Abstract:This paper presents the latest development at CERN, concentrating on the status of the LHC and the strategy for future linear colliders. The immediate plans include the exploitation of the LHC at its design luminosity and energy as well as upgrades to the LHC (luminosity and energy) and to its injectors. This may be complemented by a linear electron-positron collider, based on the technology being developed by the Compact Linear Collider and by the International Linear Collider and/or by a high-energy electron-proton collider. This contribution describes the various future directions, all of which have a unique value to add to experimental particle physics, and concludes by outlining key messages for the way forward.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses the latest developments at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), especially the current situation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the strategic planning for future linear colliders. Specifically, the paper attempts to address the following aspects: 1. **The LHC's physics program**: - The paper details that one of the main goals of the LHC is to explore the nature of electro - weak symmetry breaking, especially the Higgs mechanism and its associated Higgs boson. In order to make significant progress in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson, a large amount of integrated luminosity (several fb\(^{-1}\)) is required. - The paper also discusses the LHC's research progress in supersymmetry theory (SUSY), new heavy bosons (Z' and W'), and excited quarks, etc. 2. **The LHC's performance and experimental results**: - The paper summarizes the main achievements of the LHC in 2010 and 2011, including the performance of proton - proton collisions and lead - ion collisions. - It emphasizes the huge challenges in data collection, storage, and analysis at the LHC, as well as the verification and transcendence of the Standard Model of particle physics by experimental results. 3. **The LHC's consolidation and upgrade**: - The paper proposes the development strategy of the LHC in the coming years, including the full utilization of the design luminosity, the high - luminosity upgrade (HL - LHC), and the possible higher - energy upgrade (HE - LHC). - It discusses the maintenance and improvement plans during the long - term shutdown from 2013 to 2014, as well as future operation arrangements and technical challenges. 4. **The strategy for future linear colliders**: - The paper introduces the latest progress and technical challenges of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) and the International Linear Collider (ILC). - It explores the possibility of a high - energy electron - proton collider (LHeC), especially its application in QCD and high - density matter research. 5. **The European particle physics strategy**: - The paper emphasizes the development strategy of European particle physics in the context of globalization, including the importance of international cooperation, the stability of financial support, and the continuity of technology development. Through these discussions, the paper aims to provide directions and suggestions for the future development of particle physics, especially for further research and technological progress in the field of high - energy colliders.
