Abstract:Matthew Baker investigated, in previous work, an elegant, infinite-length game that may be used to study subsets of real numbers. We present two accessible examples of how an important technique from set theory, or a different technique from infinite game theory, may be used to answer Baker's question on whether this game provides a precise characterization for countable subsets of real numbers, and we connect this game to the well-studied Banach-Mazur game from topology.

Using Figurate Numbers in Elementary Number Theory - Discussing a 'Useful' Heuristic From the Perspectives of Semiotics and Cognitive Psychology

Abstract:The use of figurate numbers (e.g., in the context of elementary number theory) can be considered a heuristic in the field of problem solving or proving. In this paper, we want to discuss this heuristic from the perspectives of the semiotic theory of Peirce ("diagrammatic reasoning" and "collateral knowledge") and cognitive psychology ("schema theory" and "Gestalt psychology"). We will make use of several results taken from our research to illustrate first-year students' problems when dealing with figurate numbers in the context of proving. The considerations taken from both theoretical perspectives will help to partly explain such phenomena. It will be shown that the use of figurate numbers must not be considered to be any kind of help for learners or some way of 'easy' mathematics. Working in this representational system has to be learned and practiced as another kind of knowledge is necessary for working with figurate numbers. The named findings also touch upon the concept of 'proofs that explain.' Finally, we will highlight some implications for teaching and point to a number of demands for future research.

Abstract:In this work, a variant of the birth and death chain with constant intensities, originally introduced by Bruno de Finetti way back in 1957, is revisited. This fact is also underlined by the choice of the title, which is clearly a literal translation of the original one. Characteristic of the variant is that it allows negative jumps of any magnitude. And this, as explained in the paper, might be useful in offering some insight into the issue, arising in numerous situations, of inferring the number of the undetected elements of a given population. One thinks, for example, of problems concerning abundance or richness of species. The author's purpose is twofold: to align the original de Finetti's construction with the modern, well-established theory of the continuous-time Markov chains with discrete state space and show how it could be used to make probabilistic previsions on the number of the unseen elements of a population. With the aim of enhancing the possible practical applications of the model, one discusses the statistical point estimation of the rates which characterize its infinitesimal description.

Abstract:Since the mathematicians of ancient Greece until Fermat, since Gauss until today; the way how the primes along the numerical straight line are distributed has become perhaps the most difficult math problem; many people believe that their distribution is chaotic, governed only by the laws of chance. Abstract:In 1957 Leo Moser published a problem in American Mathematical Monthly asking whether knowing the set of all pairwise sums of five numbers one could determine the original numbers. Problem was quickly generalized as "Is it always possible to restore a collection of $n$ numbers from the collection of its $s$-sums?"; it turned out to be a very interesting and nontrivial question in additive number theory and combinatorics. On its sixtieth anniversary we present here a survey of all the known research, results and techniques used in various attempts to solve this problem. Some new findings and open questions are presented as well.

Abstract:Set out here are some fundamental theories that may be regarded as newly discovered metamathematics of the odd integers in relation to the Collatz conjecture (also called the 3x+1 problem). Originally motivated by the requirement to invent a new optimised integer factorisation method, this foundational paper primarily focuses on the foundation, formalisation and presentation of a new theoretical framework (schema or blueprint) of a Collatz based number system. The proposed framework is based on metamathematical theories meticulously derived through iterative analyses and reverse engineering (i.e., by hand and mathematical computations) of many large subsets of integers. A collation of the fundamental results from these analytical attempts has led to the establishment of a completely deterministic model of a generalised Collatz based number system that is fundamentally and strangely associated with nonchaotic patterns. The proposed Collatz based number schema comprises of both visual and theoretical representations of many hidden patterns in Collatz sequences yet to be reported in literature. This novel theoretical approach may be viewed as a new method to contemporary Collatz conjecture research which may be connected to the proofs of many other mathematical theorems in number theory and discrete mathematics.

Abstract:The notion of two-numbers of connected Riemannian manifolds was introduced about 35 years ago in [Un invariant geometrique riemannien, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Math. 295 (1982), 389--391] by B.-Y. Chen and T. Nagano. Later, two-numbers have been studied by a number of mathematicians and it was then proved that two-numbers related closely with several important areas in mathematics. The main purpose of this article is to survey on two-numbers and their applications. At the end of this survey, we present several open problems and conjectures on two-numbers.

Abstract:How many odd numbers are there? How many even numbers? From Galileo to Cantor, the suggestion was that there are the same number of odd, even and natural numbers, because all three sets can be mapped in one-one fashion to each other. This jars with our intuition. Cardinality fails to discriminate between sets that are intuitively different in size. The class of \emph{surreal numbers} $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{No}}$ is the largest possible ordered field. In this work we define a function, the \emph{magnum}, mapping the power set of the natural numbers to a subclass of the surreals, the {surnatural numbers} $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{Nn}}$ (the non-negative omnific integers). Set magnums are found to be consistent with our intuition about relative set sizes. The magnum of a proper subset of a set is strictly less than the magnum of the set itself, in harmony with Euclid's axiom ``the whole is greater than the part''. Two approaches are taken to specify magnums. First, they are determined by following the genetic assignment of magnums in the way the surreal numbers themselves are defined. Second, the counting sequence, which is defined for every set of natural numbers, is extended using a Transfer Axiom, to evaluate it on the surnatural numbers. The two methods are shown to be consistent. Several theorems are proved, establishing that the family of sets with magnums form what we call a magnum space. Finally, these theorems are employed to evaluate the magnums of a number of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:James Maynard has taken the analytic number theory world by storm in the last decade, proving several important and surprising theorems, resolving questions that had seemed far out of reach. He is perhaps best known for his work on small and large gaps between primes (which were discussed, hot off the press, in my 2015 CEB lecture). In this article we will discuss two other Maynard breakthroughs: -- Mersenne numbers take the form $2^n-1$ and so appear as $111\dots 111$ in base 2, having no digit `$0$'. It is a famous conjecture that there are infinitely many such primes. More generally it was, until Maynard's work, an open question as to whether there are infinitely many primes that miss any given digit, in any given base. We will discuss Maynard's beautiful ideas that went into partly resolving this question. -- In 1926, Khinchin gave remarkable conditions for when real numbers can usually be ``well approximated'' by infinitely many rationals. However Khinchin's theorem regarded 1/2, 2/4, 3/6 as distinct rationals and so could not be easily modified to cope, say, with approximations by fractions with prime denominators. In 1941 Duffin and Schaefer proposed an appropriate but significantly more general analogy involving approximation only by reduced fractions (which is much more useful). We will discuss its recent resolution by Maynard together with Dimitris Koukoulopoulos.

Debunking Cantor: New Set-Theoretical and Logical Considerations

Abstract:For more than a century, Cantor's theory of transfinite numbers has played a pivotal role in set theory, with ramifications that extend to many areas of mathematics. This article extends earlier findings with a fresh look at the critical facts of Cantor's theory: i) Cantor's widely renowned Diagonalization Argument (CDA) is fully refuted by a set of counter-examples that expose the fallacy of this proof. ii) The logical inconsistencies of CDA are revisited, exposing the short-comings of CDA's implementation of the method of proof by contradiction. iii) The denumerability of the power set of the set of the natural numbers, P(N), is substantiated by a proof that takes full account of all the infinite subsets of N. Such a result confirms the denumerability of the set of the real numbers, R, and with it the countable nature of the continuum. iv) Given that the denumerable character of (probably) all infinite sets makes their comparison in terms of one-to-one correspondences a rather pointless exercise, a new concept of relative cardinality is introduced which facilitates a quantitative evaluation of their different magnitudes.

Abstract:Motivated by their research on automorphism groups of pseudo-real Riemann surfaces, Bujalance, Cirre and Conder have conjectured that there are infinitely many primes $p$ such that $p+2$ has all its prime factors $q\equiv -1$ mod~$(4)$. We use theorems of Landau and Raikov to prove that the number of integers $n\le x$ with only such prime factors $q$ is asymptotic to $cx/\sqrt{\ln x}$ for a specific constant $c=0.4865\ldots$. Heuristic arguments, following Hardy and Littlewood, then yield a conjecture that the number of such primes $p\le x$ is asymptotic to $c'\int_2^x(\ln t)^{-3/2}dt$ for a constant $c'=0.8981\ldots$. The theorem, the conjecture and a similar conjecture applying the Bateman--Horn Conjecture to other pseudo-real Riemann surfaces are supported by evidence from extensive computer searches.

Abstract:We give a short proof of a recent result of Claesson, Dukes, Franklín and Stefánsson, that connects tournament score sequences and the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv numbers from additive number theory. We show that this connection is, in fact, an instance of the Lévy-Khintchine formula from probability theory, and highlight how such formulas can be useful in enumerative combinatorics. Our proof combines renewal theory with the representation of score sequences as lattice paths, due to Erdős and Moser in the 1960s. These probabilistic and geometric points of view lead to a simpler proof. A key idea in the original proof and ours is to consider cyclic shifts of score sequences. We observe, however, that this idea is already present in Kleitman's remarks added to one of Moser's final articles in 1968, and in subsequent works by Kleitman. In the same article, Moser conjectured that there are asymptotically $C4^n/n^{5/2}$ many score sequences of length $n$. Combining the arguments in the current work with those in a recent work by the third author, we demonstrate the utility of the Lévy-Khintchine method, by giving a short proof of Moser's conjecture.
