Abstract:Closed form solutions for the computation of the solid angle from polygonal cross-sections are well known, however similar formulae for computation of projected solid angle are not generally available. Formulae for computing the projected solid angle from arbitrarily shaped polygons are derived using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. This is accomplished by transforming the projected solid angle integral to an integral over a spherical patch, which is then reduced by Gauss-Bonnet to a simple summation over its edges, allowing the projected solid angle to be computed exactly. Application of the formulae allows exact calculation of projected solid angle over discrete intervals which may be used for computing radiative flux to surfaces or view factors to free space.
Designing Two Freeform Surfaces with Monge–Ampère Equation Method for Point-Like Sources

Abstract:Two freeform surfaces provide more degrees of freedom in designing illumination optics and can yield a better solution. The existing methods for point-like sources are mostly valid in designing one freeform surface. Designing two freeform surfaces for point-like sources still remains a challenging issue. In this letter we develop a general formulation of designing two freeform lens surfaces for point-like sources. The proposed method is very robust in designing freeform lenses with two elaborately designed surfaces. The examples clearly show that using two freeform surfaces yields better solutions to challenging illumination problems with ultra-high energy efficiency.

Abstract:A new method to calculate the electric field inside a spherical shell with surface charge in terms of solid angle is presented. The integral can be readily carried out without invoking special functions typically used for this classical problem. For a flat surface of uniform charge density, the electric field normal to the surface is shown to be proportional to the solid angle subtended by the surface only.

Polyakov formulas for conical singularities in two dimensions

Abstract:We investigate the zeta-regularized determinant and its variation in the presence of conical singularities, boundaries, and corners. For surfaces with isolated conical singularities which may also have one or more smooth boundary components, we demonstrate both a variational Polyakov formula as well as an integrated Polyakov formula for the conformal variation of the Riemannian metric with conformal factors which are smooth up to all singular points and boundary components. We demonstrate the analogous result for curvilinear polygonal domains in surfaces. We then specialize to finite circular sectors and cones and via two independent methods obtain variational Polyakov formulas for the dependence of the determinant on the opening angle. Notably, this requires the conformal factor to be logarithmically singular at the vertex. We further obtain explicit formulas for the determinant for finite circular sectors and cones.

Abstract:The specialised uses of solid angles mean that they are quite unfamiliar quantities. This article, apart from making solid angles a little more familiar, brings out several topics of general interest, such as how units are interrelated and how equations depend on the choice of units. Although the steradian is commonly used as the unit for solid angle, another unit, the square degree, is used in astronomy, and a unit introduced here, the solid degree (with 360 solid degrees in a hemisphere) could be used with benefits that are similar to those of the degree when it is used as the unit for plane angle. The article, which is suitable for students at A-level and introductory undergraduate level, also shows how solid angles can provide a gentle introduction to crystal structure, spherical trigonometry and non-Euclidean geometry.

Abstract:In this article we study the following question: What can be the measure of the minimal solid angle of a simplex in $\mathbb{R}^d$? We show that in dimensions three it is not greater than the solid angle of the regular simplex. And in dimension four the same holds for simplices sufficiently close to the regular simplex. We also study a similar question for trihedral and dihedral angles of polyhedra compared to those of regular solids.

Abstract:Surface geometry plays a central role in the design of bridges, vaults and shells, using various techniques for generating a geometry which aims to balance structural, spatial, aesthetic and construction requirements. In this paper we propose the use of surfaces defined such that given closed curves subtend a constant solid angle at all points on the surface and form its boundary. Constant solid angle surfaces enable one to control the boundary slope and hence achieve an approximately constant span-to-height ratio as the span varies, making them structurally viable for shell structures. In addition, when the entire surface boundary is in the same plane, the slope of the surface around the boundary is constant and thus follows a principal curvature direction. Such surfaces are suitable for surface grids where planar quadrilaterals meet the surface boundaries. They can also be used as the Airy stress function in the form finding of shells having forces concentrated at the corners. Our technique employs the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to calculate the solid angle of a point in space and Newton's method to move the point onto the constant solid angle surface. We use the Biot-Savart law to find the gradient of the solid angle. The technique can be applied in parallel to each surface point without an initial mesh, opening up for future studies and other applications when boundary curves are known but the initial topology is unknown. We show the geometrical properties, possibilities and limitations of surfaces of constant solid angle using examples in three dimensions.

Abstract:Given a smooth closed oriented manifold $M$ of dimension $n$ embedded in $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ we study properties of the `solid angle' function $\Phi\colon\mathbb{R}^{n+2}\setminus M\to S^1$. It turns out that a non-critical level set of $\Phi$ is an explicit Seifert hypersurface for $M$.

Abstract:Optical surfaces represented by second-degree polynomials (quadratic or conics) are ubiquitous in optics. We revisit the equations of the conic shapes in the context of grazing incidence optics, gathering together the curves commonly used in x-ray instruments and synchrotron beamlines. We present the equations for paraboloids, ellipsoids, and hyperboloids in a common and consistent notation. We develop the transformations from centered systems that are commonly used to describe conics and their axes of symmetry, to local coordinate systems centered on the off-axis mirror surfaces. The equations presented are directly applicable to ray tracing, fabrication, and metrology calculations. They can also be used to study misalignments, movement tolerances, and aberrations of optical surfaces.

Abstract:AbstractSmoothing of polyhedron with arbitrary topology is an important issue in CAGD and CAD/CAM, but so far it is deemed to be difficult to smooth the complex corners of a polyhedron. In this paper, the concept of distance surfaces of a surface and a solid is introduced, and the incisive properties of such surfaces are addressed which provide a theoretical foundation for modifying a general corner. The method is based on making constricted volume and the maximum distance the volume can be constricted is given too. It is shown that by the proposed method in this paper any polyhedron can be G1 smoothed with quadraic and, sometimes toroidal surfaces. The new approach is suitable for engineering design and NC machining. The associated algorithm based on the classification theorem of corners is simple, fast and robust.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an analytical beam-forming approach capable of synthesizing differently shaped beams for circularly symmetric conformal apertures with axisymmetrical excitations. Closed form formulas of far-field radiation are mathematically derived in order to obtain rotationally symmetric radiation patterns for typical conformal apertures frequently used in satellite and flight vehicle applications, such as the cone-surfaced, truncated cone-surfaced, hybrid disc-cone and sphere-cone apertures. Based on these formulas, various shaped beams, including pencil, flat-topped and bimodal beams can be rapidly achieved by adjusting either the geometric parameters or the excitation distributions of the conformal apertures. The deterministic approach proposed in this paper provides an efficient method to synthesize specified beam shapes for the aforementioned conformal apertures. Collaborating with conventional optimization based beam forming approaches, the proposed approach can effectively shorten the time-consuming optimization in the beam forming of circularly symmetric conformal arrays, especially large conformal arrays.
Maximal Intersection of Spherical Polygons by an Arc with Applications to 4-Axis Machining

Abstract:Many geometric optimization problems in CAD/CAM can be reduced to a maximal intersection problem on the sphere: given a set of N simple spherical polygons on the unit sphere and a real number constant L≤2π, find an arc of length L on the unit sphere that intersects as many spherical polygons as possible. Past results can only solve this maximization problem for two very restricted special cases: the arc must be either a great circle or a semi-great circle. In this paper, a simple and deterministic algorithm based on domain partitioning is presented for solving this maximal arc intersection problem in the general case when the number L is arbitrary. The algorithm is made possible by reducing the domain of the arcs to a continuous sub-space in R2 and then establishing a quotient space partitioning in this sub-space based on a congruence relation. The number of the constituting congruent sub-regions in this quotient space partitioning is shown to have an upper-bound O(E3), where E is the total number of edges on the polygons. The proposed algorithm has a worst-case upper bound O(ME) on its running time, where M is an output-sensitive number and is bounded by O(E3). Examples including two realistic tests for 4-axis NC machining are presented.

Abstract:We present a formula for the signed area of a spherical polygon via prequantization. In contrast to the traditional formula based on the Gauss-Bonnet theorem that requires measuring angles, the new formula mimics Green's theorem and is applicable to a wider range of degenerate spherical curves and polygons.

Abstract:A new method to calculate the magnetic field due to a uniformly magnetized sphere or spherical shell with surface current density ̂ = ̂̂ sin ̂ using solid angle concept is presented. The field can be shown easily to be constant inside the shell and dipole-like outside with a direct integral of the Biot-Savart's law without invoking magnetic vector potential or special scalar functions typically used for this classical problem.

Abstract:We classify all regular three-dimensional convex cones which possess an automorphism group of dimension at least two, and provide analytic expressions for the complete hyperbolic affine spheres which are asymptotic to the boundaries of these cones. The affine spheres are represented by explicit hypersurface immersions into three-dimensional real space. The generic member of the family of immersions is given by elliptic integrals.

Abstract:For a finite planar graph, it associates with some metric spaces, called (regular) spherical polyhedral surfaces, by replacing faces with regular spherical polygons in the unit sphere and gluing them edge-to-edge. We consider the class of planar graphs which admit spherical polyhedral surfaces with the curvature bounded below by 1 in the sense of Alexandrov, i.e. the total angle at each vertex is at most $2pi$. We classify all spherical tilings with regular spherical polygons, i.e. total angles at vertices are exactly $2pi$. We prove that for any graph in this class which does not admit a spherical tiling, the area of the associated spherical polyhedral surface with the curvature bounded below by 1 is at most $4pi - epsilon_0$ for some $epsilon_0 u003e 0$. That is, we obtain a definite gap between the area of such a surface and that of the unit sphere.

Abstract:After having investigated the geodesic triangles and their angle sums in Nil and $Sl\times\mathbb{R}$ geometries we consider the analogous problem in Sol space that is one of the eight 3-dimensional Thurston geometries. We analyse the interior angle sums of geodesic triangles and we prove that it can be larger than, less than or equal to $\pi$. Moreover, we determine the equations of Sol isoptic surfaces of translation-like segments and as a special case of this we examine the Sol translation-like Thales sphere, which we call Thaloid. We also discuss the behavior of this surface. In our work we will use the projective model of Sol described by E. Molnár in \cite{M97}.
