithmic estimates are derived via the Bernstein method and the parabolic maximum principle, while the Law of Large Numbers result comes from crucial observations on the control of moments at the particle level.

Abstract:The Bethe approximation, discovered in statistical physics, gives an efficient algorithm called belief propagation (BP) for approximating a partition function. BP empirically gives an accurate approximation for many problems, e.g., low-density parity-check codes, compressed sensing, etc. Recently, Vontobel gives a novel characterization of the Bethe approximation using graph cover. In this paper, a new approximation based on the Bethe approximation is proposed. The new approximation is derived from Vontobel's characterization using graph cover, and expressed by using the edge zeta function, which is related with the Hessian of the Bethe free energy as shown by Watanabe and Fukumizu. On some conditions, it is proved that the new approximation is asymptotically better than the Bethe approximation.

Abstract:This work deals with the Landau equation in a bounded domain with the Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary for any (possibly smoothly position dependent) accommodation coefficient and for the full range of interaction potentials, including the Coulomb case. We establish the global existence and a constructive asymptotic decay of solutions in a close-to-equilibrium regime. This is the first existence result for a Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary and that generalizes the similar results established for the Landau equation for other geometries in \cite{GuoLandau1,GS1,GS2,MR3625186,MR4076068}. We also answer to Villani's program \cite{MR2116276,MR2407976} about constructive accurate rate of convergence to the equilibrium {(quantitative H-Theorem)} for solutions to collisional kinetic equations satisfying a priori uniform bounds. The proofs rely on the study of a suitably linear problem for which we prove that the associated operator is hypocoercive, the associated semigroup is ultracontractive, and finally that it is asymptotically stable in many weighted $L^\infty$ spaces.

Abstract:The generalized Bethe-ansatz method of thermodynamic analysis of integrable systems was employed to compute the free energy of a classical integrable model, i.e., the Landau-Lifshitz model. Using the action-angle variables of the model and by imposing a periodic boundary condition, we derive a phase-shifted density of states for the excitations of the system. The free energy, in the thermodynamic limit, can be expressed analytic in terms of two coupled nonlinear integral equations of the finite temperature excited energy for effective phonons and kinks (antikinks). We solve these equations iteratively for a special case that the model is in the limit of anisotropic strong yz coupling.

Abstract:By using the iterative method in functional analysis, the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation, which describes the distribution of the potential in the electrical double layer of a cylindrical particle, has been solved analytically under general potential conditions. Both the potential and the surface charge density coincide with those results obtained from the Debye-Huchel approximation when the very low potential of ze psi << kT is introduced. The advantage of this method is that it has completely overcome the restriction that the BP equation can be solved analytically only under the Debye-Huchel approximation condition.

Abstract:Based on the Hermite expansion of the distribution function, we introduce a Galerkin spectral method for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with the realistic inverse-power-law models. A practical algorithm is proposed to evaluate the coefficients in the spectral method with high accuracy, and these coefficients are also used to construct new computationally affordable collision models. Numerical experiments show that our method captures the low-order moments very efficiently.

Abstract:We present two different approaches towards the Landau-Zener problem: (i) The Markov approximation in the integro-differential equation for one of the two probability amplitudes, and (ii) an amplitude-and-phase analysis of the linear second order differential equation for same probability amplitude. Our treatment shows that the Markov approximation neglects the non-linearity of the equation but still provides us with the exact asymptotic result.

Abstract:This paper uses the Modified Projection Method to examine the errors in solving the boundary integral equation from Laplace equation. The analysis uses weighted norms, and parallel algorithms help solve the independent linear systems. By applying the method developed by Kulkarni, the study shows how the approximate solution behaves in polygonal domains. It also explores computational techniques using the double layer potential kernel to solve Laplace equation in these domains. The iterated Galerkin method provides an approximation of order 2r+2 in smooth domains. However, the corners in polygonal domains cause singularities that reduce the accuracy. Adjusting the mesh near these corners can almost restore accuracy when the error is measured using the uniform norm. This paper builds on the work of Rude et al. By using modified operator suggested by Kulkarni, superconvergence in iterated solutions is observed. This leads to an asymptotic error expansion, with the leading term being $O(h^4)$ and the remaining error term $O(h^6)$, resulting in a method with similar accuracy.

Abstract:When applying Hamiltonian operator splitting methods for the time integration of multi-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau systems, the reliable and efficient numerical approximation of the Landau equation represents a fundamental component of the entire algorithm. Substantial computational issues arise from the treatment of the physically most relevant three-dimensional case with Coulomb interaction. This work is concerned with the introduction and numerical comparison of novel approaches for the evaluation of the Landau collision operator. In the spirit of collocation, common tools are the identification of fundamental integrals, series expansions of the integral kernel and the density function on the main part of the velocity domain, and interpolation as well as quadrature approximation nearby the singularity of the kernel. Focusing on the favourable choice of the Fourier spectral method, their practical implementation uses the reduction to basic integrals, fast Fourier techniques, and summations along certain directions. Moreover, an important observation is that a significant percentage of the overall computational effort can be transferred to precomputations which are independent of the density function. For the purpose of exposition and numerical validation, the cases of constant, regular, and singular integral kernels are distinguished, and the procedure is adapted accordingly to the increasing complexity of the problem. With regard to the time integration of the Landau equation, the most expedient approach is applied in such a manner that the conservation of mass is ensured.

Abstract:The Poisson–Boltzmann (P–B) equation is of fundamental importance in understanding solid–liquid electrolyte interfaces that are present in many fields. Due to the nonlinearity, it is usually challenging to find the explicit exact solutions of the P–B equation. The present work reports several perturbation solutions for the nonlinear P–B equation in the Cartesian and spherical coordinates. The new solutions contain a perturbation parameter from the high-order-accuracy approximation of the hyperbolic sine function and thus can apply to high zeta potential conditions. The comparison of the perturbation solutions with the traditional Debye–Hückel solutions and the full numerical solutions validates the robustness and accuracy of the perturbation solutions. The perturbation solutions are explicit and analytical and then can be used for a fast calculation of the EDL potential and interaction energy in versatile applications.

Abstract:A new (algebraic) approximation scheme to find {\sl global} solutions of two point boundary value problems of ordinary differential equations (ODE's) is presented. The method is applicable for both linear and nonlinear (coupled) ODE's whose solutions are analytic near one of the boundary points. It is based on replacing the original ODE's by a sequence of auxiliary first order polynomial ODE's with constant coefficients. The coefficients in the auxiliary ODE's are uniquely determined from the local behaviour of the solution in the neighbourhood of one of the boundary points. To obtain the parameters of the global (connecting) solutions analytic at one of the boundary points, reduces to find the appropriate zeros of algebraic equations. The power of the method is illustrated by computing the approximate values of the ``connecting parameters'' for a number of nonlinear ODE's arising in various problems in field theory. We treat in particular the static and rotationally symmetric global vortex, the skyrmion, the Nielsen-Olesen vortex, as well as the 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopole. The total energy of the skyrmion and of the monopole is also computed by the new method. We also consider some ODE's coming from the exact renormalization group. The ground state energy level of the anharmonic oscillator is also computed for arbitrary coupling strengths with good precision.

Abstract:The phenomenological Landau–Lifshitz equation (LL) suggested by Landau and Lifshitz in 1935 to describe the precessional motion of spins in ferromagnetic materials has shown its limitations when the temperature is close to or above the Curie temperature. This model has been replaced by the Landau–Lifshitz–Bloch model (LLB), which proves its efficiency in modelling magnetic phenomena at all temperature ranges. In this work, we propose an implicit finite element scheme for the latter model. We show that the proposed scheme converges to a weak solution of the (LLB) equation. In practice, a nonlinear system must be solved at each step of time. So, we use a fixed point method to solve this system. Finally, some numerical experiments have been given to show the performance of our approach.

Abstract:We study the pointwise (in the space and time variables) behavior of the linearized Landau equation for hard and moderately soft potentials. The solution has very clear description in the (x,t)-variables, including large time behavior and asymptotic behavior. More precisely, we obtain the pointwise fluid structure inside finite Mach number region, and exponential or sub-exponential decay, depending on interactions between particles, in the space variable outside finite Mach number region. The spectrum analysis, regularization effect and refined weighted energy estimate play important roles in this paper.

Abstract:Recently it was discovered that altering the shape of the meta stable and unstable branches of an equation of state (EOS) can greatly improve the numerical accuracy of liquid and gas densities in the pseudopotential method. Inspired by this approach we develop an improved approach that is benchmarked for both equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations. We show here that the original approach reduces the method stability in non-equilibrium situations. Here we propose a new procedure to replace the metastable and unstable regions of these EOS by alternative functions. Our approach does not affects the coexistence densities or the speed of sound of the liquid phase while maintaining continuity of the sound speed in the pressure-density curve. Using this approach we were able to reduce the relative error of the planar interface vapor density compared to the thermodynamic consistent value by increasing the vapor phase sound speed. To allow for the benchmarking of dynamic results we also developed a finite difference method (FD) that solves the same macroscopic conservation equation as the pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). With this FD scheme we are able to perform mesh refinement and obtain reference solutions for the dynamic tests. We observed excellent agreement between the FD solutions and our proposed scheme. We also performed a detailed study of the stability of the methods using simulations of a droplet impacting on a liquid film for reduced temperatures down to 0.35 with Reynolds number of 300. Our approach remains stable for a density ratio up to $3.38\cdot10^{4}$.

Abstract:The Landau equation is a kinetic equation based on the weak coupling approximation of the interaction between the particles. In the framework of dry active matter this new kinetic equation relies on the weak coupling approximation of both the alignment strength and the magnitude of the angular noise, instead of the hypothesis of diluteness. Therefore, it is a kinetic equation bridging between the Boltzmann [3], and the Smoluchowski [2] approximations, and allowing analytical descriptions at moderate densities. The form of the equation presents non-linear and density dependent diffusions and advections fully derived by the microscopic equations of motions. Finally, implementing the BGL procedure [25], the parameters of the Toner-Tu equations are derived showing the appearance of linearly stable homogeneous ordered solutions and mimicking the results obtained from the Boltzmann approach.

A Simple approach for precision calculation of Bethe logarithm

Abstract:In this article we propose a simple approach for the precision calculation of Bethe logarithm. The leading contributions are obtained using specific operators, while the remaining terms are eliminated by adjusting the parameter $\lambda$. Through the use of dimensional regularization, singular divergences are algebraically canceled. Compared to the standard form of Bethe logarithm, our approach significantly reduces the complexity of constructing pseudostates in numerical evaluations. Using this approach we obtain a very highly precise result of Bethe logarithm for the ground state of the hydrogen, achieving 49 significant digits. And for multi-electron systems this approach appears simplicity and efficiency as well.
