Abstract:We consider a three-dimensional effective theory of Polyakov lines derived previously from lattice Yang-Mills theory and QCD by means of a resummed strong coupling expansion. The effective theory is useful for investigations of the phase structure, with a sign problem mild enough to allow simulations also at finite density. In this work we present a numerical method to determine improved values for the effective couplings directly from correlators of the 4d Yang-Mills theory. For values of the gauge coupling up to the vicinity of the phase transition, the dominant short range effective coupling are well described by their corresponding strong coupling series. We provide numerical results also for the longer range interactions, Polyakov lines in higher representations as well as four-point interactions, and discuss the growing significance of non-local contributions as the lattice gets finer. Within this approach the critical Yang-Mills coupling $\beta_c$ is reproduced to better than one percent from a one-coupling effective theory on $N_\tau=4$ lattices while up to five couplings are needed on $N_\tau=8$ for the same accuracy.

Abstract:To investigate the finite-volume effects on the chiral symmetry restoration and the deconfinement transition for a quantum chromodynamics (QCD) system with [Formula: see text] (two quark flavors), we apply the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model by introducing a chiral chemical potential [Formula: see text] artificially. The final numerical results indicate that the introduced chiral chemical potential does not change the critical exponents, but shifts the location of critical end point (CEP) significantly; the ratios for the chiral chemical potentials and temperatures at CEP, [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], are significantly affected by the system size [Formula: see text]. The behavior is that [Formula: see text] increases slowly with [Formula: see text] when [Formula: see text] is “large” and [Formula: see text] decreases first and then increases with [Formula: see text] when [Formula: see text] is “small.” It is also found that for a fixed [Formula: see text], there is a [Formula: see text], where the critical end point vanishes and the whole phase diagram becomes a crossover when [Formula: see text]. Therefore, we suggest that for the heavy-ion collision experiments, which is to study the possible location of CEP, the finite-volume behavior should be taken into account.

Abstract:A three-dimensional effective theory of Polyakov loops has recently been derived from Wilson’s Yang-Mills lattice action by means of a strong coupling expansion. It is valid in the confined phase up to the deconfinement phase transition, for which it predicts the correct order and gives quantitative estimates for the critical coupling. In this work we study its predictive power for further observables like correlation functions and the equation of state. We find that the effective theory correctly reproduces qualitative features and symmetries of the full theory as the continuum is approached. Regarding quantitative predictions, we identify two classes of observables by numerical comparison as well as analytic calculations: correlation functions and their associated mass scales cannot be described accurately from a truncated effective theory, due to its inherently non-local nature involving long-range couplings. On the other hand, phase transitions and bulk thermodynamic quantities are accurately reproduced by the leading local part of the effective theory. In particular, the effective theory description is numerically superior when computing the equation of state at low temperatures or the properties of the phase transition.

Abstract:We compute the effective action of the Polyakov loop in SU(2) and SU(3) Yang-Mills theory using a previously developed covariant variational approach. The formalism is extended to background gauge and it is shown how to relate the low order Green's functions to the ones in Landau gauge studied earlier. The renormalization procedure is discussed. The self-consistent effective action is derived and evaluated using the numerical solution of the gap equation. We find a clear signal for a deconfinement phase transition at finite temperatures, which is second order for SU(2) and first order for SU(3). The critical temperatures obtained are in reasonable agreement with high precision lattice data.

Thermodynamic Potential of the Polyakov Loop in SU(3) Quenched Lattice QCD

Abstract:Using SU(3) lattice QCD, we study for the first time the effective potential of the Polyakov loop $\langle P \rangle$ at finite temperature, i.e., the thermodynamic potential, in the field-theoretical way. In the framework of the reweighting method in lattice QCD, we express the effective potential $V_{\rm eff}(\langle P \rangle)$ using the expectation value without a source term. In particular, we consider the most difficult and interesting case of vacuum coexistence at the critical temperature $T_c$. We adopt SU(3) quenched lattice QCD on $48^3 \times 6$ at $\beta$= 5.89379, which corresponds exactly to the critical temperature $T_c$ of the deconfinement phase transition, and use 200,000 Monte Carlo configurations. After categorizing the gauge configurations into one $Z_3$-symmetric and three $Z_3$-broken vacua each, we perform a vacuum-associated reweighting method, using the gauge configurations around each vacuum separately. Finally, we obtain the Polyakov-loop effective potential, which is well depicted around the $Z_3$-symmetric and $Z_3$-broken vacua.

Abstract:We revisit the Polyakov Loop coupled Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model that maintains the Polyakov loop dynamics in the limit of zero temperature. This is of interest for astrophysical applications in the interior of neutron stars. For this purpose we re-examine the form of the potential for the deconfinement order parameter at finite baryonic densities. Since the modification of this potential at any temperature is formally equivalent to assigning a baryonic charge to gluons, we develop a more general formulation of the present model that cures this spurious effect and is normalized to match the asymptotic behaviour of the QCD equation of state given by $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$ and partial $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3\ln^2\alpha_s)$ perturbative results.

Abstract:The Nambu Jona-Lasinio model with a Polyakov loop is extended to finite isospin chemical potential case, which is characterized by simultaneous coupling of pion condensate, chiral condensate and Polyakov loop. The pion condensate, chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop as functions of temperature and isospin chemical potential are investigated by minimizing the thermodynamic potential of the system. The resulting $(T,\mu_I)$ phase diagram is studied with emphasis on the critical point and Polyakov loop dynamics. The tricritical point for the pion superfluidity phase transition is confirmed and the phase transition for isospin symmetry restoration in high isospin chemical potential region perfectly coincides with the crossover phase transition for Polyakov loop. These results are in agreement with the Lattice QCD data.

Abstract:We extend the Polyakov-loop improved Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to 2+1 flavor case to study the chiral and deconfinement transitions of strongly interacting matter at finite temperature and nonzero chemical potential. The Polyakov loop, the chiral susceptibility of light quarks (u and d), and the strange quark number susceptibility as functions of temperature at zero chemical potential are determined and compared with the recent results of lattice QCD simulations. We find that there is always an inflection point in the curve of strange quark number susceptibility accompanying the appearance of the deconfinement phase, which is consistent with the result of lattice QCD simulations. Predictions for the case at nonzero chemical potential and finite temperature are made as well. We give the phase diagram in terms of the chemical potential and temperature and find that the critical end point moves down to low temperature and finally disappears with the decrease of the strength of the 't Hooft flavor-mixing interaction.

Abstract:We construct a hadron-quark two-phase model based on the Walecka-quantum hadrodynamics and the improved Polyakov-Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with an explicit chemical potential dependence of Polyakov-loop potential ($\mu$PNJL model). With respect to the original PNJL model, the confined-deconfined phase transition is largely affected at low temperature and large chemical potential. Using the two-phase model, we investigate the equilibrium transition between hadronic and quark matter at finite chemical potentials and temperatures. The numerical results show that the transition boundaries from nuclear to quark matter move towards smaller chemical potential (lower density) when the $\mu$-dependent Polyakov loop potential is taken. In particular, for charge asymmetric matter, we compute the local asymmetry of $u, d$ quarks in the hadron-quark coexisting phase, and analyse the isospin-relevant observables possibly measurable in heavy-ion collision (HIC) experiments. In general new HIC data on the location and properties of the mixed phase would bring relevant information on the expected chemical potential dependence of the Polyakov Loop contribution.

Dual simulation of a Polyakov loop model at finite baryon density: correlations and screening masses

Abstract:Computations of screening masses in finite-temperature QCD at finite density are plagued by the sign problem and have been performed so far with an imaginary chemical potential. Here, we use a dual formulation of a Polyakov-loop model which allows the determination of screening masses at real baryon chemical potential. This is a second paper in a series devoted to a detailed study of dual Polyakov-loop models at finite density. While the first paper was mainly devoted to establishing the phase diagram of the model, here we compute correlation functions of the Polyakov loops and the second-moment correlation length at non-zero chemical potential. This enables us to evaluate numerically the screening masses from correlations of the real and imaginary parts of the Polyakov loops. We also compute these masses in the mean-field approximation and compare with numerical results. In addition, we provide a quantitative improvement of the general phase diagram presented in the first paper.

A Scaling Relation, $Z_m$-type Deconfinement Phases and Imaginary Chemical Potentials in Finite Temperature Large-$N$ Gauge Theories

Abstract:We show that the effective potentials for the Polyakov loops in finite temperature SU$(N)$ gauge theories obey a certain scaling relation with respect to temperature in the large-$N$ limit. This scaling relation strongly constrains the possible terms in the Polyakov loop effective potentials. Moreover, by using the effective potentials in the presence of imaginary chemical potentials or imaginary angular velocities in several models, we find that phase transitions to $Z_m$-type deconfinement phases ($Z_m$ phase) occur, where the eigenvalues of the Polyakov loop are distributed $Z_m$ symmetrically. Physical quantities in the $Z_m$ phase obey the scaling properties of the effective potential. The models include Yang-Mills (YM) theories, the bosonic BFSS matrix model and ${\mathcal N}=4$ supersymmetric YM theory on $S^3$. Thus, the phase diagrams of large-$N$ gauge theories with imaginary chemical potentials are very rich and the stable $Z_m$ phase would be ubiquitous. Monte-Carlo calculations also support this. As a related topic, we discuss the phase diagrams of large-$N$ YM theories with real angular velocities in finite volume spaces.

Abstract:We analyze the chiral restoration and deconfinement transitions in the framework of a non-local chiral quark model which includes terms leading to the quark wave function renormalization, and takes care of the effect of gauge interactions by coupling the quarks with the Polyakov loop. Non-local interactions are described by considering both a set of exponential form factors, and a set of form factors obtained from a fit to the mass and renormalization functions obtained in lattice calculations.

In particular for the special cases of electric- and magnetic-like field configurations we construct an explicit expression for the associated effective Lagrangian that, upon extremization for two constant scalar coefficients, allows to evaluate its full, all-order result at arbitrarily large field strengths. We demonstrate that our manifestly nonperturbative expression correctly reproduces the known results for the Heisenberg-Euler effective action at large N , namely its all-loop strong field limit and its low-order perturbative expansion in powers of the fine-structure constant.

Toward Exact Critical Exponents from the low-order loop expansion of the Effective Potential in Quantum Field Theory

Abstract:The asymptotic strong-coupling behavior as well as the exact critical exponents from scalar field theory even in the simplest case of $1+1$ dimensions have not been obtained yet. Hagen Kleinert has linked both critical exponents and strong coupling parameters to each other. He used a clevert variational technique ( back to kleinert and Feynman) to extract accurate values for the strong coupling parameters from which he was able to extract precise critical exponents. In this work, we suggest a simple method of using the effective potential (low-order) to obtain exact values for the strong-coupling parameters for the $\phi^{4}$ scalar field theory in $0+1$ and $1+1$ space-time dimensions. For the $0+1$ case, our results coincide with the well-known exact values from literature while for the $1+1$ case we test the results by obtaining the corresponding exact critical exponent. As the effective potential is a well-established tool in quantum field theory, we expect that the results can be easily extended to the most important three dimensional case and then the dream of getting exact critical exponents is made possible.

Abstract:We compare the grand-canonical partition function at fixed chemical potential μ with the canonical partition function at fixed baryon number B, formally and by numerical simulations at μ=0 and B=0 with four flavors of staggered quarks. We verify that the free energy densities are equal in the thermodynamic limit, and show that they can be well described by the hadron resonance gas at TTc. Small differences between the two ensembles, for thermodynamic observables characterizing the deconfinement phase transition, vanish with increasing lattice size. These differences are solely caused by contributions of nonzero baryon density sectors, which are exponentially suppressed with increasing volume. The Polyakov loop shows a different behavior: for all temperatures and volumes, its expectation value is exactly zero in the canonical formulation, whereas it is always nonzero in the commonly used grand-canonical formulation. We clarify this paradoxical difference, and show that the nonvanishing Polyakov loop expectation value is due to contributions of nonzero triality states, which are not physical, because they give zero contribution to the partition function.

The planar limit of the $\mathcal{N} = 2$ $\mathbf{E}$-theory: numerical calculations and the large $λ$ expansion

Abstract:We study correlation functions of local operators and Wilson loop expectation values in the planar limit of a 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal ${\rm SU}(N)$ YM theory with hypermultiplets in the symmetric and antisymmetric representations of the gauge group. This so-called $\mathbf{E}$ theory is closely related to $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and has a holographic description in terms of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orientifold of AdS$_5\times S^5$. Using recent matrix model results based on supersymmetric localization we develop efficient numerical methods to calculate two- and three-point functions of certain single trace operators as well as 1/2-BPS Wilson loop expectation values as a function of the 't Hooft coupling $\lambda$. We use our numerical results to arrive at simple analytic expressions for these correlators valid up to the sixth order in the $\lambda^{-1/2}$ strong coupling expansion. These results provide explicit field theory predictions for the $\alpha'$ corrections to the supergravity approximation of type IIB string theory on the AdS$_5\times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orientifold.

Abstract:The aim of this thesis is to systematically and consistently study strongly coupled bosonic and fermionic conformal field theories using the large quantum number expansion. The idea behind it is to study sectors of conformal field theories that are characterised by large quantum numbers under global symmetries. In this limit, the conformal field theories, even if they initially were strongly coupled and interacting, can now be written in terms of an effective field theory that is weakly coupled. Some common effective field theories that appear in the literature are the bosonic conformal superfluid and the Fermi sphere, condensed matter systems characterised by a high particle density, making the study of such systems a cross-disciplinary matter.
