Abstract:Intuitionistic dependence logic was introduced by Abramsky and Vaananen (2009) as a variant of dependence logic under a general construction of Hodges' (trump) team semantics. It was proven that there is a translation from intuitionistic dependence logic sentences into second order logic sentences. In this paper, we prove that the other direction is also true, therefore intuitionistic dependence logic is equivalent to second order logic on the level of sentences.

Abstract:We introduce a new variant of dependence logic called Boolean dependence logic. In Boolean dependence logic dependence atoms are of the type =(x_1,...,x_n,\alpha), where \alpha is a Boolean variable. Intuitively, with Boolean dependence atoms one can express quantification of relations, while standard dependence atoms express quantification over functions. We compare the expressive power of Boolean dependence logic to dependence logic and first-order logic enriched by partially-ordered connectives. We show that the expressive power of Boolean dependence logic and dependence logic coincide. We define natural syntactic fragments of Boolean dependence logic and show that they coincide with the corresponding fragments of first-order logic enriched by partially-ordered connectives with respect to expressive power. We then show that the fragments form a strict hierarchy.

On Quantifiers for Quantitative Reasoning

Abstract:We explore a kind of first-order predicate logic with intended semantics in the reals. Compared to other approaches in the literature, we work predominantly in the multiplicative reals $[0,\infty]$, showing they support three generations of connectives, that we call non-linear, linear additive, and linear multiplicative. Means and harmonic means emerge as natural candidates for bounded existential and universal quantifiers, and in fact we see they behave as expected in relation to the other logical connectives. We explain this fact through the well-known fact that min/max and arithmetic mean/harmonic mean sit at opposite ends of a spectrum, that of p-means. We give syntax and semantics for this quantitative predicate logic, and as example applications, we show how softmax is the quantitative semantics of argmax, and Rényi entropy/Hill numbers are additive/multiplicative semantics of the same formula. Indeed, the additive reals also fit into the story by exploiting the Napierian duality $-\log \dashv 1/\exp$, which highlights a formal distinction between 'additive' and 'multiplicative' quantities. Finally, we describe two attempts at a categorical semantics via enriched hyperdoctrines. We discuss why hyperdoctrines are in fact probably inadequate for this kind of logic.

Abstract:We introduce a universal algebraic generalization of de Jongh's notion of dependence for formulas of intuitionistic propositional logic, relating it to a notion of dependence defined by Marczewski for elements of an algebraic structure. Following ideas of de Jongh and Chagrova, we show how constructive proofs of (weak forms of) uniform interpolation can be used to decide dependence for varieties of abelian l-groups, MV-algebras, semigroups, and modal algebras. We also consider minimal provability results for dependence, obtaining in particular a complete description and decidability of dependence for the variety of lattices.

Abstract:We argue that in some KR applications, we want to quantify over sets of concepts formally represented by symbols in the vocabulary. We show that this quantification should be distinguished from second-order quantification and meta-programming quantification. We also investigate the relationship with concepts in intensional logic. We present an extension of first-order logic to support such abstractions, and show that it allows writing expressions of knowledge that are elaboration tolerant. To avoid nonsensical sentences in this formalism, we refine the concept of well-formed sentences, and propose a method to verify well-formedness with a complexity that is linear with the number of tokens in the formula. We have extended FO(.), a Knowledge Representation language, and IDP-Z3, a reasoning engine for FO(.), accordingly. We show that this extension was essential in accurately modelling various problem domains in an elaboration-tolerant way, i.e., without reification.

Abstract:Generalised quantifiers, which include Henkin's branching quantifiers, have been introduced by Mostowski and Lindström and developed as a substantial topic application of logic, especially model theory, to linguistics with work by Barwise, Cooper, Keenan. In this paper, we mainly study the proof theory of some non-standard quantifiers as second order formulae . Our first example is the usual pair of first order quantifiers (for all / there exists) when individuals are viewed as individual concepts handled by second order deductive rules. Our second example is the study of a second order translation of the simplest branching quantifier: ``A member of each team and a member of each board of directors know each other", for which we propose a second order treatment.

Negation and partial axiomatizations of dependence and independence logic revisited

Abstract:In this paper, we axiomatize the negatable consequences in dependence and independence logic by extending the systems of natural deduction of the logics given in (Kontinen and Vaananen 2013) and (Hannula 2015). We prove a characterization theorem for negatable formulas in independence logic and negatable sentences in dependence logic, and identify an interesting class of formulas that are negatable in independence logic. Dependence and independence atoms, first-order formulas belong to this class. We also demonstrate our extended system of independence logic by giving explicit derivations for Armstrong's Axioms and the Geiger-Paz-Pearl axioms of dependence and independence atoms.

Abstract:Modal dependence logic was introduced recently by Väänänen. It enhances the basic modal language by an operator =(). For propositional variables p_1,...,p_n, =(p_1,...,p_(n-1);p_n) intuitively states that the value of p_n is determined by those of p_1,...,p_(n-1). Sevenster (J. Logic and Computation, 2009) showed that satisfiability for modal dependence logic is complete for nondeterministic exponential time. In this paper we consider fragments of modal dependence logic obtained by restricting the set of allowed propositional connectives. We show that satisfibility for poor man's dependence logic, the language consisting of formulas built from literals and dependence atoms using conjunction, necessity and possibility (i.e., disallowing disjunction), remains NEXPTIME-complete. If we only allow monotone formulas (without negation, but with disjunction), the complexity drops to PSPACE-completeness. We also extend Väänänen's language by allowing classical disjunction besides dependence disjunction and show that the satisfiability problem remains NEXPTIME-complete. If we then disallow both negation and dependence disjunction, satistiability is complete for the second level of the polynomial hierarchy. In this way we completely classify the computational complexity of the satisfiability problem for all restrictions of propositional and dependence operators considered by Väänänen and Sevenster.

On the Strength of Uniqueness Quantification in Primitive Positive Formulas

Abstract:Uniqueness quantification ($\exists !$) is a quantifier in first-order logic where one requires that exactly one element exists satisfying a given property. In this paper we investigate the strength of uniqueness quantification when it is used in place of existential quantification in conjunctive formulas over a given set of relations $\Gamma$, so-called primitive positive definitions (pp-definitions). We fully classify the Boolean sets of relations where uniqueness quantification has the same strength as existential quantification in pp-definitions and give several results valid for arbitrary finite domains. We also consider applications of $\exists !$-quantified pp-definitions in computer science, which can be used to study the computational complexity of problems where the number of solutions is important. Using our classification we give a new and simplified proof of the trichotomy theorem for the unique satisfiability problem, and prove a general result for the unique constraint satisfaction problem.

Abstract:Existential rules form an expressive Datalog-based language to specify ontological knowledge. The presence of existential quantification in rule-heads, however, makes the main reasoning tasks undecidable. To overcome this limitation, in the last two decades, a number of classes of existential rules guaranteeing the decidability of query answering have been proposed. Unfortunately, only some of these classes fully encompass Datalog and, often, this comes at the price of higher computational complexity. Moreover, expressive classes are typically unable to exploit tools developed for classes exhibiting lower expressiveness. To mitigate these shortcomings, this paper introduces a novel general syntactic condition that allows us to define, systematically and in a uniform way, from any decidable class $\mathcal{C}$ of existential rules, a new class called Dyadic-$\mathcal{C}$ enjoying the following properties: $(i)$ it is decidable; $(ii)$ it generalises Datalog; $(iii)$ it generalises $\mathcal{C}$; $(iv)$ it can effectively exploit any reasoner for query answering over $\mathcal{C}$; and $(v)$ its computational complexity does not exceed the highest between the one of $\mathcal{C}$ and the one of Datalog. Abstract:Both propositional dependence logic and inquisitive logic are expressively complete. As a consequence, every formula with intuitionistic disjunction or intuitionistic implication can be translated equivalently into a formula in the language of propositional dependence logic without these two connectives. We show that although such a (non-compositional) translation exists, neither intuitionistic disjunction nor intuitionistic implication is uniformly definable in propositional dependence logic.

Abstract:Hintikka and Sandu originally proposed Independence Friendly Logic (IF) as a first-order logic of imperfect information to describe game-theoretic phenomena underlying the semantics of natural language. The logic allows for expressing independence constraints among quantified variables, in a similar vein to Henkin quantifiers, and has a nice game-theoretic semantics in terms of imperfect information games. However, the IF semantics exhibits some limitations. It treats the players asymmetrically, considering only one of the two players as having imperfect information when evaluating truth, resp., falsity, of a sentence. In addition, the truth and falsity of sentences coincide with the existence of a uniform winning strategy for one of the two players in the semantic imperfect information game. As a consequence, IF does admit undetermined sentences, which are neither true nor false, thus failing the law of excluded middle. In this paper, we investigate an extension of IF, called Alternating Dependence/Independence Friendly Logic (ADIF), tailored to overcome these limitations. To this end, we introduce a novel compositional semantics, generalising the one based on trumps proposed by Hodges for IF. The new semantics (i) allows for meaningfully restricting both players at the same time, (ii) enjoys the property of game-theoretic determinacy, (iii) recovers the law of excluded middle for sentences, and (iv) grants ADIF the full descriptive power of Second Order Logic. We also provide an equivalent Herbrand-Skolem semantics and a game-theoretic semantics for the prenex fragment of ADIF, the latter being defined in terms of a determined infinite-duration game that precisely captures the other two semantics on finite structures.

Abstract:In 1957, the Polish logician Andrej Mostowski pointed out that there are many mathematically interesting quantifiers that are not definable in terms of the first-order ∀, ∃ and initiated study of so-called generalized quantifiers (cf. Mostowski, 1957). Since then logicians have discovered and studied a large number of generalized quantifiers. At last count there were well over 200 research papers in this area. Most of this work has been directed toward cardinality quantifiers (e.g. Keisler, 1969) and topological quantifiers (e.g. Sgro, 1977) which are not particularly relevant to natural language, but even so, it has forced logicians to rethink the traditional theory of quantification.

Abstract:In standard epistemic logic, the names and the existence of agents are usually assumed to be common knowledge implicitly. This is unreasonable for various applications in computer science and philosophy. Inspired by term-modal logic and assignment operators in dynamic logic, we introduce a lightweight modal predicate logic where names can be non-rigid, and the existence of agents can be uncertain. The language can handle various de dicto/de re distinctions in a natural way. We characterize the expressive power of our language, obtain complete axiomatisations of the logics over several classes of varying-domain/constant-domain epistemic models, and show their (un)decidability.
On existential declarations of independence in IF Logic

Abstract:We analyze the behaviour of declarations of independence between existential quantifiers in quantifier prefixes of IF sentences; we give a syntactical criterion for deciding whether a sentence beginning with such prefix exists such that its truth values may be affected by removal of the declaration of independence. We extend the result also to equilibrium semantics values for undetermined IF sentences. The main theorem allows us to describe the behaviour of various particular classes of quantifier prefixes, and to prove as a remarkable corollary that all existential IF sentences are equivalent to first-order sentences. As a further consequence, we prove that the fragment of IF sentences with knowledge memory has only first-order expressive power (up to truth equivalence).

Alternating Quantifiers in Uniform One-Dimensional Fragments with an Excursion into Three-Variable Logic

Abstract:The uniform one-dimensional fragment of first-order logic was introduced a few years ago as a generalization of the two-variable fragment to contexts involving relations of arity greater than two. Quantifiers in this logic are used in blocks, each block consisting only of existential quantifiers or only of universal quantifiers. In this paper we consider the possibility of mixing both types of quantifiers in blocks. We show the finite (exponential) model property and NExpTime-completeness of the satisfiability problem for two restrictions of the resulting formalism: in the first we require that every block of quantifiers is either purely universal or ends with the existential quantifier, in the second we restrict the number of variables to three; in both equality is not allowed. We also extend the second variation to a rich subfragment of the three-variable fragment (without equality) that still has the finite model property and decidable, NExpTime{}-complete satisfiability.
