Abstract:We established exact in order estimates an approximation of the Sobolev classes $W^{\boldsymbol{r}}_{p,\boldsymbol{\alpha}}(\mathbb{T}^d)$ of periodic functions of many variables with a bounded dominating mixed derivative. The approximation is made using trigonometric polynomials with the spectrum in step-hyperbolic crosses, and the error is estimated in the metric of the space $B_{q,1}(\mathbb{T}^d)$, $1 \leqslant p, q < \infty$.

Abstract:We study multivariate approximation of periodic functions in the worst case setting with the error measured in the L ∞ norm. We consider algorithms that use standard information Λ std consisting of function values or general linear information Λ all consisting of arbitrary continuous linear functionals. We investigate equivalences of various notions of algebraic and exponential tractability for Λ std and Λ all under the absolute or normalized error criterion, and show that the power of Λ std is the same as the one of Λ all for various notions of algebraic and exponential tractability. Our results can be applied to weighted Korobov spaces and Korobov spaces with exponential weights. This gives a special solution to Open Problem 145 as posed by Novak and Woźniakowski (2012) [40].

Abstract:In this work, we present basic results and applications of Stepanov pseudo almost periodic functions with measures. Using only the continuity assumption, we prove a new composition result of $\mu$-pseudo almost periodic functions in Stepanov sense. Moreover, we present different applications to semilinear differential equations and inclusions in Banach spaces with weak regular forcing terms. We prove the existence and uniqueness of $\mu$-pseudo almost periodic solutions (in the strong sense) to a class of semilinear fractional inclusions and semilinear evolution equations, respectively, provided that the nonlinear forcing terms are only Stepanov $ \mu $-pseudo almost periodic in the first variable and not a uniformly strict contraction with respect to the second argument. Some examples illustrating our theoretical results are also presented.

Abstract:The main goal of the paper is to prove convergence in norm and pointwise almost everywhere on $L^p$, $p\in (1,\infty)$, for certain multiparameter polynomial ergodic averages in the spirit of Dunford and Zygmund for continuous flows. We will pay special attention to quantitative aspects of pointwise convergence phenomena from the point of view of uniform oscillation estimates for multiparameter polynomial Radon averaging operators. In the proof of our main result we develop flexible Fourier methods that exhibit and handle the so-called "parameters-gluing'' phenomenon, an obstruction that arises in studying oscillation and variation inequalities for multiparameter polynomial Radon operators. We will also discuss connections of our main result with a multiparameter variant of the Bellow-Furstenberg problem.

Abstract:Abstract This paper deals with the kernel-based approximation of a multivariate periodic function by interpolation at the points of an integration lattice—a setting that, as pointed out by Zeng et al. (Monte Carlo and Quasi-Monte Carlo Methods 2004, Springer, New York, 2006) and Zeng et al. (Constr. Approx. 30: 529–555, 2009), allows fast evaluation by fast Fourier transform, so avoiding the need for a linear solver. The main contribution of the paper is the application to the approximation problem for uncertainty quantification of elliptic partial differential equations, with the diffusion coefficient given by a random field that is periodic in the stochastic variables, in the model proposed recently by Kaarnioja et al. (SIAM J Numer Anal 58(2): 1068–1091, 2020). The paper gives a full error analysis, and full details of the construction of lattices needed to ensure a good (but inevitably not optimal) rate of convergence and an error bound independent of dimension. Numerical experiments support the theory.

Abstract:We propose a randomized lattice algorithm for approximating multivariate periodic functions over the $d$-dimensional unit cube from the weighted Korobov space with mixed smoothness $\alpha > 1/2$ and product weights $\gamma_1,\gamma_2,\ldots\in [0,1]$. Building upon the deterministic lattice algorithm by Kuo, Sloan, and Woźniakowski (2006), we incorporate a randomized quadrature rule by Dick, Goda, and Suzuki (2022) to accelerate the convergence rate. This randomization involves drawing the number of points for function evaluations randomly, and selecting a good generating vector for rank-1 lattice points using the randomized component-by-component algorithm. We prove that our randomized algorithm achieves a worst-case root mean squared $L_2$-approximation error of order $M^{-\alpha/2 - 1/8 + \varepsilon}$ for an arbitrarily small $\varepsilon > 0$, where $M$ denotes the maximum number of function evaluations, and that the error bound is independent of the dimension $d$ if the weights satisfy $\sum_{j=1}^\infty \gamma_j^{1/\alpha} < \infty$. Our upper bound converges faster than a lower bound on the worst-case $L_2$-approximation error for deterministic rank-1 lattice-based approximation proved by Byrenheid, Kämmerer, Ullrich, and Volkmer (2017). We also show a lower error bound of order $M^{-\alpha/2-1/2}$ for our randomized algorithm, leaving a slight gap between the upper and lower bounds open for future research.

Abstract:We establish a class of pointwise estimates for weak solutions to mixed local and nonlocal parabolic equations involving measure data and merely measurable coefficients via caloric Riesz potentials. Such estimates effectively bound the sizes and oscillations of weak solutions, respectively. The proof relies on demonstrating a new local Hölder estimate with an optimal $L^q$-Tail for weak solutions to the corresponding homogeneous problem, which remarkably extends the $L^\infty$-Tail in previous work. It is worth mentioning that our main results capture both local and nonlocal features of the double phase parabolic equations and, more importantly, remain valid for SOLA (Solutions Obtained by Limit of Approximations).

Abstract:Fourier series approximations of continuous but nonperiodic functions on an interval suffer the Gibbs phenomenon, which means there is a permanent oscillatory overshoot in the neighbourhoods of the endpoints. Fourier extensions circumvent this issue by approximating the function using a Fourier series which is periodic on a larger interval. Previous results on the convergence of Fourier extensions have focused on the error in the L2 norm, but in this paper we analyze pointwise and uniform convergence of Fourier extensions (formulated as the best approximation in the L2 norm). We show that the pointwise convergence of Fourier extensions is more similar to Legendre series than classical Fourier series. In particular, unlike classical Fourier series, Fourier extensions yield pointwise convergence at the endpoints of the interval. Similar to Legendre series, pointwise convergence at the endpoints is slower by an algebraic order of a half compared to that in the interior. The proof is conducted by an analysis of the associated Lebesgue function, and Jackson- and Bernstein-type theorems for Fourier extensions. Numerical experiments are provided. We conclude the paper with open questions regarding the regularized and oversampled least squares interpolation versions of Fourier extensions.

Abstract:We establish pointwise convergence for nonconventional ergodic averages taken along $\lfloor p^c\rfloor$, where $p$ is a prime number and $c\in(1,4/3)$ on $L^r$, $r\in(1,\infty)$. In fact, we consider averages along more general sequences $\lfloor h(p)\rfloor$, where $h$ belongs in a wide class of functions, the so-called $c$-regularly varying functions. We also establish uniform multiparameter oscillation estimates for our ergodic averages and the corresponding multiparameter pointwise ergodic theorem in the spirit of Dunford and Zygmund. A key ingredient of our approach are certain exponential sum estimates, which we also use for establishing a Waring-type result. Assuming that the Riemann zeta function has any zero-free strip upgrades our exponential sum estimates to polynomially saving ones and this makes a conditional result regarding the behavior of our ergodic averages on $L^1$ to not seem entirely out of reach.

Abstract:We establish a general theory of optimal strong error estimation for numerical approximations of a second-order parabolic stochastic partial differential equation with monotone drift driven by a multiplicative infinite-dimensional Wiener process. The equation is spatially discretized by Galerkin methods and temporally discretized by drift-implicit Euler and Milstein schemes. By the monotone and Lyapunov assumptions, we use both the variational and semigroup approaches to derive a spatial Sobolev regularity under the $L_\omega^p L_t^\infty \dot H^{1+\gamma}$-norm and a temporal Hölder regularity under the $L_\omega^p L_x^2$-norm for the solution of the proposed equation with an $\dot H^{1+\gamma}$-valued initial datum for $\gamma\in [0,1]$. Then we make full use of the monotonicity of the equation and tools from stochastic calculus to derive the sharp strong convergence rates $O(h^{1+\gamma}+\tau^{1/2})$ and $O(h^{1+\gamma}+\tau^{(1+\gamma)/2})$ for the Galerkin-based Euler and Milstein schemes, respectively.

Abstract:Exact order estimates are obtained of the best $m$-term trigonometric approximations of the Nikol'skii-Besov classes $B^r_{p, \theta}$ of periodic functions of one and many variables in the space $B_{q,1}$. In the univariate case ($d=1$), we get the orders of the respective approximation characteristics on the classes $B^r_{p, \theta}$ as well as on the Sobolev classes $W^r_{p, {\boldsymbol{\alpha}}}$ in the space $B_{\infty,1}$ in the case $1\leq p \leq \infty$.

Abstract:This review paper highlights the main aspects of the development of research related to the solution of extreme problems in the theory of approximation in the spaces ${\mathcal S}^p$ and $B{\mathcal S}^p$ of periodic and almost periodic summable functions, respectively, where the $l_p$-norms of the sequences of Fourier coefficients are finite. In particular, the review contains the results known so far concerning the best, best $n$-term approximations and widths of classes of functions of one and many variables defined by means of $\psi$-derivatives and generalized moduli of smoothness in the spaces ${\mathcal S}^p$ and $B{\mathcal S}^p$. Particular attention is paid to the development of studies related to the derivation of direct and inverse approximation theorems in these spaces.

Strong Convergence of a Splitting Method for the Stochastic Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

Abstract:We consider the numerical approximation of the stochastic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with additive noise on the one dimensional torus. The complex nature of the equation means that many of the standard approaches developed for stochastic partial differential equations can not be directly applied. We use an energy approach to prove an existence and uniqueness result as well to obtain moment bounds on the stochastic PDE before introducing our numerical discretization. For such a well studied deterministic equation it is perhaps surprising that its numerical approximation in the stochastic setting has not been considered before. Our method is based on a spectral discretization in space and a Lie-Trotter splitting method in time. We obtain moment bounds for the numerical method before proving our main result: strong convergence on a set of arbitrarily large probability. From this we obtain a result on convergence in probability. We conclude with some numerical experiments that illustrate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:We study the periodic $L_2$-discrepancy of point sets in the $d$-dimensional torus. This discrepancy is intimately connected with the root-mean-square $L_2$-discrepancy of shifted point sets, with the notion of diaphony, and with the worst case error of cubature formulas for the integration of periodic functions in Sobolev spaces of mixed smoothness. In discrepancy theory many results are based on averaging arguments. In order to make such results relevant for applications one requires explicit constructions of point sets with ``average'' discrepancy. In our main result we study Korobov's $p$-sets and show that this point sets have periodic $L_2$-discrepancy of average order. This result is related to an open question of Novak and Woźniakowski.
