Abstract:This paper studies the behavior under iteration of the maps T_{ab}(x,y) = (F_{ab}(x)- y, x) of the plane R^2, in which F_{ab}(x)= ax if x>0 and bx if x<0. These maps are area-preserving homeomorphisms of the plane that map rays from the origin into rays from the origin. Orbits of the map correspond to solutions of the nonlinear difference equation x_{n+2}= 1/2(a-b)|x_{n+1}| + 1/2(a+b)x_{n+1} - x_n. This difference equation can be written in an eigenvalue form for a nonlinear difference operator of Schrodinger type, in which \mu= 1/2(a-b) is viewed as fixed and the energy E=2- 1/2(a+b). The paper studies the set of parameter values where T_{ab} has at least one nonzero bounded orbit, which corresponds to an l_{\infty} eigenfunction of the difference operator. It shows that the for transcendental \mu the set of allowed energy values E for which there is a bounded orbit is a Cantor set. Numerical simulations suggest that this Cantor set have positive one-dimensional measure for all real values of \mu.

Abstract:By establishing a new proper variational framework and using the critical point theory, we establish some new existence criteria to guarantee that the 2nth-order nonlinear difference equation containing both advance and retardation with p-Laplacian Delta(n)(r(t - n) Phi p(Delta(n)u(t - 1))) + q(t)Phi p (u(t)) = f (t,u(t + n),.,u(t),.,u(t - n)), n is an element of Z, has infinitely many homoclinic orbits, where Phi p(s) is p-Laplacian operator; Phi p(s) = |s|(p-2)s(1 < p < infinity) r, q, f are nonperiodic in t. Our conditions on the potential are rather relaxed, and some existing results in the literature are improved.

Abstract:We study weighted transfer operators associated to a piecewise expanding map on a compact manifold, and a piecewise Holder weight, acting on Sobolev spaces. We bound the essential spectral radius in terms of a topological pressure for a subadditive potential. Under a new small boundary pressure condition, we improve the estimate by establishing a variational principle for piecewise expanding maps and subadditive potentials. Abstract:The preliminary material of the monograph (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1607.03852" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1607.03852">arXiv:1607.03852</a>) written by the first two authors contains two major imprecisions that necessitates a number of (in the end harmless) changes throughout the entire text. One is about identification of abstract and concrete Hardy spaces for perturbed Dirac operators, the other one about interpolation of quasi-Banach function spaces. Since these erroneous statements are not unlikely to spread, we provide a detailed corrigendum, including further background and corrected statements for all affected results. All other results remain unchanged.

On convergence of linear response formulae in some piecewise hyperbolic maps

Abstract:When high-dimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic chaotic systems undergo dynamical perturbations, their long-time statistics are generally observed to respond differentiably with respect to the perturbation. Although important in applications, this differentiability, which is thought to be connected to the dimensionality of the system, has remained resistant to rigorous study outside of the one-dimensional setting. To model non-uniformly hyperbolic systems in multiple dimensions, we consider a family of the mathematically tractable class of piecewise smooth hyperbolic maps, the Lozi maps. For these maps, we prove that the existence of a formal derivative of the response reduces to conditional mixing of the SRB measure on the singularity set. Heuristically, this suggests that Lozi maps, and piecewise uniformly expanding maps more generally, should have linear response.

Linear response for sequential and random intermittent maps

Abstract:This work establishes a linear response formula for sequential intermittent dynamical systems, consisting of Liverani-Saussol-Vaienti maps with varying parameters. As a consequence, we establish quenched (trajectory-wise) linear response for random compositions of these maps, complementing recent annealed (averaged) results in this setting. As an intermediate step, we show existence, uniqueness and statistical stability of the sequential equivariant densities for such non-uniformly expanding systems. Our arguments rely on the cone technique introduced by Baladi and Todd and further developed by Lepp{ä}nen.

Abstract:A classical article by Misiurewicz and Ziemian ( J. Lond. Math. Soc. 40 (2) (1989), 490–506) classifies the elements in Homeo $_{0}(\mathbf{T}^{2})$ by their rotation set $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ , according to wether $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ is a point, a segment or a set with nonempty interior. A recent classification of nonwandering elements in Homeo $_{0}(\mathbf{T}^{2})$ by Koropecki and Tal was given in ( Invent. Math. 196 (2014), 339–381), according to the intrinsic underlying ambient space where the dynamics takes place: planar, annular and strictly toral maps. We study the link between these two classifications, showing that, even abroad the nonwandering setting, annular maps are characterized by rotation sets which are rational segments . Also, we obtain information on the sublinear diffusion of orbits in the—not very well understood—case that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ has nonempty interior.

Abstract:We prove local central limit theorems for partial sums of the form \newline $\,S_n=\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}f_j\circ T_{j-1}\circ\cdots\circ T_1\circ T_0$ where $f_j$ are uniformly Hölder functions and $T_j$ are expanding maps. Using a symbolic representation a similar result follows for maps $T_j$ in a small $C^1$ neighborhood of an Axiom A map and Hölder continuous functions $f_j$. All of our results are already new when all maps are the same $T_j=T$ but observables $(f_j)$ are different. The current paper compliments [43] where Berry--Esseen theorems are obtained. An important step in the proof is developing an appropriate reduction theory in the sequential case.

Abstract:We show an abstract critical point theorem about existence of infinitely many critical orbits to strongly indefinite functionals with sign-changing nonlinear part defined on a dislocation space with a discrete group action. We apply the abstract result to a Schrödinger equation $$ -\Delta u + V(x) u = f(u) - \lambda g(u) $$ with $0$ in the spectral gap of the Schrödinger operator $-\Delta + V(x)$, that appears in nonlinear optics, as well as to the equations with singular potentials arising from the study of cylindrically symmetric, electromagnetic waves to the system of Maxwell equations.
