Abstract:The electrical load has significant impact on the operation of power system. In the past decades, the component based method and the measurement based method were developed to build the load models. However, with the features of the randomness, variation and high order non-linearity, it is difficult to test the accuracy of the built load models. A load modeling method verification strategy is proposed in this paper. The component based load modeling method is performed based on the investigation of the electrical load composition to aggregated the parameters of the load model, while, the measurement based load modeling method uses dynamic measurement to estimate the parameters of the load model. They build the load model via different ways. In this condition, if the parameters obtained by different methods are similar, the effectiveness of the load modeling methods can be verified. These two load modeling methods are carried out in China North West power grid. The results demonstrate that the parameters of the load model obtained by different methods are close with each other. Hence, the component based method and the measurement based method are both effective in the modeling for the real electrical load.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the new demands of smart,grid modeling, including new power sources such as renewable energy, new electrical loads such as the electric vehicle and new network structures such as the self-healing grid. A new line of thought on future power system modeling is presented： element modeling will combine with holistic modeling, offline modeling will develop into online modeling, centralized modeling will develop into hierarchical modeling, entire system modeling will develop into subregional modeling, mechanism model will develop into hybrid model that combines the mechanism and nonmechanism model, and deterministic model will develop into stochastic model. Finally, specific research contents of modeling the renewable energy generation, the microgrid and the hybrid loads are discussed at length.
A Power Grid Partitioning Method for Short-Circuit Current Considering Multi-Scenario Security with an Improved Direct Current Model

Abstract:In order to ensure the security of power grids and control the level of short-circuit currents, a multi-objective optimization method for power grid partitioning is proposed. This method takes into consideration both short-circuit currents and multi-scenario safety constraints. A power grid partitioning optimization model is established to achieve objectives such as minimizing disconnected lines, maximizing safety margins, and ensuring load balance in the main transformers. The model aims to satisfy constraints related to short-circuit current levels, base-case power flow, and N − 1 security. To address the significant deviation in the static security constraint model caused by large amounts of active power losses in large-scale power grids, an improved direct current model is proposed to reduce these errors and meet the accuracy requirements for grid partitioning optimization. Additionally, to adapt to the variability of renewable energy output, an optimization method is proposed, combining three scenarios of renewable energy generation while satisfying short-circuit current and static security constraints. The power grid partitioning model is mathematically formulated as a large-scale mixed-integer linear programming problem, which presents challenges in terms of hardware requirements and computational complexity when solved directly. To mitigate these challenges, equivalent WARD values are assigned to the short-circuit current constraints, base-case constraints, and anticipated fault-induced power flow constraints. Anticipated faults and bottleneck branches are accurately incorporated, and the problem is decomposed into smaller-scale mixed-integer linear programming problems, solved in a stepwise iterative manner. This approach significantly improves computational efficiency and meets the requirements of practical large-scale power grid applications. To validate the proposed model and algorithm, a simulation program is developed using C++, and a simulation analysis of a regional transmission network is conducted. The program ensures the correctness of the proposed model and demonstrates the effectiveness of the algorithm.
Generating synthetic power grids using exponential random graphs models

Abstract:Synthetic power grids enable secure, real-world energy system simulations and are crucial for algorithm testing, resilience assessment, and policy formulation. We propose a novel method for the generation of synthetic transmission power grids using Exponential Random Graph (ERG) models. Our two main contributions are: (1) the formulation of an ERG model tailored specifically for capturing the topological nuances of power grids, and (2) a general procedure for estimating the parameters of such a model conditioned on working with connected graphs. From a modeling perspective, we identify the edge counts per bus type and $k$-triangles as crucial topological characteristics for synthetic power grid generation. From a technical perspective, we develop a rigorous methodology to estimate the parameters of an ERG constrained to the space of connected graphs. The proposed model is flexible, easy to implement, and successfully captures the desired topological properties of power grids.

Abstract:Many systems in the real world can be described by evolving models of complex network, one of which is power system. Classical network models show great inconsistence with practical power grids. Based on the essential evolution characteristics of power grid, we propose a new local-world evolving network model for complex power grid, which exists in many physical complex networks. The statistical properties and dynamics of the proposed model are analytically studied. It is found that the degree distribution of this new model has a power-law tail, and its scaling exponent is between 3 and ∞. Numerical simulations for West American power grid and North China power grid and their comparison with random network and scale-free network indicate that the new evolving network model captures the essential features of real-world power grid. Furthermore, it is proved that power grid is neither a random network nor a scale-free network.

Abstract:Considering that the traditional local-world evolving network model cannot fully reflect the characteristics of real-world power grids, this Letter proposes a new evolving model based on geographical location clusters. The proposed model takes into account the geographical locations and degree values of nodes, and the growth process is in line with the characteristics of the power grid. Compared with the characteristics of real-world power grids, the results show that the proposed model can simulate the degree distribution of China's power grids when the number of nodes is small. When the number of nodes exceeds 800, our model can simulate the USA western power grid's degree distribution. And the average distances and clustering coefficients of the proposed model are close to that of the real world power grids. All these properties confirm the validity and rationality of our model.

Abstract:The power grid is going through significant changes with the introduction of renewable energy sources and incorporation of smart grid technologies. These rapid advancements necessitate new models and analyses to keep up with the various emergent phenomena they induce. A major prerequisite of such work is the acquisition of well-constructed and accurate network datasets for the power grid infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a robust, scalable framework to synthesize power distribution networks which resemble their physical counterparts for a given region. We use openly available information about interdependent road and building infrastructures to construct the networks. In contrast to prior work based on network statistics, we incorporate engineering and economic constraints to create the networks. Additionally, we provide a framework to create ensembles of power distribution networks to generate multiple possible instances of the network for a given region. The comprehensive dataset consists of nodes with attributes such as geo-coordinates, type of node (residence, transformer, or substation), and edges with attributes such as geometry, type of line (feeder lines, primary or secondary) and line parameters. For validation, we provide detailed comparisons of the generated networks with actual distribution networks. The generated datasets represent realistic test systems (as compared to standard IEEE test cases) that can be used by network scientists to analyze complex events in power grids and to perform detailed sensitivity and statistical analyses over ensembles of networks.

Abstract:Abstract Assessing novel methods for increasing power system resilience against cyber-physical hazards requires real power grid data or high-quality synthetic data. However, for security reasons, even basic connection information for real power grid data are not publicly available. We develop a randomised model for generating realistic synthetic power networks based on the Delaunay triangulation and demonstrate that it captures important features of real power networks. To validate our model, we introduce a new metric for network similarity based on topological data analysis. We demonstrate the utility of our approach in application to IEEE test cases and European power networks. We identify the model parameters for two IEEE test cases and two European power grid networks and compare the properties of the generated networks with their corresponding benchmark networks.

Large-deviations of the basin stability of power grids

Abstract:Energy grids play an important role in modern society. In recent years, there was a shift from using few central power sources to using many small power sources, due to efforts to increase the percentage of renewable energies. Therefore, the properties of extremely stable and unstable networks are of interest. In this paper, distributions of the basin stability, a nonlinear measure to quantify the ability of a power grid to recover from perturbations, and its correlations with other measurable quantities, namely, diameter, flow backup capacity, power-sign ratio, universal order parameter, biconnected component, clustering coefficient, two core, and leafs, are studied. The energy grids are modeled by an Erdős-Rényi random graph ensemble and a small-world graph ensemble, where the latter is defined in such a way that it does not exhibit dead ends. Using large-deviation techniques, we reach very improbable power grids that are extremely stable as well as ones that are extremely unstable. The 1/t-algorithm, a variation of Wang-Landau, which does not suffer from error saturation, and additional entropic sampling are used to achieve good precision even for very small probabilities ranging over eight decades.
Generation of Synthetic Spatially Embedded Power Grid Networks

Abstract:The development of algorithms for enhancing the resilience and efficiency of the power grid requires performance evaluation with real topologies of power transmission networks. However, due to security reasons, such topologies and particularly the locations of the substations and the lines are usually not publicly available. Therefore, we study the structural properties of the North American grids and present an algorithm for generating synthetic spatially embedded networks with similar properties to a given grid. The algorithm uses the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) for density estimation of the node positions and generates a set of nodes with similar spatial distribution to the nodes in a given network. Then, it uses two procedures, which are inspired by the historical evolution of the grids, to connect the nodes. The algorithm has several tunable parameters that allow generating grids similar to any given grid. Particularly, we apply it to the Western Interconnection (WI) and to grids that operate under the SERC Reliability Corporation (SERC) and the Florida Reliability Coordinating Council (FRCC), and show that it generates grids with similar structural and spatial properties to these grids. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to consider the spatial distribution of the nodes and lines and its importance in generating synthetic power grids.

Abstract:Traditional OPA model and its improved models can simulate the cascading failures and reveal the macro-scale of self-organized criticality of the power grid,but lack for considering the effect of the evolvement of topology of the power grid.For the purpose of studying the mechanism of blackouts,an improved OPA model is proposed,in which the structure evolvement of power grid is added to the slow dynamics.Simulation results from two typical complex networks show power grid always organizes itself to criticality in evolving model of small-world network as well as scale-free network.Moreover,from the comparison results between the power grids with two different growth ways,it can be found that the characteristic of small-world power grid makes power loss larger than that in scale-free power grid,and cascading failure in scale-free power grid often lead to lines outage in small scale and ends with little power loss,which can help to release the system stress and decrease the probability of large blackouts.These results can be beneficial in major disturbance mitigation and system planning and upgrading.

Abstract:We propose a model to create synthetic networks that may also serve as a narrative of a certain kind of infrastructure network evolution. It consists of an initialization phase with the network extending tree-like for minimum cost and a growth phase with an attachment rule giving a trade-off between cost-optimization and redundancy. Furthermore, we implement the feature of some lines being split during the grid's evolution. We show that the resulting degree distribution has an exponential tail and may show a maximum at degree two, suitable to observations of real-world power grid networks. In particular, the mean degree and the slope of the exponential decay can be controlled in partial independence. To verify to which extent the degree distribution is described by our analytic form, we conduct statistical tests, showing that the hypothesis of an exponential tail is well-accepted for our model data.

Abstract:Modeling power-grid systems has got a major importance in present days as transformation to renewable energy sources requires the complete re-design of energy transmission. Renewable energy sources can be located quite far from their consumption points because urban and industrial structures do not follow physical constraints and capabilities. Important examples are the sea coast vs inland divisions in the case of wind power. Ill-constructed high-voltage (HV) power grids can cause catastrophic damages to economies as it was demonstrated in recent history via the emergence of large blackout events. The probability distributions of such events was found to be fat-tailed, exhibiting power-law (PL) tails very often. To understand them, self-organized critical direct current (DC) models have been constructed~\cite{car2} and have been shown to describe well the PL exponents of empirical values. However, many details could not be understood as power-grids work with alternating currents (AC) in which phase differences are the primary causes of the power-flows.

Abstract:Fast analysis of power grid networks has been a challenging problem for many years. The huge size renders circuit simulation inefficient and the large number of inputs further limits the application of existing Krylov-subspace macromodeling algorithms. However, strong locality has been observed that two nodes geometrically far have very small electrical impact on each other because of the exponential attenuation. However, no systematic approaches have been proposed to exploit such locality. In this paper, we propose a novel modeling and simulation scheme, which can automatically identify the dominant inputs for a given observed node in a power grid network. This enables us to build extremely compact models by projecting the system onto the locally dominant Krylov subspace corresponding to those dominant inputs only. The resulting simulation can be very fast with the compact models if we only need to view the responses of a few nodes under many different inputs. Experimental results show that the proposed method can have at least 100X speedup over SPICE-like simulations on a number of large power grid networks up to 1M nodes.

Abstract:The topological structure of the power grid plays a key role in the reliable delivery of electricity and price settlement in the electricity market. Incorporation of new energy sources and loads into the grid over time has led to its structural and geographical expansion and can affect its stable operation. This paper presents an intuitive analytical model for the temporal evolution of large grids and uses it to understand common structural features observed in grids across America. In particular, key graph parameters like degree distribution, graph diameter, betweenness centralities, eigen-spread and clustering coefficients, as well as graph processes like infection propagation are used to quantify the model's benefits through comparison with the Western US and ERCOT power grids. The most significant contribution of the developed model is its analytical tractability, that provides a closed form expression for the nodal degree distribution observed in large grids. The discussed model can be used to generate realistic test cases to analyze topological effects on grid functioning and new grid technologies.

The most probable scenario of system failure (synchronization loss) is considered, and it is argued that its knowledge is virtually enough to estimate the probability of failure per unit time. We discuss two numerical methods to obtain the "optimal" evolution leading to failure.

Abstract:Power grids are cyber-physical systems and can be modelled as network systems where individual units (generators, busbars and loads) are interconnected through physical and cyber links. Network components (nodes/edges) may undergo intentional and/or random failures. In catastrophic cases, a failure initiating from a small set of these components can quickly propagate through the whole network, leading to a cascade of failures that might force a deep whole-grid blackout. Often network components have different vitality and protecting some is more critical than others. This manuscript aims to provide a focused overview of modelling power grids as complex networks and their resilience and reliability analysis. We also perform a critical review of vitality metrics and their precision in power grid resilience analysis. The review is accompanied by some simulations on benchmark and real power grids to show the applicability of these concepts in studying resilience.

Tractable learning in under-excited power grids

Abstract:Estimating the structure of physical flow networks such as power grids is critical to secure delivery of energy. This paper discusses statistical structure estimation in power grids in the "under-excited" regime, where a subset of internal nodes do not have external injection. Prior estimation algorithms based on nodal potentials or voltages fail in the under-excited regime. We propose a novel topology learning algorithm for learning underexcited general (non-radial) networks based on physics-informed conservation laws. We prove the asymptotic correctness of our algorithm for grids with non-adjacent under-excited internal nodes. More importantly, we theoretically analyze our algorithm's efficacy under noisy measurements, and determine bounds on maximum noise under which asymptotically correct recovery is guaranteed. Our approach is validated through simulations with non-linear voltage samples generated on test grids with real injection data

Abstract:Based on the random matrix model, we can build statistical models using massive datasets across the power grid, and employ hypothesis testing for anomaly detection. First, the aim of this paper is to make the first attempt to apply the recent free probability result in extracting big data analytics, in particular data fusion. The nature of this work is basic in that new algorithms and analytics tools are proposed to pave the way for the future's research. Second, using the new analytic tool, we are able to make some discovery related to anomaly detection that is very difficult for other approaches. To our best knowledge, there is no similar report in the literature. Third, both linear and nonlinear polynomials of large random matrices can be handled in this new framework. Simulations demonstrate the following: Compared with the linearity, nonlinearity is more flexible in problem modeling and closer to the nature of the reality. In some sense, some other nonlinear matrix polynomials may be more effective for the power grid

Abstract:The topology of a power grid affects its dynamic operation and settlement in the electricity market. Real-time topology identification can enable faster control action following an emergency scenario like failure of a line. This article discusses a graphical model framework for topology estimation in bulk power grids (both loopy transmission and radial distribution) using measurements of voltage collected from the grid nodes. The graphical model for the probability distribution of nodal voltages in linear power flow models is shown to include additional edges along with the operational edges in the true grid. Our proposed estimation algorithms first learn the graphical model and subsequently extract the operational edges using either thresholding or a neighborhood counting scheme. For grid topologies containing no three-node cycles (two buses do not share a common neighbor), we prove that an exact extraction of the operational topology is theoretically guaranteed. This includes a majority of distribution grids that have radial topologies. For grids that include cycles of length three, we provide sufficient conditions that ensure existence of algorithms for exact reconstruction. In particular, for grids with constant impedance per unit length and uniform injection covariances, this observation leads to conditions on geographical placement of the buses. The performance of algorithms is demonstrated in test case simulations.
