Abstract:We give a new construction of the one-variable Alexander polynomial of an oriented knot or link, and show that it generalizes to a vector valued invariant of oriented tangles.

Abstract:In this paper, in an attempt to extend an earlier work of Luck, we construct a knot invariant with parameter in C* by using the fundamental L-2-representation of the fundamental group of the knot complement, which may be thought of as an L-2-analogue of the usual Alexander polynomial of the knot in S-3. When restricted to U(1) parameters, we interpret this invariant in terms of the U(1) twisted L-2-Reidemeister torsion. We also show that this L-2-invariant depends only on the norm |t| for t is an element of C*. In particular, this implies an unexpected rigidity property of the U(1) twisted L-2-torsion on a knot complement. A possible relationship with the volume conjecture is discussed.

Abstract:We introduce a version of the Alexander polynomial for singular knots and tangles and show how it can be strengthened considerably by introducing a perturbation. For singular long knots, we also prove that our Alexander polynomial agrees with previous definitions.

A diagrammatic computation of abelian link invariants

Abstract:We show how the multivariable signature and Alexander polynomial of a colored link can be computed from a single symmetric matrix naturally defined from a colored link diagram. In the case of a single variable, it coincides with the matrix introduced by Kashaev in [arXiv:1801.04632], which was recently proven to compute the Levine-Tristram signature and the Alexander polynomial of oriented links [arXiv:2311.01923, arXiv:2310.16729]. As a corollary, we obtain a multivariable extension of Kauffman's determinantal model of the Alexander polynomial, recovering a result of Zibrowius [arXiv:1601.04915v1].

Twisted Knots and the Perturbed Alexander Invariant

Abstract:The perturbed Alexander invariant $\rho_1$, defined by Bar-Natan and van der Veen, is a powerful, easily computable polynomial knot invariant with deep connections to the Alexander and colored Jones polynomials. We study the behavior of $\rho_1$ for families of knots $\{K_t\}$ given by performing $t$ full twists on a set of coherently oriented strands in a knot $K_0 \subset S^3$. We prove that as $t \to \infty$ the coefficients of $\rho_1$ grow asymptotically linearly, and we show how to compute this growth rate for any such family. As an application we give the first theorem on the ability of $\rho_1$ to distinguish knots in infinite families, and we conjecture that $\rho_1$ obstructs knot positivity via a "perturbed Conway invariant." Along the way we expand on a model of random walks on knot diagrams defined by Lin, Tian and Wang.

On the n-loop Kontsevich invariant of knots having the same Alexander polynomial

Abstract:The $n$-loop Kontsevich invariant of knots takes its value in the completion of the space of $n$-loop open Jacobi diagrams, which is an infinite dimensional vector space. Since the 1-loop part is presented by the Alexander polynomial, we are interested in the image of the $\geq 2$-loop Kontsevich invariant of knots having the same Alexander polynomial. In this paper, we show that for $n\geq 2$ the subspace generated by the image of the $n$-loop Kontsevich invariant of genus $\leq g$ knots having the same Alexander polynomial is finite dimensional. Further, we give some concrete calculations about those subspaces and dimensions in several simple cases.

Abstract:It follows from earlier work of Silver-Williams and the authors that twisted Alexander polynomials detect the unknot and the Hopf link. We now show that twisted Alexander polynomials also detect the trefoil and the figure-8 knot, that twisted Alexander polynomials detect whether a link is split and that twisted Alexander modules detect trivial links.

Hard Unknots and Collapsing Tangles

Abstract:This paper gives infinitely many examples of unknot diagrams that are hard, in the sense that the diagrams need to be made more complicated by Reidemeister moves before they can be simplified. In order to construct these diagrams, we prove theorems characterizing when the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles is an unknot. The key theorem shows that the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles [P/Q] and [R/S] is unknotted if and only if PS + QR has absolute value equal to 1. The paper uses these results in studying processive DNA recombination, finding minimal size unknot diagrams, generalizing to collapses to knots as well as to unknots, and in finding unknots with arbirarily high complexity. The paper is self-contained, with a review of the theory of rational tangles and a last section on relationships of the theme of the paper with other aspects of topology and number theory. The present version of the paper contains a correction to Figure 22 of the previous (and published) version, a small expansion to the section on Farey fractions, and an updated reference to the paper "Unknotting unknots" by Henrich and Kauffman.

Log-concavity of the Alexander polynomial

Abstract:The central question of knot theory is that of distinguishing links up to isotopy. The first polynomial invariant of links devised to help answer this question was the Alexander polynomial (1928). Almost a century after its introduction, it still presents us with tantalizing questions such as Fox's conjecture (1962) that the absolute values of the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial $\Delta_L(t)$ of an alternating link $L$ are unimodal. Fox's conjecture remains open in general, with special cases settled by Hartley (1979) for two-bridged knots, by Murasugi (1985) for a family of alternating algebraic links, and by Ozsváth and Szabó (2003) for the case of genus $2$ alternating knots, among others. We settle Fox's conjecture for special alternating links. We do so by proving that a certain multivariate generalization of the Alexander polynomial of special alternating links is Lorentzian. As a consequence, we obtain that the absolute values of the coefficients of $\Delta_L(t)$, where $L$ is a special alternating link, form a log-concave sequence with no internal zeros. In particular, they are unimodal.

Abstract:Twisted torus knots are a generalization of torus knots, obtained by introducing additional full twists to adjacent strands of the torus knots. In this article, we present an explicit formula for the Alexander polynomial of twisted torus knots. Our approach utilizes a presentation of the knot group of twisted torus knots combined with Fox's free differential calculus. As applications, we provide a lower bound for the genus of certain families of twisted torus knots and identify families of twisted torus knots that are not $L$-space knots.

An analogue of Turaev comultiplication for knots in non-orientable thickening of a non-orientable surface

Abstract:This paper concerns pseudo-classical knots in the non-orientable manifold $\hat{\Sigma} =\Sigma \times [0,1]$, where $\Sigma$ is a non-orientable surface and a knot $K \subset \hat{\Sigma}$ is called pseudo-classical if $K$ is orientation-preserving path in $\hat{\Sigma}$. For this kind of knot we introduce an invariant $\Delta$ that is an analogue of Turaev comultiplication for knots in a thickened orientable surface. As its classical prototype, $\Delta$ takes value in a polynomial algebra generated by homotopy classes of non-contractible loops on $\Sigma$, however, as a ground ring we use some subring of $\mathbb{C}$ instead of $\mathbb{Z}$. Then we define a few homotopy, homology and polynomial invariants, which are consequences of $\Delta$, including an analogue of the affine index polynomial.

Abstract:We establish a connection between the Alexander polynomial of a knot and its twisted and $L^2$-versions with the triangulations that appear in 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. Specifically, we introduce twisted Neumann--Zagier matrices of ordered ideal triangulations and use them to provide formulas for the Alexander polynomial and its variants, the twisted Alexander polynomial and the $L^2$-Alexander torsion.

Taut foliations from knot diagrams

Abstract:We prove that if a knot $K$ has a particular type of diagram then all non-trivial surgeries on $K$ contain a coorientable taut foliation. Knots admitting such diagrams include many two-bridge knots, many pretzel knots, many Montesinos knots and more generally all arborescent knots defined by weighted planar trees with more than one vertex such that $1)$ all weights have absolute value greater than one, and $2)$ there exists a weight with absolute value greater than two. The ideas involved in the proof can also be adapted to study surgeries on links and as an application we show that for all surgeries $M$ on the Borromean link it holds that $M$ is not an $L$-space if and only if $M$ contains a coorientable taut foliation.

Two complete invariants of oriented knots

Abstract:We construct two complete invariants of oriented classical knots in space. The value of each invariant on any knot is a set, infinite for the first invariant and finite for the second. The finite set is computed algorithmically from any knot diagram in a finite number of steps. The algorithm reveals the knotting number of the knot as well.

Abstract:The mock Alexander polynomial is an extension of the classical Alexander polynomial, defined and studied for (virtual) knots and knotoids by the second and third authors. In this paper we consider the mock Alexander polynomial for generalizations of knotoids. We prove a conjecture on the mock Alexander polynomial for knotoids, which generalizes to uni-linkoids. Afterwards we give constructions for canonical invariants of linkoids derived from the mock Alexander polynomial, using the formalism of generalized knotoids due to Adams et al.

Abstract:The Alexander polynomial (1928) is the first polynomial invariant of links devised to help distinguish links up to isotopy. In recent work of the authors, Fox's conjecture (1962) -- stating that the absolute values of the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial for any alternating link are unimodal -- was settled for special alternating links. The present paper is a study of the special combinatorial and discrete geometric properties that Alexander polynomials of special alternating links possess along with a generalization to all Eulerian graphs, introduced by Murasugi and Stoimenow (2003). We prove that the Murasugi and Stoimenow generalized Alexander polynomials can be expressed in terms of volumes of root polytopes of unimodular matrices, building on the beautiful works of Li and Postnikov (2013) and Tóthmérész (2022). We conjecture a generalization of Fox's conjecture to the Eulerian graph setting. We also bijectively relate two longstanding combinatorial models for the Alexander polynomials of special alternating links: Crowell's state model (1959) and Kauffman's state model (1982, 2006).

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Ahead of Print. As a generalization of the classical knots, knotoids deal with the open ended knot diagram in a surface. In recent years, many polynomial invariants for knotoids appeared, such as the bracket polynomial, the index polynomial and the [math]th polynomial. In this paper, we introduce a new polynomial invariant [math]-polynomial for knotoids and discuss some properties of the [math]-polynomial. Finally, we construct a family of knotoid diagrams which can be distinguished from each other by the [math]-polynomial but cannot be distinguished by the index polynomial and the [math]th polynomial.
