By using the critical point theory, we establish some new sufficient conditions on the existence and multiplicity of homoclinic solutions. Recent results are generalized and significantly improved. Abstract:We presented a comprehensive theory for deriving closed-form expressions and representations of the general solutions for a specific case of systems involving Riccati difference equations of order $ m+1 $, as discussed in the literature. However, our focus was on coefficients dependent on the Jacobsthal sequence. Importantly, this system of difference equations represents a natural extension of the corresponding one-dimensional difference equation, uniquely characterized by its theoretical solvability in a closed form. Our primary objective was to demonstrate a direct linkage between the solutions of this system and Jacobsthal and Lucas-Jacobsthal numbers. The system's capacity for theoretical solvability in a closed form enhances its distinctiveness and potential applications. To accomplish this, we detailed offer theoretical explanations and proofs, establishing the relationship between the solutions and the Jacobsthal sequence. Subsequently, our exploration addressed key aspects of the Jacobsthal system, placing particular emphasis on the local stability of positive solutions. Additionally, we employed mathematical software to validate the theoretical results of this novel system in our research.

Abstract:This article adapts an operational matrix formulation of the collocation method for the one- and two-dimensional nonlinear fractional sub-diffusion equations (FSDEs). In the proposed collocation approach, the double and triple shifted Jacobi polynomials are used as base functions for approximate solutions of the one- and two-dimensional cases. The space and time fractional derivatives given in the underline problems are expressed by means of Jacobi operational matrices. This investigates spectral collocation schemes for both temporal and spatial discretizations. Thereby, the expansion coefficients are then determined by reducing the FSDEs, with their initial and boundary conditions, into systems of nonlinear algebraic equations which are far easier to be solved. Furthermore, the error of the approximate solution is estimated theoretically along with graphical analysis to confirm the exponential convergence rate of the proposed method in both spatial and temporal discretizations. In order to show the high accuracy of our algorithms, we report the numerical results of some numerical examples and compare our numerical results with those reported in the literature.

Abstract:We have named <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">generalized Jacobi</em> matrices to those that are practically tridiagonal, except for the two final entries and the two first entries of its first and its last row respectively. This class of matrices encompasses both standard Jacobi and periodic Jacobi matrices that appear in many contexts in pure and applied mathematics. Therefore, the study of the inverse of these matrices becomes of specific interest. However, explicit formulas for inverses are known only in a few cases, in particular when the coefficients of the diagonal entries are subjected to some restrictions. We will show that the inverse of generalized Jacobi matrices can be raised in terms of the resolution of a boundary value problem associated with a second order linear difference equation. In fact, recent advances in the study of linear difference equations, allow us to compute the solution of this kind of boundary value problems. So, the conditions that ensure the uniqueness of the solution of the boundary value problem leads to the invertibility conditions for the matrix, whereas that solutions for suitable problems provide explicitly the entries of the inverse matrix.

Jacobi Collocation Method for the Approximate Solution of Some Fractional-Order Riccati Differential Equations with Variable Coefficients

Abstract:This paper presents a computational method for the approximate solution of arbitrary-order non-linear fractional Riccati differential equations with variable coefficients. Proposed computational method is a combination of the operational matrix of integration method and the collocation method associated with the Jacobi polynomials. Convergence analysis of the proposed method is provided. Numerical results for different fractional orders of the Riccati differential equations are discussed. Figures and tables are used to show the numerical results derived from the proposed computational method for particular cases of Jacobi polynomials such as the Legendre polynomials, the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, the Chebyshev polynomials of the third kind, the Chebyshev polynomial of the fourth kind, and the Gegenbauer (or ultraspherical) polynomials. Numerical results from the proposed methods are compared from those derived by using the existing analytical and numerical methods. It is observed that the results from the proposed method are more accurate. Maximum absolute error and the root-mean square error tables are given for all five kinds of polynomials for comparison purposes.

Abstract:An adaptive finite difference scheme for variable-order fractional-time subdiffusion equations in the Caputo form is studied. The fractional-time derivative is discretized by the L1 procedure but using nonhomogeneous timesteps. The size of these timesteps is chosen by an adaptive algorithm to keep the local error bounded around a preset value, a value that can be chosen at will. For some types of problems, this adaptive method is much faster than the corresponding usual method with fixed timesteps while keeping the local error of the numerical solution around the preset values. These findings turn out to be similar to those found for constant-order fractional diffusion equations.

Abstract:Judging by the remarkably large number of recent publications on fractional calculus and its applications in several widely diverse areas of mathematical, physical and engineering sciences, the current popularity and importance of the subject of fractional calculus cannot be overemphasized. Motivated by some of these potentially useful developments, many authors have recently demonstrated the usefulness of fractional calculus in the derivation of explicit particular solutions of a number of linear ordinary and partial differential equations of the second and higher orders. The main object of the present paper is to show how several interesting contributions on this subject, involving a certain class of ordinary differential equations associated with (for example) the celebrated Gauss and Jacobi differential equations, can be obtained (in a unified manner) by suitably applying some general theorems on explicit particular solutions of a family of linear ordinary fractional differintegral equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the role of the Jacobi last multiplier in the context of two-dimensional oscillators. We first consider two-dimensional unit-mass oscillators admitting a separable Hamiltonian description, i.e., $H = H_1 + H_2$, where $H_1$ and $H_2$ are the Hamiltonians of two one-dimensional unit-mass oscillators; it is shown that there exists a third functionally-independent first integral $\Theta$, thereby ensuring superintegrablility. Various examples are explicitly worked out. We then consider position-dependent-mass oscillators and the Bateman pair, where the latter consists of a pair of dissipative linear oscillators. Quite remarkably, the Bateman pair is found to be superintegrable, despite admitting a Hamiltonian which cannot be separated into those of two isolated (non-interacting) one-dimensional oscillators.

Abstract:The bivariate difference field provides an algebraic framework for a sequence satisfying a recurrence of order two. Based on this, we focus on sequences satisfying a recurrence of higher order, and consider the multivariate difference field, in which the summation problem could be transformed into solving the first order difference equations. We then show a criterion for deciding whether the difference equation has a rational solution and present an algorithm for computing one rational solution of such a difference equation, if it exists. Moreover we get the rational solution set of such an equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Jacobi spectral collocation method for two-dimensional space-fractional Navier-Stokes equations with Laplacian and fractional Laplacian. We first derive modified fractional differentiation matrices to accommodate the singularity in two dimensions and verify the boundedness of its spectral radius. Next, we construct a fully discrete scheme for the space-fractional Navier-Stokes equations, combined with the first-order implicit-explicit Euler time-stepping scheme at the Jacobi-Gauss-Lobatto collocation points. Through some two-dimensional numerical examples, we present the influence of different parameters in the equations on numerical errors. Various numerical examples verify the effectiveness of our method and suggest the smoothness of the solution for further regularity analysis.

Abstract:We extend Petkovšek's algorithm for computing hypergeometric solutions of scalar difference equations to the case of difference systems $\tau(Y) = M Y$, with $M \in {\rm GL}_n(C(x))$, where $\tau$ is the shift operator. Hypergeometric solutions are solutions of the form $\gamma P$ where $P \in C(x)^n$ and $\gamma$ is a hypergeometric term over $C(x)$, i.e. ${\tau(\gamma)}/{\gamma} \in C(x)$. Our contributions concern efficient computation of a set of candidates for ${\tau(\gamma)}/{\gamma}$ which we write as $\lambda = c\frac{A}{B}$ with monic $A, B \in C[x]$, $c \in C^*$. Factors of the denominators of $M^{-1}$ and $M$ give candidates for $A$ and $B$, while another algorithm is needed for $c$. We use the super-reduction algorithm to compute candidates for $c$, as well as other ingredients to reduce the list of candidates for $A/B$. To further reduce the number of candidates $A/B$, we bound the so-called type of $A/B$ by bounding local types. Our algorithm has been implemented in Maple and experiments show that our implementation can handle systems of high dimension, which is useful for factoring operators.

Abstract:Recently, several problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering have been modeled via distributed-order fractional diffusion equations. In this paper, a new class of time distributed-order and space fractional diffusion equations with variable coefficients on bounded domains and Dirichlet boundary conditions is considered. By performing numerical integration we transform the time distributed-order fractional diffusion equations into multiterm time-space fractional diffusion equations. An implicit difference scheme for the multiterm time-space fractional diffusion equations is proposed along with a discussion about the unconditional stability and convergence. Then, the fast Krylov subspace methods with suitable circulant preconditioners are developed to solve the resultant linear system in light of their Toeplitz-like structures. The aforementioned methods are proved to acquire the capability to reduce the memory storage of the proposed implicit difference scheme from $\mathcal{O}(M^{2})$ to $\mathcal {O}(M)$ and the computational cost from $\mathcal{O}(M^{3})$ to $\mathcal{O}(M\log M)$ during iteration procedures, where M is the number of grid nodes. Finally, numerical experiments are employed to support the theoretical findings and show the efficiency of the proposed methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a Haar wavelet collocation method (HWCM) for solving fractional Riccati equations. The primary goal of this study is to bypass the requirement of calculating the Jacobian of the nonlinear system of algebraic equations by using an iterative quasi-linearization technique. The Haar wavelet series is then utilized to approximate the first-order derivative, which is incorporated into the Caputo derivative framework to express the fractional-order derivative. This process transforms the nonlinear Riccati equation into a linear system of algebraic equations, which does not require calculating the Jacobian and can be efficiently solved using any standard linear solver. We evaluate the performance of HWCM on various forms of fractional Riccati equations, demonstrating its efficiency and accuracy. Compared to existing methods in the literature, our proposed HWCM produces more precise results, making it a valuable tool for solving fractional-order differential equations.

Abstract:Given a set $T \subset (0, +\infty)$, intervals $I\subset (0, +\infty)$ and $J\subset {\mathbb R}$, as well as functions $g_t:I\times J\rightarrow J$ with $t$'s running through the set \[ T^{\ast}:=T \cup \big\{t^{-1}\colon t \in T\big\}\cup\{1\} \] we study the simultaneous $q$-difference equations \[ \varphi(tx)=g_t\left(x,\varphi(x)\right), \qquad t \in T^{\ast}, \] postulated for $x \in I\cap t^{-1}I$; here the unknown function $\varphi$ is assumed to map $I$ into $J$. We prove an Extension theorem stating that if $\varphi$ is continuous [analytic] on a nontrivial subinterval of $I$, then $\varphi$ is continuous [analytic] provided $g_t, t \in T^{\ast}$, are continuous [analytic]. The crucial assumption of the Extension theorem is formulated with the help of the so-called limit ratio $R_T$ which is a uniquely determined number from $[1,+\infty]$, characterising some density property of the set $T^{\ast}$.
