Abstract:In this paper, we study the Johnson homomorphisms of basis-conjugating automorphism groups of free groups. We construct obstructions for the surjectivity of the Johnson homomorphisms. By using it, we determine its cokernels of degree up to four, and give further observations for degree greater than four. As applications, we give the affirmative answer for the Andreadakis problem for degree four. We show that the cup product map of the first cohomology groups of the basis-conjugating automorphism group of a free group into the second cohomology group is surjective. Finally, we calculate the twisted first cohomology groups of the braid-permutation automorphism groups of a free group.

Abstract:Abstract The Johnson kernel is the subgroup of the mapping class group of a surface generated by Dehn twists along bounding simple closed curves, and has the second Johnson homomorphism as a free abelian quotient. In terms of the representation theory of the symplectic group, we give a complete description of cup products of two classes in the first rational cohomology of the Johnson kernel obtained by the rational dual of the second Johnson homomorphism.

Abstract:This paper is an exploration of the faithful transitive permutation representations of the orientation-preserving automorphisms groups of highly symmetric toroidal maps and hypermaps. The main theorems of this paper give a list of all possible degrees of these specific groups. This extends prior accomplishments of the authors, wherein their focus was confined to the study of the automorphisms groups of toroidal regular maps and hypermaps. In addition the authors bring out the recently developed {\sc GAP} package {\sc corefreesub} that can be used to find faithful transitive permutation representations of any group. With the aid of this powerful tool, the authors show how Schreier coset graphs of the automorphism groups of toroidal maps and hypermaps can be easily constructed.

Abstract:We obtain an explicit description of the endomorphisms of free-abelian by free groups together with a characterization of when they are injective and surjective. As a consequence we see that free-abelian by free groups are Hopfian and not coHopfian, and we investigate the isomorphism problem and the Brinkmann Problem for this family of groups. In particular, we prove that the isomorphism problem (undecidable in general) is decidable when restricted to finite actions, and that the Brinkmann Problem is decidable both for monomorphisms and automorphisms.

Abstract:We prove the existence of homeomorphisms of a closed, orientable surface of genus 3 or greater that do not extend to any handlebody bounded by the surface. We show that such homeomorphisms exist arbitrarily deep in the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group. The second and third terms of the Johnson filtration are the well-known Torelli group and Johnson subgroup, respectively. Richard Hain has obtained very similar results by different methods.

The Johnson-Morita theory for the handlebody group

Abstract:The Johnson-Morita theory is an algebraic approach to the mapping class group of a surface, in which one considers its action on the successive nilpotent quotients of the fundamental group of the surface. In this paper, we develop an analogue of this theory for the handlebody group, i.e. the mapping class group of a 3-dimensional handlebody. Thus, we obtain a filtration on the handlebody group, prove that its associated graded embeds into a Lie algebra of "special derivations", and give an explicit diagrammatic description of this graded Lie algebra in terms of "oriented trees with beads". Our new diagrammatic method reveals part of the richness of the algebraic structure of the handlebody group, which lies mainly in the subgroup generated by Dehn twists along meridians: the so-called "twist group". As an application, we obtain that each term of the associated graded of the lower central series of the twist group is infinitely generated.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a Riemann surface with a non-abelian fundamental group and for each integer $k \geq 2$ or $k=\infty$, let $\widetilde{S}_{k}$ be its $k$-homology cover. The surface $\widetilde{S}_{k}$ admits a group of conformal automorphisms $M_{k} \cong {\rm H}_{1}(S;{\mathbb Z}_{k})$, where ${\mathbb Z}_{\infty}:={\mathbb Z}$, such that $S=\widetilde{S}_{k}/M_{k}$. If $L \leq {\rm Aut}(S)$, then there is a short exact sequence $1 \to M_{k} \to \widetilde{L}_{k} \to L \to 1$, where $\widetilde{L}_{k}$ is a subgroup of conformal automorphisms of $\widetilde{S}_{k}$. In general, the above exact sequence does not need to be split. This paper investigates situations when the splitting is or is not obtained.

Abstract:The group of 2-by-2 matrices with integer entries and determinant $\pm > 1$ can be identified either with the group of outer automorphisms of a rank two free group or with the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of a 2-dimensional torus. Thus this group is the beginning of three natural sequences of groups, namely the general linear groups ${\rm{GL}}(n,\Z)$, the groups of outer automorphisms of free groups of rank $n\geq 2$, and the mapping class groups of closed orientable surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. Much of the work on mapping class groups and automorphisms of free groups is motivated by the idea that these sequences of groups are strongly analogous. In this article we highlight a few of the most striking similarities and differences between these series of groups and present a list of open problems motivated by this philosophy.

Abstract:We develop a class of homeomorphisms on a compact homogeneous space of a transitive group action and show how the class sheds new light on a decomposition problem. We further use this class to show that every such homogeneous space in a locally convex topological vector space which is also convex must necessarily be trivial, ie. a singleton set. Additionally, this class of homeomorphisms allows us to relate the induced group action on the space of continuous functions to the action on the homogeneous space.

A survey of equivariant operations on quantum cohomology for symplectic manifolds

Abstract:In this survey paper, we will collate various different ideas and thoughts regarding equivariant operations on quantum cohomology (and some in more general Floer theory) for a symplectic manifold. We will discuss a general notion of equivariant quantum operations associated to finite groups, in addition to their properties, examples, and calculations. We will provide a brief connection to Floer theoretic invariants. We then provide abridged descriptions (as per the author's understanding) of work by other authors in the field, along with their major results. Finally we discuss the first step to compact groups, specifically $S^1$-equivariant operations. Contained within this survey are also a sketch of the idea of mod-$p$ pseudocycles, and an in-depth appendix detailing the author's understanding of when one can define these equivariant operations in an additive way.

Abstract:From the viewpoint of Johnson graphs as slices of a hypercube, we derive a novel algebra homomorphism $\sharp$ from the universal Racah algebra $\Re$ into $U(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. We use the Casimir elements of $\Re$ to describe the kernel of $\sharp$. By pulling back via $\sharp$ every $U(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-module can be viewed as an $\Re$-module. We show that for any finite-dimensional $U(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-module $V$, the $\Re$-module $V$ is completely reducible and three generators of $\Re$ act on every irreducible $\Re$-submodule of $V$ as a Leonard triple. In particular, Leonard triples can be constructed in terms of the second dual distance operator of the hypercube $H(D,2)$ and a decomposition of the second distance operator of $H(D,2)$ induced by Johnson graphs.

Abstract:The concept of Gromov hyperbolicity is a geometric concept that leads to a rich general theory. Johnson and Kneser graphs are interesting combinatorial graphs defined from systems of sets. In this work we compute the precise value of the hyperbolicity constant of every Johnson graph. Also, we obtain good bounds on the hyperbolicity constant of every Kneser graph, and in many cases, we even compute its precise value.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of Johnson pseudo-Connes amenability for dual Banach algebras. We study the relation between this new notion with the various notions of Connes amenability like Connes amenability, approximate Connes amenability and pseudo Connes amenability. We also investigate some hereditary properties of this new notion. We prove that for a locally compact group $G$, $M(G)$ is Johnson pseudo-Connes amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable. Also we show that for every non-empty set $I$, $\mathbb{M}_I(\mathbb{C})$ under this new notion is forced to have a finite index. Finally, we provide some examples of certain dual Banach algebras and we study their Johnson pseudo-Connes amenability.
