Abstract:A monoid $M$ is said to be surjunctive if every injective cellular automaton with finite alphabet over $M$ is surjective. We show that monoid algebras of surjunctive monoids are stably finite. In other words, given any field $K$ and any surjunctive monoid $M$, every one-sided invertible square matrix with entries in the monoid algebra $K[M]$ is two-sided invertible. Our proof uses first-order model theory.

Abstract:When G is an arbitrary group and V is a finite-dimensional vector space, it is known that every bijective linear cellular automaton τ:VG→VG is reversible and that the image of every linear cellular automaton τ:VG→VG is closed in VG for the prodiscrete topology. In this paper, we present a new proof of these two results which is based on the Mittag-Leffler lemma for projective sequences of sets. We also show that if G is a non-periodic group and V is an infinite-dimensional vector space, then there exist a linear cellular automaton τ1:VG→VG which is bijective but not reversible and a linear cellular automaton τ2:VG→VG whose image is not closed in VG for the prodiscrete topology.

Abstract:In this paper, we formalize precisely the sense in which the application of a cellular automaton to partial configurations is a natural extension of its local transition function through the categorical notion of Kan extension. In fact, the two possible ways to do such an extension and the ingredients involved in their definition are related through Kan extensions in many ways. These relations provide additional links between computer science and category theory, and also give a new point of view on the famous Curtis–Hedlund theorem of cellular automata from the extended topological point of view provided by category theory. These links also allow to relatively easily generalize concepts pioneered by cellular automata to arbitrary kinds of possibly evolving spaces. No prior knowledge of category theory is assumed for the most part.

Abstract:Reversibility is a well-studied property for deterministic cellular automata but it is only partially explored when randomness appears in the update or in the transitions. Here, we present a detailed study of 21 finite-size elementary cellular automata with a fully asynchronous updating and periodic boundary conditions. We estimate their degree of reversibility by counting the number of recurrent configurations as a function of the size of the automaton (number of cells). We show that these rules exhibit various qualitative behaviours: some rules show a "strong reversibility" with a number of recurrent configurations that grows exponentially, while other rules have a "weak reversibility" with a linear growth. We also analyse the structure of the communication graph and report various scaling relations for the number of recurrent communication classes. We identify the cases where the divisibility of the size by 2 or 3 introduces some discontinuities in the behaviour. This study completes the characterisation of the 256 elementary cellular automata with regard to their recurrence properties.

Decision algorithms for reversibility of one-dimensional non-linear cellular automata under null boundary conditions

Abstract:The property of reversibility is quite meaningful for the classic theoretical computer science model, cellular automata. For the reversibility problem for a CA under null boundary conditions, while linear rules have been studied a lot, the non-linear rules remain unexplored at present. The paper investigates the reversibility problem of general one-dimensional CA on a finite field $\mathbb{Z}_p$, and proposes an approach to optimize the Amoroso's infinite CA surjectivity detection algorithm. This paper proposes algorithms for deciding the reversibility of one-dimensional CA under null boundary conditions. We propose a method to decide the strict reversibility of one-dimensional CA under null boundary conditions. We also provide a bucket chain based algorithm for calculating the reversibility function of one-dimensional CA under null boundary conditions. These decision algorithms work for not only linear rules but also non-linear rules. In addition, it has been confirmed that the reversibility function always has a period, and its periodicity is related to the periodicity of the corresponding bucket chain. Some of our experiment results of reversible CA are presented in the paper, complementing and validating the theoretical aspects, and thereby further supporting the research conclusions of this paper.

Abstract:We establish generalizations of the well-known surjunctivity theorem of Gromov and Weiss as well as the dual-surjunctivity theorem of Capobianco, Kari and Taati for cellular automata (CA) to local perturbations of CA over sofic group universes. We also extend the results to a class of non-uniform cellular automata (NUCA) consisting of global perturbations with uniformly bounded singularity of CA. As an application, we obtain the surjunctivity of algebraic NUCA with uniformly bounded singularity over sofic groups. Moreover, we prove the stable finiteness of twisted group rings over sofic groups to generalize known results on Kaplansky's stable finiteness conjecture for group rings.

Abstract:Reversibility is one of the most significant properties of cellular automata (CA). In this paper, we focus on the reversibility of one-dimensional finite CA under reflective boundary conditions (RBC). We present two algorithms for deciding the reversibility of one-dimensional CA under RBC. Both algorithms work for not only linear rules but also non-linear rules. The first algorithm is to determine what we call the "strict reversibility" of CA. The second algorithm is to compute what we call the "reversibility function" of CA. Reversibility functions are proved to be periodic. Based on the algorithms, we list some experiment results of one-dimensional CA under RBC and analyse some features of this family of CA.

Temporally Non-Uniform Cellular Automata (t-NUCA): Reversibility and Cyclic behavior

Abstract:In this work, we propose a variant of non-uniform cellular automata, named as Temporally Non-Uniform Cellular Automata (t-NUCAs), which temporally use two rules, $f$ and $g$ in a sequence $\mathcal{R}$. To observe reversibility in t-NUCAs, we study their injectivity and surjectivity properties. Unlike classical CAs, some irreversible t-NUCAs show the behavior similar to reversible t-NUCAs. To study this behavior, we define restricted surjectivity of t-NUCA and introduce restricted reversibility which shows reversibility of t-NUCA for a set of initial configurations. By further investigating the remaining irreversible t-NUCAs, some t-NUCAs are found which have many-to-one mapping in their configuration space, but do not have non-reachable (Garden-of-Eden) configurations. We name these t-NUCAs as weakly reversible t-NUCAs. Under finite lattice size, a t-NUCA, like any classical CA, shows cyclic behavior. We explore this cyclic behavior and discuss its relation with rule sequence. Finally, we note down the possible longest cycle length of a t-NUCA, based on the lattice size and rule sequence.

Abstract:We investigate expressiveness, a parameter of one-dimensional cellular automata, in the context of simulated biological systems. The development of elementary cellular automata is interpreted in terms of biological systems, and biologically inspired parameters for biodiversity are applied to the configurations of cellular automata. This article contains a survey of the Elementary Cellular Automata in terms of their expressiveness and an evaluation whether expressiveness is a meaningful term in the context of simulated biology.

Two Graphs: Resolving the Periodic Reversibility of One-dimensional Finite Cellular Automata

Abstract:Finite cellular automata (FCA) are widely used in simulating nonlinear complex systems, and their reversibility is closely related to information loss during the evolution. However, only a relatively small portion of their reversibility problems has been solved. In this paper, we perform calculations on two graphs and discover that the reversibility of any one-dimensional FCA exhibits periodicity as the number of cells increases. We also successfully provide a method to compute the reversibility sequence that encompasses the reversibility of one-dimensional FCA with any number of cells. Additionally, the calculations in this paper are applicable to FCA with various types of boundaries. This means that we will have an efficient method to determine the reversibility of almost all one-dimensional FCA, with a complexity independent of cell number.

Abstract:Complexity has been a recurrent research topic in cellular automata because they represent systems where complex behaviors emerge from simple local interactions. A significant amount of previous research has been conducted proposing instances of complex cellular automata; however, most of the proposed methods are based on a careful search or a meticulous construction of evolution rules. This paper presents the emergence of complex behaviors based on reversible cellular automata. In particular, this paper shows that reversible cellular automata represent an adequate framework to obtain complex behaviors adding only new random states. Experimental results show that complexity can be obtained from reversible cellular automata appending a proportion of about two times more states at random than the original number of states in the reversible automaton. Thus, it is possible to obtain complex cellular automata with dozens of states. Complexity appears to be commonly obtained from reversible cellular automata, and using other operations such as permutations of states or row and column permutations in the evolution rule. The relevance of this paper is to present that reversibility can be a useful structure to implement complex behaviors in cellular automata.

Abstract:Cellular automata (CA) are dynamical systems defined by a finite local rule but they are studied for their global dynamics. They can exhibit a wide range of complex behaviours and a celebrated result is the existence of (intrinsically) universal CA, that is CA able to fully simulate any other CA. In this paper, we show that the asymptotic density of universal cellular automata is 1 in several families of CA defined by local symmetries. We extend results previously established for captive cellular automata in two significant ways. First, our results apply to well-known families of CA (e.g. the family of outer-totalistic CA containing the Game of Life) and, second, we obtain such density results with both increasing number of states and increasing neighbourhood. Moreover, thanks to universality-preserving encodings, we show that the universality problem remains undecidable in some of those families.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the reversibility of multidimensional linear cellular automata with an intermediate boundary condition. We begin by addressing the matrix representation of these automata, and the question of reversibility boils down to the invertibility of this matrix representation. We introduce a decomposition method that factorizes the matrix representation into a Kronecker sum of significantly smaller matrices. The invertibility of the matrix hinges on determining whether zero can be expressed as the sum of eigenvalues of these smaller matrices, which happen to be tridiagonal Toeplitz matrices. Notably, each of these smaller matrices represents a one-dimensional cellular automaton. Leveraging the rich body of research on the eigenvalue problem of Toeplitz matrices, our result provides an efficient algorithm for addressing the reversibility problem. As an application, we show that there is no reversible nontrivial linear cellular automaton over $ \mathbb{Z}_2 $.

On Transition Constructions for Automata -- A Categorical Perspective

Abstract:We investigate the transition monoid construction for deterministic automata in a categorical setting and establish it as an adjunction. We pair this adjunction with two other adjunctions to obtain two endofunctors on deterministic automata, a comonad and a monad, which are closely related, respectively, to the largest set of equations and the smallest set of coequations satisfied by an automaton. Furthermore, we give similar transition algebra constructions for lasso and {\Omega}-automata, and show that they form adjunctions. We present some initial results on sets of equations and coequations for lasso automata.

Abstract:Elementary Cellular Automata (ECA) are a well-studied computational universe that is, despite its simple configurations, capable of impressive computational variety. Harvesting this computation in a useful way has historically shown itself to be difficult, but if combined with reservoir computing (RC), this becomes much more feasible. Furthermore, RC and ECA enable energy-efficient AI, making the combination a promising concept for Edge AI. In this work, we contrast ECA to substrates of Partially-Local CA (PLCA) and Homogeneous Homogeneous Random Boolean Networks (HHRBN). They are, in comparison, the topological heterogeneous counterparts of ECA. This represents a step from ECA towards more biological-plausible substrates. We analyse these substrates by testing on an RC benchmark (5-bit memory), using Temporal Derrida plots to estimate the sensitivity and assess the defect collapse rate. We find that, counterintuitively, disordered topology does not necessarily mean disordered computation. There are countering computational "forces" of topology imperfections leading to a higher collapse rate (order) and yet, if accounted for, an increased sensitivity to the initial condition. These observations together suggest a shrinking critical range.

Space-like dynamics in a reversible cellular automaton

Abstract:In this paper we study the space evolution in the Rule 54 reversible cellular automaton, which is a paradigmatic example of a deterministic interacting lattice gas. We show that the spatial translation of time configurations of the automaton is given in terms of local deterministic maps with the support that is small but bigger than that of the time evolution. The model is thus an example of space-time dual reversible cellular automaton, i.e. its dual is also (in general different) reversible cellular automaton. We provide two equivalent interpretations of the result; the first one relies on the dynamics of quasi-particles and follows from an exhaustive check of all the relevant time configurations, while the second one relies on purely algebraic considerations based on the circuit representation of the dynamics. Additionally, we use the properties of the local space evolution maps to provide an alternative derivation of the matrix product representation of multi-time correlation functions of local observables positioned at the same spatial coordinate.

Abstract:We introduce a finite automata model for performing computations over an arbitrary structure $\mathcal S$ . The automaton processes sequences of elements in $\mathcal S$ . While processing the sequence, the automaton tests atomic relations, performs atomic operations of the structure $\mathcal S$ , and makes state transitions. In this setting, we study several problems such as closure properties, validation problem and emptiness problems. We investigate the dependence of deciding these problems on the underlying structures and the number of registers of our model of automata. Our investigation demonstrates that some of these properties are related to the existential first order fragments of the underlying structures.

Abstract:For linear non-uniform cellular automata (NUCA) which are global perturbations of CA over an arbitrary universe, we introduce and investigate their dual linear NUCA, which are also endomorphisms over a generally infinite dimensional vector space. Generalizing results for linear CA, we show that dynamical properties namely pre-injectivity, resp. injectivity, resp. stably injectivity, resp. invertibility of a linear NUCA is equivalent to surjectivity, resp. post-surjectivity, resp. stably post-surjectivity, resp. invertibility of the dual linear NUCA. However, while bijectivity is a dual property for linear CA, it is no longer the case for linear NUCA. We prove that for linear NUCA, stable injectivity and stable post-surjectivity are precisely characterized respectively by left invertibility and right invertibility and that a linear NUCA is invertible if and only if it is pre-injective and stably post-surjective. Surprisingly, we show that linear NUCA with finite memory satisfy the shadowing property also known as the pseudo-orbit tracing property. Thus, linear NUCA can be useful for fault-tolerant computation. Applications on the dual surjunctivity are also obtained.

Abstract:The dynamical behavior of non-uniform cellular automata is compared with the one of classical cellular automata. Several differences and similarities are pointed out by a series of examples. Decidability of basic properties like surjectivity and injectivity is also established. The final part studies a strong form of equicontinuity property specially suited for non-uniform cellular automata.
