Abstract:Phenomenological models of quantum gravity often consider the existence of some form of minimal length. This feature is commonly described in the context of quantum mechanics and using the corresponding formalism and techniques. Although few attempts at a quantum field-theoretical description of a minimal length has been proposed, they are rather the exception and there is no general agreement on the correct one. Here, using the quantum-mechanical model as a guidance, we propose a first-principle definition of a quantum field theory including a minimal length. Specifically, we propose a two-step procedure, by first describing the quantum-mechanical models as a classical field theory and subsequently quantizing it. We are thus able to provide a foundation for further exploration of the implications of a minimal length in quantum field theory.

Other related ideas seem to be drowning in interpretational quagmires. This leads us to consider alternative lines of thought for such phenomenological search. We discuss the underlying viewpoints and briefly mention their possible connections with other current theoretical ideas.
Relational Lorentzian Asymptotically Safe Quantum Gravity: Showcase model

Abstract:In a recent contribution we identified possible points of contact between the asymptotically safe and canonical approach to quantum gravity. The idea is to start from the reduced phase space (often called relational) formulation of canonical quantum gravity which provides a reduced (or physical) Hamiltonian for the true (observable) degrees of freedom. The resulting reduced phase space is then canonically quantised and one can construct the generating functional of time ordered Wightman (i.e. Feynman) or Schwinger distributions respectively from the corresponding time translation unitary group or contraction semigroup respectively as a path integral. For the unitary choice that path integral can be rewritten in terms of the Lorentzian Einstein Hilbert action plus observable matter action and a ghost action. The ghost action depends on the Hilbert space representation chosen for the canonical quantisation and a reduction term that encodes the reduction of the full phase space to the phase space of observavbles. This path integral can then be treated with the methods of asymptically safe quantum gravity in its {\it Lorentzian} version.

Abstract:Lorentz invariance belongs to the fundamental symmetries of nature. It is basic for the successful Standard Model of Particle Physics. Nevertheless, within the last decades, Lorentz invariance has been repeatedly questioned. In fact, there exist different research programs addressing this problem. We argue that a most adequate understanding of a possible violation of Lorentz invariance is achieved in the framework of the gauge-theoretic approach to gravity: a non-vanishing nonmetricity of a metric-affine geometry of spacetime heralds the violation of the Lorentz symmetry.

Abstract:Bohmian mechanics and spontaneous collapse models are theories that overcome the quantum measurement problem. While they are naturally formulated for non-relativistic systems, it has proven difficult to formulate Lorentz invariant extensions, primarily due to the inherent non-locality, which is unavoidable due to Bell's theorem. There are trivial ways to make space-time theories Lorentz invariant, but the challenge is to achieve what Bell dubbed ``serious Lorentz invariance''. However, this notion is hard to make precise. This is reminiscent of the debate on the meaning of general invariance in Einstein's theory of general relativity. The issue there is whether the requirement of general invariance is physically vacuous (in the sense that any space-time theory can be made generally invariant) or whether it is a fundamental physical principle. Here, we want to consider two of the more promising avenues that have emerged from that debate in order to explore what serious Lorentz invariance could mean. First, we will consider Anderson's approach based on the identification of absolute objects. Second, we will consider a relativity principle for isolated subsystems. Using these criteria, we will evaluate a number of Lorentz invariant Bohmian models and a spontaneous collapse model, finding that the latter satisfies both criteria, while there are some Bohmian models that violate the criteria. However, some Bohmian models that satisfy both criteria still do not seem seriously Lorentz invariant. While these notions may hence still not capture exactly what serious Lorentz invariance ought to be, they clarify what aspects of relativity theory (in addition to locality) may need to be given up in passing from classical to quantum theory.

Abstract:If quantum gravity violates Lorentz symmetry, the prospects for observational guidance in understanding quantum gravity improve considerably. This article briefly reviews previous work on Lorentz violation (LV) and discusses aspects of the effective field theory framework for parametrizing LV effects. Current observational constraints on LV are then summarized, focusing on effects in QED at order E/M_Planck.

Abstract:Quantum cosmology based on Lorentzian path integrals is a promising avenue. However, many previous works allow non-Lorentzian configurations by integrating the squared scale factor over the whole real line. Here we show that restricting the minisuperspace path integral to Lorentzian configurations with positive squared scale factor can significantly change the expectation values. In addition, this enables the study of causal horizons and their quantum fluctuations, and achieves singularity avoidance trivially by excluding singular minisuperspace geometries as non-Lorentzian. The results indicate that semiclassical saddle point approximation is not always valid in truly Lorentzian quantum cosmology. As a consequence, related works on the tunnelling and no-boundary proposals, bouncing cosmology, and the quantum origin of inflation etc. need to be reexamined.

Towards quantum Mechanics on the curved cotangent bundle

Abstract:The minimal-length paradigm is a cornerstone of quantum gravity phenomenology. Recently, it has been demonstrated that minimal-length quantum mechanics can alternatively be described as an undeformed theory set on a nontrivial momentum space. However, there is no fully consistent formulation of these theories beyond Cartesian coordinates in flat space and, in particular, no position representation. This paper is intended to take the first steps in bridging this gap. We find a natural position representation of the position and momentum operators on general curved cotangent bundles. In an expansion akin to Riemann normal coordinates with curvature in both position and momentum space, we apply the formalism perturbatively to the isotropic harmonic oscillator and the hydrogenic atom. Due to the symmetry of the harmonic oscillator under exchange of positions and momenta, we show that it is impossible to distinguish position- from momentum- space curvature with oscillators alone. Thus, we obtain an instantiation of Born reciprocity on the curved cotangent bundle, i. e. in precisely the way Born originally envisioned. It manifests itself as a symmetry mixing UV and IR physics, reminiscent of T-duality in string theory.

Abstract:After short historical overview we describe the difficulties with application of standard QFT methods in quantum gravity (QG). The incompatibility of QG with the use of classical continuous space-time required conceptually new approach. We present briefly three proposals: loop quantum gravity (LQG), the field-theoretic framework on noncommutative space-time and QG models formulated on discretized (triangularized) space-time. We evaluate these models as realizing expected important properties of QG: background independence, consistent quantum diffeomorphisms, noncommutative or discrete structure of space-time at very short distances, finite/renormalizable QG corrections. We only briefly outline an important issue of embedding QG into larger geometric and dynamical frameworks (e.g. supergravity, (super)strings, p-branes, M-theory), with the aim to achieve full unification of all fundamental interactions.

The Signed Distance Function: A New Tool for Binary Classification

Abstract:From a geometric perspective most nonlinear binary classification algorithms, including state of the art versions of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN) classifiers, and are based on the idea of reconstructing indicator functions. We propose instead to use reconstruction of the signed distance function (SDF) as a basis for binary classification. We discuss properties of the signed distance function that can be exploited in classification algorithms. We develop simple versions of such classifiers and test them on several linear and nonlinear problems. On linear tests accuracy of the new algorithm exceeds that of standard SVM methods, with an average of 50% fewer misclassifications. Performance of the new methods also matches or exceeds that of standard methods on several nonlinear problems including classification of benchmark diagnostic micro-array data sets.

Abstract:We evaluate the Lorentzian gravitational path integral in the presence of nonvanishing torsion with the application of the Picard-Lefschetz theory for minisuperspaces corresponding to a number of phenomenological bouncing cosmological models as well as for the inflationary paradigm. It turns out that the semiclassical wave function derived from the saddle points of the path-integral formalism coincides with the solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. Intriguingly, our analysis showed that the relative probability, derived using these semiclassical wave functions favors universes with smaller values of torsion. Moreover, we find that in the inflationary case, nonzero values of a certain parity-violating component of the torsion enhance the power in the large-physical length scales, which can have important observational implications. On the other hand, in the case of bouncing models, the power spectrum is characterized by an initial region of growth, an intermediate oscillatory region, and then again a final region of growth. The shape of the power spectrum in the initial and intermediate regions is sensitive to the abundance of the bounce-enabling matter and torsion, along with the initial wave function of the universe, while the final size modifies the behavior of the power spectrum in the smaller length scales. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.043525 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:A number of arguments at the interplay of general relativity and quantum theory suggest an operational limit to spatial resolution, conventionally modeled as a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). Recently, it has been demonstrated that the dynamics postulated as a part of these models are only loosely related to the existence of the minimal-length scale. In this paper, we intend to make a more informed choice on the Hamiltonian by demanding, among other properties, that the model be invariant under (possibly) deformed Galilean transformations in one dimension. In this vein, we study a two-particle system with general interaction potential under the condition that the addition of two wave numbers as well as the action of Galilean boosts on wave numbers be nonlinearly deformed so as to comply with the cutoff. We find that the customary GUP Hamiltonian does not allow for invariance under (any kind of) generalized Galilean transformations. Those Hamiltonians which allow for a deformed relativity principle have to be related to the ordinary Galilean ones by virtue of a momentum-space diffeomorphism, i.e., a canonical transformation. Minimal and maximal lengths of quantum gravity from non-hermitian position-dependent noncommutativity

Abstract:A minimum length scale of the order of Planck length is a feature of many models of quantum gravity that seek to unify quantum mechanics and gravitation. Recently, Perivolaropoulos in his seminal work (Perivolaropoulos in Phys. Rev. D 95:103523, 2017) predicted the simultaneous existence of minimal and maximal length measurements of quantum gravity. More recently, we have shown that both measurable lengths can be obtained from position-dependent noncommutativity (Lawson in J. Phys. A Math.Theor. 53:115303, 2020). In this paper, we present an alternative derivation of these lengths from non-Hermitian position-dependent noncommutativity. We show that a simultaneous measurement of both lengths form a family of discrete spaces. In one hand, we show the similarities between the maximal uncertainty measurement and the classical properties of gravity. On the other hand, the connection between the minimal uncertainties and the non-Hermicity quantum mechanic scenarios. The existence of minimal uncertainties are the consequences of non-Hermicities of some operators that are generators of this noncommutativity. With an appropriate Dyson map, we demonstrate by a similarity transformation that the physically meaningfulness of dynamical quantum systems is generated by a hidden Hermitian position-dependent noncommutativity. This transformation preserves the properties of quantum gravity but removes the fuzziness induced by minimal uncertainty measurements at this scale. Finally, we study the eigenvalue problem of a free particle in a square-well potential in these new Hermitian variables.

Abstract:Most approaches towards a quantum theory of gravitation indicate the existence of a minimal length scale of the order of the Planck length. Quantum mechanical models incorporating such an intrinsic length scale call for a deformation of Heisenberg's algebra resulting in a generalized uncertainty principle and constitute what is called gravitational quantum mechanics. Utilizing the position representation of this deformed algebra, we study various models of gravitational quantum mechanics. The free time evolution of a Gaussian wave packet is investigated as well as the spectral properties of a particle bound by an external attractive potential. Here the cases of a box with infinite walls and an attractive potential well of finite depth are considered.
